I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.

I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That would explain why my speed test have been the same on umts and hspad on the status section =( thx mate
Sent from my G2, XDA app =)
When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.
Yea I know I was just looking for like a widget that told me constantly so I know when I can speed test

Yes it would. I'd give it a try but I'm clueless on how to make an app =(

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

Max download 0.89!
Hello,
I am new to Android - do I have to turn on something to get higher speeds?
I consitently get 0.89 no matter where I am.
In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.
I am thinking a bad phone, maybe? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mobile Signal Widget for me also

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

I've not heard of anyone seeing an 'H+' on the phone... *going to read manual*
It seems whenever I don't have a 4g data connection, I'm not getting any data connection. Anyone else have this problem? When I'm in builldings I never get a data connection. Even when I'm outside I rarely get data connection unless it's a 4g spot. I know someone with a GN and side by side, he gets a connection at work while I have gray bars. Is this prevelant among most of you all? I'm on Verizon if that makes a difference.
Yes, I have this issue as well when I am at work but only when I have wifi turned on. With wifi on I get no 4g connection inside the building and the phone won't drop down to 3g, just gives me gray bars and no data. Manually switching from LTE/CDMA to CDMA restores my 3g data connection. Turning wifi off enables the LTE data connection. I assume it's trying to use the building's wifi network that I am not authenticated to for some reason. It's quite annoying and seems to be draining my battery.
My 4g reception sucks. I am rather disappointed. I canceled my ATT account and paid the ETF to switch to verizon for the GN. I am in plano tx which is in the Verizon LTE area and i dont get any signal except in a few spots on the highway. I work in Richardson, which is also in the LTE area, and i dont even have 3g in the building. I dont have any signal when i go deeper into the building away from the windows. I am running stock 4.0.2. I hope this gets better. I am already regretting dropping ATT.

Strange. I have excellent 3G and 4G signal in buildings, coming from Sprint I had non-existent data everywhere, especially indoors.
Just as an fyi. I went to Verizon to try to get a new phone. They told me my sim card was bad. I got the phone on the first day and they said they had issues with the first sim cards with the nexus. My wifes has the same problem.
New sim card, NO MORE connection issues. Yeah! Anyone else who has this issue might try this. I am now getting 3g and even 4g connections inside now.
ill go to the verizon store after work and switch sims. Just got it on 1/1. Ill go to a different verizon store to make sure its not a bad batch lol.
Wasnt the SIM card. Still getting crappy signal strength. I am going today and replacing the phone. If that doesnt work, i am going back to ATT skyrocket...

In my office I get very weak to no 4G signal, so that the phone is constantly switching from weak 4G down to 3G and causing connection disruptions. I usually just disable LTE and use CDMA only mode to fix this. I have heard that a LTE signal should penetrate inside of buildings better, but apparently my workplace is almost impenetrable. We have a Verizon 3G repeater in the office or I would get no usable signal at all.
Spencer, what kind of speeds are you getting with LTE in the Columbia area? It seems like I got better speeds when I had my Rezound than I'm getting with my Galaxy Nexus.

I've had the exact opposite experience in Dallas. I switched from AT&T a year ago. I couldn't even make calls in my house. (I live in Lakewood) I had to go upstairs or outside. As far as data goes even on just 3G the Verizon speeds are much faster. I've done quite a few AT&T vs Verizon 3G side by side tests and Verzion has won every time. 4G is just a bonus for me. When I get a 4G signal there is no comparison. My coworker and I did a speed test on Tuesday at DFW. His iPhone 4s on AT&T vs my Gnex. I was getting 10-15 mbits down and he was getting like 2-3
3G Data
I am having the same exact problem. I thought it was related to airplane mode, I have it turning on at midnight and off at 6am. In the morning, if there is no Wifi and the phone is in 3G, I can't get data. Restarting gets data back, but I'm looking for a more elegant solution than that.
I'm having HUGE data issues, see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421440
just a quick question. are you guys running custom ROMs/kernels? if so, please add that in your post.
none at all here.
After noticing a mod for the GSM model to turn the H to 4G I had a thought..
I'm usually always on LTE (4G icon), but when I'm not and I'm on 3G it always displays a 3G icon and never an H for high speed data.. VZWs 3G is faster than ATTs 3G or "H" any day, atleast in my area (from my experience, I know for a fact AT&T programs some of their phones to display H when not even in a high speed data area - Atrix). So, why no H displayed for VZW? Is it just that they have decided to stay away from this gimmic? Any opinions or info is welcome. I really don't care to ever see the H since I have REAL ACTUAL 4G, but the thought just never occurred to me until now..
Sigh...
H means HSPA+, not "high speed data"... ffs
Verizon's 3G can't catch even UMTS on AT&T and T-Mo, let alone HSPA+ lol. Verizon's EVDO network can't even theoretically go 1/3 the speed of my HSPA+ speeds.
Keep your damn icons. They represent the network you're on properly.
Yeah H means hspa, its only a GSM tech, not Verizon. And ATT hspa is around 5-6mbps. Verizon 3g theoretical limit is 2.1mbps. Can never go higher than that. Verizon 3g is a dead end tech. While hspa goes up to 42mbps on T-Mobile, and 7.2 mbps on ATT, much higher in many areas at 14.4mbps.
Verizon does not use hspa and can never display H.

