I'm very curious with TV Out Picture Quality? It's better than Touch Pro or not, what about the resolution (still 480x800 on TV or not) ? My dream is use this features to surf internet on my 50 inch HDTV
For what it's worth, I tested it with video and Video-googles - and it works just great.
The video googles are "only" 640x480 , I did not test internet & stuff like that - if I find an old-fashion TV - I'll test .
(in my house, there is only MediaPortal + DLP projector/and 30" displays) - without composite input. - Projector does have, but they are installed so nicely into ceiling, it's hard to get to.)

OK sorry for the delays people, I haven't forgotten.
All content is hosted on my home server so can't guarantee the speeds or availability.
All photos were taken in a moderately dark room and the images shown on a 78" 4:3 IWB (interactive whiteboard) with a 4:3 projector. Hence the image is letterboxed.
When running in TV-out mode, the phone will REMAIN in landscape mode even when the keyboard closed.
My first tests were with CorePlayer. I was also unable to play and show movies in CorePlayer properly, there was weird blue bands running all over the screen during playback. I also tried the YouTube Player which worked fine though.

The quality seems OK but due to the limitations of composite video, you if there is too much fine detail its going to look like s**t. For example check the following shots of Opera both zoomed in and out.

I know the question of viewing BBC iPlayer on the TP2 has been raised before, but it seems like none of the suggested solutions really works very well, or at least not for me.
I've tried the trick of adding the Samsung Omnia user agent code in Opera 9.5. This works up to the point where the Streaming Media app opens, but then the video never loads - it just stays at 0% buffering for ever.
One can, of course, use Skyfire to access the iPlayer website, but Skyfire looks like pixellated crap and I hate it. Video playback is jerky too.
I did come across a stand-alone iPlayer app a while back, but it proved too unstable to use; constantly crashing.
The best results I've had so far are with using myplayer. Unfortunately I'm too cheap to shell out for Coreplayer so instead I use the Streaming Media player for actual streaming, and for downloaded material (which it says is "higher quality" - is that true?) I use TCPMP, which is not altogether satisfactory as you only get about 80% of frames rendered. I imagine Coreplayer would do a better job of playing the downloaded .MOV files, but even so, the resolution you're getting on those is really pretty poor compared to what you get out of iPlayer on a desktop PC. Downloads from myplayer have a resolution of 480x270, I think - certain 480 horizontal. Downloads to iPlayer desktop are, what, 640x360? And streamed content from iPlayer on my desktop PC (in "large" mode) has a resolution of something like 850x480.
Now, if I were starting with (say) a 720p .mkv file, I could feed it through the Encoder app, and cook it into a .mp4 file with 800x480 resolution and 750kb/s bitrate and it would play back beautifully using HTCAlbum as a player - HTCAlbum (and, indeed, Windows Media Player) do a far better job of video playback than CorePlayer on the TP2, thanks to their making far better use of the GPU. Is there any way of capturing high-resolution output from iPlayer on a desktop PC, and then using Encoder on it in the same way? Can this be done either with the flash videos that one streams to a desktop browser, or with the (encrypted?) .mp4 files that are downloaded to iPlayer desktop?
Are there any possibilities I'm missing?

Well, as I've already said, that doesn't work for me. Possibly because O2 blocks access to iPlayer streams, I don't know. What sort of playback resolution do you get? Full desktop res? Does the streaming media player cope without dropping frames?

