Home screen background question - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Call me odd but i don't want a background on my homescreen or lock screen. I simply want it plain black. But I see no option to simply pick no background which with every other smartphone I ever owned or messed around with resulted in a plain black background. How do I set no background? Thanks

Just find a black image and use that.

go on google find a black background and set it as the wallpaper?
Take a picture on your phone in a dark room with your camera facing down on a desk and set it as the wallpaper?

I had thought of doing that. But I thought the idea of the no background was so that the background wasn't consuming resources. Every time I exit an app it has to load the background like android decided to turn it off while in the app. So even though the background image would be all black it's still going to have to go through that processing. I am not sure of the impact of that. I know with older devices having no background was recommended because it consumed resources. I don't know why there is a no background setting, it seems kind of stupid that it was left out.

Display Brightness App

I posted this before when all the SGS3 variants were under one forum. Now that they're locked, I just wanted to post this here as I know a lot of people liked the app. I use it everyday.
One thing I definitely miss on SGS3 coming from SGS1 and SGS2 was the ability to change the brightness setting from from the top of the notification bar. You were able to slide your finger left to right and be able to change the screen brightness.
Display brightness can do something similar and thought I'd share as I am sure a few of you might also miss the old feature. You can set a screen brightness slider anywhere on the screen and change its transparency. It works a treat to be able to change brightness quickly and efficiently. I set mine to be on the left side of the screen horizontally, and set transparency to 0 so it cannot be seen. Then when I need to change brightness quickly, I just slide the bar up or down. There are quite a few options and different sizes you can choose. Also, you can set it so that there is a one second delay. This helps to avoid touching the bar by accident and changing brightness on you.

Anyone getting error when trying to install?
Specifically "Error processing purchase..."

Have it installed and really like it.
One problem I'm having is that I set it to Enable the Indicator on my screen, and it periodically turns off. A bit frustrating. But other than that, it's great.

I get the error trying to install apps every time I flash cm10 and then go back to stock. If that's the case youd notice it trying to install other apps on the market. Either case it's a market problem or the rom you're on. I normally fix by clearing market data as well as google framework data too. Then reboot and I can install apps again. It doesn't sound like an app problem though
Also the indicator shutting off I have not seen before. That could be a result of task manager app or something shutting it off somehow

I thought about that. If so, it is the system manager, because I do not run task managers.
I do have System Tuner...have nothing set in it's killer. I did set this app as excluded (which my understanding is that excludes apps from availability to kill). I think maybe it did help, but did not cure the issue.
Ultimatum rom lets you change brightness from the top. However the min brightness doesn't go low enough on this phone. Too bright in dark rooms

I use another app called screen filter for the darkness issue. Check it out! You can then make the screen MUCH darker depending on preference. I agree, the screen does not go low enough on this phone especially at night when in a dark environment.

I swear by this app. Greatest thing ever for texting at night or even (Yes I know, shame on me) in the movie theater.

Black 1920 x 1080 png wallpaper

Small (3K), black wallpaper image file. I like my desktop black; it makes it very easy to see the icons/widgets. They really pop in front of that absolutely black background. I use it for my lock screen wallpaper as well. From what I understand, the AMOLED screen loses less power when displaying black, so if this is the case I suppose it might even save some battery. I figured someone might like it.
*Changed calling it background to wallpaper, for clarity.*
Yeah this is a good idea, from what I understand the pixels that are truly black on the screen are physically turned off so it saves power and has a true black color instead of a dark lighted pixel you would find on older phones or cheaper screens.. Would be cool to have a "power save" kernel profile set to change the wallpaper to this if it dropped below a pre set % too... Thanks for this.
How much time do you actually spend looking at the home screen when your screen is on, though?
I'm sure it would save a little battery if you did that, but most people don't. Typically people are going to be making calls, texting, or using some other app that doesn't have a pure black background.
Sent home from work early bcuz some1 4got teh nsfw tags
Yeah, I realize it probably won't do a whole lot to save the battery, but I figure every little bit helps. I really just like the way it looks (I prefer a simple, stripped down, no eye-candy approach) & I think it makes the icons easier to see than any other wallpaper. Also a feeble attempt to contribute a little something on XDA, where I've benefited so much.

