I can't think of any other way to ask the question so forgive me for that convoluted topic, but I'm honestly curious. I just got a G2 yesterday, spent hours getting it figured out, read a few hundred posts and dozens of threads, finally got CloudyG3 running great on it and now I figured I'd pose the question.
Because the Nexus 5 preview of Android 5.0 has been out for a while, and there are quite a few ROMs based on that, and because the LG G2 and the Nexus 5 share basically the same hardware across the board, I'm really wondering why there doesn't seem to be any interest whatosever (or from what I can tell) in potentially porting that over to the LG G2? Is this device really that far out of bounds at this point in time - I say that because I know the "crowds" flock to the most popular devices for ROM development by nature, and that's fine.
I'm not knocking the amazing work of each and every dev here at XDA Developers - it is after all a forum for them, not casual users like myself, so I'm happy to be able to partake of the products and ROMs they create for so many of us to actually put to use.
It just seems a bit odd to me I suppose that the G2 and the N5 are basically the same devices when you really dig into the hardware specs (with some differences, obviously, but they share far more in common than they don't). I mean, I remember when the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G came out and there was a ton of stuff you could do between them since again they were basically the same devices in different packaging much like the N5 and the G2 happen to be also.
Is there something I'm missing here, something that flat out makes porting over any version of that Nexus 5 Android 5.0 preview code to the G2 impossible? Or is it just not worth the time for whoever to do it - I'm not a dev at all, don't have nearly the talent for this kind of stuff that so many others do so, I'm a dead end myself.
This CloudyG3 port of the G3 stock ROM is damned nice, it really is, it's like a totally different device in many respects with enhanced features the G2 has always been capable of anyway (the 4K video recording, etc) and this ROM brings that out.
I'm just wondering now what LG has in mind for their initial G2 Android 5.0 release after the first of the year.
Anyway, just thought I'd toss the question out there as I can't find a single thing related to this here or at the LG G2 subforum either. If it's absolutely not possible, I can comprehend that - it's just that the hardware is so similar I have to wonder why nobody has put forth any effort at all, I guess.
Comments and discussion are always welcome...
We don't need or want to port the preview lollipop version from the nexus. The g2 is going to have have an update to lollipop 5.0 either Jan or Feb. The lg g3 will be getting 5.0 before us so a dev may port that rom before our official update. Also cm12 should be coming out this month so we will have a 5.0 lollipop very soon. Hope that answers your question

It's a start I suppose, just seemed weird that the preview code has been available for quite some time and apparently nobody considered it worthy of a porting attempt.
And yes, I realize that when Lollipop drops for the G3 someone (Cloudyfa, hopefully, because of his excellent CloudyG3 for the G2) will most likely do their best to port it over fast, probably before we even see the official G2 build appear which will be pretty cool.
Fun times ahead...
I also think it is due to it being just a preview. No developers feel it is solid enough to work with.
I also agree that it is strange that the g2 and nexus 5 are almost completely alike except camera of course. But no real change of Roms.
Look into the non sprint development. And you will find many support the ls980. You just have to look hard. Being that every carrier and international worldwide have this phone.

i have realized that no mainstream custom rom team is providing its flavor to lg g3 users (even after its specs are somehow more then that of samsung galaxy s5/one m8).. i know the reason might ber "not unlocked bootloader" but there already is a work around by team bump to bypass bootloader check.. i always have used paranoid rom on pretty much all older devices i had(and trust me, i loved i more then any rom out there);but sadly all i can do now is hit on my face with my flagship device as the team is not planning/yet have provided any official support/announcement!
please do consider or i will end up throwing this flagship device and take s5(with lower specs) just for PA :|

Why should we have to buy devices with official support for a free rom? I'd much rather make donations or create a kickstarter for G3 support from PA.
Yes PA has been my favorite AOSP rom since my Galaxy S3 but I don't see why they haven't already begun developing for the G3, especially with an official CM Nightly build for most G3 models D85X.
Unless they are waiting for a milestone or something>
Paranoid, plz support the G3 D855, even if I saw an official experimental I'd still contribute and offer to test.
Plz PA! You guys could take over the G3 XDA forums!
Much love!

