"if you're rooted with a custom recovery you can flash any ROM" - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any truth to this? I'm paraphrasing from a post a read about an hour ago. For context, he was talking about being able to flash basically any ROM regardless of software version after you successfully get TWRP working.
I was wondering because i have a vs985 24B which makes it pretty hard to find relevant information for even the mainstream ROMs like skydragon and cloudyg3. I found a way to root and get TWRP but if possible I'd like to avoid experimenting with ROMs that aren't confirmed working for my software version.

If you sucessfuly rooted your phone and installed TWRP, you can flash any ROM that was built for your G3 version, nothing else.
For example, you cannot flash D855 version ROM on your device.

Thanks for the reply,
Does that rule apply even across kit Kat --> lollipop?
For example, will ROMs that havn't been updated in years with the most recent software version being VS985 10b work?

There are 2 words you should look for flashing a rom..
vs985 your device model
bumped
since it's so well known things need to be bumped it may not necessarily be mentioned on everything.. buuuut in most cases it is..
the only other thing to be mindful of is upgrading or downgrading from various Android versions & their modems & such..
oh and if you start messing with kernels.. some kernels will boot loop you if flashed over a different kernel with known issues.. that's usually mentioned in their related threads & by the time you mess with kernels you should be pretty familiar with things..
if you end up with a rom that won't boot.. not a problem.. just go back into twrp & use your backup.. because you should always have a backup made & ready..

[Q] Unable to flash custom roms

I'm unsure of what exactly is causing the problem but My T-Mo Galaxy Note 3(SM-900t. Hltetmo) is unable to successfully flash any custom roms. It's running the official 4.4.2 kitkat as well as the bootloader installed from kies 3. Currenty I have a beta version of twrp installed that works with the 4.4 bootloader and I've tried a few different roms with varying issues. Is it just not possible to flash custom roms on this official bootloader currently?
The roms I've tried flashing to name two are Tweaked and W03's Slim. I've only done clean installs and even cleaned out all of the SD card / internal before attempting but the roms either won't boot, and the phone just heats up or loop endlessly. I made a nandroid backup of my stock rooted which I have no problem going back to after each unsuccessful attempt but I've yet to figure out why. If anyone has any tips or advice it's much appreciated.

Tweaked is 4.3 the ROMs are not interchangable
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3
That would definitely explain it for tweaked, but Will's seems to be a kitkat 4.4.2 rom. I'm unable to get that one to work either when many seem to have no issue. Due to my post count I'm not able to directly ask in each of their threads so there's it's anything I can do I'm willing. I'll research if it's possible to downgrade back to 4.3 but from what I read already it doesn't look like it.
- Edit
After some research it looks like Will's is modded in some way to have kitkat's version with the 4.3 loader. So that would explain why I'm unable to flash that as well.

They need different sections here for this. One for 4.3 another for 4.4.2.
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3

It would probably help sort out things a lot better, yeah. Shame.. I didn't think an update could possibly go this bad but lesson learned. If anything.. I've had zero problems with kitkat it actually does run better and smoother but the locked down issues are unacceptable with Knox.

What lock down issue.
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3
From what I understand once updated to the official 4.4.2 kitkat the updated bootloader in 4.4 makes it so you can't downgrade. It's much more locked down compared to the official 4.3 JB. As such I'm stuck on 4.4. From my research there's only one model of the note 3 that can downgrade and it's the W8 model.

[Solved]Can't boot past lg logo

Solution: Needed ZV8 modem, that's all.
First of all, let me get this out of the way: the only access to being able to search the forums is via the XDA premium app, and I can't seem to figure out how to make it search for complete terms so when I search for "ls980 won't boot past lg logo" it searches for each word rather than the whole search term, so I end up with results for people wanting to make a logo for something, or talking about other LG phones, etc. So I apologize if this question has been answered a million times before, I personally have had no luck manually searching for an answer.
Basically, my issue is that my brand new insurance replacement LS980 won't boot past the LG logo when flashing things like the lollipop version of AICP. I've tried flashing a few different baseband and modems because I vaguely remember having this issue before when ZVA was still new, that most AOSP roms would fail to boot if you were still on ZV7 or ZV8, or were testing a version of ZVC.
So, can someone tell me what I need to flash to be able to run lollipop roms? IIRC I had this issue with some CM11 based roms too, but not all of them (as I'm currently running the very last AICP before they transitioned the nightly to lollipop)

If you still have custom recovery. Is it TWRP at 2.8.1 or higher.
Download zv8 modem from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451426
Wipe everything but internal. Flash ROM, radio, gapps. Boot.
This is how we upgraded zva to zvc on d3rp.