If its set as the background and lock screen it could help quite a bit. If you get a text and the screen turns on it wont need to activate all those extra pixels.

Were trying to save battery, by installing this app and running it in the background would be counter productive IMO.

Just an FYI - I have been using the mentioned app for a long time and never had it run in the background. I've even cleared data and uninstalled the app and background color persists between reboots. Only problem is you can't set lock screen color with it (last time I tried anyway)

Really, if it's just plain black, why bother with 1920x1080? The launcher would stretch out a smaller image, and it would still be... black.
I created the attached plain black 40x40 png with Photo Editor app, and it's only a few 140 bytes. It's 40x40 just to make it easier to grab the border for the wallpaper setter. Works fine with Nova.

Your solution is better! Hehe. I never bothered trying to make it smaller than 1920x1080, so thanks for that. Every little bit helps...
thanks
Good one. Thanks!

Red flashes around the screen when opening camera or YouTube?

Hi, I just set up my Pixel XL and noticed that everytime I watch a video on YouTube or open the camera app, the all sides of the screen flashes red for a spit second.
I am using nova launcher if that's makes a diff.
SOLVED! it's was caused by "strict mode" in the developer options... It is on by default when you enable developer options. The red frame/flash isnt a bug or screen defect. It is for developers to know when a process is taking time to finish.
I learned something new today!
Edit: SOLVED! I figured out it was the app Rounded Corners giving me those red frames. turns out there is an option that i didn't realize i turned on that allows the app to send me notifications in the form of colored frames around the edge of the screen based on the app pushing the notification in the first place (so youtube comment reply = red, kik message = green, etc) now that i know what's causing it i'm keeping it on lol

All apps are show notch, running granular immersive mode. Still bar above.

So i just got the phone last night and i applied both to try and force any and all apps to show notch so i can enjoy all of my screen. Idc how i have to do it but for whatever reason when i open certain apps, they still overlay a gray, white, black, empy bar where my notifications would normally go and its very frustrating.
I gave granular permission, put full screen on every app and even told every app to show the notch... Is there any other way to bypass this issue so i can get any app regardless if it likes the aspect or not to show the notch and remove this bar?
Could still use help with this https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/471469010672812033/544203189558181900/Screenshot_20190210_120903_com.facebook.katana.jpg

Are just some examples. White bar is where it should show the app and if it were digital, my notch
I have this problem with certain apps even forcing show notch just turns in showing a white bar instead of black in landscape.
I don't think there's something we can do about it atm, I guess it's more of an app incompatibilities with notch since it works perfectly with some apps and not the others. Not sure if it's on Huawei or Dev's app side.
When it doesn't work It's better to let it black than white for your screen.
Thankfully I'm glad I'm not the only one and it's not just a me problem. Thing is. IDK how to force a certain color up above. Like for example if I use Nova to swipe up as search, it will just put a white bar up there... And you can see someone else is doing it cause for a split millisecond it shows the operation as intended with just the search box. Quickly after though it sticks that bar. Same thing with for example Sao internal factor (game)
When you start up the game it'll give you the entire screen, but soon as you check your mail or news and close them, the white line takes over where the notch is. Very frustrating and I feel like it's in the system, not the game... But who knows I could be wrong
I just hope a mod or fix is made soon because if I had know I would not be able to take advantage my entire screen, I would never have bought the phone

Question wash out/fade across the top of the homescreen display

So ever since I have had my 6 pro I notice that when I have a black wallpaper or a dark colour set the top last maybe centimetre from across the top of the display washes out/ fades out Into grey and I have noticed that changing between different colour profiles either makes it less apparent or more worse. I'd like to think it's software as I don't think it's doing it anywhere else but the home screen but I could be wrong.
I think this is a thing to show the QS panel, we had a bug on the betas where there was a line up at the top of the screen to show it too. IIRC that one occurred only on lockscreen though.
That's actually part of the pixel launcher. I hate it with a passion. My mod, which is available now, removes it by default. If you are not rooted you have to use a 3rd party launcher. If you are rooted but don't want to use my mod you can edit the image. Its called workspace_bg.9.png.
