Hi,
Anyone know if this is possible:
I am rooted with rbox rooted firmware 5.1.1.4.0_514006420. I have internal swapped to my ssd drive. I want to install rbox boot menu and upgrade to 51.1.4.1_514013920 fixed then restore my data from CWM recovery keeping internal swapped to ssd drive? I'm pretty comfortable with installing the boot menu and upgrading, just not sure if I can restore data from CWM recovery backup to the ssd.
thanks

The bootmenu and mounted a drive to /data are completely independent so you should be fine to install the bootmenu.
As your external data partition will not be mounted during the update process and therefore also not be wiped you should be able to just remount it after the upgrade. To be sure you should have a look in into the update zip if there are changes to files on /data.

Great info. Thanks for the response. Been wanting to try this for awhile but I have so many apps and games installed since I have the storage that I didn't want to give them up and start over.
thanks again

If you want to be 100% sure just make a backup of the ssd. I did the same with an USB drive and hat no problems.
You can also use Titanium backup to have backups from the mounted filesystem.

I just copied the files on a linux PC. Depending on what way filesystem you use make sure to keep permissions correct.
If you only want a disaster recovery backup you can also copy the whole SSD with an imaging tool.
On linux i would recommend using DD but there are imageing tools for every OS.
Titanium backup will also do the trick. So use the tool you are most familar with to have a good backup.

I'm using Modaco R8, and a 16GB microSD card class 2. got annoyed with it and decided to change to 8GB class 10.
I'm using the EXT partition of 512 mb using ROM manager on the class 2 card so all of my apps are installed there. I need to know how do i backup all the apps in it and transfer it directly to the class 10 card without any changes whatsoever.
Please specify any step clearly and if possible the easiest and simplest way to do it.
Thanks!
copy them over using linux, or use a program called android commander to back them up then restore them
have release Class 10 Micro SD?
terrible....I only saw on normal SD with class 10
this is what you do..
- boot into your recovery image (more than likely clockword recovery)
- go to the nandroid menu
- perform a backup
once that's all done.. copy the contents of the SD card (don't worry about the sd-ext stuff, that's all safe in the nandroid backup) to your PC/Mac.
- stick your new sd card into your phone and partition it.
- once that's done, copy the contents back from your pc to the new card.
- go back into your recovery image
- restore from the nandroid backup.
done!

I heard bout this method, wouldnt it change anything to my ROM if restoring the nandroid backup just for the sd-ext stuffs? this one or the linux one is easiest and reliable?
Seriously guys, learn how to use Ubuntu, won't take more than an hour of your time to learn the basic tricks on how to copy + paste between ext partitions. I just booted up with Ubuntu, stuck both cards in, parititoned and then copied and pasted between both cards, and was done in minutes. No issues after putting it back in the Desire.

Yes. There is no decent and free methods on windows. You are better off using ubuntu.

yup
just make sure the card is partitioned correctly and then copy the titanium backup folder with all the programs in it to the sd
Make sure that in titanium backup preferences, Force to same location is checked
start up the program and run the batch restore all apps + data.
Do not restore system data, only apps.
You can use the recovery (from Windows or whatever). After all, it's a linux. Just boot in recovery and issue commands with adb shell:
Code:
adb shell
You need to install SDK and perform that command from the tools directory. If you have troubles here consult the SDK documentation.
Once there you can use the build-in tar to do the backup. This is an example with ClockworkMod. YMMV with others.
Code:
mount /sd-ext
mount /sdcard
cd /sd-ext
tar cvzf /sdcard/a2sd_backup.tar.gz *
To restore:
Code:
<same mount and cd stuff>
tar xvzf /sdcard/a2sd_backup.tar.gz
Also, ClockworkMod's Nandroid backup automatically makes a backup of the sdcard. You can do a complete backup and then restore it using the new sd card when correctly partitioned.

Well, Ubuntu is painless to use. There's a GUI, and there's no need to type funny DOS-like lines, and you don't even need to boot it from your computer. Create a flashdrive with Ubuntu, and you won't even know it was there! This is coming from a guy who has never touched Linux his entire life, until I got my Desire and started rooting!
haha ok ok guys, i really appreciate all the answers, giving me the extra knowledge. and i'm gonna use the linux method.
but i'm interested in using the adb command, which i got confused the very first i tried installing the SDK..i saw too many steps and i got confused.
Okay so here's my question. I've been running a variety of different roms since I rooted almost a year ago and it seems like my sd card is just full of junk from all the apps I've installed/removed as well and any number of files/folders injected when flashing. I would like to know what method I can use to reformat my sd card and wipe it clean. I guess what I'm asking is that if I boot to recovery (AmonRa) and check the options to wipe EVERYTHING, what am I left with? I'll still have the recovery along with usb mass storage capability right? If so, that would mean I could throw whatever rom onto the sdcard that way and reflash it? I'd just like to start over without any bloat at all and try to keep the card trimmed of fat. Sorry to be long winded and most likely not clear at all. Lol. Any direction would be appreciated.
Also, where is the backup information for titanium located so I can transfer it and restore my apps after all this. Thanks again.

