How did you upgrade your firmware to 2.10 if you are s-on???
You need the 2.10 firmware to run the 2.10 roms.
All you can do when s-on is wait for the 2.10 ota to arrive.
Or pay for sunshine-app to get s-off.

That won't work. As said in the other thread you need a stock, unrooted and read-only TWRP backup of the 1.40.709.8 system. As K00li79 already said the rom of a 2.10.709.1 backup isn't compatible with your firmware. After you restored the needed 1.40.709.8 backup you only need to replace TWRP with the stock recovery and then you will be able to install the update. The only other option (that has actually been stated several times now, too) would be paying for Sunshine and after getting S-OFF flashing a RUU like this one.

So you were able to receive and install an official OTA with a 2.10.709.1 rom although your firmware was 1.40.709.8? Or are you still on 1.40.709.8? Flashing a backup with TWRP alone won't update your firmware.
Edit: If your firmware is still 1.40.709.8 I may be able to help you out with a stock backup in a few hours. Since you haven't been the only person with problems during the process of getting back to stock and installing official OTAs I created some stock backups (1.40.709.8 and 1.40.206.8) last night. The files are uploading right now. But it's no problem if you don't need it anymore. Maybe there is someony else on the world wide web who might need it.
Edit2: And here is the post with the download link and some instructions.

A twrp restore won't touch your firmware. You're still on the same firmware you've always been on.

What you'll usually see is reboots when you hit the power button to turn on the screen. But I don't know if it's universal.

Collection of stock backus Go there download the nandroid backup for your device(1.54.709.12) and the stock recovery also on post 1.
Restore the nandroid backup for your device with the custom recovery(It was made with TWRP so use TWRP) flash back the stock recovery and just follow all the OTA updates to get to the latest 4.4.4 and you'll also be ready for 5.0 when it launches(whenever).

I am sure firewater should work on your device. I just S-OFF and gained superCID. Your device is basically a GSM phone. The only advantage of doing OTA updates are that you will be getting updates a tad faster. The disadvantage is it might brick your phone with wrong firmware/device ID. My advice would be to try to get S-OFF again. If your phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked go ahead and flash a custom recovery such as TWRP. If you do no know how to flash your recovery you can download an app called Flashify and it will flash TWRP for you via google play store app.
Once you get TWRP recovery you can reboot into recovery and simply do a system restart. It will ask if you want to install superSU. Make sure you have superSU installed. follow the instructions from here http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/ I recommend being on a stock sense ROM. Make sure you have debugging enabled via developer option and enabling unknown devices. Once you push firewater to your phone and allow superSU app to grant permission you SHOULD get s-OFF.
Once you get s-OFF you can change your phone version ID to superCID via bootloader+adb command "fastboot oem writecid 1111111" After that you can just flash over any firmware you want. I say wait for devs to get official gpe 5.0 dumps and it'll be way better than an OTA rom.
IF your phone ever gets into a bootloop or frozen reboot it via holding down volume up+down+power. The phone will reboot.

Wouldn't integrity of the files in the system and data partitions be a problem?!
Cause when you unlock some apps which are in data partition get deleted.
and when the rom is rooted and im guessing the nandroid backup is rooted...
the system partition is changed.

Are you talking about system changes preventing OTA updates? If so, being rooted has nothing to do with it, it won't prevent an OTA from installing. It'll remove root from the device in which case you'll have to re-root(if you want) but it won't prevent the OTA from installing.
Besides as far as I know, unless stated differently, the backups in the thread are all unrooted.

Guess you should have made a backup of your device before you messed around. That way you would have known for a fact it was "untouched" .
Just download the backup provided in the link, flash a stock recovery and do the OTA's. You can even go through the small effort ahead of time and "unroot" it just in case it was "rooted" which I doubt it will be.

Root alone does not change system partition. Its only changes to system files you do after root that will prevent OTA.
And in theory, the stock backups in Mr Hofs collection should be made without root, I believe. Root is not needed to make a nandroid.
As far as I have seen, the couple HTC apps that are "deleted" upon bootloader unlock do not affect OTA. There are lots of folks here with unlocked bootloaders that were able to return to stock ROM and recovery and OTA.

One for a know fact as its stated in the download link. And it's very usable for official ota as its 100% complete. And if it bothers people it's rooted they have to read the second post too as it contains a flashable zip to delete root access. But that's not being said here because people probably don't read enough very well !
And indeed root is not needed for a nandroid backup. Only a custom recovery is enough to create one.
ooof that made me sound interesting !
Cheers.

