[Info]:
My only gripe about the trackpad wake mod (while it is awesome), is that we do it in order to avoid reaching for the awkwardly placed power button, but then we still have to reach for it anyway when we want to shut the screen back off. So it only helps us for half of the task.
After trying to find a way to directly map the search soft-key (or any of the soft-keys) to a power button, and failing, I've decided to come at it from a different angle. Attached you'll find a very simple app, that simply turns off the screen when clicked, along with instructions on how to map it to the search soft-key or the rosie button for sense users.
[Options]:
1. Search key short press. This is the method I use, as it is both the fastest and accessible from within any app. It will completely replace the search key. Single-tap it at anytime to turn off the screen. You'll need to install the app, and push the keyboard remapping file that I have also attached. Note that there are 2 different key mapping files, one for Sense ROMs and another for Vanilla. They will make the following changes:
Sense version:
-Search soft-key is now mapped to the user programmable key #2. Set it to open the Kill Screen app.
-www/com key is now TAB.
-USER 3 key, which didn't work anyway, is now BACK.
-USER 2 key, which is now not needed, is HOME.
-USER 1 key (left of the space bar) is left as normal.
Vanilla version:
-Search soft-key is now mapped to the user programmable key #3. Set it to open the Kill Screen app.
-USER 3 key, which is now not needed, is now BACK.
-USER 1 and USER 2 are left as normal.
2. Rosie's right button. This is for those who want to keep the search key as normal. See my rosie remap thread here for the option to have it launch when you press the right dock button. Keep in mind you still need to install the app, and you'll (obviously) have to be viewing one of the home screens to press it.
NOTICE: Do not post asking me to adapt this key layout to your needs, as we will end up with 500 different files before long. Instead, change it yourself! Editing this file is about as easy as it gets. You don't need anything special installed, or any programing experience whatsoever. Simply open the attached (or your own) vision-keypad.kl in any text editor (Notepad, Notepad++, etc) and change your desired key to your desired function. If you want to know what key corresponds to what number, you can boot to clockworkmod recovery --> advanced --> key test. Touch any key on the phone, and it spits out the number.
NOTICE #2: As with any app that is given administrator permissions, you will need to remove the app from the admin list in order to uninstall it. Menu --> Settings --> Security --> Select Device Administrators --> Uncheck Kill Screen. Then uninstall as normal. You will be reminded to do this when you first give the app the admin permissions.
[How To]:
Method 1 - Install the app, then grab a copy of the modified key layout and then reboot to recovery and enter this code:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/usr/keylayout/vision-keypad.kl
adb push [your saved file location]\keypad_owamod_xxxxx.kl.zip /system/usr/keylayout/vision-keypad.kl
Reboot and enjoy.Method 2 - Install the app first, then see the linked thread for how to get the modified rosie.apk
That's pretty awesome Will definatley try out when I get a Z
Great news but something like that exists already for a few monts:

I used it on the Nexus One and now on the Desire Z.
Works great! Thanks a lot!!

