Hi LG guys,
I have general concerns with the amount of dev support that the LG OG series receives. Currently, I am using a Motorola Atrix 4G and I just RECENTLY unlocked the bootloader and rooted it this past weekend and felt a sense of great accomplishment when I completed these tasks after hitting several road blocks. I have to say, I was rather impressed with the amount of relevant information, help, and guides floating around on the Internet a good 1.5 years after its release. I was also impressed with the fact some developers are still working to improve builds.
Unfortunately, I feel a compelled to upgrade my phone since the Atrix 4G does not support LTE. I've been looking at viable options and refuse to go with Apple because I have always loved the Android OS and its possibilities. In fact, I'm even more in love with it now, after being able to put JB on my Atrix.
I did little research and narrowed down my desired upgrade choices to:
Samsung Galaxy S4
LG Optimus G Pro or G2
To be honest, I was set on getting the SGS4 this coming April, however I recently learned that it's likely the S4 will have minimal CM support (if any) and I just can't imagine working with buggy builds for an extended period of time. (I hear the SGS3 still doesn't have a stable CM based build)
So aside from the babble, I was wondering:
1. Is the LG dev community well developed and established? (Might be stupid question to some people, sorry)
2. Does the LG OG line have a stable CM based build?
3. Does LG support the dev community or does it take a Samsung approach (asshole approach) ?
4. How has development and support been for older phones?
5. Does LG commonly make two versions of their flagship phone(s)? [I.E. Samsungs ship with either Snapdragon or Exynos] And which version usually receives a greater amount of developer attention?
6. What's the build quality like on LG OG series? Plastic like Samsung or what? Personal opinions are very welcome.
If anyone else has any info that they feel would further allow me to make a well informed decision, please share it. I know that smartphones are released frequently these days, but I'm still in search for a smartphone that can last me at least 3-5 years (silly I know, but I had a Moto RAZR flip phone forever and loved it). I have yet to find the one ;/
1.The community is given by the users.I guess there is no point in developing for no one, right? So, if there will be many G users, the devs will come too. Right now there a few guys working(thanks for that),but the G(at least the E975 i have) is quite new and it takes time to start things.
2.No, CM is not officially implemented yet.It depends somewhat on 1.
3.Can't really answer that, but,as far as i know, LG is more open to devs than samsung.
4.Why don't you look yourself?Search button is a miracle.
5.No, LG makes only 1 flagship, with differences only in camera, storage and lte modem. There is G with 8mpx,16gb storage+microsd slot and G with 13mpx camera,32gb storage and no micro sd slot. But the CPU/GPU/RAM is identical.
6.G is way better than Samsung's plastics.

I thought about it, but I wanted to get as much feedback as possible.
Personally, if I was going to get any phone right now, I would get the HTC one, with the optimus as my second choice. It will likely have more users and more developers due to greater availability. It has superior specifications, a better screen, better build quality, and supposedly better software. Our phone is great too, just not as new or popular. The glass feels great.

One and optimus are different categories.full hd display vs hd display.compare the one with g pro,s4,xperia z.optimus is top android at medium price.at least here at orange romania, the 975 comes with a super docking station included(LG ND5521).only the dock costs 120 pounds(more than 200 dollars).i payed for my g 300 euros, which a great deal.i could've get the s3 cheaper, but you can't compare them.
I think lg got an unfair bad reputation, since the time lg made phones like chocolate,shine...they were crappy phone, always having issues.but google made the right call and let lg make the nexus4.
Basically,our g is an improved n

Similar specs and similar price in most regions.

I think you should include in your basket HTC ONE (M7) and Xperia Z.
Apart of that.
1. Is the LG dev community well developed and established? (Might be stupid question to some people, sorry) (Not yet, there is a few phones on the market, maybe in the future - People dont like LG, )
2. Does the LG OG line have a stable CM based build? (Not yet, but it will)
3. Does LG support the dev community or does it take a Samsung approach (asshole approach) ? (Neither of them does, but LG seems to be more open about it)
4. How has development and support been for older phones? (Its a market dependent, so, if your phone have been sold a lot, it'll be supported here in XDA, if not, dont expect too much from LG)
5. Does LG commonly make two versions of their flagship phone(s)? [I.E. Samsungs ship with either Snapdragon or Exynos] And which version usually receives a greater amount of developer attention? (LGOG has a lot of model, but basicaly they are pretty much the same, all of them has same processor and screen)
6. What's the build quality like on LG OG series? Plastic like Samsung or what? Personal opinions are very welcome. (My girl has a SGS3 and I'm used to handling it, LG for sure has better built material)
cheers

