New to custom roms looking for gaming rom suggestions - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an Xperia R800i that Im no longer using as a cell phone and would like to turn it into basically a handheld game player, something really geared tword running games well. I have no experience with installing or using roms other than official android updated ones from the manufacturer so any advice on one would be helpful. What I would like ideally is something I could set once and forget. I aim to just install a ton of emulators, maybe a few psp games, listen to music or maybe watch video files/movies. Phone service, Web surfing, apps whatever else I can take or leave.
Ive been looking around and saw this one Xperia NXT Gaming http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173130
That sounds ok to me since I dont care about cellular service or messaging on this anymore, in fact this unit I think has a broken cellular antenna as it likes to keep losing service (is why I have another phone now) But if someone knows of something you think is better Id love to hear it.
Thanks in advance

[Q] Basic Rom

Love this site, have tried almost every rom out there. Here is what I would like. Basic froyo, dont need sense but also dont mind it. wifi tether, mms with pics both ways, good internet, pdf, office, camera with video capabilities, sync with ms outlook, google maps and nav. Basically a smartphone rom. I dont do music on my phone as I get that in the car and home, I dont do much video as I have a wdtv player and membership to a good site. I need smartphone stuff, not media stuff. I dont know if it is possible to strip a rom down and then let people install what they want, im not that smart, lol. I got this phone to replace my last 2 htc windows phones in which I also got alot of roms here. I dont know if it can be done, i here so many people complaining about their youtube or pandora not working, well I am a business man and could care less about that stuff. I want basic SMART ROM. Can it be done?
I'm a bit confused about what you want. It sounds as if you just want a stock ROM. Which means you should either get the Leaked OTA, or Virtuous.
You did mention stripped down though, so I would point you towards Feather or Stripped Froyo.
Are you SURE you've tried every ROM?
I do want stripped down. apps can be installed later if you need them. Just lookign for the basic of the basic. Do need a camera, like pic mms to work, could not get anywhere with the 2 you mentioned. dont need sense, although it is nice since I come from htc windows phones. I guess I dont need all the crap. facebook, youtube, pandora, etc........ most can be accessed from the internet anyways. I want fast internet, good smartphone stuff. If I had the time and the wife wouldnt shoot me for just playin with the phone, I would love to try it, but, alas, I have to work to much. I am in insurance and use my phoen for internet, tethering, email, camera, pdf, and basic stuff. This phone is great, I think if it had a basic rom, with the options to put other apps on, it could smoke even faster. dont know if that helps ya or not. but thanks for the reply man, preshe8it
fyi, i have found redemption roms to be the fastest with the best battery life for the way I use the phone, alot of internet, email, tethering. not alot of music or videos. It is the closest to a smartphone rom that I think there is. If he removed alot of the extra apps, that thing would smoke.
Yeah your wanting to try the feather rom. Everything has been taking out. And if you want to add anything, its right there for the mods. Its up to you what you want to add back. It has the bare essentials for the rom to run. You want barebones I point you in this direction. Hopes it helps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809541

Wishlist / can this be fixed without days/weeks of research or will I have to switch?

Okay, so I made the jump from iPhone 4S to SGS3 T-999 at the beginning of September this year and my experience has been less than fun. Disregarding all the hardware issues, as far as software is concerned, I've been spending hours every day trying to find software that works reliably. Here's my rant of the biggest problems right now, if you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing back! I was looking forward to digging into mods/hacks, etc on Android later down the road but with these basic functions that I depend on daily in my phone not there yet, I'm starting to wonder if I need to just switch back to iOS until Android is more developed. I actually used be on Android in the days of the S2 for about 2 months, but had to ultimately switch back to iOS because I simply didn't always have the time to download 20-30 clock apps to find one that works decently or test out mods and hacks for basic functions. Sure, it's fun to test try out mods and such but when your phone feels like it's broken, that's no good.
>Stock camera app doesn't allow taking pictures/video/flash at a certain level of battery. wtf, why samsung?! I have yet to find a camera app that does video/photo as well as the stock camera app.
>Image compression & resize tool for when e-mailing photos/images quickly...like in iOS would be great, or even something that actually works would be better. Note to Samsung--most people don't want or need to get an e-mail of your 8mp picture taken on your cell phone.
>Audiobook player that saves my spot
>Least buggy PDF reader with search, annotations and highlighting
>Tethering that works (no luck so far with fox fi and a few others, I'm using T-mobile MyMonthly 4G)
>File transfer over USB on my Mac (Latest version of lion, macbook pro 2.4ghz c2d pre-unibody)
>Find my iPhone equivalent with a web interface as opposed to just text message operation
>iOS clock app equivalent. I have downloaded probably more than 2 dozen timer/clock/alarm apps and none of them do it all while staying on in the background and not randomly closing. Also would be great if I didn't lose my timer if the app or phone has to be restarted/killed.
>Make a complete backup on my Mac instead of backing it up to my SD card and then having to copy that to my computer.
This list used be a lot longer...but with much sweat I have found some solutions or learned to cope, but not for everything that is vital^...

