Batter drain after gps usage.

so i found something strange.
the phone will last 24 hrs and lose about 5-10% battery life with light usage.
if i use google maps or any other gps app, the battery after the app is exited / task list show no running tasks, the battery will drain in under 8 hrs. or faster.
my only guess is, tho the app is not running the gps chip is still tracking / fixing to location with nothing making the calls. sort of like a stale process that does not list.
any other fixes for this besides a reboot?

It probably doesn't release the gps resources since they are shared with the other apps that use the gps. I haven't really got the result you're getting, maybe others can confirm or provide solutions.

GPS Power Drain
Yes, I get this from time to time, as I did on all my previous HTC devices. Supposedly, if you exit the program properly (ie, X to close), the program releases the GPS use and power drain stops. Many times, this seems not to happen and power draw continues at a high rate. When this happens, a soft reset is all that seems to stop it.
I have searched this issue for several years and tried many different settings and apps to close/edit resources, but it still occurrs from time to time, with no real pattern.
Guess we have to live with it and do soft reset if power draw is too high after GPS use. I have just gotten in the habit after using TOMTOM for a trip to reset the phone, just to be sure it kills the GPS usage.

My Kaiser used to do this often, I'd have to soft reset to get the drain from the GPS to go away, but I have yet to see this happen on the Tilt 2 and I use the built-in GPS quite a lot actually... I use it for Waze, TomTom, iGO, GPSToday.. I even use it in GCzII for geocaching a bit although the built-in GPS still blows for accuracy.

Why Is The GPS So Bad?

Ever since I've had this phone, I've not had any issues that would make me want to start a thread, except one -- the GPS. Here are the issues I've had, which are probably similar to other's experiences:
1) GPS just stops locking occasionally, and required reboot to fix. This happened at random times, but it always seemed like I had to have the phone on for a long time before it occured.
Solution: Sometimes I can use the "GPS status" program to reset the GPS state, and this would work sometimes. It doesn't always work though, and I need to reboot to get it back.
2) GPS stops turning on at all. This was traced down to my company requiring full encryption of the flash/SD card, which apparently this phone has a bug that prevents GPS from working at all when you do this. I had to remove my work email from the phone to get GPS back.
Solution: None yet, except turning encryption off.
3) The GPS icon in the notifier bar stays on in the "locked" status, even when GPS is turned off.
Solution: Reboot. Not ideal, obviously.
I've also tried replacing the gps.conf file as another user pointed out, but that doesn't appear to have fixed anything. Does anyone have a solution for these issues that I haven't already mentioned, particularly #1? It's getting very annoying when I need to use navigation and I have to reboot just to have a chance of it working.

Get your phone looked at/replaced. I literally have none of those issues.

I know some people have issues with GPS but mine locks INSTANTLY and I have no issues with it.
Locks WAY faster then my HTC EVO 4G ever did!

I havent had one issue with the GPS. I use it in the mornings with runkeeper and it locks nearly instantly. I would say get the phone looked at

I've had similar issues with my GPS.. it takes a long time to get a lock and afterwards it's very temperamental. Unless my phone has an absolutely clear view of the sky in my car it will lose the lock instantly. It's extremely frustrating since I'm coming from a Samsung SGS Vibrant that had a horrible GPS. Samsung needs to start putting in better GPS modules in their phones. Many HTC owners have reported that their GPS works incredible and can lock on sats in their basement etc.

Just to add to my above post about my GPS locking instantly, it even locks instantly in my basement when I have like one bar of phone service.
I'd have to say the GPS is one of the better features on this phone.

I'll echo the view that you should have the phone looked at, I'm coming from a Thundebolt which frequently, literally never locked. My E4gT locks nearly instantly even when my signal is weak.

i leave my gps/ wireless networks off 90% of the time, so sometimes when i first put it on, it takes forever to lock on. i started just putting it on and rebooting and then it locks instantly
sidebar, i love how data isnt needed. i put it on to load the map correctly then turn it off to save battery

Just to clarify, if I reboot the GPS does seem to lock MUCH quicker.. I'm going to flash the stock ROM that was leaked recently and see if my issues go away, if not.. I'll probably see if Sprint can swap my phone out with another. LOS has been driving me insane.. I'm an on-call support engineer so missing a call due to LOS would be very bad for me.