We don't support devices that aren't open. We will never officially support the g3 in any form.
You can keep an eye on the legacy community on g+ and hope and pray that the legacy team takes on the g3.
There is more to supporting a device than just having one. That's the first step to supporting it.

What?! Didn't you know that we are supposed to own every device and have intimate knowledge of every device and build for it without having a device in hand to verify everything works?
I mean, hell, it's only money and time, right? Oh, **** I forgot, we don't have either of those things.

T- Mobile LG G3 (d851) is the only with an unlocked bootloader and compared to the other variants of G3, this variant has less roms. I hope they support this variant instead since its the only one thats unlocked

Good luck with that....considering nobody has money to be buying devices like that and it would still fall under the legacy team.

LG has just informed us via a press release that they will be rolling out the Lollipop upgrade to the LG G3 next week. Starting in Poland. LG is claiming to be first to roll out the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. While Motorola has started their soak test for Lollipop on the Moto X (2014), they haven’t started the official rollout just yet. While LG is starting the rollout in Poland we should be seeing it in other countries shortly later on. For those of us in the US, it’ll be closer to December, due to the carriers.
“LG is absolutely committed to giving our customers the best mobile experiences available and bringing Android Lollipop to G3 owners as soon as possible is a top priority,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The new features and improvements in Android 5.0 will bring a whole new user experience to the G3 and make it even better than it already is.”
Android 5.0 Lollipop brings a ton of new features. But for the LG G3, the most notable ones will be the battery and camera features that Google has added. Like Project Volta. The battery life on the Nexus 6 is pretty good, and I’m interested to see how the LG G3 does with the Lollipop update.
It looks like the developer preview at Google I/O this year really helped out the OEMs as we’re already seeing leaks of the LG G3, Samsung Galaxy S5 and other devices with Lollipop on board and this is the third device slated to get Lollipop this month that’s not a Nexus. Wonder if LG is going to beat the Nexus devices this year? It’s quite possible as the Nexus 5 isn’t going to be getting the update til at least November 12th.
Too bad it will look nothing like Lollipop.

That's true. Lollipop is really nice looking on my nexus 7. But won't it help developers to base their roms on the release to make it look like stock?
Yeah that really upset me. Lollipop looks fantastic and doesn't look anything like it.

Nice, despite the whiners and crybabies talking about how it doesn't look like lollipop, they should have known that when they bought the skinned LG g3,why would this update be any different lol... I'm happy LG is doing this update right! Can't wait!

Rooted but not a custom rom here...any idea how the upgrade for us is going to go? Do we need to go back to stock to upgrade?
It doesn't look like Lollipop, IE: it doesn't look like a Nexus device. That's a shocking revelation, and I am appalled. I figured that LG would completely scrap their own UI, and just stick AOSP lollipop on the phone, simply shocking. That said, until ART works with xposed, I'll be rocking KK. Not a big deal either way, and in all seriousness, you folks can't be shocked that LG is keeping their UI, right? Right? Just like every other OEM who skins android.
Got a Nexus 6 ordered so just unrooted and returned to stock awaiting 4.4.4, then will put the LG G3 up for sale.
Damn. And I just ordered my Note 4.
My question is when will there be a stock AOSP 5.0 rom for the G3? This phone is a monster in the spec field, and I want to keep it. I would like to flash a vanilla lollipop rom, however.
So apparently the D855 variant has a leaked build of lollipop booting with no issues...wondering what needs to be done for it to work on the D851? Are the firmwares even compatible?
+1 ....are there any d851 devs alive out there? This feels like the Jedi's are damn near extinct in our neck of the woods.

d851 devs still out there
I am genuinely curious WHAT needs to be done to get it ported over.