Not quite.
You should read the whole post, people fail to do so far too often on this forum. Of course the app exists, there are multiple versions, both pay and free, on the android market and floating around the forums.
What does not exist, is the remapped key file to make the app launch with a short press of the search key (method #1) and the remapped rosie buttons to launch the app from the right dock button (method #2).
The only method I really cared about is the short-press search button (method #1), which completely replaces the search button, so that it functions to turn off the screen (like it should have been from the factory) like the G1. This also allows it to work while the screen is still locked, so you can single press the trackpad, check the time/messages/missed call, then turn the screen back off without ever unlocking it! But I made this mod and guide, so that you have THREE options: the long-press method (like the one that you linked to) AND two NEW ways.
Using all of the default files while running CM 6.1.1 Colourized, I can get my DZ to sleep only by long-pressing the Search button, not a short-press.
I checked the .kl file and confirmed the USER2 key is 217 and that matches my Key Test number in Recovery.
A short-press of my Search button doesn't do anything.
I've set KillScreen as the default app for the long-press and it works as it should, but I'd like to leave that as a Search (Vlingo) button and have a short-press go directly to KillScreen.
Suggestions?
I tried the Rosie_killscreen.apk , it installs ok i get the little power icon on my Rosie launcher bar but when I press it, it doesn't do anything, I tried to re-download the file in case it was corrupt and re-install it but the same thing happens, nothing. I installed the Rosie_contacts.apk and it work fine but can get the Rosie_killscreen.apk to work. Has anyone gotten the Rosie_killscreen.apk to work?
EDIT- My fault forgot to install the main app..... Sorry, let me try this again.
Update: The app works great on the Rosie_launcher, Just a reminder to install the KillScreen.apk first, then follow the process for pushing the app to the Rosie launcher.
I like this very much!! I have Launcher Pro Paid and I have set it up as one of my swipe options on the dock.
I use cm6.1.1 lockscreen gestures and the "screen off and lock" app. I setup a gesture of "L" and link the gesture to the "screen off and lock" app so when I am on the lockscreen and do a "L" gesture and it shuts off the screen. I also have it set as a shortcut in the dock for adw launcher too so I can lock/screen off just by pressing it. So far it works great.

I'm not really sure what the issue is. If you choose the method where Kill Screen acts as the short-press search, you will not have a long press function anymore.
I'm experiencing a problem with the long press method where the screen turns off for a second but immediately turns back on to the lock screen. Manually launching the app shuts off the screen properly. Anyone else getting this?
I am having problems downloading the 2 .zip files
I use the one called "Lock Screen Button" in the market. It's simple and the icon is very clean.

After a bit of testing I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the capacitive buttons remaining active for a very brief time after the screen shuts off: since the search button is held while the kill screen action runs, it immediately triggers wake. Pressing the power button while holding down any of the capacitive buttons has the same effect (screen turns off then back on to lock screen).
I'm guessing this can be fixed by adding a delay to turning the screen off. Or by setting the capacitive buttons to not wake the screen somehow.
Can't uninstall kill screen app
I installed the KillScreen.apk, however if I try to uninstall the app via the manage applications I get "Uninstall not succesful" and app is still in my applications list.
How can i permanently remove the KillScreen.apk?
As for the app not working properly with the long-press method, you are right, it seems to be bugging. I will take a look and hopefully get a new version up soon. The other two methods work ok, but I don't use that method, so I didn't do enough testing

This is the second time in one thread I've had to quote someone and tell them to READ. Do they not teach you kids to read in school anymore? READ PEOPLE. You are working with rooted phones in a programming development forums, you SHOULD have some smarts to you.
Since you missed the "--WARNING!!!!---:READ:---WARNING!!!!--" text in all caps across the whole screen when you first gave the app permission, allow me to take my time to type it again for you: You need to remove ANY app that has been given administrator permissions from the admin permissions list in order to uninstall it. Since you gave this app administrator permissions, you need to do so. Menu, Settings, Security, Select Device Administrators. Uncheck kill screen. There will be a pop up box. Do not just hit the ok blindly, READ that too. Then uninstall.

Dude relax, no reason to get so agitated!
I actually did press the ok blindly, the reason for that was that the phone didn't do anything after the installation. So i tried to tap the screen to make it work and by accident tapped the ok button before reading the warning post.
If you do tell people to read, please give them the information to read. Either put it in first post or put it somewhere inside the app so people can re-read it.
I managed to uninstall the app, thanks for the info.
Relax, cheers

Actually I do have reason to get agitated! (Even though I wasn't that upset at the time, my posts often just come across that way) Because after 2 years of seeing stuff like this with android users, it gets very tiring! For example: the countless comments on the market for an app that says in the description "ONLY works on Nexus 1" and the commenter says "Does not work on Droid" and rates it 1 star. But I can forgive those, because its the general public. On a development forum, however, I expect nothing less than every member to have their wits about them. Though, realistically, it's probably just wishful thinking.

