Boot loop when battery hits 10% - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed whenever my battery gets down to around/at 10% the phone will reset and won't stop until I pull the battery. Anyone else have this issue?
I'm on the newest/current verizon update, it seemed to do this prior to the update as well. Maybe it's a lollipop issue?

I had this happen to me one night, scared the crap out of me, having me think my phone was becoming unstable. I shortly thereafter bought a new battery, same capacity as OEM but different brand. So far so good, hasn't happened to me since. It's too early to tell if this battery is any better than the stock, but I've gotten it down to ~5% before charging it, and no crashing into a bootloop.
I don't know how the calibration for the OEM battery got so far off, or if that was even the problem. It was the original battery since I got my phone last December.

That is strange. I have let my battery drain down so much that the phone shut down and would not turn back on. After charging for a few minutes the phone turned right on. But never had it boot loop from a low battery.

I actually have two oem batteries. Phone just bootlooped again at 10%, had to pull the battery and swapped it on the external charger. I'll drain this current battery to 10% tomorrow and see if it does the same thing.

Yeah, I don't understand why it would try to reboot if there's a power issue. I just stared in awe as it kept blacking out at the VZ logo and booting up again for a few minutes straight...then I took the battery out and reseated it. I didn't power it back on until it was on a charger for a minute or two, though. It's only happened that one time a few weeks ago.

I wonder if it's a software bug in one of the recent updates, but then again, I'd imagine that a lot more people would be having this issue if that were the case.

So I just drained my battery down past 5% with no bootloop. I'm thinking it may be my spare oem battery, I'll try swapping it back again tomorrow and drain it down to make sure it's a battery issue.
Update: down to 6% on the spare battery and no bootloops. So not a battery issue.

Weird.. My phone just started doing this.. Don't know If I just have never gotten to below 10% before or if it just started doing this. But yea, phone hit 10% battery life and immediately started boot looping. OEM battery, running the latest VZW pushed update

Try reseating the battery. I went the whole nine yards and bought a new battery, and am beginning to wonder if that wasn't necessary, after what Subiegsr above reported. I might put the OEM battery back in to see if it does it again, but I'm thinking it just needed taken out and put back in after the update to "recalibrate."

Yea I did a battery pull and that didn't resolve the issue

I'm thinking this is more of a software glitch. I did do the battery reseating after this happens too, only way to fix it is put in a charged oem battery.

does the same thing here, I just made a thread on it. my battery never used to do this. thing is, I'm on kitkat still.. so I've never taken any updates. but yeah my battery drops from like 15 to 10 to 5 then dies within like a couple minutes usually. right now I let it sit overnight so i can attempt a calibration today, and I'm at 9 percent and it hasn't died yet. it will soon though.

Old post, but I have the same issue, Note 4 on 6.01 with all the latest updates. It will go into a boot loop after 20%. Sometimes it does sometimes it does not. Now the weird thing is my Galaxy S6 randomly had the same issue, it completely went berserk and would not get out of the boot loop no matter what boot menu options I did or clear cache etc. I have read others with a lot of the same issues with older and newer Samsung phones. No idea what Samsung or the Carriers are doing with these updates but a simple battery replacement to fix an issue on the Note 4 will do the trick, or get the CPU Awake app. But on a GS6 you are done.

I had this issue and had to replace my battery. Doing this fixed it for me.

Battery Life Bug - Heads Up

Initially, I was very surprised and pleased by the battery life of this phone. I charged it on Saturday, and my usage since then took it down to about 73% this morning. 32 hours of use and 27% battery drain? I'll take that!
But something weird happened today. About midway through the day, the battery just started to crater. Worse yet, charging didn't do anything! The charging indicator animated, but battery life was still falling precipitously. I used it constantly on the train this morning, so I get why it was at 58% by the time I got to work, but then from 8am to about 2pm, it went down to 30%. Then from 2pm to 3pm while it was "charging", it went down to 18%.
Of course I googled the hell out of this, and came across this thread
And rebooting the phone magically stopped the battery drain, and allowed it to start charging again. So I guess our SGSII's are just like the international ones in that regard. Apparently some ROMs have fixed this, but we're still a little new to benefit from that approach. So, just a heads up: if your battery chart just starts falling into the floor, reboot and all will be well.
Note: this also explains the "Android OS" entry showing up at the top of your battery charts. I was shocked when 2 hours of display only accounted for 22% of my battery usage, while Android OS was 68%. Apparently the suspend mode goes insane sometimes and the process of attempting and failing to sleep the phone sucks the battery dry. I'd say that's pretty ironic, myself.
This happened to me also. I was not even touching my phone while working today and it beeped saying 50% I'm like wtf? So I let it sit still working and it beeped saying it needs to be charged. Crazy but I sure do hope this helps and is fixed soon.