Out of curiosity I went back and had another go at this. Connecting to iPlayer over GPRS, EDGE or 3G, I now get a message on the website saying that iPlayer doesn't work over my network, and that I need to connect using WiFi. A note elsewhere on the website says that iPlayer is available over 3G for people on the 3 or Vodafone networks, but not on others. (I'm on O2). Connecting (briefly!!!) over my office's wifi network does work - the video can be played and opens in the Streaming Media Player. (I did try this once over a public wifi connection in my local Pret-a-manger, and it didn't work correctly).
However, even over wifi, the quality when streaming like this is even worse than I get from a myplayer .mov download - the resolution is a risible 320x176! So none of this really address my original question, which is how one can get better resolution out of iPlayer.
EDIT: Just to clarify, if I use myplayer to get streamed output from iPlayer, using Streaming Media Player to play it, this also gives me 320x176 video (but at least it manages to bypass the restriction on the O2 network, so it works over 3G). It also (sometimes) gives the option to download the programme in question, in the form of a 480x270 .mov file. Playing this nicely probably requires CorePlayer - TCPMP drops about 20% of frames.
Of course one could move the .mov file off the phone, re-encode to .mp4, and move it back on, and play it with HTCAlbum, but if you're going to go to that much effort it would be nice to be able to start with a higher-resolution video... which is where we came in.
Did a little more experimenting yesterday. Didn't really get anywhere, but in case anyone else has a bit more imagination than I have....
Some programmes on iPlayer now have two additional links. There's the standard "download" link (which downloads the programme for iPlayer Desktop on the PC). There are also (sometimes) two others which let you download the programme in WMV format - one suitable for desktop PCs, the other for "mobile devices".
Downloading to iPlayer Desktop produces a file with a .mp4 suffix, but no other application besides iPlayer Desktop (either on my PC or on my phone) seems to be able to make head or tail of it.
The "mobile device" .wmv file can be played correctly on the TP2 using Pocket Windows Media Player, but the resolution is the standard mobile 360x180 again, which makes it unwatchable. The intended-for-desktop .wmv file is much higher res - something like 680x544 (I forget the exact numbers, but it's roughly that). When played back on a desktop PC, Windows Media Player realises that it's in anamorphic format and scales it to 967x544 or thereabouts. It looks quite good.
Putting this file onto my TP2, however, doesnt work so well. Pocket Windows Media Player does play it, but playback is quite jerky (not surprisingly, as the bit rate is very high) and, even more annoyingly, it fails to recognise that it's anamorphic and plays it at "native" aspect ratio, which is useless. There doesn't seem to be any way to get it to stretch it.
I tried feeding the desktop WMV file through the Encoder application to convert it to 800x480 .mp4, but the end result is a video where sound and picture are both gibberish - the .wmv is obviously encrypted in a way that the encoder doesn't recognise.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

It's very likely the connection to the server you're hitting up or the adobe flash player. The phone can decode HD mkv files with ease, so it definitely has the processing power. Adobe Flash may not be optimized for the mobile device, so it might be the cause of the problem. However, I'd venture to guess if you tried streaming on a computer to some of those sites, you'd have the same problem if the connection isn't strong.
This is often the case even with Icefilms.

I just got my AFTV and sideloaded XBMC (signed-xbmc-13.1-FireTV(v6)) on to it. I have Audio Passthrough enabled so that my MKV files with AC-3 and DTS (not DTS HD) can go directly to my receiver. What I am noticing is that the Playback of these files (Over a wired Network both devices connected to a Gigabit switch) seem to be jittery or choppy (not so much that I can not watch them). I am coming from a WD Live TV and it never had this problem. I have tried playing the files via SMB and NFS shares and both seem to show the same results. The file sizes range from 400MB to up to 10GB. I have tried both Hardware Acceleration and Software. Is this a limitation of the AFTV (Which I don't want to believe because the WD Live TV has way lower specs) or is there a certain setup I have to do in the Settings to get it to play 100% Smooth?

I experience the same with my FireTV and the Ouya. It's really noticable when the Motion Interpolation settings is ACTIVE on my LEDTV.
With the Motion Interpolation desactivated, It's harder to notice, but it's there.
Glad to see that i'm not alone noticing this.

So I am guessing it's a limitation of XBMC? Movies off of Amazon Prime play flawlessly, but I assume those aren't MKV's. I really like the box but this is a deal breaker for me. I have a huge collection of BluRay Rips in MKV format. I guess it's back to the WD Live TV.

I got flawless playback of non-DTS MKV on the Sony NSZ-GS7 I once had until replacing it with Fire TV because it got corrupted somehow.
I think Fire TV is missing proper support for a lot of essential formats.

I had that problem on one file, I demuxed and remuxed using MKVToolnix and it played flawlessly after

Just to be clear, the hiccup I talk about is hard to see for a common human eye (my girlfriend doesn't notice at all). The movie plays really well,
But for a 24p on 24hz refreshrate fan, the tinny hiccup is noticable. jdawng0024, do we talk about the same thing ?

Mine is noticeable to everyone who sees it. The file plays but is Jerky. Coming from a WD Live TV the Amazon Box Plays worse. I have been reading the forums for a couple of days now and I might install an older version of XBMC. All of my files are mkv with DTS or AC-3 audio and they are all 1080p.