I don't understand what "basic" functions you are having issues with? Other than the camera not working after a certain %, it's not like a PDF reader with annotations and highlighting is a "basic" function.. nor are rely any of the other things on your list except maybe image compression.
That being said, I don't know a camera solution for Touchwiz but on AOSP there are no restrictions to when you can take a picture with regards to battery.
Repligo Reader is a great PDF reader. I don't know about search but I can highlight and annotate.
You need to download the app Android File Transfer to transfer via USB on your Mac.
If you're in Monthly4G, tethering is not included. This is an issue with your plan. If you want to tether, root your phone.
There are plenty of "find my android" apps out there, that work exceptionally well. I use Avast!.
AOSP also has a timer and stopwatch built in, so maybe you should try that.
You cannot backup your phone directly to your computer.
I am more than happy to help you, as I am sure most people here are, but I think you need to lower your expectations on "basic" features..

Don't be so sure. I spent an hour trying to get that to work when I first got my phone, gave up and used Airdroid but for the big stuff I have to use my PC.

Yeah, I spent several hours trying to trouble shoot this and just decided it would be easier to use vmware and try to dig up a copy of windows xp i had lying around...ugh..
joshnichols189: Thank you for your help!
By basic, I guess I wasn't necessarily referring to all stock functions...but on the iPhone I found many apps on the App store that accomplished this task competently. Primarily I used Good reader, but there were others so it seemed like something that wouldn't be difficult to come across. I have found a few apps that provide such a function but end up missing others or are too buggy to use. I will have to check which apps specifically I tried with no success if that will help...will look into Repligo Reader, thanks!
As for tethering: I was able to get it to work on an S2 (i9100) running gingerbread using my MyMonthly4G plan using the native tethering feature. I've rooted my phone sucessfully but haven't gotten around looking into custom roms and such..still using stock (but rooted). If you or anyone here knows any especially good tethering solutions for rooted t-999 users running stock it'd be super helpful to hear.
I will have to do research on AOSP.

Be sure to try Repligo, I believe they have a free/lite version! I wasn't able to tether when I was on Monthly4G so maybe it is different now. If you are rooted you should look at the WiFi Tether for Root app. I believe you can find it easily with a Google search. Also be sure to look into AOSP, you might like it more but if not you can always revert!

Just download wifi tether from play store and that will definitely tether anything you want.

The camera would need to be modded. Someone will likely do this at some point.
Theres a full office suite on sale for .25 that may take care of your pdfs and then some. OfficeSuite pro.
For file transfers, you can use SGS3 Easy UMS. It only works for external sdcard though. Many people have been trying to do the same for internal but no luck yet as far as I know. Search for it on xda.
Also on file transfering, have you looked at a wireless transfer solution? I use SwiFTP and love it. Gives me access to the entire file system on my phone, including /system.
There are quite a few find my phone types like youre looking for that get good reviews. Check cerebrus. Haven't used it on this phone but liked it in the past.
My favorite alarm clock app is Alarm Clock Plus. Been using it for a few years now. No stopwatch or timer but hoping the dev adds em in the future.
For the backup, are you talking about a nandroid type backup or apps and data? Nandroid, no backing up straight to computer. Im pretty sure there are apps thatll backup your data and apps like that though. Never used any though. (And theres always adb!)
Tip: when people see a thread with this many questions and youre not experiencing a critical problem, it can look a bit overwhelming and seems like you may be demanding answers without really looking for them yourself. (Not saying thats your case and not trying to be an ass). Additionally at first read/glance it looks like it could be a lot of work to help you for what many might consider to be simple problems. In the future dont wait so long and ask everything at once. Ask your questions as they come and you cant find the answers yourself.
I saw your thread when it was first posted but didnt reply because I knew it would take much longer than I could spend at that moment.
One last thing, if people perceive you to be threatening to leave for the iphone if you dont get what you want, you are much less likely to find help now or in the future.
Like I said, im not trying to be an ass or belittle or anything like that. Just telling you what some (many?) people may think when they just glance over your thread.
Sorry for the little rant, but I am trying to help you.
Btw, if you're having such bad hw issues you may have a defective device. Majority of people have no problems.
Good luck!