Ah! That's the issue! I was assuming it needed a more recent radio, like ZVA or ZVC. Didn't think ZV8 would be the one. Thank you!

Have you unlocked your bootloader ?
No not too sure how to do that. Any good threads you guys reccomend.
Many thanks
So I know this is scary for you and because it is something new, therefore be sure that you want to live with the responsability if something goes wrong.
Now, the next forum thread tells you how to flash an already rooted image BUT, and this is very important, this works only if you have the version 10c installed (Check in About Phone>Software Version)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765
If you have the latest version of the software (20a) the best thing is to unlock your bootloader, void your warranty in the process, and flash a custom recovery. After that, you just need to flash the SuperSu zip file and you will have root.
To flash custom ROMs, just access recovery and flash the zip file of your ROM.
I'm using the unofficial CM13.0 and works very good for me, but I do miss the official camera app.
Thankyou very much for your advice okarr. Will look into this

twrp port request for tab s 10.5 lte canada SM-T805W

As you know chainfire makes a cf-autoroot for this model of the SM-T805W cellular tablet. (Having serached the forum here, there is one other post where someone claims to have installed the twrp 3.0.0 running on this model, claiming to use the wifi version download.) I tried flashing both the wifi and lte version of twrp, but claims of it working do not hold up, and both fail to produce a working recovery, and so I think this model just needs its own ported version.
If someone is able to point out a compatible version, I would greatly appreciate the advice. For inspection I have linked the recovery for SM-T805W for the kitkat stock rom.

If my only purpose for twrp is to flash zip files and if root is gotten through cf-autoroot, would it suffice to use chainfire's flashify for all intended flashing? is this function equivalent with it through twrp?
thanks!
Is there a reason you're hanging on to KitKat?
Also existing kitkat versions of twrp work for your device.

I guess I assumed recoveries would be compatible between android versions, but I'm not sure wher this is indicated. I only installed kitkat yesterday to figure what works or doesn't but still didn't see a compatible twrp.
I am genrally on lollipop, and will go back due to compatibility with apps. Is there a working version for lollipop then? Thanks!

If you upgrade to lollipop or marshmallow, no reason why the build here shouldn't work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3074633
wow thanks for the link; having read that it is like the link of the year; you're probalby annoyed i couldn't find ito on my own.
And your twrp works on kitkat as well, as i just flashed it. (i figured it would, as i've flashed the same recovery over different versiosn of android on other devices just fine, although it could have been luck.)
anyway thanks so much for having making this; it is a great device to have.

Help upgrading from root kitkat to marshmallow

Hello I'm currently running 4.4.2 with root and I've been thinking about upgrading to marshmallow. I just wanted to know whats the best way going about it. I'm assuming that I'm going to have to re-enable the software updating app that I disabled for I didn't get OEM updates then upgrade to marshmallow and re-root using one of the guides or would a root keeping app or Survival mode on superSU possibly work? I also believe I have TWRP installed from when I rooted my phone before, I'm not sure if that's important info. Also side note, would their be a way to keep the 4.4.2 touch buttons on the bottom of the screen? They make more sense to me then the new ones. Device info below
AT&T
android 4.4.2
software version D85010d
Model number LG-D850
You can't root on marshmallow so if you want root DO NOT update with that app. the easiest way is to just flash a rom. i have the verizon version (vs985) and all i have to do to flash a custom stock rom, is to flash the right modem before flashing the rom, then flashing modem again after the rom and bam, i just flashed a marshmallow rom from kitkat 4.4.2. you can also downgrade that way just flashing the appropriate modem before and after and bam.! but i dont know about your version, you should definitely check the att&t G3 subforum. you need to be careful and read thoroughly so you don't brick. the thing with vs985 is that there are modems out there that can hardbrick the device, however, it may not be the same for others but, just in case you should read.
Thank you I'll look into that. So far I found this https://forum.xda-developers.com/att-lg-g3/development/rom-stock-bumped-marshmallow-v30a-t3661194 but I still got more research to do since I'm unfamiliar with flashing modems and whatever "bumped" is exactly. Hopefully this weekend I'll have more time to look into this.