My GPS sucks as well. When it locks (hardly ever) it is super inaccurate. I went to sprint and since I don't have the insurance I had to call Samsung. I'm going to send my phone to them (no loaner). They said once they receive it, I will have it back within 6 days. I'll let you know how it goes.

No problems with gps on both of the phones that I have had. The current one is exceptional actually. I use a GOLF gps program/app WEEKLY and the accuracy is actually remarkable. From my comparing it to a friends gps (also pretty accurate) as well as a LASER rangefinder (to center pin locations) it is usually within 2 or 3 yards from our calculations, which we think is pretty acceptable for our single digit games.
It helps alot on shots inside 150 yards, especially inside 100 when we think it is 50 yard shot and it is really 70, you have a big advantage there whether its 67 or 70 yards compared to your shot of 50 if you didnt have the gps.
It does take about 10 to 15 seconds once you stop moving to catch up and give an accurate yardage, this is likely the program/app as some of them I have tried find it quicker some slower...

A Root Battery Saver App (By Moi)

I've lately got into developing mobile apps and even though i've promoted this as beta, people seem to be using it, but nobody's reporting back! - same goes for all of my apps, i don't get it...
Anyway, i need real feedback and I was wondering if any folks here with a rooted android could help test this app out, it was made on Kitkat, so while yes, it works fine for me, it may not for you... I've had one feedback comment saying that his modem data was not switching off on lollipop, so i added support for that now allowing him or her to use the app as intended, but after replying via the playstore, nothing was heard of him since... almost suspicious lol

How it works, if you're interested!
2 things use up battery power
1. apps that are CPU intensive, eg constantly repeating to connect (this would only happen under malware, as most apps would never do this, it would see the socket it closed/dead and stop and wait until user input, malware would constantly reconnect.. but 99/100 apps will just stop and then do nothing meaning all genuine apps should 'idle' not really using up cpu time....
2. Hardware services, bluetooth, mobile data, wifi, gps, these services are all hardware, so your cpu will switch on each of these services and each one has a significant drain on your battery, go bed at 11pm, by 9am it may have drained 30 - 40% or more... with this app, it will have drained under 1 - 3% depending on your battery (tablets for example should run for days with this app if rooted)
So this app does 2, it first remembers which hardware was on before the screen goes off, so no confusing switch wifi on when wifi's already on (as i've seen on other apps?!) reason why i wrote this because all the other apps i came across sucked really, almost but not quite etc etc..
With this tool, if you're a light user you could quite easily see 60% battery improvement! the bonus side affect of this app is also interesting, for 1, it charges quicker! if you accidentally fall asleep, it will conserve as much power as possible, obviously sms,telephone/mobile network is still running in the background so you can't completely stop a device from draining...
the other bonus side affect was, it kills dead all facebook notifications, twitter, well it would as it disables wifi, modem. 3g, bt when the screen goes off! :good:
1 more feature, if you drop your phone? then what?... take where's my droid, i sms it asking for location... it replies "GPS OFF" and "modem off" simple, send the text message to your phone with "on" without the " " around on, and the app will disable itself so it does not switch off the services and then at the same time it enables Wifi, Modem Data, Gps, Bt pretty useful huh... then on where's my droid, you'll get GPS combined with AGPS data from mobile data giving you pin point accuracy, as soon as you get the data of where it is... type in
off (to turn this feature off) or
on (to turn on all your services)
It also disables itself taking calls...
It has a smart check feature too, let's say after you switch the screen on and for some reason wifi failed to switch on ? after 3 seconds it will then check again to see if wifi is indeed on... if it's not on, it attempts to switch it on again...