Irritating issue

I have read with great plasure about the rooting and installation of custom roms on the One X. As a previous user of the HD2, the modding community kept that device alive for months and gave me the experience of installing and using custom roms.
As such, as soon as I'd had enough of the gaudy sense screen and couldn't be bothered to simply slap another launcher on the phone i rooted it with glee and am now running any one of 3 roms (greatly mood dependent)
I have run into 1 significant issue, and i'm sure its a relatively quick fix, however my post count is precluding me from posting in the relevant thread, so rather than being a moron and simply spamming my way to 10 posts, I thought I would ask in the help forum. Never know, someone may have superior searching skills (My 2 hours searching have yielded disappointing results) and be able to give me the information to correct the issue...
When using Navigation and listening to music via Bluetooth which I do on a regular basis while in the car, normally, on all but 1 ROM (My favourite out of the 3 I use) the music cuts for a second, the voice tells me what direction to drive in, and then the music cuts back in again. The ROM in question in the Eragon Rom. Blade Elite and Sentinel all work fine and dandy, but the one I like most, due to its brilliant battery life and good looks, does the one thing that means I cannot use it. I have a feeling its due to the way in which the music player works, it doesn't show up in the task-bar area when its playing.
Is there someway to change the default program for playing music via Bluetooth? Is there a way to fix this issue that anyone can think of, and no I don't want to just use another ROM, I'm a very stubborn person and like what I like...
Thanks in advance for any replies, I am aware of my noobiness and simply wish to learn...

install another music player, we are not allowed to tell you which one as this is not allowed on the forums which is probably why you could not find the info you require( comparisons are not fair to other devs ). best just to try a few and decide which one suits your purpose the best.

[Q] r800x/CDMA rom compatibility?

Hi all!
I picked up a Verizon Xperia Play r800x at a thrift store yesterday for $33. Needless to say, I was excited for the find!
I've been looking at the various roms available, and amd getting mixed messages on what is compatible with the r800x... A lot of the information I am finding seems to be outdated.
So, simply put, what compatibility issues should I be concerned about when looking for roms? I'm trying to find a debloated, gaming centric rom, but the ones I have been looking at do not specify GSM/CDMA compatibility. If anyone has a rom recommendation for the device, or can tell me what to look for, I would be very appreciative!
Just as an aside, I do not ever plan on using the phone as a "phone," since I'm on T-Mobile and, well, ya know. I do want Wifi to be working, obviously, but the cellular functionality is totally superfluous to me, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

If you don't care about cellular service then you can use any ROM. I recommend you get gin2 jellybean or Aurora play, or xperia next 2 , or dixperia 3, or Bos. They are all great roms but you should also unlock your boatloader and flash a custom kernel like lupus v12 so you can over clock it'll make gaming a lot smoother

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I'm probably going to be using dixperia 3, that one looks super nice!

So the real question is if you intend on using as a phone or not. If you do, I personally recommend unlocking, rooting, and staying with stock (debloat it with Titanium Backup or the like.)
You'll find that the original Verizon rom is ridiculously stable (very plain vanilla), has around 212 or more of free ram, and everything "just works" how it's supposed to.
Use Holo Launcher and Holo Locker if you want the JB look.

The OP said that they didn't intend on actually using it as a phone, as they are on the T-Mobile network (and thus couldn't use it as a phone anyway).
Also, the 2.3.4 Verizon version broke the Google sync, which causes a host of issues (Google Talk doesn't work, stuff done on the Google Play store website won't be noticed by the phone until Google Play is launched on the phone itself, notifications from some apps will not work).

I swear I didn't see that part :cyclops:. And you're right: 2.3.3 is definately the place to stay if staying stock.
That's unfair!
I'm bought one secondhand in 2015 for $41. Sh•t.

Need Help Flashing

I have an old Xperia Play that's been lying around for a bunch of years now and looked back at my pile of phones including an Xperia Z1, Xperia Z3 and this Play and it dawned on me the uselessness of these working machines, especially seen as the Play has a fully functional gamepad. So my aim is to flash the most recent version of Android that still has drivers for the pad and to give it a tasty ROM on top. Trouble is, I'm seemingly inept. I've scoured the internet looking for instructions but I'm just not following. I have no prior understanding of the subject other than how to turn on USB debugging, the rest I've literally never seen or heard before so if some kind, patient soul could give me a step by step, it wouldn't exactly save the world but it'd make me warm and happy inside that I could play GTA on my upgraded Xperia play. the phone is barebones as it was in the shop atm, so Android 2.3.4 (I think), and I saw an XMB style ROM and would like to use that if that helps with the process of explaining. Thanks in advance.