That leaked build was paid for by donations. The guy bought the build from LGBB with donations from other forum members. Be patient, CM12 is being worked on and it will be out when its ready.

I wasn't being impatient. I was merely asking questions. Of which you answered none. But thanks for the info anyways.
I would also like to see lollipop ported over to the d851 seems like theres no love on our side can a dev plz port this over for our beloved device willing to donate im sure a lot off us will ...
Really! ? The nexus doesn't even have it yet. These things take time. I can't imagine any of the devs are just sitting around saying they aren't interested in 5.0. If you really want it, s start building! Or wait quietly, but don't criticize the folks who do this for you for free!

Hoping the wi-fi calling source code is included in the upcoming updates to Lollipop.
I dont understand why some folks on xda feel the need to add useless comments in response to a question.. Would it not be better to just (putting it nicely) not respond if you can't help, instead of insulting..
You can consider my comment useless if you want. But you would be better off telling it to someone who cares about what you think.
Can't wait for lollipop!
As the owner of a Nexus 7 2013 LTE (deb), I can't help but feel as if nobody - especially not El Goog, actually give a frak about this device:
No Lollipop OTA yet
No Lollipop Factory Images
Hardly any roms
And not a single word from Google about the first two. Nada.
Now I've been using the one of two Lollipop roms actually available for the device, and I'm liking it, but I would have liked CM or Slimrom or any other custom variation (GROGG88's version is excellent, but I like to have variation to choose form - and now that we don't have xposed it's more important than ever).
I'd like to hear from you users and developers: Until Google step up their game (and even when they do), what do you think we can do to improve deb compatibility and rom variation?
Developers, is there any specific reason you develop for flo exclusively? (other than - I'm assuming - that it's the only device you've got?)
Bare in mind that this is an open discussion thread, I'm not blaming or requesting anything from anyone. Let's just talk about it.
I own a deb device. And agree that support is limited. I have grogg88's rom installed and must say it's one of the best available. I do also have cm installed. But wish there was more available. Hopefully Google will release the update soon
Of course it's not abandonware. Stupid question. Lollipop only came out 1 month ago and still has major problems on the devices running it.

This. With all the issues being reported on this forum alone, I have no desire to update to 5.0 or 5.0.1. I want all the new bells, whistles, and pretty colors, but 4.4.4 does everything I need and want.
I'm really hoping the GravityBox devs will find a way to get it to work with ART soonish.
I hate to be first to ask this on here because its such noob and annoying question but when will we get first Android O roms? (not talking about official stock rom aka oxygen OS) as google released today Android O developer preview
We don't. Previews are for google devices.
The March release is an "N" beta version - "Android 7.1.2 Public Beta 2 Build: NPG47I"

Not soon. Custom ROMs will be there a few days after the "O" is officially released. Forget about dev previews.

Please don't ask questions like this... O isn't even final yet until it's officially released and uploaded to AOSP you wont see it till August or later So back end of this year first roms will appear
You know its a stupid and annoying question by yourself. So why you ask....?

are you alright?
Someone might try it, who knows. It's better to wait for an Official though.
Soon, very soon. In January 2018 or the fastest, in december 2017. Don't hold you breath, it's dangerous.
Just correcting my earlier post . From https://developer.android.com/preview/overview.html
"The O Developer Preview runs from 21 March 2017 until the final Android O public release to AOSP and OEMs, planned for Q3 2017."
Lol. Yes it's always exciting to have a new version bump every year. I love how they do the grout previews so early for us to test for bugs and comparability. Were at the point me where we are going to have mostly refinements and a few more custom ROM features slowly coming in. I really enjoy Android and it's open nature. Android o hopefully will come to the op3 but let's be honest are you still going to have this phone that long from now? Not me I'm selling and using to the one plus 5. Hell probrably only lose$150... Love this phone and what this company is doing. Updates are being taken seriously as well.
