What's the best ROM? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello all, I'm a long time AOSP user, and its starting to get a little boring to me, I was just wondering, what is every one using, and what would you recommend?

I used many AOSP and various "custom brew" roms. I keep going back to stock for one simple reason: I am tired of workarounds. I install stock 4.4.4 NK2 for my device then I go in with TitaniumBackup and freeze all the crapware and I am done. I love ABSOLUTELY love the customization of AOSP and other user created roms but the tradeoffs of beauty and speed for lack of functionality are not worth it.

How to get rid of all the bloatware?

I'm looking for a simple way to get rid of all the extra bloatware. I don't mind if I have to root and flash a "custom stock rom" to do so. I want to remain stock as possible what is the best solution for this?
BTW I already unlocked my phone don't know if that's going to be an issue.
Thank you XDA.
Clean rom for the win but any rom will do.

Have you gone in to the application settings and disabled the apps that you don't want to run? You can disable several of them there.
Yes, you can go to settings>application manager then tap on an application then click disable.
Only issues is that it still on you phone taking up precious space with useless crap. Custom ROM has many benefits:
1. No bloat
2. Multi-window (with any app)
3. WiFi tether
4. Many more useful toggles in notification area
5. Improved battery life
Root uninstaller. Works great

you can root your phone and install any custom rom. And custom whatever you like
I don't want to use a rom. I want to be most stock as possible.

Then do what "Osu777' mentioned above if you want to remain stock... use the "disable" function in the application manager.

Then you should wait for the Att OTA. Tmobile OTA is due 12/19/12. ATT should follow within the next 2 years. Att can be a little slow.

I've been using SAUROM rom for 2 weeks now and loving it!

Just rooted!?

Hey guys I just rooted my s3 and flashed my first ROM. I was just wondering what ROMs you're using (currently running CM10) and what's some nice apps to get for a rooted device? Thanks!

I'm on 12/26 nightly of CM10. Titanium backup and a ad blocker app.

I would say Titanium Backup, Wifi tether for root users, and Rom toolbox are must have apps.
The toolbox and TB are both really awesome and packed to bursting with features
Oh and +1 to the guy above me on the ad blocker app, it really helps.
Oh and some sort of file browser, root browser has a nice GUI but tends to crash a lot, Root explorer is a little more reliable
Thanks for the replies guys! So glad I decided to root my device and hope to really get into all the ins and outs of rooting!

What i got on board my s3
What I am running is Frankenstein kill joy7 2.1 with the standard AGAT kernel .3.2 which comes with the ROM. It launches on APEX which for me is no big deal. Also Frankenstein also comes with almost no bloat ware.I have been through a few roms and found this one really nice. I have used CM10 and it was ok for me but liked the single core when the screen was off. Titanium is always excellent and even Pimp my ROM or ROM Customizer app. and Goo manager if you are ever plan on switching your ROM. If you are new at swapping ROMs biggest advice anyone could have told me is to do ALOT ALOT ALOT of research prior to switching to a new ROM nothing is more frustrating the a boot loop, soft brick or worse a BRICK. hope it helps and welcome to the custom ROM it gets better from here on out
Oh yes yes, usually some sort of build rpop editor andthe following recovery and managing apps (either one)
ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) + Rom Manager
TWRP and Goo manager
I would also HIGHLY recommend doing a lot of research (like the guy above me said) and you seem inclined so it shouldnt be a problem, a good start would be going to xda-university.com and reading through the entire "Users" section, it very thorough and easy to understand

Minimal Rom for use as mp3 player?

I'm about to get a new phone and so this one can get a new purpose.
As the title suggests I'm looking for a rom with the least amount of features so it can be used as an mp3 player.
I mean I know I can just go ahead and use it as is, but I'm wondering if there is a Rom that would make the phone use as little resources as possible. Like for example simply lacks the ability to use it as a phone.
I can't help but wonder that if the phone features were taken out, that the device would simply be able to last longer.
Otherwise, what would be the most stable, fast Rom with best battery life and how would I go about disabling / uninstalling the things I would not need to accomplish what I'm trying to do.
And which settings can be disabled without everything else force closing on me.
I think the cm10.1 by tiny has the most optimizations and will work better than any gb Rom. You can then just put it in airplane mode and use titanium to get rid of anything you don't need.
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda app-developers app
Thank you. I did nor know cm10 was stable enough. But then, the last time I tried anything close I had issues with the camera which is something I won't need anymore anyway.
Can you think of a list of apps that would be safe to remove considering my purpose? Or perhaps a link to place that has many apps documented already? Obviously I'm referring to system apps that would become useless to me

I have to disagree with my own ROM being ideal for a media player.
For fast and stable, try insensitive minimalist (de-sensed GB ROM that's quick and light on features) or Bugless Beast (AOSP with a few extra features GB).
I don't have a link for the first one but it's in the inc dev forums somewhere.
http://www.peteralfonso.com for Bugless Beast.
I can't honestly recommend CM10 or CM10.1 for speed and battery life, though it is more fun than gingerbread.
Well I must say I appreciate the honesty. I'm indeed not looking for fun on this device. Simply a decent mp3 player is all it would become.
So thanks for the tips, I will look into them this weekend

Was actually going to make the same topic. I don't hardly use my incredible anymore but now I have to kinda. Apparently my nexus speaker decided it was going to be an asshole and crap out on me. So now I'm forced out of hand to use my incredible.
So I'd like to know a few things.
- ROM "Technically won't matter" I'll probably throw on sense 3.5 and use beats with other mods I've found.
- Kernel, unsure if new kernels have surfaced and I'd like to know. Aosp and sense.
- Fast, Minimal as he said. Just suggestions because again I'll probably choose 3.5.
- Best musically playable ROM, which one would be the best use for music specifically.
Thanks in advance.

