I found the strangle problem with my new HTC Desire HD: GPS lost satellites in the case of camera in the video recording mode.
First concern arose when using the device as a DVR: VideoReg, DailyRoads Voyager, AutoGuard. In all cases I have gps data loss.
As an experiment I ran the program gpstest and the original camera software - GPS have problems with the satellites when camera is recording video
What could it be ???
Factory firmware with OTA upgrade.
The GPS is only active when an app which uses the GPS is active. So if you switch to an app today does not use GPS, the function is turned off.

I understand it of course
DVR's are using GPS and camera by self, in the tests I used gps application in the background (navitel navigator and GPS status).
Oh I see. I don't know what's wronng. Never used any of the apps you mentionned above.
I am the developer of DailyRoads Voyager. There is quite a large number of users who run Voyager concurrently with navigation apps, without having problems with the GPS fix. But, not on the Desire HD
I have made some extensive changes in the code which handles GPS. Would any of you like to test this new version?
Thanks,
Robert
i would test if you send it to me?
just found it in the market and downloading it.
The version on the Android Market most likely has the same issues described above. The new version for test can be downloaded from here:http://dailyroads.com/voyager/test/4/dailyroads.apk
Please test for at least 2 minutes, because listening for GPS will be restarted after 30 seconds, and then again after 1 minute.
This version also creates a log file (DailyRoadsLog.txt) in the root folder of the
SD card. When you're done with the tests, please send this file to [email protected]
Thanks,
Robert
Did anybody resolve the issue? I have the same problem with my Inspire 4G. When the camera is active the GPS wont't fix. Once the camera is off the fix occurs immediately
hi, same problem (still) here. no programm works when it combines camera/GPS.
just installed DailyRoads Voyager and will try 'n' see if I can do the tests and send the doc. maybe it'll help.
PS contacted HTC a while ago, simple reaction "your GPS is working as wel las your camera. you don't have a problem then...." welll, discussing here is more than limited, even when sying tt both together don't work...
Hi, found via Robert (daily road travel ) found via russian forums the following : add an external b/t gps receiver, download a small app from the market which links the receiver to the phone and done !
Ok, it's a workaround but a working one !
Cheers

Has anyone found a better resolution??
I am having a problem with GPS being active at all times. I think it may be an app but I can't find out which one. Spare Parts is not displaying anything under GPS usage. Is there any other way I can find out which apps are using gps without going through each one?
Thanks in advance.
lbe privacy guard is an app, which can show you what apps use ur gps, contacts....
and you can change the permissions, so that only apps which really need gps can use it.
The xperia play is a UK SIM free version running 2.3.4 - and is being used in Greece with a Greek SIM card (phone bought from the UK as is half the price).
My main interest is in achieving a GPS lock with no data (wi-fi nor mobile data). Although I have a data plan here I avoid using data whilst roaming due the preposterously high charge. I am using Copilot live premium for navigation.
GPS lock is quick, ranging from less than 10 seconds to 20 seconds or so and is accurate.
However, a short time after achieving the lock it loses it. It then regains a lock (taking 20 seconds or so), but after a short time loses this again. This process carries on and on, rendering the GPS useless as turns are missed.
I have installed GPS status - cleared AGPS data - set it to never download AGPS. But this makes no difference. GPS status also loses its lock (and then regains it etc) as Copilot does. I have tried clearing maps cache, weather cache - but to no avail.
Although to be 100% sure I need to test this more, but I have noticed that if I allow a mobile data connection the GPS then works reliably. But that is what I am trying to avoid - the enabling of data.
It also works reliably when I use an external bluetooth GPS receiver, as you would expect. This is the only way I use it now when I know that I will need to rely on it. But obviously it is a bind having to remember to carry the bt receiver with the phone.
I have researched this for hours and have read threads that mention editing the gps.conf file, but again the changes relate to using different servers which means data useage…..
I suspect that the GPS functions correctly, but then some other process –be it Android native or installed by me – starts to interfere with it.
My questions are:
1. Why can I not use the GPS reliably with data disabled – even with a stand alone app like Copilot?
2. Is it even possible to use Android GPS functionality without data? (like I have been for years with symbian Nokia handsets where you disable the network GPS assistance and then simply wait longer for a lock).
Having read through the Copilot forums it is clear that this problem is affecting a large number of users. It seems that the GPS function on Gingerbread 2.3.4 is not working properly with Copilot Live premium. Naturally users are fuming there, but I'm not convinced that the problem is Copilot related.
With my bluetooth GPS receiver the Copilot navigation works perfectly. But the same lock loss/regain/loss problem is exhibited by GPS status when using internal GPS receivers.
After further testing it seems that if I allow mobile data, Copilot then works perfectly using the internal GPS.
It would seem to me that GPS functionality on Gingerbread 2.3.4 (on the Xperia Play at least) has a problem if a mobile data connection is not allowed - which points to there being an issue with the GPS being able to function without AGPS data.
I have tried using GPS status to download AGPS data, but when you activate Copilot there is immediate data transfer - even if you have only just switched it off and then back on again.
I am completely new to Android, therefore would appreciate any information or experiences from other users attempting to use GPS without allowing mobile data.
Hi Guys,
I wanted to know what any of you find to be the best app to find a lost phone. I wanted to know what the best app is to date since things can change over time, and I havent used this type of service for over a year. Some features I'd like are GPS tracking but little to no battery drain, and the ability to sound an alert even when the phone is silent or on vibrate. Thanks for any and all input.
Just me but I use the one that comes with 'Kaprasky Security', it is very accurate in my country of Canada so just try that or wait for other responses