happened 2 me couple times, i thought some app was keeping my phone from going to sleep. so i tried spare parts, spare parts doesnt work on stock gingerbread roms on samsung... so i cudnt figure out wat was going wrong... because lets say my battery was at 80%, after i reboot, it would be at 55%, just with a reboot...
i figured something was going wrong in the background, and the battery stats are not reported correctly, your REAL battery percentage shows right when you reboot...
-------------------
after i rooted the phone, THIS FREAKING EXACT PROBLEM made me do a factory reset on my phone, which put my phone in a boot loop... after waiting 16+ hours for a stock kernal to come out, i had to brick my device on purpose (so sprint could not even turn it on), and dey gave me a new SGSII... if i didn't brick it, they would have known it was rooted, due to the international splash screen...

No. I haven't installed anything since yesterday, when it was (supposedly) sipping the battery. It just started going nuts this afternoon. That's why I started looking and found that bug thread for the international SGSII. Apparently there was also a bug in 2.3.3 that would cause some widgets to suck the battery dry within hours, while idle and even in airplane mode. So I guess they're moving in the right direction.
I had a weird issue just now. Battery was at 26 percent. Did a reboot by holding the power button down for 8 seconds or whatever it is. When it booted back up about 30 seconds later i had 10 percent battery.

Today is my first day giving this phone a while, and I've been awestruck by the battery life.
Screen on for a large chunk of the past 12 hours that I've owned it, and I'm still showing about 50 percent. I imagine a battery anticipating 4G usage but me having it turned off all the time gives the phone a real edge, lifewise.
Not looking forward to it cratering like you guys have seen.
HOW CAN YOU GET THIS LIFE AND I CANT?????
I hard reset and started over for everything
Should I take it to sprint store?
like it was some what pointed out alot may be due to the charger....i kept my epic 4g charger and have been using that

I kept my htc evo one, after hearing about screen sensitivity issues and now this.
I got 23 hours with some heavy use on the first charge. It should only get better with the new kernels.

so this is 4 out of 4 samsung devices that do this. both galaxy tablets - 7 and 10.1, droid charge and now this. none of my other android tablets or phones do this. the battery just drops with nothing being used. at -2ma usage it goes from 60% to 20% in seconds or from a reboot.

That may be the case, but I know from my Droid Eris, that bugs just happen. It had the infamous "Time without a signal" bug that used like half the battery life per charge. It basically had to be ROMed to work right. And that bug was there for over a year.
It's just sad the phone makers are being so sloppy. It makes Android seem like a POS, when it's really their fault.

Thanks guys for this thread, My first day I went out and had the phone and installed everything and got root and did titanium backup from my EVO 3D, and played some third blade, and got great battery life, but then yesturday went to work and it just tanked 5 hours and down 50% i was shocked, going to pull the battery if that happens to correct that.
This really disappoints me to see the 'Android OS' bug hasn't been fixed by Samsung despite the issue being reported this Spring when the international SGS2 launched. If I remember correctly it's due to the phone not going into 'deep sleep' after it's been unplugged from the charger. Android OS will be listed in the battery stats as the top consumer of battery.. the workaround is to reboot the phone after pulling it off of the charger in the morning.
I hope Samsung stays true to its word and provides steady firmware updates for their recent devices.. NOT to introduce new features but to fix some of these glaring issues (this one first and foremost)

I'll have to try that. I know rebooting after the system goes nuts stops the drain, but I didn't realize it wasn't sleeping after being charged. I'll report back.
I experience weird battery draining periods throughout the day as well. I think I'll just try to clear my battery stats later.

[Q] battery dies too soon

I have an epic that was working fine. I got a new phone so it sat with the battery dead for a little over a month. Now I gave the epic to my daughter and the battery is all wonky. It will charge up to 100%, but when I take it off the charger it will last anywhere from 20 minutes to 4 hours, which I got the other day with no use and airplane mode on. Now here's the wonky part. It only goes down to around 88% and than goes dead. If I plug it back in it says it has about 80% charge. But if I don't plug it in and just try to turn it back on it acts like it doesn't have enough juice. Now on this phone I'm on cwm 6.8.x or something like that and you can't wipe battery stats so I didn't try that. So I guess my next step would be to flash another recovery and wipe battery stats. I did just flash the peoples ROM 2.2 (I think was the number) just yesterday and wiped everything else for a clean install. Has anyone heard of or experienced this? How can I fix this? Will wiping battery stats work? Also, the battery was great, I could easily get all day out of it with average use just a month ago. Please and thank you.
Nothing?
This community is very small now since this device is old. You need to have patience regarding replies to threads.
Sounds like you need to replace the battery. Look on Amazon and eBay.
I haven't heard of this happening before, nor has it happened to me. Even though some would advise against it, i'd 'calibrate' the battery just to see if that would fix it. If that doesn't fix it, I have no idea.