I know what the H stands for, I was on GSN networks for 2+ years and had 2 HSPA(+) phones. You think "Packet Access" doesn't mean "Data"? If you really want to be technical you are wrong too because H could be short for HSPA or HSPA+, ffs. But I give up, you win the digital pissing match lol, I should have used an abbreviation that most dont know what it stands for anyways. May the gods of XDA and the internet have mercy upon my foolishness.
As far as keeping my icons, I'm glad to do so, My LTE 4G beats the crap out of your HSPA or HSPA+ any day. You GSM people are the ones trying to fool yourselves by changing icons, you sound just as bad as the Apple fanboys thinking they have 4G now after the recent iOS update. I just was wondering if H existed on VZW network, and I have my answer.

Thanks RogerPodacter for your explanation of why Verizon doesn't support HIGH SPEED DATA lol, that's all I wanted to know: VZW doesn't support HSPA, therefore no H icon.
Can we down vote posts? You ask why a CDMA device doesn't display H (which is NOT for "high speed data") and then call people who give you correct information idiots?

I never said the word IDIOT not once, jackass would be a more correct term. You trolls have bad eyesight and are now just making things up.
My question was valid, I am new to CDMA networks and used to GSM. I now know that CDMA networks do not support high speed packet access, which apparently is much more acceptable than calling it what it is, data. You guys are really tripping over your "packet access" not being "data" aren't you? I already said to excuse me for calling it be the "incorrect" name. Yet you keep bumping the thread and then call me the troll?! Just move on already. Your right, packet access isn't data, its GSM fairy dust that magically powers your phone and brings it internet access without the use of data, that's why you dont have a data charge on your bill for it, because its not data. But by all means lets keep arguing semantics because you have a much bigger penis than I do right? Im actually starting to enjoy seeing how butthurt you GSM folks are getting over your slow, not 4G data. Its okay though, you can alwasys change carriers and get some REAL 4G.
So my area is scheduled to get 4g the 17th but I had a few questions about 4g...
First of all how do you tell if you have a bad lte radio? Does it just not connect to 4g or does it do something else? I've been testing to see if I got it yet everyday and it hasn't popped up even once yet so I'm not sure if I might have a bad 4g radio or not
Second of all how long does it take for 4g to pop up after switching to cdma/LTE? does it usually connect to 3g first or just go to 4g?
And thirdly if I have a poor 3g signal (says about 80-90 dbm but my 3g speeds are usually around 200-400 kbps), does it tend to carry over to 4g? (just as in slower speeds than if you have a decent 4g signal)
Hello.
To answer your question about the lte radio... If you aren't sure if your area has 4g and are trying to test by turning it on or off I think your best bet would probably be to ask someone else (who has a 4g phone) if they are obtaining the network. If possible, you could go somewhere you know for certain has 4g (if theres anywhere remotely close) and try it there. I doubt you have a bad radio if your 3g signal is working, have you flashed any roms or are you running stock? If you think the radio is bad you could always try and flash the most recent ones.
The time it takes to switch from cdma to cdma/LTE is almost instant. When you do so your blue 3g bars disappear and it turns grey. After no more than 5 or 10 seconds it will connect to 4g (if its available) and display the blue bars. If you're in an area with both 3g and 4g the phone will automatically connect to the 4g first if it can.
In my personal experience I've noticed that if you're in an area with bad 3g reception the 4g will be about the same give or take a little. I also believe that even if you have poor 3g and 4g the LTE will still have a higher data transfer rate.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for...I know a couple places not too far that have 4g for certain, and as for comparing to other 4g phones to see if they have 4g I can probably just check the local Verizon store
I'm definitely hoping for at least 5 mbps download for LTE speed, which I'm sure is fairly easy to get, I can't stand average 3g speeds of 100-500 kbps and maybe 1 mbps if I'm lucky
I'm supposed to be getting 4g officially here tomorrow so hopefully it all works
Thanks again
I'm in Chicago (both in the city and suburbs), and my S3 always shows "3G" in the notification area.
I know AT&T has an LTE network here, so shouldn't it say 4G or LTE? Could this be a problem with my account--or even the phone?
Thanks.
somewhere in the settings should be a network selection to choose between GSM/LTE(4G) and GSM(3G) only....at least on the Verizon phones there usually is, of course it says CDMA/LTE(4G) or CDMA(3G) only

