Has anyone tried using a hardware game controller to the Asus Zenfone 2? Either via pairing with bluetooth or USB OTG.
What are your experiences? Do you have recommendations?
I plan to use it mainly on PPSSPP (damn, The 3rd Birthday is hard to play using touch controls) and maybe some Android action games, but PPSSPP is the main reason.
From what I've read, I can use the OEM PS3 controller using USB OTG, but that seems to require root, correct? But I would prefer the non-root solution, as I have no plan to root, not yet at least.
I'm using a SteelSeries bluetooth controller with emulators now and I've used an otg adaptor with an xbox 360 controller. Both worked just as well as any other fairly modern phone once you get the keybindings set up properly. Neither required root for me to use.

That's exactly it. If you have "fat fingers" or large hands, it may be too small to use comfortably, but it works well and has a good amount of controls.

I just went for the sure-fire PS3 Controller + USB OTG. After I saw video reviews of these bluetooth controllers, I just knew they weren't for me.
I was about to give up on this until I read that root is only required for using bluetooth with the PS3 controller, USB OTG does not. I've tried it out and the controller works without a problem in PPSSPP as well as GTA3 for android.
I also read about those gamepad clips that could clip my phone on to the PS3 controller, I'll get one of those in the future.

Ordered from Lazada already for 550php (710php including shipping). It has a 1 month shipping duration but that's better than buying a GameKlip for 1800php (ad I saw in Juantamabayan), which is a certified ripoff as the price is 2x the original selling price of a GameKlip.
In the gadget shops I've visited, they only sell the PS4 controller clips. I've tried them and they do not work with a PS3 controller, because of that goddamn touchpad in the PS4 controller.
I've seen workarounds and DIY clips online, but it just isn't worth the time and effort, let alone the potential damage a DIY rig might cause to my phone or PS3 controller.

Anyway, I have one pre ordered from Lazada. I'll just wait for it. But man, that's really low priced. Seems like Cyberzone does not carry accessories for "old" things anymore, tsk.
I saw on one of the Facebook group for Asus Zenfone 2 Philippines, one of them is using iPega controller but according to some reviews on YouTube some function doesn't really work well but now I'm looking for a MOGA Controller to test, sadly there's not a single Moga controller I can find here in my location.

Good luck on finding that controller. :good:
If all else fails, a Sony PS3 controller + USB OTG works like a charm. Its almost as if the controller is an OEM accessory to the ZF2.

I did as well but then I saw how the product is made. It is just plastic that goes over a physical keyboard. Since the DX does not have that I would not count on getting one.
Wii controller works perfectly fine. If you need the extra buttons you can plug the super controller into the wii stick.
Its nice because you dont have to block any of your screen while playing.
Edit: Could you imagine something covering your screen that give you the ability to use all the SNES or PSX buttons. That would not be enjoyable.
I wish we could get a PS3 controller working with it. That way you have all the possible buttons, without having a device plugged into another.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not to mention the fact that most people who are into roms, etc are more likely to have a ps3 than a wii
It would be nice for some one to develop an add on that snaps to the bottom of the DX and plugs into the micro usb port. Its nice to have a hold of the device instead of trying to prop it up some how.
BUT having a ps3 controlling the device streaming HDMI to my tv would be SICK.

A little off topic, but I really don't see how you'd be more likely to have a PS3, I am into playing old Nintendo games, I can run them all on my Wii. I have a PSOne and PS2 but no PS3 and could care less about emulation on that system.
Dont suppose you nice folks could give us the make/models of any Bluetooth gamepads that you have got working or have found to not work on honeycomb 3.1. I only know the datel one but I'm looking for a more ergonomic PC pad

Yes that's the one. I remember seeing it at Radioshack or Gamestop. Try eBay and see I'm pretty sure there are more. I'm willing to bet eBay has a couple from China.
I found this on eBay. It's a bluetooth DualShock controller. I don't know if it's a knockoff but it could be despite having the PlayStation Logo in the middle.

It will not work. PS3 controllers require being synced up via USB. On the xoom, it would require that and an app. There is no sync button on PS3 controllers.

For bluetooth, it would require an app or script to change the mac address of the bluetooth in your xoom to that of the ps3 controller.
I think you could do that on a PC as a workaround...
i dont understand? i know sometimes you want more buttons or a different grip design, but the wii controller works great for all the 8bit/16bit games i play. at least it gets you going with a BT controller.
http://android.ccpcreations.com/wiicontroller/wc-compatibility
But the Wii controller isn't good to hold for oldschool games (without motion).
There's only two buttons on the wiimote. Wanna play psone games on fpse so need 4 mappable buttons!

