Hello all! New tester and phone junkie. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hello everyone. My name is Stephanie. I have a stock Samsung Galaxy Note 3 from Tmo and a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 n8013. I have been rooting and playing with my phones since the old Palm days. Why I wanted my Palm to be and Apple I will never know. Yuck! Android junkie now! I worked for a year with Sprint as a phone technician. I am ASC certified by them. (What a joke.) I am going to root and I am looking for a good rom to try. It doesn't have to be stable. I don't mind being a beta tester and helping with development. Feel free to send me a message and say "hello." Have a great night or day, depending on your location.:highfive::highfive:

Give the Alliance ROM a try, if you like Android 5.x. That one and DomPop are the 2 best ones I've used and I'm reasonably new to the Note 3 myself. Have fun!

Thanks for the recommendation! I have been on my Note 3 for awhile now. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up. Have a great day!

How many rooted users do you know IRL?

My career is nowhere near anything related to electronics. Consequently, I only know one rooted Android user, but it's actually became a source of bonding for us, since it's a rare little hobby we share. Have you made friends with other rooted users?
Actually, it's a good question. I only know one rooted user and It's my girlfriend who has my old Galaxy S with CM9 on it.
I have rooted so many of my friends phones and installed custom roms that it is unfit...
nice question .. just 1 .. but loads of friends on android, i have converted majority of them
Seven here, as I have convinced most of my boys and they are now rooted along with a few of their friends.
Like your statement regarding "shared hobby", I have to agree in my case and I enjoy the ability to "talk shop" with my kids. :silly:
I personally know 2, I walked 1 of them through while the other guy saw me doing a nandroid, then the rest is history.
Of the dozen or so people I know that have Android phones, I would reckon on about 9 of them running rooted non-stock ROMs. Of the non-rooted ones, I have done my best to get them to take the plunge but no luck so far...
Sadly very few.
I know a handful from work I'd guess 5 or 6. We talk about root / roms but I dont really see them outside of work.
outside of work I know 5 others. My brother and sister. Mother in law, sister in law and my wife.
I manage all those phones hahaha
it's been 3 yrs and i know 0 people who rooted their phone.
I work in with a lot of technical people. However, I can only think of 3 people who have rooted Android devices. Everyone else is missing out.
My wife still won't let me mess with her Droid Incredible - I'd love to get CM9 on that thing for her (or maybe just to feed my own obsession)
I work in IT so I do know a few but percentage wise it is probably less than 2%.

I know 4. once Evo, one HP touchpad, one Acer iconia, and a galaxy S3.
i know about 10 others who i have tried to get into the ROOT/ROM scene but no one wants to jump in. phones including some Droid X2's, Razr, Galaxy Note, and my wifes Incredible 2 and nexus 7 remain untouched because she "doesn't want me to mess anything up"
root? LOL
Root-users friends?
AHAHAHAHAH
My friend watch me like as astronaut , when i show them i have different launcher!
only one friend, buyed used HD2 with miui rooted pre-installed
All my friends love to tweak or mess with their phones so they all are rooted users.
My family (mom, two brothers n me) sister is n iOS fan boo
We all got galaxy nexus n rooted with custom ROM
Mom always ask questions and want to customize more she learning
Two bros on different ROM one on parandroid the other cm10
Mom and I are stock
She love it

i know a few
some fully understand why and what they did, others... well, maybe somebody did it for them
My GF.
But Like another poster, only because I gave her my old Samsung Spica with CM7!
I know one other guy who keeps telling me he's thinking about rooting his SGS but isn't sure..... why??? :silly:
I met a waiter at OliveGarden that had CM7 on his DROID. That was a while ago tho, other than him I know zero people who have rooted their phones.

WTF Samsung.... Why?

Every time I buy a new phone with the latest Android on it, they release a new android a few weeks later. ..4.3 had only been out a short time and barely no phones have it.. And now there's 4.4....pissed....

NOTE 3
You wanted Samsung to delay the Note 3 release so they could put 4.4 on it? dafuq
If you want the latest android updates fastest buy a nexus device
I was on the same upset mood as you with android. However, with the note 3, I have no complain anymore. I haven't had any lag at all since purchase a month ago. It has all the features you need and more. I can finally stop chasing newest and greatest device/software with the note 3.