I wont answer all of your questions individually but If I was to buy a phone in the next months, I would go for Sony Xperia ZL. Sony was named OEM of the year for developper support by XDA staff. They have a decent track report of supporting 2011 onward phones.
I also came from a Atrix. It died from the infamous wifi-bootloop-bug-of-death. The LG Optimus G Pro is a Phablet and it might be too large for you. The S4 will likelly get poor developper support since most Cyanogen staff lifted their nose at it.
As of now, the Optimus G dev community is ok but since the phone have yet to be released in Europe, Not many people are working on it. There also is lots different versions of the same phone with some incompatibility. We have CM for the Canadian version but it's not official. Far from it.
Good luck
As some owners says, the new xperia good on paper and terrible in life.
Crappy screen, performance, battery life, a lot of bugs including auto bricks.
Hey guys,
I need to decide between the LG G4 and the Oneplus 2. I really like the expandable memory and battery life of the G4, but the Oneplus has a great processor and lots of development. So I'm interested to know what you like and don't like about the G4. What should I know about the phone in considering it? There isn't much ROM or Kernel development from what I see here, how do you like what is available? How easy is it to root compared to Samsung, HTC, and Oneplus? How customizable is it? Can you simply OV/UC?
Any feedback is appreciated!
I had the same choice has you. I choosed G4 two weeks ago for a lot of reasons. (I had a Note4)
Problem : Touch default which will be correct in the next update
I prefer G4 against Oneplus2 for : Expandable memory, battery removable, more stable CPU/GPU, great screen, great photos/videos. Good battery.
I haven't root the phone actually, but I have downloaded the bootloader unlocker key on LG website. In fact root seems very easy.
Root is pretty simple and with an unlockable bootloader coming for most if not all variants the g4 development will be booming soon...i love the camera and the overall smoothness of my g4 and plan on keeping it for a long while

Unlockable bootloader...usually draws devs as a workaround is not needed to install custom roms/kernels...also root is an easy process...also i owned the original optimus g the g2 g3 and all had great developement...i will probably be an lg mobile buyer for life...plus an unlocked bootloader on such a powerful device just screams for attention
I highly doubt there'll be much development for the g4. And obviously there'll be way more for the op2. So if you buy a phone to flash roms all day long I think the decision is simple. For me the g4 with root and Xposed is perfect. I wouldn't flash anything else than stock on it if I got payed for it.

I dont flash ROMs everyday. Before my OPO got stolen. I hadnt flashed anything in about two months. I just want to make the phone run the way I want. Why do you think there wont be much development? And how do you think it would compare to g2 and g3 development?

Agreed.
The reason we used to flash roms daily was to fix faults and improve things which usually broke other things...
G4 on latest update seems pretty much perfect.
More time spent doing fun stuff now.

That's great, for now. But when Lg stops supporting the G4 in about a year, I'd like there to be continued dev.
Additionally, there are things I'd like to tweak to make the phone more suited for my use (gov/io, clock speed, processor voltage, wifi seek interval, etc) that I dont think I can do with xposed or with stock.
How much customizability is there with lg stock? What about the Kernels already available?

I'm happy leaving voltages etc alone. It works great as it is for me. Maybe check the dev section for progress but sounds like one plus 2 might suit you better.
The plan I'm on allows a new phone yearly so so fading dev support was never an issue.

