Hey all
I recently unlocked my bootloader and s-off, but when I was setting up my HTC001 M9, I noticed this Red text in the legal jargon just after the first language screen. Is this text part of the legal setup we agree to, or is it because i debranded my M9, which is a full EE UK device bought on a contract.
You do have to scroll down to see it.. youll find it.. if you go into App drawer > setup Icon... dont worry.. you can just back up and come out of setup process.
Thanks
.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I have a question about this. Is this reporting software something to be concerned about for battery life/performance/privacy/etc. reasons? Other than switching to s-on, is there any other way to get rid of it, such as installing a non-stock ROM or deleting a file or something?
It's nothing to worry about. It's fixed by going back to a stock state.

Has VZW or HTC ever issued an update or other means by which they have remotely flipped the switch back to S-On? Why is there so much concern about this posted in various threads? Am I missing something?

There are a few who are worried. But overall there is nothing to be afraid of.
Just whatever you do, DON'T take any OTAs!

Basically, it is technically possible to turn a phone S-ON with an OTA. I don't believe it has ever been done however.

I was one of those worried. The only reason I had asked is because if I sent my phone in to get S-Off (which I'm pretty sure I will) and development never really takes off after that, I don't want to be stuck on 4.2.2 for the entirety of my time with this phone. I wanted to know if I COULD take that OTA at some point without bricking the phone. I was told if I changed the CID back to VZW__001, then I wouldnt brick if I did an OTA...

When 4.3 is released, a rooted version will be available within a day or two. There is literally no reason to take an OTA ever.

The fuss is if your phone is ever turned back to S-ON after having been S-OFF, there is a high chance that it will instantly brick itself if you have loaded unsigned firmware onto the device.
If I go S-OFF, proceed to unlock boot loader, install clockwork mid recovery and just debloat my phone or flash a ROM, I should fear bricking if S-ON is switched back on?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but no, no worries with a custom ROM and recovery. Only for unsigned firmware, something like a custom hboot for example.

This is correct. If you flash an unsigned HBOOT and the flag goes S-ON somehow, the phone will refuse to boot because of the failed security check on the HBOOT. Besides that you're fine.

Nothing, all the command does is set the phone back to S-ON. You have to be 100% stock, and I mean 100%, otherwise it can possibly brick the phone

Yep, everything as when you first got the phone - original everything
Also.. why are you going S-ON? Generally not recommended to do so
@EddyOS: I know, you must hate me, I keep asking you the same questions in different threads.
Why everything stock? Isn't it enough to revert those things protected by the security flag back to stock? (e.g. radio) One can have a custom ROM, recovery and unlocked bootloader staying S-ON, the phone is fine with that, so why should it be important to revert those things to stock?
Thanks.
it is not 100% stock, it throws a security flag on the m8. even running ruu afterwards will not remove it.

Don't ask me why it's just a lot of people have managed to brick their phone cause they've had a custom HBOOT (to remove the red writing), forgot it and bricked the phone
@an0ther: I'm not sure I understand what you said. You mean that even if you reset everything to stock (including s-on and the "tampered" banner) HTC will still be able to read another internal "tampered" flag? Or what else?
@EddyOS: thanks, so you are basically saying I am correct, and reverting everything to stock is a precaution to make sure nothing (like the HBOOT) has been forgotten, right?

You don't need to be S-ON to flash an OTA, just stock with everything else (I know cause I flashed the new OTA manually the other day and it worked fine )

Yes, there is no way that HTC will not know that you have messed with the phone. You don't need s-on for ota updates, in fact, if you are s-off, you don't even need to lock your boot loader. Anyways, you can just dl ota updates just as easy.

I have this version of software for AT&T, and I would like to know: If I remove tampered flag and reset to locked and S-ON and then restore using a SIGNED RUU EXE FILE for this software version, will I be ok (as in not get a security warning and look 100% stock)?
Hi I'm sending in my phone for the lens cover issue and I have done everything except s-on to get the phone back to stock.
I am on stock recovery, firmware and everything else. However, I still spot this on the Tell HTC page. Please see attachment.
Anybody knows how to remove this or is this an effect of S-OFF?
Search the development thread or Google. There's a way to get rid of it.

As the phone is S-OFF it's technically a 'test' phone so that warning will appear. It's normal

That should do it for the most part.
If you unlocked the phone, you should still do these:
3. Reset the 'tamper' flag (REQUIRES S-OFF)
4. Reset the 'unlocked' flag (REQUIRES S-OFF)

No, firmware does not change with ROM flashing. And since you are S-ON, your CID should match as well with your RUU. Do you see a bar on the phone? Can you get back into bootloader or recovery?
Also helps to post the error, stops us having to guess what you're seeing

How did it break ? Do you mean, the camera lens cover breaking, or the entire camera breaking ? There are many threads on going back to 100% stock technically. You're lucky that you have S-ON. There's no way of getting back to S-ON once you're S-OFF, apart from resetting the tamper flags. May be the below thread will help you. Can you post an image of your broken camera ?

You can go S-ON if you're S-OFF though it's not really recommended it might give a security warning flag.
Being S-ON to go back 100% to stock would not make him lucky.
He can't follow that guide as that guide needs to make changes that you can only do if you're S-OFF i.e Changing bootloader status to locked instead of re-locked.
If anything it's unfortunate that he isn't S-OFF as that would make going back to stock easier.

Too hard to guess from here. It could be either a hardware fault or a software fault. Did you try installing the stock Rom ? If it doesn't work then a repair is a must.

Technically, yes. Most stock roms aren't rooted. Anyways, you can re-root the device by flashing supersu in the recovery.