Yup, and that's the choice you have to make when buying a non-Nexus device. Either put up with the outdated stock ROMs or switch to AOSP-based ROMs like Cyanogen, then you will have the latest and greatest. Samsung likely won't put out a 4.4 ROM till sometime in the spring.
I knew there would be a post like this, and I thought about doing it (sarcastically)...
...Face it, anytime you buy a new android phone, at most the new android version is maybe a year away, no matter what phone you get... (unless nexus) there is going to be a period of time where you dont have the latest and greatest software...
...but, it has been floating around that AOSP roms are in the process of being brought to note 3 (I think by cyanogenmod) and once the first (not to buggy) one comes out, the offshoots wont be far behind (PA/AOKP/carbon *my fave*) now, of course we dont know for sure if any of those will ever come to note 3, but more than likely pa and aokp will (I would think) and it just a matter of time.
so, there is hope for 4.3 (aosp) and 4.4 coming to our note 3 before samsung even gets a chance...
Now this is where it gets really interesting, samsung and HTC are trying to one up each other, or at least that is how it seems to me, and htc said that the HTC ONE will have 4.4 within 90 days... and that phone is much older than the note 3. so hopefully for once sammy will try to beat them to the punch.
Im sure that at SOME point note 3 will have kit kat, just a matter of time.
Oh, and this is what samsung has to say about 4.4 right now
btw, I kind of feel the same way, but its not like it wasnt expected. cant be mad about something you basically knew was going to happen.
my hope is that samsung will do the google play note 3 thing, but with the spen being the "main" feature of note 3, and google play edition would cut that out, its highly unlikely that would happen, but one can dream

We won't see 4.4 til next year. Maybe January-February. Samsung is still going to be pushing the Note 3, since their "curved display" phone won't have similar specs of the note 3 anyways. Note 3 and S4 will see the updates first of course...
You dont buy samsung note devices for the quick updates, you buy them for their originality and beast like specs/software. If your looking for updates go with the nexus line otherwise you only have yourself to blame.

THIS IS TRUTH......... The other thing I find amusing is 4.4 is not that much different than 4.3 I have played around on my tablet with it and TBH...... I would not get that excited about it. :cyclops:

I can't find the source but I read that the S3/S4/Note2/Note3 will be getting 4.4 in November because they want to ensure compatibility with their new watch.
Dumbest first world problem ever. Note3 has been out a month and 4.4 has been out 2 days of which I don't even know if source has been released yet. Imagine the horror if Samsung released the Note3 with 4.2.2!

True. Just for clarity though, source is available from news reports anyway. I haven't tried to sync it. Also, I expect Samsung has access to pre release source along with moto, HTC, and other partners.
Honestly though, 4.4 doesn't bring a ton. These days, new point releases of Android aren't nearly as big a deal as they used to be. I'll likely give it a try once builds are available, but I'm quite happy with the version on the note 3. I would like to see all the manufacturer's up their game though, if for nothing else than security patches. There's no excuse for the "master key" patch taking as long as it did to get released. And that's equally on the carriers.

Absolutely true! If I wanted the latest Android, I wouldn't buy such a heavily skinned device like the Note! The GS4 might see KitKat before spring, but if the Note does before next Christmas I'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Looking for apps similar to Boot Manager

Almost 2 years ago, I had an HTC Inspire. Earlier this year, I moved up to a Galaxy Note II..got it rooted and have been loving it ever since.
However, I'd really like to find an app like Boot Manager. I bought the app when I had the Inspire, but it does not work on the Note II. I tried emailing them...a month ago and no response. Now, reading the reviews, it seems they stopped updating it and just let the app die. Are there any other apps out there similar to Boot Manager for Note II?
I tried asking in the Q&A....129 views and 0 responses.
There isnt anything like that for most phones. Best you can do on the note is dual boot

Thanks hun, I may try that soon....after I find 2 ROMs I absolutely love
I'm guessing all the bad reviews woke up the BM devs because they updated their description:
"We apologize for letting this app die we became very busy with other works, however, starting today (November 7th) we have began to work on this project again. We plan to update soon and will be working on the following: support for Galaxy Nexus JB, and Samsung Galaxy S3 support. If you would like to suggest other points to work on follow us at @init2winitapps on twitter and mention us to contact us."
Which is good news for those people but bad for the ones not on the list....ah well...it was a $3 app that served it's purpose.