Can I ask why not? I get not wanting to go as far as custom roms, but with adblockers and access to the system and data partitions, you can do quite a bit without having to go for a full rom.
Well I'm just comfortable with touchwiz and honestly the last phone I had I thought I knew what doing and bricked. So I lost the courage just getting into all this so I'm a newbie...
:'( but I see all the customizations and would love to have them so I just wanted to take the easy way out and get some apks that would work with my stock...

Best way to customize your unrooted phone is probaly thru your launcher of choice... there are some that can be customized more than others, basically what your looking for is different themes/icons which you can find for free or buy in the play store.

Have to agree with lickarock. There's still quite a lot you can do without going all out like full ROMs. If you simply root your phone and load SuperSU (SuperUser), you can load something like ES File Explorer and do simple installs of apk files through there. You really don't have to worry about bricking your phone in that situation.
While I do load different roms on my N2, like you, I just wanted to get blacked out apps also. I'm running blacked out Gmail and Facebook currently, which I loaded through ESFE. Just make sure you uninstall the original apps then install the apks through ESFE and reboot. Everythings running smooth on my phone.
I've had a few scares loading different ROMs where my phone wouldn't boot up and I thought I maybe bricked my phone.......luckily I got it back up and running. Battery pulls suck.......lol
Just be sure to read through all the posts that you find which interest you. Typically, people post issues they are having and possible fixes. If you want to run different roms or something later, just be sure your phone is running the correct specs for it, ie....your baseband version is MA7 vs MC2, not all roms are compatible with multiple versions.
Okay I think I will go that route... ? Say I root it, and 4.2 finally makes its way ota will it still hit my phone or will I have to unrooted in order to get it?

What spary said! You're really better off just waiting for one of the devs to roll the updates out.
Again....read the threads all the way through and if you still have questions, do a SEARCH and see if you can find your answers.......if you can't find after searches, don't be afraid to ask ?s.
GL!
If you want a brick-proof(ish) method to get a Root, just Odin a full rooted restore to your phone. Such as this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241136. Its about as mindless and safe as you can get.

If you choose not to root, there are still several ways to have a highly customized phone.
Personally, I am a fan of rooting. I have rooted every android phone I have had except my Note 2. Long story short, I bought my Note 2 through my business and cannot afford to run into any headaches that can sometimes pop up even to the most experienced flasher. I will say the Note 2 is also the first android phone that I haven't felt the need to root for increased performance. CPU, RAM, Battery life, this phone has all three for days.
I created a thread dedicated to creating a custom look without root. And in many ways this is the most custom phone I've ever had.

It's a work in progress and I am adding more and more stuff all the time.

For a blacked out messaging app you might check out Go SMS Pro. There are downloadable themes and you can make your own.

Galaxy SIII has become slow..

So my Galaxy S3 has become slow over time. I noticed about a few weeks ago how my keyboard simply got deleted and dissapeard of my device.. so I had to go into the google store to download another one - not sure if this is even related to my slowness.
However, I have found the device has become slow. It simple takes a while to load APPS, even when typing and just doing other tasks. I've actually disabled the stuff under developer options that I have found on this forum but it made minimal differences. Also I close out all my APPS using the task manager.
I am not rooted and running stock rom. Currently it has 4.1.2 running. If I were to root the device, can I;
1) Backup my stuff beforehand so when I return I can get my game progress etc. back?
2) Will rooting it make a difference?
Thanks in advance.
You will have to buy titanium backup, but worth every penny.
And yes rooting makes a vast difference in speed, stability, and just about everything else.

I did some research and apparently the Carbon Backup APP from the playstore is able to do backups without having root access. So I was actually able to back up my phone with that I guess..
Now, what would you recommend installing once its rooted? What rom?
Its a matter of preference. You have 3 choices. Aosp, touchwiz, or miui. After that it's just preference. All aosp is more or less the same. Same goes for tw. Just different settings or features in each version

Yes. But there are different uhh... "Flavors" of touchwiz

Specifically for #2, yes rooting can making a huge difference.
Generally there are either TouchWiz (Name of Samsung's "skin" atop Android on the S3) roms that have huge amounts of customization like Hyperdrive or a debloated and "lighter" rom for better battery life, less lag, etc. On the other side, AOSP or stock Android can come in many different forms, 100% bone stock, All-in-One Roms like PAC, or simpler roms like CM 10.2 or AOKP. I prefer AOSP based roms a lot more than the TouchWiz roms because they generally seem very snappy and give me more internal space too!
AOSP Roms I Recommend:
Bam Rom (not on XDA) http://get.bam-android.com/
Task 650's AOKP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684
Best one IMO: Quantum by pwncakes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390147
Hope this helps!