Might be a ''noob' question but, are you able to see your rendering stats with ''O' on the keyboard' or with your remote (keymap no.3). Is it really dc:stf-h264 that you see or dc:ff-h264 ??
I say that because I found a bug that, if I play a bunch of music video for example with party mode or not, after a while, maybe 15 or 25 clips. XBMC cannot decode the video with hardware decoding anymore. Even if libstagefright is selected in acceleration settings, the renderer clearly displays dc:ff-h264 for all my h264 video. Because of that, all videos stutters/jitters/frame drop.The only workaround I found is to reboot the FireTV with Home+Play for 5 seconds. And everythings is find until it happens again.

ive also experienced issues with xbmc properly selecting libstagefright. it happened when i was screwing around with both mediacodec and libstagefright enabled. the fix for me was to disable all acceleration, reboot the unit, enable libstagefright, reboot again, good to go ever since.
Ok think I got it a lot better. I restarted from Scratch. Every once in a while I will see it but it isn't nearly as bad. going to try to load the avancedsettings.xml and see if that smooths it out even further.
You are at a stalemate with XBMC since an OTA update reportedly fixed jittery 1080P playback AFAIK.
I found some speed enhancements throughout the weeks,but I never got around to posting them all.
Terribly sorry about forgetting to make that speed enhancement thread to those that want it,I have just been out of it lately.

Could you give more details on this OTA update?
Ended up going back to my WD Live TV. MKV playback blows the amazon fireTV out of the water. I will continue to follow its progress and hopefully it gets better. I will buy it again once things get ironed out.

Hey, just wondering if this ever got resolved. I'm also a WDTV Live user, and I was thinking about "upgrading" to a FireTV with its much snappier interface, more apps, etc. But almost ALL of my movies and TV are h264 mkvs with either DTS or AC3 sound (and some AAC/mp4s mixed in there as well).
Can the FireTV play those kinds of files flawlessly from a SMB or NFS share? It's been months since this thread was active, so I wanted to see if this is a "solved" issue nowadays. Thanks!

flawlessly dude.. the OP was one of the few experiencing issues, i have a huge library of files on my SMB share and they all stream and play flawlessly.

So just sideload XBMC (any particular version/build/etc?) and you're off to the races? No rooting, no flashing, etc?
Plays mkvs containing h264 or MPEG4, DTS or AC3, old xvid avis, etc? Will it play subtitles that aren't muxed into the mkvs (like in an srt file named the same as the mkv)?
I am also experiencing judder when playing 1080p H.264 (AC3 audio) MKV files with the fire TV.
I’ve tried XBMC and MXPlayer. I am seeing judder and frame drops with my AFTV, but can’t figure out why or how to tweak it. The same files play smoothly on my Galaxy S4 and Nexus 7 using MX Player.
Any thoughts?

im rooted but it doesnt matter for XBMC, im running gotham 13.2 , DTS DD and AC3 all work great via HDMI and optical, i would assume it will auto use a local srt file but for sure you can point it to it.. xbmc will scrape the net for any subtitles for every movie i've encountered, so it shouldnt be an issue for you. the XBMC wiki has a good section with everything you need to know about xbmc and the FTV, there are a few device specific settings you need to make and your off to the races.
Has anyone who was experiencing the DTS MKV video judder audo sync issues resolved them? I just picked up two AFTV's and can not get my DTS MKV's to work.

I got AFTV a month ago and did not have an issue streaming MKV videos from my synology nas via WiFi 5GHz. after a few days i started to notice video judder and i switch from WiFi to plug in Ethernet and it made it worse. it appears that AFTV connects better with WiFi from streaming shows/movies compare to plug in Ethernet. is there specific settings i need to adjust for the Ethernet plug to work better?

Can anyone help me. I bought a new amazon fire tv and intalled kodi and use it on my Panasonic plasma 55vt50. All online streaming movies look great, but my own mkv files 1080p 24h movies and series not. When camera movement the screen stutters. I bought a little black box before and had the same issues. Below my problem ( my old boxee box plays everything fine)

Android is "stuck" at 60fps, so you're probably noticing that... No solution that I know of...
Possibly try SPMC 13.4.0. It's based on Gotham but I found it to the smoothest playback. I had all sorts of stuttering issues with Kodi Helix 14.
It won't fully solve it, but it's far less noticeable imo and you get used to it.
Turn off all smooth motion settings on the t.v. That helped mine tremendously

While playing 1080 MKV files I made from my Blurays using BD-Rebuilder, I had an issue where it wasn't buffering, but after a while the video/movie became choppy... Worse than your video.
I read somewhere to go Settings -> Video -> Playback -> select Sync Playback to Display, then set A/V Sync Method... to Video Clock (resample audio). After doing that, I haven't had an issue.
And I needed to do it for SPMC 13.3.3, 13.4.0 and Kodi 14.0