Lol! I do that same thing in my thread. It's hard to not snap on some people lots of times. I have come to the conclusion that a lot of people just don't have the brain power to read/comprehend certain things. I've had to learn to relax a bit... It's quite useless to argue with them because it just rolls off them with no worries while people like us simply struggle to understand why and end up getting pissed off. It's tough being cynical sometimes
Thanks for the little app! Just some feedback. Wanted to install method 1. Followed the steps. However, it still acts as method 3, long press on search, instead of just the short press. Running Virtuous 0.8.1.
So, I ordered one of these directly, and stupidly from Logitech and it just arrived yesterday. Stupidly because it has been in stock at Fry's for some time now... (The actual Android version, not iPad one).
Now that the keyboard is in my hot little hands, it is awesome, just pure pure awesome.
I did a couple typing tests on typingtest.com and scored 101wpm without errors (usual typing speed is 110-120wpm on a full-sized ergo keyboard); it could probably be better once I get used to it. (TypingTest.com itself is a pita, because the browser keeps trying to steal focus away from the flash typing test; I found a javascript one that I also scored 101wpm on) Although the UI lagged when typing that quickly. A negative of the keyboard: it might feel a bit too light when typing, but it is completely functional.
So... onto using it in applications... in connectbot none of the necessary keys worked at all, no esc, no tab, no ctrl nor alt. I couldn't stand that, so I wrote up a patch this morning to fix0rs it. I have a pull request open and hopefully it'll be integrated soon. The patch works generically across all keyboards that are compliant to the Android 3.0+ specs. The transformer dock kinda gets gypped here because their keylayout is so stupid (no esc, alt on right, etc).
Speaking of keylayout... that's where my next nits lie, most of the keys are pretty great, they're in the correct location. With a couple exceptions: 1) caps lock is left of a, and ctrl is in the bottom left; 2) the alt and search keys are swapped in position, alt should be adjacent to the space bar, and the search key, like the windows key, should be left of alt; 3) there's no recent apps/task switching button, there is a menu button, but I'll rarely use that.
Given those problems, I hacked up a new keyboard layout that: 1) swaps ctrl and caps lock (but the LED works a litte funky, ok otherwise); 2) swaps the search and alt positions; 3) puts the recentapps action on the menu key.
To install the keyboard layout, do the following:
1) have root on your device
2) unzip LogitechAndroiKeyboard.zip
3) adb push LogitechAndroidKeyboard.kl /sdcard/
4) adb shell
* $ su
* $ mount -o remount,rw /system
* $ cd /system/usr/keylayout
* $ cat /sdcard/LogitechAndroidKeyboard.kl > Vendor_046d_Product_b30a.kl
* $ mount -o remount,ro /system
* $ exit
* $ exit
5) Connect your keyboard and enjoy the new keylayout as described above.
This keylayout can be reverted at any time by removing Vendor_046d_Product_b30a.kl and reconnecting; this is a new file that will be created by following the above steps.
definitely something i will do when my keyboard arrives!
Did you also swap the keys physically? If so, was it hard to do?
Do you think it is possible to somehow to add other letters, like ÆØÅ, instead of hotkeys or any other keys I would find unnecessary? I'm really struggling to find a proper BT keyboard with Scandinavian/ Nordic layout.

No, I did not swap the keys physically--I only updated the keyboard layout to work as I wanted.
If you want to change the character mapping like you say, it will probably take a combination of the .kl file I included and editing /system/usr/keychars/Vendor_....same_as_I_said.kcm
I only need a US layout, so I didn't need to tweak any of that.
Cool. SERIOUSLY checking the keyboard now..thanks.

You might consider submitting a bug report(or feature request) to Google to have this fixed in a future version of Android. Probably won't make it into 3.2, but we can hold out hope for implementation in Ice Cream Sandwich. This behavior should at least be configurable.
Thanks for the review of this keyboard. I'm wanting to see how the Samsung Keyboard case turns out (and if it becomes available for a reasonable price from a third party), otherwise I might consider this Logitech keyboard. The bonus for this keyboard is that it would be useful with more than just my tab - on my HTPC for example, which has built in Bluetooth.
Question for you regarding the menu button: Did it work for you?
I have this keyboard and when I press my menu key I was hoping it would bring up the app drawer or something. It does nothing.