So basically what your device is and what's not working (along with build version, lollipop/kitkat etc) and i'll see if i can find a way to add it in to support your droid! - one more thing, i've been releasing updates like a crazy woman collecting cats lately and even though it does all this it's only supporting "Extreme power saving option" come tuesday i hope to have that sorted out so that every few minutes it can wake up to check for twitter/facebook messages for all of those who hate the sound of a phone being blissful quiet

anyway, help me to make it better for you...
One more thing, there are no push notifications, no popup adds, no huge banners, all my apps have one tiny advert to help support the countless hours of programming i'm putting into this apps, with each upgrade i aim to make them more stable and more usable, and i really need peoples help and support even if that is criticism - it's "beta" but i'm almost ready to bring it out after i add the wake up services....

Captivate Glide Batt Life/GPS

I have had the Captivate Glide for little over a month now. It was the rooted rogers version but I flashed AT&t's rooted ICS on to it.
Major issues were battery life and GPS.
Without changing any software I wanted to solve the issues or make them tolerable at the least. Probably better ways of doing this, but this is what works for me.
I assume everyone else is like me and downloaded tons of apps that we like. I personally have 30 downloaded with some form of Google being responsible for at least five of them. I also synced my google account, as well as my outlook account and skype account.
I do not game on my phone I prefer the console style of gaming but I digress.
Simple battery life can be saved obviously by closing or backing out of applications when not in use. You must be avid about this in order to preserve battery life. If you have not altered your ICS it comes with an "Active Applications" widget that makes this simple and easy. Within that widget is an even better function that allows you to clear memory on your ram. Do that for superior battery life as it will close down any program running including back ground processes.
You should also have widgets that allow you to toggle WIfi, and GPS, Bluetooth, brightness, screen time out, sync, and settings. <Extremely helpful in saving battery life. Wifi should be used whenever possible. If your phone is running processes that use data and it probably is, its better to use Wifi for your battery. Turn Wifi off when you can not secure a connection because the phone searching for wifi to connect will eat your battery.
Turn off GPS when not in use. If using an app that likes to have your location you can keep GPS on but turn it off when not directly in use it saves battery like no tomorrow.
Screen brightness is also a huge factor in battery Life. If you Go bright you die, simple as that. Make your screen as dim as you can but still comfortable to see depending on what you are doing. Again the widget makes this super fast and easy but you can go into the settings and adjust this by percentage if you are particular. Other wise the widget allows Bright, half bright, auto bright, and no bright. No bright will save tons of life so learn to see in the dark haha.
Screen timeout at 15s will save tons but can be annoying if your in the process of using your phone. I uses it and just tap my screen if I need it to stay light but trust me it gets old fast but so does a dead battery.
Go to your individual synced accounts and adjust the sync intervals to specified times if possible. Usually find it once you open whatever account and go to its settings. That gives the battery some life in between syncing which uses data and eats battery.
Go to settings and toggle system power settings. This Saves a huge amount of battery life and I have no idea why. You may be tempted to customize but don't. The system power saving is far superior from my experience so far.
One last and final thing to save battery life. The Google Play Store. It runs a ridiculous amount of Background processes. Go to settings, then, data, find the play store and click it, scroll to the bottom and restrict the background data. You will have to turn it back on in order to use the play store and some other apps which leads to my next topic...
GPS
This captivate glide has a notorious rep for being ****ty in these here forums. I am here to tell you its not all true. I am not a software guy as you can see all of my advice is simple common application usage advice. I previously had the SGH-I827 and its GPS was spectacular so I found it hard to believe the captivate glide GPS would not perform well. In fact when I began to use it, it did not. It was glitchy and unreliable. Terrible at best. I thought I was going to have to buy another phone or do some software stuff I had no clue of. I was patient.
And for myself I figured it out.
Everything you do to this phone is reflected in its functions.
All the things I suggested to save Battery Life impede the GPS of this phone. Take that in...
I started over from scratch resetting back to factory settings. (leaving the Stock rooted ics). If your google account backs up all your apps they will begin to re download immediately once you sync your account again, BUT STOP IT!
Don't let anything Upgrade or Download to your phone automatically. This is crucial.
Google maps upgrade must not be allowed. Instead use the current version that comes with the ice cream sandwich OS. (includes the navigate button we all like as well as the places icon) Everything else can then be downloaded or upgraded in the play store manually.
Now, for the tricky part. you have been saving battery life using all the propper previously mentioned techniques but now you want to use GPS. First thing you need to do is uncheck system power settings.. Then allow google play services to have its background data back. Settings, data, google play scroll bottom yea uncheck it. Turn your screen timeout to 10min. Now toggle GPS back on. But wait one more thing, Clear the ram. All done in that order Now when you go to maps you should get a lock in under a minute and it will be reliable. No way of stopping GPS from consuming a ton of battery but if you dim the screen and charge it while in use you will see battery life gains instead of losses.
Thanks for reading my personal usage experience so far. I have yet to take the update to GPS to see if it still works in the same fashion because I am a coward and I like my GPS right now. Let me know if anyone experiments further. With the rooted ICS OS.

