A quick way to turn off the screen? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a quick way to turn off the G4 screen with the use of the proximity sensor or like double tapping the home button? If I have the phone flat on the table I don't want to lift it up to turn it off and I don't like waiting for it to dim out. I like locking it.

Double tap any empty space on the screen.

Oh wow didn't think of that thanks, but that only works on the lock screen?

If you are using stock launcher, it works anywhere, screen on. With screen off, double tap will wake it up.

Also if you are in an app like tapatalk where there is no empty space ... Double tap the status bar at the top... Works the same.

Tap to turn on backlight only

On my old iphone, when the screen went dim, if you were to tap the screen, regardless of where you tapped it would wake, but on the Evo when the screen dims if you tap it will not only wake the screen but click on whatever you tapped on as well. Pretty annoying when you're in a web browser and try to wake the screen but it clicks on a link.
Anyone know if there's a setting or fix for this?

I tend to just tap the notification bar when I want to bring the backlight back up. Requires a bit more aim but it doesn't click anything.
I tap and drag... doesn't click but wakes LCD

Back to watch

How do I return to the watch screen ? In some apps I can't seem to figure out how to get back! Super annonying having to swipe the screen from left to right 20x some times in other apps to get back. Is there some universal go back to watch swipe/poke/lick/kick i'm missing?
Some apps you need to swipe from the absolute edge of the watch, others you need to swipe on the "card" to close/ get out of it.
Ergo,.. absolute edge you will feel the raised edge while swiping, others you simply swipe from the left side but stay on the glass.
I hope thats helpful.
So there's no one action to return to the watch screen? My Gear 2 had a home button, and it would be nice if the 360 button worked that way as well.
Negative there is not a "home button". I agree it would be nice. It's easy to get lost in the menus.
I usually just tap the power button twice.

Cool, that seems to work, thanks!
I usually just cover the screen with my palm until a feel a slight vibration, that turns the screen off and when you turn it back on, you are back on the face.

I thought covering the screen was to mute/turn off notifications. Do you have to cover it again to turn them on?

No, covering the screen turns off the display and returns it to the watch face.

Swipe from top edge all the way to the bottom to toggle mute, swiping half way to peek at the date/charge level

Tap to wake and lift to wake

My tap to wake and lift to wake are not working. I tested the accelerometer and gyroscope and both are working ok. Screen rotation is working too. Does anyone have these issues?
Try lock screen immediately
By going setting/security & location/screen lock setting/automatic lock to immediately.
Android 7?1 on Pixel XL had tap to wake and lift to wake.
Android 8.0 removed all that. Doesn't exist on Pixel 2 XL.

Sorry, not tap to wake.
It's called double tap to check and lift to check. Even twisting the phone to switch between the front and camera is not working....

just stating for the record, they all work fine in 8.1
hmmm.. so these features are not working on 8.0 for pixel 2 xl? Im just concerned whether its a hardware or software issue.
Do these features work for you guys?
The double tap and lift to check (grayed out) phone options are in ambient display settings. Double tap works, lift does not, 8.1.

Go to Settings, type Double at the top, you should see three settings for the various wake and camera flip. Make sure they're on.
Personally Lift to wake o haven't seen it work on my 2 XL. I'm pretty sure it's been removed.
My double tap n lift are both working fine on 8.0, and my hardware rev is 10 on penguin/panda
Both are working for me, 8.0. Maybe a factory reset will work?

Ditto, both working fine on 8.0 for weeks...
Lift to wake only works if always on display is off.

I have a Pixel 2 XL and double tap to wake, ambient display, wake on receiving notifications and the camera flip gesture, are all not working on my device. Those options are all selected, and I have tried safe mode as well as a factory reset to no prevail. Google's response was to send a replacement however all of the hardware is confirmed as operational. This all occurred after a software update.
Double tap is inactive and does not work. It is selected as on.
Ambient display is on, screen is locked after 5 seconds, however the ambient display turns off after 10 seconds of inactivity.
Wake for notifications, does not wake the screen.
Flip for selfie camera does not work no matter which way I hold the phone.
Android 8.0.0
Same here, pixel 2 XL double tap to wake completely unresponsive. On 8.1 and factory reset.
I have enabled double tap to show ambient display for time and notification and i updated to 8. 1 manually no wipe or reset and that is working normal as on 8.0
Cheers ?

Hey guys
I noticed all these problems after the update to 8.1.
it seems like Google somehow messed up the proximity sensor, that's why ambient screen is turning off and you can't use double tap to wake.
there are several threads to this but nobody really has a fix.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/8-1-update-broke-proximity-sensor-t3718659
for some people the problem was solved after removing their screen protector. But I don't have a screen protector so..
I hope Google is aware of this.
Hey..i found the problem
I had the same issue. the following fixed it.
Settings -> Security -> Smart lock -> Disable all.
Smart lock kept my phone unlocked at home.
After i disabled trusted places....the double tap works just fine. The Flip camera works too after i disabled smart lock.
I hope this works for you too.

Lift to wake

Lift to wake is not very responsive, sometimes it works, a lot it doesn't.. any ideas if anything can be done

It has to be a really deliberate gesture, and you have to lift it to 90 degrees i've found.
I turn it off and use double tap to wake, the most under-rated feature ever.

Thanks, yes i use double tap to view the lockscreen aswell.. it's just quicker for the fingerprint scanner if the screens on when i pick it up.. I'll try be more pronounced. Cheers
Mines is very responsive
Same, I turned it off
I had to switch it off, as I do not always want the phone to wake up every time I pick it! I use double tap to wake, really useful, specially if combined with double tap to lock with Nova launcher

Disable Ambient Display

Is there any toggle/button to disable the Ambient Display? And just show the lock screen when I pickup the phone without pressing any button or tapping the display? So that I can unlock the phone using only face-unlock by just pickup the phone.
you can disable the ambient display, then set double tap to wake the screen which brings you to the lock screen

Thanks for the reply, but my question is, now if we pick up our phone it shows the ambient display. Is there any way to get the lock screen instead of that ambient display when we pick up the phone?

Yes, I'm trying to figure it out how to get it worked using Tasker for past few weeks. My plan is to use the face unlock method on home and fingerprint when I'm not at home. Since the pick up to wake is already there in OOS I thought it can be made in an easier way. But pick up is only working with Ambient Display and not the lock screen.