I have ATT GS3 and it says 4GLTE tiny icon, if you are sure you are in LTE zone and only getting 3g , call AT&T or go to their store , sim could be old/wrong and or your account was not properly activated.
When i got my GS3 i wasnt getting any data at all , called AT&T and they sorted it out.
Run speedtest see what you getting ?
I have at&t in chicago as well. I live up in lake county and work in des plaines. I was also at navy pier a few weeks ago. Never had anything other than 4g or LTE. I literally have never seen the 3g icon on my phone
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the replies. I'll give AT&T a call.
I did run speedtest, while the phone was displaying 3G. the download speed was 7686 and upload 5704.
Well, I called AT&T and they couldn't find any problem. After 20 minutes, they said, "There's a network outage reported in Chicago, so that must be it." I asked how long the outage has lasted, and she said 17 hours. But I've had the phone for four days, and have never seen anything but 3G.
At any rate, they said I would have to call back in a couple of days. That conveniently got the rep off the phone.
I live in a 3G area, and it says 4G on my phone. Makes me feel like they are BSing us to believe 4G is everywhere.
Only time it has been off of 4G is when I"m in an Edge area. Speaking of which, I found it interesting that while driving up I90 in Wyoming (didn't look like anything was there for miles and miles), the data speeds were great. I was so surprised. Driving the much busier highways in the midwest, it is Edge, and it sucks.
Sorry...went off topic.

Your account does need to be flagged as LTE or you won't get LTE service. I'm up in Gurnee and all over Chicagoland has pretty good LTE coverage.
Also, check your APN that you're on the "PTA" and not the older APN settings. If you see anything about cingular wap, you're on the old one.
I recommend going to an AT&T store, it's harder to blow you off when you're up in their face.
I have friends in Aurora, Lombard, Lyons and I used to work downtown; I always had great LTE signal out and about as well as my home area of Gurnee/Libertyville.
Lastly, AT&T distinguishes between "4G" which is HSPA+ and "4G LTE" which is their LTE network. Unless you're running a custom ROM with different icons, you'll have an E for edge (2.5G, total ****), 3G for a 3G area that hasn't been upgraded, 4G for a 3G area that's been "backhaul upgraded" to HSPA+ and 4G with a little LTE beneath it for an LTE area.
For me, I can tell speed-wise between "4G" and "4G LTE" mostly by the upload speed. HSPA+ (4G) I never see above 1.2Mbps or so, whereas on LTE I get up to 5Mbps roughly. Sad story is the LTE network in the Chicago area is the slowest of their LTE networks that I've seen anyway. I get so jealous of people in TX and whatnot that get like 24Mbps!
Sorry for the rambling...
One weird thing...when I click on my results in speedtest, it lists the network as LTE, even though the icon always shows 3G.
So maybe it's connecting to LTE, but not showing the correct icon? Does a download speed of 7686 seem faster than 3G?
To follow up, in case this helps anyone...
I spent another half hour on the phone with AT&T--level 1 and level 2 tech support. (The level 2 guy was much less informed than the level 1 woman.) Their bottom line was that I should exchange the phone.
However, when I use the network signal info app, it says I'm on the LTE network. So, I think I have an icon problem, not an actual network connection problem.
I think I'll just live with it, rather than exchange the phone.