Frequent "GPS Signal Lost"

So weird Issue.
Using Google Maps on MaximusHD 6 with the latest t-mo firmware (2.11) I get constant "GPS SIGNAL LOST" when obviously driving and using it as my nav since I got it. I'm in southern California with a pretty good LTE signal almost everywhere. The highways are pretty open so trees, mountains, buildings etc are ruled out as a probable cost.
Now today I noticed that I normally keep the phone locked/screen off when driving since it's connected over BT so there's no real need to look at it. During a normal 15-20min drive I would get the signal lost alert a lot. Upwards of 10 or so times on that single drive. While with my M8 it never happened especially when literally not 5min after getting out of the parking lot doing maybe 20mph down the street. I first I thought i messed something up since I took the phone apart to apply thermal paste to keep it from overheating.
However today on a drive back I kept the phone with the screen on. Never did it lose signal while the screen was on, but a minute after I locked the phone (screen off) did it lose GPS signal. I turned it back on and after driving 20min or so the signal wasn't lost.
So overall has anyone experience a similar issue? Full cellular coverage with frequent google maps alerts that the GPS signal was lost. Maybe a background gps process being killed or another coming up and hindering it.
Gonna wait for the Thanksgiving break to mess around with stock/custom roms and see if it's just something that can be fixed with a reflash.

I'm having the same issue, have you figured anything out? Have you tried using a different app besides google maps to see if it's the actual app doing it's power save feature, or the background powersaving process being started by the phone being screen off? Really interested because my phone starts burning up to extreme temps...

On the backup I had with the issue I narrowed It down to possibly a background process cutting it off once the screen turns back. Power saving was off and all that would stick while screen was off was maps, Google service, and social apps.
As for the cause I couldn't figure it out. I went with a stock from without issues. Then went back to custom roms and haven't had the issue again. Also I drastically lowered my app count. Barely use any apps not needed for basic functionality.
As for the temp issue you're having. I noticed gets warm just like any other device when using GPS. I have opened up the phone and applied a new thermal coat following off a thread around here.
I have another issue came up where the phone would seek out a GPS signal while battery saving was selected to even location turned off. Killed my battery in a heart beat. Hasn't happened again.
I would suggest you make a full backup and either flash a stock rom or redownload whatever custom rom your using. Do a trial run for a day or two with minimal apps and see if it improves.

Here's where it gets interesting..
I used to own a galaxy s3 i9300 and custom kernels caused exactly the same issue. Flashing a stock rom solved it and a few other issues, one in particular was gps inaccurate coordinates.
Now I have moved to an m9. This has in the past run great. It is completely stock and untouched by curious fingers.. However, recently my gps has been running at random intervals even though it is completely off in all accessable settings. I can't find the culprit and it sapped 40% in a few minutes. It was literally a short face to face conversation, jumped back in the car and went for my phone for waze.. Dead as a dodo..
Confuzzled completely as to whether this is the actual rom doing it or an app..
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

Android 6 should be released around here soon so maybe that'll improve/fix these issues. I wouldn't be surprised if Google services is causing this since it has in the past drained batteries and causes similar issues. If the kernel is involved then the issue has been seen on both stock and custom.

well it may be a setting from the maximums HD, try using other Rom and tell us if problem is solved, try HD Revolution or ViperOne.

Hi all, I got a Moto G3 and having issues with the gps no signal message, it is on and off, but more the time that have no signal. So have heard that Android 6 could be the guilty one.. Do any of you know if there is a fix yet? ?