In the titanium Backup folder on the sd card.
Phone:
GN Toro (Verizon)
no OS currently installed!
TWRP 2.3.3 (I know, needs to be updated)
Skip to the bold text for the TLDR version.
So here's the story... I was going to flash the latest AOKP and decided that this time I would do things right! In the past I had almost always dirty flashed, but this time I was going to start clean and only restore data for a handful of apps. So I booted into TWRP and wiped cache, dalvik cache, system, and ..........internal storage! I went to flash the ROM I had downloaded and that's when I learned that I had made a huge mistake :crying:
So I've been doing a TON of reading; I think I've found a solution to my problem in this thread.
I know I can either use ADB push to reload the ROM or use ODIN mode to reflash (although I was unable to get ODIN to see my phone). My concern is that if I'm going to have any chance recovering my files, I need to avoid writing to /sdcard at all costs.
So here's my question, is there a way to get a binary dump of /sdcard aka /media/data without first installing android? I need to be able to do so from TWRP or fastboot. I have the GN toolkit but I don't see any way of doing this. I also have all the drivers installed and working (or so it seems) and ADB installed.
Sorry I misread. I'm not sure how you can recover from that.
I think you should be able to adb push a ROM to it. Flash it and it won't touch the contents of the SD card.

Actually, this is exactly what I did. The new ROM wrote a directory structure and various files to /sdcard, hopefully none of those writes overwrote the data I'm trying to recover...
16GB thumb drive and USB OTG cable. Boot into recovery and use dd to dump the user data partition to the thumb drive.
Probably too late for that, since you've already written files to the partition.

Ya know, I have a huge thumb drive and a USB-OTG adapter, I never even thought of this! Thanks, if I ever need to do this again I will try that.
I was able to recover most if not all of my pics (the only thing I cared about losing) using this guide I linked above.
Glad that method worked. It's kind of scary with GN having a single data partition and no ext sd. Coming from a device with separate /data and /sdcard partitions plus and ext sd, I miss being able to back things up onto the card.
I've read everything I can about my issue and not sure what to do. I was no longer able to install apps because internal storage reported it was full. I went through all the normal "fixes" that I read about here and then gave up and did a factory reset. Now my phone reports:
Internal Memory:
Total space: 9.62 GB
Available space 1.01 GB
What are my options?
Thanks, Maren

Most likely you have some nandroid backups in your internal storage/memory taking up all that space.
Use a file manager and find a CWM and or TWRP folder, inside those folders you will see nandroid
backups which you have made at one time or another. When you find the backups, just copy it to your
computer if you want to keep them or you can simply delete them .........
Good luck!
Download My Drives from the playstore, it will show you all the big files on your phone....and you can delete them

(system root)/data/media/clockworkmod is where CWM backups are stored
(internal storage)/TWRP is where the TWRP backups would be.

Thanks for reply. I use TWRP and all those backups (5 right now) are on external card because that is what I choose. Incidentally I did try to restore to the earliest one of those backups and same issue with internal memory.

Is that the same as Device Storage Analyzer? (My Drives did not show up in playstore.) If so, it's helpful...thanks.
Shows 8.72 GB occupied with the biggest sized file was 501 MB. Next was 52.70 MB. I removed them but don't think all of these will add up to 7GB that's missing.
Yep. I use TWRP and I always choose external memory for backup. Checked anyway, and not there. Thanks for the suggestion.

Though if all comes to fail, you just have to close your eyes and ODIn if you cannot find the source of the issue. What I did when i first got my GS4 and since than I have been keeping up with the storage and know when its acting funky lol

On the Odin note; being that you have your backups saved to your external SD, download time aside, you should be able to zip right through the stock restore and be back to whatever you're on with all 9GB storage like you'd never restored within 10-15 minutes. Just saying, don't be afraid of it. It's pretty quick, simple, and painless.

I used twrp to recovery back to stock from AOSP and now I am having issues with my apps downloading or saving. Any ideas?
Things I have tried:
Tried uninstalling/reinstall,
wiped the cache in the rom,
wipe the dalvik cache/CACHE in twrp
, and fixing permissions in twrp.
NO LUCK Any ideas besides reflashing the stock rom?
TO THREAD CREATOR: Sorry to jump in on your question and everything man. Don't mean to disrespect or nething.
I have had this problem since 4.4.2 after a restore. I checked in titanium backup and if I try to change the backup location to the internal card it will say that it is not writable. I do not know why but it will do this on stock touch wiz roms after a restore on 4.4.2 and up.
there is hope....

Stock recovery wipes everything but TWRP preserves the "virtual" sdcard. There might (or might not) be some advanced option in TWRP to wipe the virtual sdcard, never looked.
Twrp has the wipe option, I knew that already. I wanted to find a way to use it and still be able to flash a rom. In any case I figured out how to transfer a file to the device with the ADB push command after getting adb to recognize the nexus. Will attempt all this in a couple of days.

I guess I don't understand what you mean then as by default twrp doesn't reset your virtual sdcard for a wipe, so whichever ROM update.zip files you had on the virtual sdcard would survive a wipe in twrp, so there would be no reason to copy them back over.
I guess maybe your question had nothing to do with wipe, and you were really asking how to transfer a custom ROM install file to the tablet so twrp can install it. You can do that using adb or mtp or just download the file using the browser on the tablet.
In advanced wipe there is a box for internal storage... and TWRP supports OTG so you can connect a flash drive formated to FAT32 that contains the Zip you wan't to flash and flash it like any other file.

This is what I mean. My virtual SD Card (data/media) is bloated with files I want to get rid of. So I wanted to wipe internal storage to clear all files and reinstall a rom. Using ADB or USB-OTG as iamezio says, I can transfer a rom zip back to the internal storage after wiping it to be able to install a rom. When I first made this post I wasn't sure how to do this.

Well, when you do a wipe from twrp, it is just removing all the files using a delete operation, which you can also do yourself.
The part of your question that seemed pertinent to me is you wanted TWRP to see your ROM file, which is the same question one would have if they asked how do I install a ROM.

twrp will wipe you internal storage with that option you saw in advanced settings. i actually did that one day by mistake and had to sideload the files to get back up and running. if that's what you are ready for, then go for it, it'll do it...