From what I recall there was a lot of different opinions about the battery wipe in CWM.
If you google it there should be a video that shows you how to use it. I think you drain the battery until phone shuts off then charge it full, unplug it wait 10 minutes, charge it full, then turn it on and wipe battery stats. Then run phone dead again and charge again. Don't really want to charge it until after running it dead.
I used it a couple of times and it seemed to help but people say it has no affect because the battery stats are in the rom or something like that.
I also have heard that after you load a new rom you have to give it some time and the battery will get better.
I have never experienced what you are so sorry I can't help.
I would guess most would say its the battery buy a new one cause it sounds like the battery is only charging 20%.
I still have my stock battery after almost 2 years. It will get me through the day if I just make phone calls and text, but I have to keep a charger handy if I'm going to use the phone for other things. Sometimes my battery will drop if I reboot. It will be at like 30% and when I reboot it will come on with 15% and tell me to charge it.
They say the 1800ma model will work in this phone and I would check into that if buying a new battery.
Well good luck!
The battery was working fine two months ago. That's why its weird to me. Wiping the stats didn't help. I guess a new battery is in order. Grrrrrrrr

If it was the original battery it already has some miles on it and if it sat for a month or two dead in the phone then it's most likely toast. You will get best results with li-ion batteries during the first 300 to 500 charges, so after a year or two the battery will naturally loose it's ability to hold a charge, that's just the nature of the beast. A new battery will do wonders!
The percentage that is displayed is usually directly correlated with battery voltage. So 3.200 V would represent 100% and I think it is 2.6 is 0%. So what sounds like is happening is the battery has a bad cell and jumps from say 3V or whatever is 80% right to some voltage below 2.6. A new battery "should" fix this.

check that 4g isn't on or google talk isn't on. Google now is a big battery waster too. For unexplicable drains, check for a defective battery and if all else fails a clean wipe/install. I've had just about all of these issues on the 4 epic's we own.

[Q] Excessive battery drain while completely powered off

I'm having a very interesting issue with my HTC One. When I power the phone completely off (ie: Hold power button, click power off), the battery still drains when left alone for a few hours. I'd except maybe a percentage or two drained when the phone first boots back up, but its kinda unacceptable that in ~12 hours the battery goes down 15+%!!
Last night, at 8:00PM EST, I turned off my One with a bit over 80% battery remaining. I even rebooted into recovery this time and hit power off to ensure that the phone wasn't doing some crazy deep-sleep hibernation junk. This morning, at 9:00AM I turned the phone back on and had 63% battery! About a 20% drain for 13 hours of completely powered-off sitting on a desk? I've attached a screenshot to further describe the issue. I'm at a loss for this one. With my usage, the phone honestly drains the same amount of power with the phone off than if I just left it on!
To add more confusion: When I first got the phone (Monday after the launch), I didn't have this problem. I'd turn the phone off with 100% once it was charged and 12 hours later turn it back on to 100%. A week or two into using the phone, I started seeing this. I thought it was something weird with Stock, and Googling suggested that the HTC One had some deep-sleep hibernation mode to make boots faster, but after installing CM10.2 I have the same issue. Even with powering the phone off from recovery!
Any ideas? Anyone else noticing this? Is my One defective? (I hope I don't need to send it back.......)

You have to go into settings>power and uncheck fast boot. With this check it kinda puts the phone into hibernation mode and it never totally turns off.
My solution above is for a Sense based ROM not sure what may be causing this running a CM based ROM. Kernel maybe????

I did this while still on Stock; didn't change anything. Note that I'm now on CM10.2 where Fast Boot isn't a thing. Also, powering off from recovery should negate any hibernation, which I tried last night and still saw a 20% drain in 12 hours!

That's what I'm thinking, although what is weird is that usually batteries are either defective on day 1, or degrade over time. It's weird that in the course of a week or two I went from a seemingly perfect battery (maintained charge while powered off) to a terrible battery.
To make matters weirder: I'd expect more than terrible battery life while the phone is on, although I'm not seeing anything excessively bad. This is going to be a nightmare trying to explain to VZ, especially because I can't just tell them I've diagnosed with CM10.2 and a custom recovery. What sucks the most is I'm (more than likely) going to get a "certified like-new" phone back... ugh...

Yeah, I feel your pain GOOD LUCK:fingers-crossed:

Phone was 25% battery, But 50% battery after reboot?