According to lgs website the g2 is about to get 5.1...they may even get m...the support from lg is pretty amazing for an oem...i also had my g3 break out of warranty but it was a known issue and lg fixed it free of charge...thats why i stick to lg
I got a private message that really helped me a lot from Zilol. I'm posting it here for others who may be considering the same thing, with Zilol's permission of course
I would choose the G4 if it was overall experience and stability. But root and everything about KDZ is horrible if u are used to nexus-like devices, the G4 is way more trouble and all about being careful and a lot of more work as well. TWRP got erased and if u boot into recovery (stock), it automatically does a factory reset with wiping media too (I didnt know neither of those 2 factors) and I lost my internal storage. I was so mad, I gave the 1+2 a shot. Well, compared to the G4 the 1+2 feels like a unfinished buisness. The battery life isnt really above average. I would guess the SD810 to be the culprit but thats not the case. Its something about standby time, not OST but I guess that could be fixed by a software update. OxygenOS feels like an unfinished buisness, lacking several important features and a certain degree of stability. When I updated to 2.0.2, I lost the search bar in "recents" and "clear all apps" was gone as well, which just makes no sense, since u dont have an option to activate it, at least I didnt found it. The next thing is camera. On short distance its fine and compareable to the G4 but under low lights its another story. the photos arent as sharp as on the G4 when zoomed in but that could be the difference in megapixel count. but the biggest problem (just discovered like 2 mins ago) its just bad when it comes to distance shots. Because the infinite focus doesnt seem to work. When I manually focus, there is a short period where its sharp but when the focus is fixated its not sharp at all. I like in the 27th floor with a whole city to my feet and the picture quality differences speaks for themselves, especially at low light. otherwise the 1+2 cam is fine but not to take picture in the distance properly is an issue, maybe it will get fixed through an update.
I recommend the G4. I like stock android but in my opinion the LG UX was good to go. Its really not that much of a big deal. The cam is great, the battery life fair and u can swap battery and expand storage. The 1+2 does better at flashing and u dont loose warranty through BL unlock, only time will tell. Once they fix fingerprint for CM roms or until M is out and FP becomes native, I cant recommend 1+2 over G4. Or atleast they have to update oxygenos bc the current state is problematic, maybe CM roms are better but right now they lack laser-autofocus and fingerprint so thats a no-go for me. On the other hand OOS 2.1 will be out by the mid of the month, so maybe its worth the wait since its a 2.1 bigger update. Im positive 1+ will give their best but at the end of the day only real life performance counts even if they put much effort in it.
When it comes to build quali I prefer the 1+2 over the G4. The leather back is awesome but the chrome finish on the sides isnt my thing. both feel really good in the hand tho but the alu sides of the 1+2 makes it feel more premium. If u choose the 1+2 btw, be aware of the style swap covers. I bought it in china in the experience store, so Im talking about oem accessories. I bought the rosewood and kevlar back but they are thicker and make the phone more bulky. The standard sandstone covers finishes with the alu sides but the others stand out a little bit. Could be an aestethic problem.

Hello guys, I wanna buy a new smartphone, have a S3 and now I'm tempted to buy the LG G3 with 32GB internal and 3GB RAM. Is a good option for nowadays?
Yes, it's still a good option. However, I would invest in the V10, because it's superior in every way, and will last you longer. The G3's development is dying in terms of stock based ROMs, which in my opinion are the best kind of ROMs.
It is a good choice, but if you're in America, go for the V10. Much better investment.

No - ASOP won't have the drivers for the Laser-Autofocus and I guess OIS is out of reach as well - so no. CM/ASOP isn't going to be anywhere near as fast especially not that CM has no Camera 2 API implemented. The only choice would be a good Camera App to get somewhat good pictures as well, but they're still not going near Stock as it would have to rely on Software totally.
-----
Bottomline of the Story:
I'd love to get the V10 but I neither do have the money noir do they sell it in Germany. Seems like LG hates Germany nowadays ... (curses)

I think in Portugal we don't have it too. And camera is not the most important thing to me so...
EHK! Just found out it 's going to be sold end of december here in Germany as well on Amazon !!!!
http://www.mobilegeeks.de/artikel/lg-v10/
Should probably release at the same time or close in the rest of Europe!
That taken aside:
The G3 is a phone made for people that are willing to do things like opening the phone and applying a Cooling Mod and take a lot of time into customization and tweaking of Stock roms in my opinion - and you loose to much out if you go the ASOP/CM route with it (in my opinion). It 's good - but it 's not perfect and certainly has it 's drawbacks. If you want to go the CM/ASOP route I'd rather suggest an OPO since that one has more reliable and stable kernels of high quality around like Boeffla or AK-Kernel around (eh he) and has it 's Camera ported for CM as well.
TLDR: In terms of value for the money you invest right now and CM-Support ->
1. OPO/OPO2
2. LG G3
3. LG G4
4. LG V10
That said excluding other good phones like the Nexus devices (can't list them all and don't have experience with them either)
Or perhaps go for an Xperia. Sony has a very friendly attitude towards devs, so you'll find busy development on an Xperia.
(insert witty signature here...)
Go for xperia z1 , its basically xperia z2=xperia z3 at very low price
Same cpu, same camera , same performance
Just less ram 2gb and lower quality screen, but still very good
Also xperia z1 is as smooth as z3 or z5 unlike lg g3 which is very laggy and slow, i have xperia z1 and as soon as i started using a friends g3 i could easily notice how slow is navigation through menu, and how aweful is the scrolling speed, looks like 20 fps compared to 60fps on the z1 , a legendary phone that never slows down. Or freezes or hangs up never, always responds in time no matter what you do or install in it.
Only downside of it, is its very low free ram, ,, always arround 300-400 mb(600-700 at best using ram boosters) .(compared to 1.2- 1.5 gb free ram on z2 and Z3)( ps: older xperia z has more free ram, arround the 800mb 900mb) Does make background apps to reload most of time ...
Still better phone than g3 imo. Hope i helped, not many users would tell you this advice
Also dont forget the z1 battery is like twice g3 battery life.
Or you could get z2 , a perfect phone, and has 3 times g3 battery backup ( screen on time) and about twice z1 sot. With my z2 average screen on time using 4g alltime is 7hours ( 5hours xperia z1 and like 3 and half or 4 hours if your lucky on g3
On wifi easily i get 8 to 9 .( this means quick email check, web navigation, some facebook, ) no games.