Your best option is the Datel Retro Wireless controller.
Hey,
I'm looking for a Bluetooth/Wireless controller to play and emulate games on my 10.1v.
What's the best solution for now ? PS3, Wii, other ?
I want to be able to play without a wire and with a tool that is frequently updated (for better support). If it's not the right time (maybe some controllers have been announced), I'll wait as well...
Thanks !
I hear good things about phonejoy (http://www.phonejoy.net/product-description.html), however I haven't taken the plunge yet. Seems kind of expensive (after shipping) just for a bluetooth controller.
I did install the xbox usb module a while back and plugged in my xbox controller and that worked pretty good. My only gripe is having to plug in the usb adapter and the huge cord. So I am in the same boat as you. Still looking for the perfect bluetooth controller.
I've got XBOX controller but as you say...the wire is killing it for me. That plus that we have to buy that crappy USB adapator. Don't even know how does the Tab still stand when that port is connected.
What about the wii controller ? Any feedback ?
I use a PS3 wireless controller, works pretty well. You will have to "enable" the driver manually to connect the controller then you can launch your favorite emulator. You can find the driver from mkt place, but you also need to install the software on your PC to re-write the bluetooth mac address. all the buttons, joystick, directional pads, can be assigned to whatever key u want...
google "motioninjoy" for more info on the driver (sorry system wont let me post outside links...)
Thanks.
How would you describe it in terms of responsiveness/ease of use/app support ?
After some more digging, I think this solution works best :
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/09/sixaxis-controller-android-app-makes-firing-off-hadoukens-easy-a/
There are a couple of vids on youtube demonstrating it, but it will basically take a dualshock bluetooth playstation controller ($20) and work wirelessly.
I haven't tested it out since I don't own the controller. I was about to buy one, when I realized that I spend most of my time playing tower or racing games designed for the tablet, which would not make use of a gamepad.
Thanks a lot. I'd be interested to know where you can get a $20 one too...
I've been using Sixaxis for a while now. It works great with no noticeable lag. I mostly use it for all the emulators. Fortunately I already had a PS3 so I didn't have to buy a new controller.

Ps3, since it has an app, and also, because I don't know moga lol. I use ps3 controller and works perfect
Moga for someone who doesn't want to root. PS3 for one that doesn't mind rooting. I chose PS3 just because I have 3 at home already.
PS3 is much better all around.

It requires root is the only downfall. But if you're on XDA, that should be an issue.

Agree and disagree. I hate the PS3 triggers and the short nubs for handles. The Moga Pro fits better in my hand. The PS3 controller does have a nicer heft to it though.
Not to mention the Moga Pro has the built in clip for your phone, that's pretty sweet. Also the joystick nubs fit your thumbs a lot better (IMO)

Yea but this thread is specifically comparing 2. The MOGA and PS3 are probably the most supported.
I don't have a Pro so I can't compare directly but rather listing qualities of the PS3 more then directly comparing to the MOGA Pro. I do have the original portable MOGA. I like the MOGA but I use my PS3 more.
I think the PS3 is also cheaper.

Never used Moga but I use a PS3 controller with 4 of my devices. I love it, really awesome! I also use GameKlip to mount my phones on to my PS3 controllers. Works out great! Much easier just standing my tablets in a folio case for game play instead mounting them on to my controller. I wouldn't want the extra weight from a tablet in my hand while playing games. I'm not a little guy either, but that's a lot of unneeded weight in your hands in my opinion...

AFAIK there isn't a Mac app to change the bluetooth address of your PS3 controller, is that correct? So you need to find a PC or dual boot or VM or something to setup, right? Also, for me at least, the PS3 controller isn't working on the HTC One yet (unless something has changed in the last couple of weeks).

Ah thanks yeah. I should have said there's no app with a GUI to pair it (since not everyone is comfortable with Terminal). Thanks for the heads up.
If you use the Sixaxis app, can't you just pair it initially using a USB cable, skipping the step requiring a PC?
I know the Ouya does this. Just hardwire it, reset, and pair wirelessly.
I thought the Sixaxis App can do this too.

Id love for you elaborate your experience between the two.
Ive had the PS3 controllers for my ps3 but never used it on my android phone, and just got the Moga now. My deciding factors were,
Moga +
Better android support out of the box(almost all Gameloft support natively and many many games getting updated)
xbox 360 style and button layout, dual analog sticks positions are better
built in clip for mostly any size phones i.e. 3" - 6" devices, and yes note 2 does fit
long lasting battery and charge via any micro usb plug, unlike ps3 which need charging from ps3 or ac only
Dual connection mode(native or hid)
I would have over looked the issues on the ps3 controller but the moga was purpose built for android and with the built in clip and native game support was a no brainer. However I do feel at times the response is like 1/10 off so kind of annoying. But admittedly, i noticed the games that support native like gameloft modern warfare or crazy taxi, etc are near perfect. So who know this thing is just a few software updates from being even better.
It's been my experience with the PS3 controller that custom mapping all of the controls to get the game to work properly can be tedious. Although, with that said....it's also nice to be able to customize it however you want vs what is natively supported. Does MOGA allow this? I'm assuming not. Maybe someone can chime in.
Resolved.

I use the PS3 controller with the GameKlip and it works well for some games. While I am able to map the buttons and create custom profiles, I do notice the difference in the way the buttons work between a controller that is natively supported by the game as opposed to a touch profile created for the game to work with the PS3 controller. This could be just a settings issue, but for me the difference is very noticable. The one thing I love about the PS3 controller is the ability to use it with GameKlip. This setup is just awesome. I have the gameklip for S3 and Nexus 7 and gaming is the best experience with it.
Since you have the Moga controller too, do you know if there are any gameklip like solutions for Moga to mount the Nexus 7 on top of it? I think the default max width supported by the controller is less than the width of the Nexus 7. If there was a solution, i'd buy a Moga controller immediately. the amount of games they support is just great.

The Amazon Controller will probably work better than most other controllers. However, there are quite a few that work fine. I use a Gamestop Red Samurai (bluetooth) and it works great. It was $7 when I bought it from Gamestop. Don't know if they went up on the price since I bought mine. I think there is also a thread that talks about best controllers for the Fire TV also.

I don't know how the new Amazon Game Controller is, but I got the first-gen edition and the D-Pad is stiff as a rock. If you plan on playing any fighting games, I wouldn't recommend getting the older controller. Otherwise, it works great if you only play games that use the analog sticks.