Hey guys, I've had my phone for 4 or so months now and I always charge it while my phone is off and never had any charging/battery issues until today, I decided to charge my phone while it's on and it charged up to 25% and I restarted my phone without removing it from the charger and after it booted back it it's showing 50%, I restarted a few times, tried a cold boot, it's still 50%.
Is this a known issue with this phone? does anyone know what's causing this? I've never had this happen before.
EDIT: After this happened I ran my battery to 0% so I can attempt a battery calibration and when I poped it on the charger it showed my battery was actually 0% and showed a yellow hazard triangle thing (normally it only drops to 1% and there has never been a yellow triangle before)
Sometimes the Android system can incorrectly report a battery charged. I have had it happen to me on my Nexus by about 10%, but have not had it happen to me on my G3. I would not worry about it too much if it only happened to you once. If in continues you to jump around in battery percentage, then I would suggest getting a replacement battery. Keep in mind to try not to leave it charging for very long after reaching 100%, from my experience it can effect a battery's ability to hold a charge if that is done repeatedly. Which means do not leave it charging overnight while you are sleeping. Also I would not suggest running it until 0%, I would imagine a sudden shut down of the Android Operating system is not a healthy thing for it either. Just like it is not good to go up to a computer and just pull the power cord.

Thanks for the input.
I never leave my phone on the charger while I sleep since it only drops 1% while I sleep. My phone actually only goes on the charger like 3 times a month
I know it's not good to fully drain the battery very much, I was just draining it to attempt a battery calibration in the os. And when I do this my phone usually only drops to 1% then dies, but all of a sudden it dropped to 0% this time and showed a big yellow triangle with a big exclamation mark in it
Anyways I reflashed my rom in hopes I can flush the problem out. In 4 months of owning this phone I've never seen this warning before.
This is almost exactly what happened with my old phone (Samsung Captivate Glide). If this continues to happen, it is one of the first signs of the battery failing. But if this is a one time thing, I wouldn't worry about it.
In my case, the battery was going bad. It started going from any % battery, down to 0 instantly, forcing a shutdown. After rebooting, It would show a decent charge (~60% most of the time), but would do the same thing within 5 minutes. At first it only acted up like this once a month, but it became more and more frequent that it happened every day, after using the phone for only 15 minutes. The only fix is to get a replacement battery.

Annoying Battery Issue

My Note 4 is 14mo old and for the last couple months it just shuts off on me even though I have plenty of power left.
I am a light user and usually have enough power for all day use. I rarely use my phone down past 10-15%. I always put my phone on the charger when I go to bed at night when I have somewhere around 20% charge left. If I notice that I might not have enough power to get me through the day I'll put it on the charger somewhere between 30 and 40%.
Lately, like tonight I got a low battery warning at 30% power while I was on the phone. Not even two minutes later it shuts off. When I turn it back on it starts to boot up but then shuts off again. When I put it on the charger it was completely dead. This only happens 3 or 4 times a month but it's annoying because often it happens at the most inconvenient time.
I've also had it shut off and then when I put it on the charger it starts charging at 28% power.
Please let me know what may be going on here and a solution...
Thanks...

I had the exact same issue. I had 2 different batteries shutting off at 20-30%!.... Replacing the battery to a brand new one simply fixed it!.... if you are going to order one online try to avoid unknown brands . Also, pay attention there are some fake Samsung batteries claiming to be authentic.
Also if you still have warranty, contact Samsung and they should send you a new one. That's what i also did.
So you think its the battery and not software related? I was thinking software issue because I don't abuse my battery by running it dead and it's an intermittent problem.
I know that the life cycle of Li-ion is greatly reduced by repeated draining to below 10% (my kid's phones suffer from that. Seems like they can't make a battery last more than 6mo) but I've never had a phone battery go bad on any of MY phones including my old Note 2 even after two years. Maybe I just have a bad battery?

Doesn't matter whether you abuse the battery or not. Some batteries just go bad faster than others. I also think it's your battery.
A factory reset without restoring apps will rule out a software issue though, but since we can't root, it likely isn't anything messing with your battery percent unless it's just an app draining your battery. But even if it were the latter, your battery wouldn't die then start charging at 28%.

Pretty sure this is an actual built in feature. Mines always died at ~20% (since the 5.1.1 update) and once plugged into a charger and rebooted all my running apps and clipboard info is still running as if the phone never died.
My battery is brand new (from warranty replacement) and it still does this so this is why I think it's a "feature" to keep you from losing data in the event of a low battery event. Just my opinion.
It's not a feature. Mine goes all the way to 0% before it dies. I once read to take out the battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds (while the battery is out), then put it back in and see if it helps. This supposedly gets rid of any residual power storage. I don't know if this is a placebo affect by after I did that, my battery now goes all the way to 0 before dieing.

Not exactly a placebo, but not sure if it truly helps. Doing this would clear all electricity stored in any capacitors in the phone. I'm just not sure how this helps.
And my battery goes all the way down to 0% too. It's not normal for the phone to due at any other % (except maybe 1%).