Got my G3 at the end of May this year and still is my phone. And I can totally recommend it. Can keep up with the best of them. Camera is good too. I'm sure development will boom once we get stock Marshmallow. Here in the Philippines, there's only about a $50 difference between 32GB G3 and the leather 32GB G4. Hope I helped!
Yes, it's a good option, but i don't recommend you to keep the rom stock, you better install an aosp rom.
(Sorry if my english is bad)
I bought my 2nd hand LG G3 D855 , 5 weeks ago.
It is okay for the price (Without warranty).
Don't ever buy G3.

I bought my lg g3 and is very pleased with it and if you apply thermal paste on it it will stop lag when you scroll an such. For me atleast!

Perhaps your friends model was dodgy? Because mine performed amazingly, better than any Z1 or Z3 for that matter. Also, the G3's camera is far superior to the Z3 and below, because unlike those models, the G3's camera is sharp. You'll notice a fair amount of image noise in a Z3 camera. Can't say anything about the more recent ones, however.
And battery is subjective to a LOT of things. You won't always get 7h SOT or whatever. I did once get 6 odd hours of SOT with ~25% left. But again, it's subjective.

Only go AOSP if you don't mind losing out on camera quality. Otherwise, stay with stock. And honestly, the camera is the G3's main selling point, if you don't mind so much about camera, go with a HTC or a Z3 or Z2. Not a Z1. Differences between the Z2 and 3 are negligible.

Hello, i bought the LG G4 2 months ago, and I was really happy, I had the moto X 1 generation for 2 years, yesterday I use it to delete something to pass it to my mom, I noticed the moto x, faster in every single aspect (obviously no camera or heavy games) the normal use of the phone like, take it to check a mail, write notes, calendar, messaging, the launcher is faster in the moto x, changing between app is faster in the moto x, scrolling in chrome is faster in the moto x...
I have stock roms in both phones, same version. 5.1 not root or any kind of mod, no developers options, the animation speed is 1x in both phones...
The point of this post is ask, why if the moto x is an older phone with less specifications it is faster, and how can I make my LG G4 (h815p) faster like my old phone, now this think is making me crazy, why why why... >.<
If there is a problem with my English or you don't understand something ask me, English is not my native language.
Thank for the help.
I don't want to go back to the moto x, but I am really taking it in consideration...
5.1 on G4 has a lollipop memory leak famous bug

Sadly I can't unlock the bootloader of my model :/ and I can only use stock Roms cuz I pay an insurance for hardware and software for full hardware replacement.

You can use LGUP to upgrade to MM and test if it feels better. Any time you need to go to the repair, you can use it again to downgrade and they will never know what you did.

i will try with lgup i didnt know that this tool didnt need to have bootloeader unlocked.
to make sure this thread works for something, after using LGUP and installing Marshmallow on my lg g4 and using it for a whole day i can say that the phone is faster than before it was a really smooth boost, swithing beteewn apps is faster, its just a tap and is open, no more lag scrolling in chrome, everything is better, the only thing i noticed maybe cuz the heavy use is that the phone was hotter than before, i will check this tomorrow.
I had a moto x 2nd gen before I got my g4. The g4 is slower in almost every aspect. I even did a side by side comparison when I first got the G4. The processor that was in the moto x 2014 seems to be superior to the 808 in the G4. Just look at Andantechs reviews of the 808 and 810. They seem to think that they are problematic and that the previous generation 805 runs much better without heat, throttling or gpu issues. It also doesn't help that the g4 has a very heavy skin on top of Android. I may go to the moto Nexus 6 myself, not sure looking at alternatives to the g4 myself.
I am sure that rooting and changing the governor may help too, but I think LGs software couple with a junky processor make this g4 slow at times.
See the following link, scroll to the bottom where it compares the frequencies of phones where the paragraph starts "Looking at the frequency..". It will give you a breakdown on how the 808 works terribly in g4, flex and nexus 5x.