The menu button serves the same function as the menu button on an android phone--for most honeycomb apps, it'll do nothing (same as in the launcher, nothing) since the menu button doesn't invoke the actionbar. Only pre-honeycomb apps with a menu are activated by the menu button
On my tab, I have MENU set to pop up the recent apps list.

Can you tell me how to remap the buttons? I want to remap my menu key to do something. Also, the "Calendar shortcut" on the keyboard doesn't launch anything either and I'd like to remap it too.
***Edit***
I see I can open the .kl file in Notepad++ and it shows what the layout is. However, I'm not familiar with the key layout (which number corresponds with which key) nor am I familiar with which command to put to have the menu do something. I assume there is a list I could reference?

The .kl file is somewhat self-documenting; simply: look at the key you want to change, in this case, the one that says MENU, and replace it with the action that you want it to do. Look through the .kl files (and any others) and see what actions sound interesting, put that name in there instead of MENU and you're good to go.

I bought one of the Logitech Android keyboards from Best Buy last week and ended up returning it. I thought it was too big and heavy to carry around much. I have a Stowaway bluetooth keyboard thats works great with Android so I'll be sticking with that, much easier to tote with me.

just wanted to chime in on this keyboard.
its pretty great. i use it for school when i need to take notes.
my only gripe about it is that it weights as much as the tab.
Also, if you use a case that can stand the tab up, such as pyro's or what have you then the extra carrier case that they keyboard comes with cannot be fully utilized. I rate the thing 4-out-5.
there is a new keyboard case thats out (ithink) but its 99 bux, i mean if money is no object get it I think its pretty sweet also.
u can get this keyboard for 30 bux online from Logitech. All you need is a logitech coupon that will give you 50% off.
The Note 8 looks great except for the hardware Home key. It's annoying to need physical force for a frequent task that should only take a slight touch.
Is there some way to work around the hardware Home key and avoid using it? Some of the reviews have mentioned on-screen keys, is it possible to keep those enable in all orientations & applications? Alternatively, is it possible to remap one of the capacitive keys to become a Home button?
Any methods or tips about how to avoid using the hardware Home key would be appreciated.
My Galaxy S4 has an Assistant Menu which provides things like an on screen Home and menu button. It's not in my Note 8.0 yet but may be added in a future release I guess.

Button Savior looks helpful, I played with it a little using both auto-hide and permanent display modes. The only downside to hidden mode is it takes two motions, first to expand the menu, then to click the home button. That can be done pretty quickly though.
Why do you like having a hardware button? I don't see why they made 2 buttons compatible with S-pen, and didn't make the Home button usable with the stylus as well.

Habit would probably be the best answer. I came to the Note 8 from a hacked Nook Color running CM10. I got accustomed to waking the device with the "n" hardware button. Like my old Nook, I put a non-slip bumper case on my Note 8 which makes pushing the power button to wake a little tedious. I also like to read in the dark and like the hardware key as a landmark for orientation when I pick it up with the lights off. Finally, I use the tablet in the kitchen on a stand for displaying recipes. I use a cheapest of the cheap $5 stylus in the kitchen to wake it up by pushing the hardware key and for scrolling pages so I don't get the tablet or the S-pen all gunked up with cookie dough from my fingers.:silly:

This is my concern, Im hoping that by using a case that goes over the bevel rather than sits flush with it, my palm will be less likely to brush against the back and menu capacitive buttons when playing games or drawing. My device should be arriving this evening so I will have to experiment to find my best solution. I dont want to mod the software to disble the buttons and get the traditional menu bar on the screen. I value the screen real estate. If they were physical buttons I wouldnt have this issue

Perfect would be an app that could just temporarily disable/toggle it (maybe via a small 1x1 widget). Then if I want to use it in landscape mode (or whenever Im going to use it in a way that could be annoying with the capacitive keys), I could simply turn it on.
I do like the physical/capacitive keys in general too, since I also value the screen real estate so I guess for me a toggle solution would be best. Maybe I'll investigate into it and make it myself...
Or you can add Home button as Multiwindow "app" with this