Farewell T989 Community

While it's been a great year run, albeit with a few hiccups, it is time to retire my Hercules.
I can remember June 11th, 2013 as if it was yesterday. Waiting patiently for UPS to arrive (and eventually waiting until 10 pm, but that's another story). I received the package from HSN. It was my brand new T-Mobile Galaxy S II. After setting it up and then sleeping. I set off to root it! (No custom rom at this point.) I was surprised at all of the information I found here coming from the somewhat barren Optimus L9. I rooted it and immediately changed the DPI haha. Idk why now because that was the only time i ever changed it! About a month later however all the trouble started. The SIM card slot was broken (one of the pins) and I had to mail it in. So I did! Anxiously waiting for it to arrive again it made its way. I then re rooted and installed a custom rom... that night I was awakened by the sound of the phone rebooting over and over again endlessly.... the power button was suck.... I called Samsung (after trying the many fixes listed here) and sent it in..... it came back a week or so later... 2 days later.... same issue! So then I sent it back AGAIN talked to a manager..... they said theyd just give me a new one.... 2 weeks later it came back....... fixed but not new.... I slapped CM10.2 on it and was super happy. This would be the end of all the warranty issues finally! I then just flashed roms occasionally mainly from Hell Devs and enjoying my time in these threads. I almost crapped my pants when I had Kitkat for the first time . Here we are now though over a year later. Yes this device has caused me many headaches with its somewhat horrible battery life and somewhat odd FC's and RR's but this device is what made me love Android and know that by ditching my iPhone 4 I made the best decision ever! It is now time to say goodbye however. As I have just purchased my first current gen Android device. The Galaxy Note 3! I can't wait to see what lies ahead of me now with this great device and I hope to see many of you over there in the T-Mobile Note 3 Threads! I love you all and thanks so much for making my T989 what it is today, and for making me love android
ps - I messaged a mod about making this thread but never got a reply. I hope its "legal" to post this here, I really wanted to say goodbye and thank you I love you all!!!
I was there too. Have worked up the line through the phones and forums listed in my sig. Good times at each stop.
goodbye! take care!

[Q] Considering Verizon - Are they really bad with rooting?

Hey Guys,
I'm really considering switching to Verizon, but I've heard they're very bad with locking down phones and rooting. Clearly you guys are all here, so they can't be that bad right?
Can you give me the lowdown on if expecting root for the Retail Note 4 is crazy? (Developer Edition isn't an option as I can essentially get the retail Note 4 for free through a family member) I'm so used to having root with things like Titanium Backup and Tasker. Not being able to use Tasker is almost a deal breaker for me.
Also, what am I sacrificing by not having an unlocked bootloader on the retail version?
Thanks for any input, help, and feedback !
No unlocked bootloader means no custom kernals, and more or less just stock roms that are tweaked a little. We would love root, but right now with Verizon it doesn't look like it will come soon. Especially with Android L coming soon (hopefully?). All in all though I love Verizon's service and will gladly sacrifice root for now. I'm sure it will come....eventually.
Don't look for root anytime soon, if ever
Yes, they are really that bad. I'd jump to another carrier in a heartbeat if the coverage was as good, but in my area I have little choice (YET!). If signal is comparable wherever you are, I'd think twice about switching.
Ugh. Thanks for the replies guys.
Tough decision for me. Currently with Sprint and they are so terrible here.
The Edge program w/ the 10 GB family plan and $150 port credit, basically is getting me a Note 4 for free.
Appreciate the replies again. I need to research what sacrifices I'm making without root.
I'll probably take my note 4 back and grab the LG g3 while it's still available from verizon. I don't know why but seems like when verizon finds out that certain devices can be rooted and unlocked they discontinue them. I purchased the HTC OneMAX when they came out last year, and I rooted unlocked and s-off in about a week. That device is only a year old but verizon has discontinued it like 3 or 4 months ago, jeez I wonder why.

Just switched from Sprint as well. Today was my first day with my Note 4 on Verizon from my Note 2 on Sprint. Service is amazing! I actually was not aware that root was hard to get on Verizon? This sucks, but I can sacrifice root for this amazing service!

That's what happened to me. Horrible Sprint signal, loving having good 4G everywhere for the first time EVER. Once I had the Note 4 and discovered how long it might take to root it I considered turning it back in and getting an S5 instead. So hard to go back to a screen that small now though!

Hey I'm on Verizon Retail non-rooted version. Tasker is working fine and I'm using Local Password Lock Plug-in and it's making the lock time changes on the fly.
Yes I do miss titanium back up to freeze those apps they don't allow us to turn off. (disable)

Is the s5 already rooted with verizon? Imo, the s5's processor is already outdated using the snapdragon 801, instead of the 805 like the note 4. Don't mind the smaller screen size that much though.
I took the plunge and no regrets as well. Service is way better, and you can't beat a "free" Note 4.
I found this awesome thread and thought I would link it here in case someone reading this didn't know about it.
What do you miss about root? Let's find workarounds!
Great stuff in there.