Hey everyone. I made this topic just to discover who regrey buying LG G4 and the reason why they regret. If they dont regret then please let us know.

Why?.I have it since a week and the phone is great, perfect. As an ex M9 user, the G4 is better IMO.
Waiting for 6.0.
No regrets after more than 4 months, you need a BT earphones for music as the 3.5mm is too low and some HTC ported apps to have a perfect UI (thanks Xpirt)
I didn't regret, but I do wish some things could be better (UI & Battery Life). Other than those, I've been relatively happy with my decision.
However, I installed the Resurrection Remix ROM last week and battery life is definitely better and the AOSP UI + CM13 theme engine is 100 times better than stock.

Which variant are you using? For most devices 6.0 is out there and you can manually install it (With or without root )
EDIT: To answer your question: No ragrets. Not even an "a" for an "e" Best phone out there.
Came from a Note 4, love the G4 (stock) the most! Not as much bloat and nonsense as the note 4
I sold my G4 just for modding. I like to mod and unfortunately G4 have a small community. Good luck , best 2015 phone if you dont mind to be on stock.
only thing i regret about the G4 is the inability of most G4 variants to have an official unlocked bootloader ughh damn LG
I regret it and also not. I owned at least half a dozen android phones in the past two years, and the LG was the real bang for the buck with a very great camera. However, this was the only phone I had serious issues with.
H815 - First unit came with the display acting up (stuck pixel clusters), and finally RMAd it, when the motherboard died. I received it back repaired (PCB changed), but the display is now worse than before, the problem is, that it only shows after a few minutes of usage and probably they did not notice it. Stuck pixels + different brightness levels around the stuck pixel area. RMAing it again...
I don't really regret buying it, but if I were given the option again, I wouldn't chose G4.
My LG G4 is flawless. Battery is OK, no bootloops, no stutters/lags, etc. However, I bought it right after it was put in the market for a not-so-budget price and, for my needs, an S6 would've be better suited.
I mean... don't get me wrong. But as far as I don't need a spare battery/expandable storage, S6 would be a better choice. I just got tempted for the 5,5 screen and camera.

Im using H815T.My phone just boot up after flashing V20B KDZ with LGUP.6.0 looks smoother than LP.With V20C after restart comes up an error, but this error is not present with V20B.
Sorry,my english is not the best, that's why i do some errors.
I regret because I have weirdo half screen touch problem, it becomes crazy, but it's not a real problem, but there's still a problem so... and I don't have time to send it back, It does not have fingerprint sensor which is a shame for a 2015 flagship and it's plastic, we need some metal with leather...
But I bought it because of his camera, that's it.
have it for 6 months now (it is my only phone)
I regret:
- bad battery life (no more than 3h SOT)
- no unlocked bootloader / dead development scene (only a handful of ROMs, most are buggy and almost all of them are for H815 eu only models)
- bad sound over the earphones (really weak)
- no fingerprint reader (when all the other flagships have one)
- features that are essentially broken (still to this day), like tap to unlock
Lg v10 hands down would have been much better to have but lg g4 is still a great phone non the less
Overall i do regret.
I really liked the phone camera (front and back), screen, design and the option to remove battery and insert an sd card if needed.
But as i said before i never buy an LG smartphone again. They unlock the bootloader for just a single model and thats it. I like to customize and install mods on my phones, mainly to make it better, faster and that stuff, but my H815P cant be unlocked, and now here i am with a "Porsche that can't past 60mph"
Yet on the bad side, battery is not the best, some bugs even on the stock rom, and etc.
LG, never again. I prefer a not so good phone but that i can do whatever i want than this. Note 5 is the target now.

I was waiting for OTA or update to come through Bridge and couldnt wait more,so i used V20B KDZ and it's done with LGUP.Very smooth really.
regret and disappoint , all about the bootloader
I do ..because of the locked bootloader and i have g815p and i still didnt get MM
I moved to the V10 and I don't regret getting the G4 at all...because I still have it
These are similar phones spec-wise but in hand they are obviously quite different. I've had the G4 since July and just got the V10 a couple of weeks ago.
Already I keep trying to unlock the smaller phone via the non-existent fingerprint scanner lol!

No need to remain in stock, the community worked out ways how to root. But the biggest downer is definitely LGs position on bootloader unlocking. We can have Lollipop root without BL unlock, but no custom ROMs, no root for Marshmallow :/
It's my second Android, my previous one is a rather ****ty Galaxy Ace from 2011. So yeah, compared to that, Im happy with rooted 5.1.