Hi, there's a way for disabling the capacitive keys, just look under development here on this forum. The mod will disable the keys and require the S Pen to make them work (quite useful for landscape) to enable On-Screen Buttons you should try this (works on the Galaxy S3/Note/Note II) I haven't tested in the Note 8 but I will as soon as I get mine (by the end of this month).
Enable on-screen buttons:
You will need root access for this.
Install ES File Explorer File Manager on your Note from the Play Store. This is a file manager that will be used to edit those system files to enable/disable on-screen/soft buttons.
Open ES Explorer. Then, click the menu button on your device and click Settings. Here, tick the “Up to Root” option. Then go down and tick the “Root Explorer” option, then press Allow/Grant button when prompted to grant it root access. Then, tick the “Mount File System Option” as well. Once all three options are selected, press back to exit the settings.
Hit the Up on top in ES Explorer till you reach the outermost folder (till it says / at the top).
Go into the system folder, then scroll down to find the build.prop file (Copy this file to a Safe location!!).
Tap on this file to start editing it. If you get an “Open With” prompt, select “ES Note Editor”.
Now, at the end of the file (at the bottom after the last line), add the line “qemu.hw.mainkeys=0″ (without the ” quotes), then save the file (press the Menu button to see the Save option).
Then, reboot. After the boot up, you should have the virtual on-screen buttons on your screen.

EDIT
How-to: disable the home button
The thread that Samper was referring to is at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250941
I can't post there yet, so I would like to add here that after disabling the menu/back buttons as described there, I worked out how to disable the home button. Following the same instructions as in the above link, also edit the gpio-keys.kl, changing the last line by adding a # to the beginning, so it looks like this:
Code:
#key 172 HOME WAKE
Now that all three buttons are completely dead (though the pen will still activate the menu/back buttons), I use LMT Launcher to provide pie controls at the bottom of the screen. Get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150. PieControl from the Play Store is an easier-to-configure but less powerful alternative to LMT.
Is there still any way to bring up the virtual keyboard under Chrome (on the new N7 at least), even when you are not on a text box element?
Some sites capture key presses to do various activities, and the inability to use the keyboard is a definite problem.
An example being ajaxterm (implements a remote terminal emulator via javascript and AJAX, quite handy going through overly restrictive firewalls), no keyboard renders the entire thing useless.
Any suggestions?
I'm not sure. The best solution I can think of off the top of my head is to use a custom rom with button mapping. You can set press and hold functions to software keys and hardware (I think).
I'd say a long press on the Recents button to pull up the IME. Typically Back(Hold) is force close, Home(Back) is Search, nothing is assigned to recents(Hold).
That or an app that sits in the notification tray that has a button for IME....
Or again, the quick notification toggles on custom Roms has an IME enable/disable, I think.

I'm just playing around with the multi window feature of my samsung stock rom.
I managed to open to apps side with tasker:
In short: tasker + "AutoShorkut" addin opens a "MW Shortcuts" shortcut.
This works just good and stable with one drawback: Apps seems to be closed before they are started in the side by side view.
For me, that was not enough.
Opening manually with the side bar wont close apps.
So I thought I want to automate the sidebar actions. I already can simulate touchscreen taps with the shell command "input tap x1 x2". I tried to use "input swipe ..." to bring the sidebar to the front but no luck... Is there any other chance to bring the side bar to the front out from a tasker script? I'm also wasn't able to simulate a long back button press. This seems to be the alternative to show the side bar beside a screen swipe.
I've found a solution:
1. Wait 500ms
2. Run Shell -> "input swipe 2559 700 700 700 500" -> timeout = 4 seconds -> use root = true
Afterwards I am selecting the app I wanna open with "input tap ...". The icon position of the app has to be constant, of course
So for here, I managed to automate samsung's split multi window feature. Hope it helps for you. (press thanks )
