I am on stock(-ish) lollipop, and I'm trying to prevent some data-hungry apps from eating up all mobile data. I'm pretty sure there was an option to prevent application from using mobile data when in background, wasn't it? I can't seem to find it.
Also: it is not possible to wholesale restrict background data without causing the warning icon on notification bar, which disables restriction the moment you touch it, is it?
UPDATE: for some reason I didn't notice that the "restrict background data" was right there under application name. Sorry.

Hey all,
I'm about to leave the country, and to avoid massive data charges I want to limit my data use as much as possible. In the "Accounts & sync settings" menu there is an option to disable Background Data, but when I do so I get a text box which warns that "Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".
So my question is, which applications will still use data in the background? Do I need to go through them all and disable non-wifi data use? Or is it just a specific type of app which will use data in the background?
By the way, not sure if this is significant, but I'm running froyo, using the modaco rom. (So applications can auto update, but I assume disabling background data will at least stop this.)
Thanks!
Background data (to my understanding) is Syncing i.e. gmail, facebook, twitter etc
The best way would be to disable this option and then hold the power button and select "Mobile Network" at the bottom. That completely disables the the mobile data connection.

Just looking for some information & help here guys. I might seem like a really basic & simple question but I'm a newbie to Android. Got my Galaxy Nexus (which is my 1st Android) after having moved over from the iPhone.
Anyway, I have noticed that some apps I have installed auto start as soon as I stop them. My mate advised me to install the Android Booster app which closes apps, but a few minutes later some of them just auto restart like Facebook & Sky News. They also auto restart if I stop them through apps on the settings menu.
Is there a way of stopping these apps from running when I'm not using them to save on battery and data usage?
Thanks
Apps that restart automatically have a background service running and will keep restarting. They might need that service for background updates or other tasks.
Uninstall the booster app and any other task manager you might have installed and let Android manage the resources. Apps running in the background normally have no measurable impact on battery life. You should never have to worry about that. Only really crappy apps (or wrong user settings like update every 2min) make problems and you should uninstall them anyway and not try to "fix" what they do wrong.
If you are worried about them eating your data, use the new data usage feature in the settings and restrict background data for the apps individually.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah it was more the data usage than battery I am worried about. I hav now gone into setting and restricted background data. How do I restrict individual apps?
You can't do Facebook yet as its not working with ics yet and can't access the menu. Most other apps have a setting option about auto updating.
So basically, I want my phone to be bare as possible. So I removed everything in /vender/app, /oem/app, and /oem/priv-app except for 1 folder in the priv-app folder which was "wifi calling". The only reason I left that there was because if I didn't, I couldn't get passed the Google setup you have to go through after resetting your phone.
Is it possible that I can skip the Google setup somehow and go straight to the home screen?
Also, I'd like to remove all Google apps and use the pico one from open gapps, but some of the Google apps I remove give me pop up errors and my screen is black but I can still see the notification bar up top. Is there a way to "completely" remove all things Google? Kind of like in a GSI.
Last thing, for some reason I've been getting an "R" next to my mobile data icon in the notification bar and it says domestic roaming. Would that be caused by anything in the folders above that I mentioned (oem, vendor)? Or is my mobile completely unrelated to those folders?

I have uber cab application on my phone. I have restricted the background application working and disabled the mobile data access in background and this app is still sending notification on my phone. How is this possible? What are these settings for if they are not restricting the apps? It means app is still working in background.

Optimize doesn't mean it will stop bringing notifications in background or doesn't mean it wont work at all in background. The interval for checking the notifications maybe reduced.
Use greenify if you want to completely stop background activities.
If i have restricted the background data access, hows the app sending me notification without internet?
Whenever i do this to other apps like Instagram, i dont receive any notification from that app. Its just uber

The thing with Instagram is weird, background data access has nothing to do with notifications. Notifications are sent from the app server (in this case Uber's) to Google servers and Google in turn send them to you. If you want to stop receiving notifications you can disable them, but not as background data access, what you can do is long press the notification and then press "Turn off notifications" and then you can choose to turn off the channels that you don't want. That should do it.
I dont wanna sound rude but thats not what i asked. How can uber send the data to Google in the background if it doesn't have access to Internet?

The thing is, Uber doesn't send it from your phone to Google, it sends it from their server which is most likely on the cloud (AWS, Google Cloud or any other) directly to Google, so you can disable background data all you want, but that won't stop them from sending you notifications until you disable the notification itself.
When you said that you "have restricted the background application working and disabled the mobile data access in background" the only thing you did is stopping the app from doing any work when it is not open but only ON YOUR PHONE, the Uber server and services are still running and they will keep sending notifications to all their clients.
When you restrict an app what the system does is to permit activity for that app only when in use or at system wakeups (app standby)
But if you use that app frequently, then the system tags it at different levels (active, frequent, no frequent...). Regarding the tag, more or less often it will sync during programmed system intervals.

Uber could be using firebase clouding, wich is a server-client service to send notifications to clients (app installed).
If you do not want NOTHING then you will have to disable the app and only enable when you are going to use it.
After deleting several applications, the "NFC Services" service always stays in the background (even without NFC being active)
I have tried to clear data, cache, debloat the application and restore it and nothing seems to work.
Even with activity manager, it forces the background app to close by restricting it and it stays open.
Start the phone in error proof mode and it kept starting, maybe the process got stuck.
I also deleted the data from google play and google services in case it was something related to gpay but it didn't work
The NFC works correctly, but that's it, it stays in the background and it doesn't happen to others.
I have asked friends who did not debloat and in forums with the same phone and it does not happen to them.
Maybe remove some application that controls that? either maybe some application from the debloat list is making a call to the NFC API and that causes it to not close?
you can look at settings, applications, manage applications and in Search you put NFC (maybe it won't come out and you have to enable see hidden applications)