Ahh ... you're asking about my backup that I uploaded.
No ... nothing is deleted from backup 1.54.709.12, everything is there like the flashlight, calculator & etc. No root, no busybox... simply clean stock.
In fact, once you restore the backup with full wipe of your current ROM, you'll get the setup wizard just like when you setup the phone for the first time.
Hi,
I have been reading a lot of posts to find the stock recovery version for my HTC One M8. My CID is T-MOB003 and I have the stock ROM (Software nr. x.xx.114.x)still running but I can't find my stock recovery - must have misplaced it after the back-up - so I can do the update to Android 5.0. I have already looked here for it but no solution.
Is there anyone who can help me with a stock recovery for my device?
Greetings,

when you get prompted for the ota you download it but NOT install it. take the ota.zip from the internal memory and take out the firmware.zip, in that zip is the recovery.img.
flash that recovery.img and then perform the ota.....done :good:

Damn that was the help I needed!! Really great gonna try this when I get home!
After searching for months myself, I came to the conclusion that nobody has ever made a backup of their original recovery. (the T-MOB003 that is)
Since I had the same problem, and I know it sounds like bull**** but you need to get s-off to get firmware updates since you do not have the original recovery anymore.
The only way of fixing this that I know is theroot.ninja (SunShine S-Off Tool)
Yes it does costs some money, but you'll be happy with it for years.
It changes your CID to 111111 so you can flash whatever firmware you want and then you should be good to go!

No need at all for all of that. The method described above to get the stock recovery works flawlessly, if of course the system is 100% stock too !
And as additional info :
My experience on the one x was that all recoveries starting with the same base number are the same

Recovery is not a problem .. simply extract out from OTA zip before proceed with OTA installation.
Nandroid backup is a problem especially the lower version 1.57.114.2 for hboot 3.16.00000 and 2.23.114.3 for hboot 3.18.0000 - many users are stuck at these two versions because no one willing to share them.

Hello guys, does anyone have a 3.29.166.9 twrp backup? Or a m8 with cid-vodap110 so he or she can make a fresh nandroid backup so i can go back to stock. I tried x.x.161.x backups but they don't work with cid-vodap110. Vodap110 is specific cid for Swisscom ch. Thanks in advance
No one has it?
Why don't you contact the other guy that already updated to 4.xx.166.x
Ask him for system part only. Then you can use it to update by flashing firmware first.
(I have the firmware but no backup)
Are you running a rooted/modified stock ROM now ? If yes, you can backup that and upload for me.. I will try to fix the error.
If you're running a custom ROM, you can flash the updated firmware and then install a lollipop custom ROM ... this can be done too.

You don't run 4.16.401.10 stock firmware but you run a stock 4.16.410.10 ROM.
You can flash your stock firmware 4.19.166.2 then run 4.16.401.10 .. at least you can have a lollipop firmware running a lollipop software.

Need to totally factory start my HTC ONE M8
Hi guys, i really hope you can help me here.
I have a HTC ONE M8. It is a UK version on EE carrier. the CID is ORANG001. in fast boot it is blank next to OS- (don't know if tyhat matters at this point) I have S-Off through SUNSHINE. I have no oringinal back up. I have tried flashing the recovery found in my OTA updtate and several others that say they should work in various other threads, all through ADB Fastboot says it sends and writes ok but has no effect.
I have unrooted, factory booted, and am at the end of my tether. EE will not replace the handset if it is tampered and i really dont want to have to pay for a totally new one.
Okay, so, I got my One M8 yesterday and decided to flash a GPE ROM with S-On. Everything was working except for the Wi-Fi, which is just greyed out. I've tried using an RUU, but it won't detect my phone for some reason.
My hboot is 3.16 and radio is 1.16, don't know if that has something to do with it. At this point I'd just like to return to stock, doesn't matter how.
Please keep in mind that I'm very new to this and don't know a lot of the technical terms. Thanks in advance.
Yeah hboot is way to low !

And have a good read. Hope you made a stock rom backup of your own before messing around ?

Thanks for the help! I'm just wondering if it matters which TWRP backup I use, because there are a couple to choose from the HTC_622 CID.

Thank you so much! My M8 is working perfectly fine! Say, if I want to install a custom ROM again, how can I avoid messing up?
fastboot flash stock 1.60.708.2 recovery image.
Check Software update and accept multiple OTA
1.60.708.2 --> 2.11.708.2 --> 3.32.708.4 --> 4.18.708.12
reflash custom recovery and install any Sense based custom ROM that you like

I did exactly what you said and now I'm on 4.18.708.12, but WiFi isn't working. It was working in 4.4.4 and every update before it, don't know what happened. It just shows WiFi and below "Error" or it gets stuck in "Turning on..." for a while. Can you help me with this? I haven't seen this issue pop up anywhere else.
EDIT: I gave up and did a factory reset and it seems to be working perfectly now. Maybe I had bad luck.
hey guys
i have back to stock 4.16 with Twrp backup and i installed stock recovery for 4.16 now iam s-on unlocked bootloader , i got message to update to 6.12 , is it ok to install it ? or does it work with no problem?
Best Regards.
Needs to be stock, never rooted TWRP backup (unrooting doesn't work).
If its says "software official" (I think that is what it says, something to that effect) on the bootloader screen, it should be okay.
If it says "software modified", than OTA will likely not install.

RUU should work (doesn't matter if phone is rooted or custom recovery) as long as OP relocks the bootloader. Although its not clear if OP wants to keep their data (which restoring to stock and OTA should be able to do) which is what some folks want. RUU will wipe the phone.