I second this. No monthly or annual fees. Just pay $4 one time and it covers up to 5 devices.
Here's some of the features:
It has three ways to protect your device:
- Remote control through the website www.cerberusapp.com
- Remote control via text messages
- SIM Checker (for devices that have a SIM card): you will automatically receive alerts if someone uses your phone with an unauthorized SIM card
Remote control allows you to perform many operations on your device, like:
- Locate and track it
- Start a loud alarm, even if the device is set to silent mode
- Wipe the internal memory and the SD card
- Hide Cerberus from the app drawer
- Lock the device with a code
- Record audio from the microphone
- Get a list of last calls sent and received
- Get information about network and operator the device is connected to
- And much more!
Cerberus automatically enables GPS if it is off when you try to localize your device (only on Android < 2.3.3) and you can protect it from unauthorized uninstalling - more info in the app configuration.
The app works even if the device does not have an internet connection thanks to remote control by sms messages. Also, the SIM Checker feature allows you to know the new number to send texts to, if the SIM card is changed. Texts received and sent for Cerberus remote control will not start any notification and will not appear in the Messages application.
Cerberus does not drain the battery because there is no background service running: it will activate only if there is a remote control request and will stop afterwards.
More features for rooted devices: complete uninstall protection (a thief will be able to delete Cerberus only by flashing another ROM), GPS auto-enabling even on Android > 2.3.3. More info on the website in the Help section.

I used that to find my wife's phone. Did a remote install too as I didn't have it on the device. .. Amazing.
I've heard a lot about Cerberus, but it needs to always be running on your device from what I can see. Can you remote install and configure it only when you need it? If not, that's a pretty dangerous app to allow basically all functions of your phone to be accessed online...
I use avast! Mobile Security. You can install the application and then enable Anti-Theft. Once it's set-up and installed, you can uninstall avast! Mobile Security. (I'm unable to provide links, but they have a webpage that describes the necessary steps better.)
You can then use a bunch of different commands via text message to locate/lock/unlock/etc. your phone. You can specify two phone numbers to be the only phones that can communicate with your device, or you can leave it open. (Commands sent to your device must contain your pin code and then the command.)
The FAQ for the app says it does not run in the background and is only activated when a text command is sent to the phone. (I think this program only works if you're able to receive text messages to your actual number. Not via Google Voice.)
avast mobile security is awesome!
I use cerberus...they have features such a remote recording of video and audio which I don't think is available on SeekDroid which I was on before

You can buy a ball of yarn at the hardware store for a few cents. Tie one end to the phone, one end to your wrist.
Never lose the phone.
Avast can get location even if GPS, wifi, mobile data and location service are turned off, if you are rooted. Cerberus can't.

Pretty sure if you allow Cerberus administrator privileges, it can turn on GPS/Wifi/Data on by command...
Pretty sure it can't.

Okay... I just tested it now with Cerberus dashboard (online website where you can send commands from) with my phone unlocked right in front of me. Sent command "start tracking" and saw with my own eyes the WIFI and GPS toggles go from OFF to ON. Wifi and GPS still on... Sent command "stop tracking" and WIFI and GPS toggles went from ON to OFF.
---Edit---
Sorry, I was wrong about the administrator privileges, by enabling that, it will allow you to erase your data/sd card remotely. To get WIFI and GPS to turn on when you send the tracking command, you have to push Cerberus to /system/app
I see a flaw in all of this:

Cerberus help page, and I quote:
"I have a rooted device. Can I get additional features?
Yes! If you have rooted your device you can integrate Cerberus into your ROM and get two additional features: complete uninstall protection (Cerberus will even survive a wipe/factory reset) and GPS auto-enabling even on Android 2.3.3 and later. To have these features uninstall Cerberus, then download cerberus.zip, put it on the sd card and install it from recovery. Cerberus is also available on ROM Manager."
Taken from avast! Mobile Security app page, and I quote:
"Self-Protection
Extremely difficult for thieves to remove (especially on rooted phones), Anti-Theft protects itself from uninstall by disguising its components with various self-preservation techniques. On rooted phones it is able to survive hard-resets and can even disable the phone’s USB port."
I really searched the forums and the web and was not able to find a working solution for my Oneplus 3 with Android Nougat (LAOS weeklies)...
My problem: I would like to switch / select the active data SIM on the go. Either by clicking a widget button or (even better) with a tasker condition: if SIM 1 is roaming, select SIM 2 for data.
I found some really old comments and old APKs and Play Store links - but none of them is working.
Is there such an application available that is working under Android 7.x?
Am I the only person with this problem
I am looking for something similar. Basically a toggle to disable data on the active sim and enable data on the other sim, all in one go!
Are we the only ones with that problem??

Looks like it. Doesn't seem to be a priority for anyone. But it should be easy to achieve using tasker
Did you get any results with Tasker already?
