Google Maps-how to keep maps on phone

Is there a way to cache google maps of say London on my P3300, so that when I'm outside away from my wifi connection (I have no data connection) I can turn on google maps and use my GPS to navigate the streets of London.
It would be so great if you could download maps for google maps, turning it into a competitor for TomTom.
If you're reading this and didn't know, now google maps let's you use your GPS device (built in for us using Artemis) to locate yourself on the google map. Before it could only use cell phone tower info to provide an estimate of where you are. So now it really can be used for accurate navigation directions, if I can cache the maps on my phone.
Anyone know a work around?

There is software for this. Google Navigator. Did you see it?

General Question about GPS

So I upgraded my phone as described by this site http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=24979 and I was curious what else is necessary to use GPS. The Rom I am using (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=26776) works great but I could not get GPS to work with windows live search or google maps. So did some searching and from I gather, you need to run some other gps program prior or simultaneously to one of the map programs. Is this correct? I downloaded quick gps, GpsViewer.PPC300_2577, and GPS Test. Does one of these programs need to be running at any time I want to use GPS with Live search or google maps?

google maps, should work. I used that for quite a while. it will most likely take a few minutes to get a fix.

does gps only use any data? worried about overseas charges

i'm off on hols tomorrow (cuba) and want to log a few trecks with gps. mobile data will be off and airplane mode on.
in that scenario will gps count as data usage? i assume not but want to be sure
i plan on using mytracks or jogtracker to track my course. it'll only store gps data afaik but will be overlayed on google maps once i've uploaded it after coming home, or if i find wifi over there.

That won't work, It has to download the maps themselves from Google Maps and the GPS uses the web to assist it.

I used OpenGPS abroad (which works in very similar way) with Mobile Network disabled and was only collecting GPS data.
The app tracked my positions, drew the line but and Google Maps were not loaded.
So yes, it should work - as long as you keep Mobile Network disabled you will not be charged for pure GPS data usage.
And you can download the Google Maps layer once you come home.

ferus, sounds like jogtracker/my tracks that doesn't it? i guess they all just show you pretty much the same info anyways
off to a fair few places and want to be able to look at maps when i got home and see where i trekked across.

GPS abroad
I turn off roaming data while abroad as very expensive but I do use GPS and Mapdroyd for location based apps. Mapdroyd stores maps on SD card. Some countries have better detail than others. Works on aircraft as well.

No, GPS will work fine offline and My Tracks will be fine without any data connection. I've personally tried that, you just won't get an overlay but it'll record the tracks. You can see the track later with an overlay on My Tracks or on a computer.

what may happen is the google maps crying "need data connection" though. So you'd be better off installing the brut.mod anyway

NoOb questions about GPS on HTC Desire...

1) I don't use a data plan on my card. Can the GPS work without a data plan on Google Maps?
2) I've seen a few offline maps apps. If I use one of those, will GPS work independent of internet/data access on my phone? (same Q as the first but about offline maps apps)
3) Is there any offline maps app providing turn-by-turn navigation? (m sure it'd be paid! )

1. No as Google Maps aren't stored on the SD card, they're downloaded as you go
2 & 3. Yes, if you have an offline navigation client it should work. E.g. CoPilot

It is like you use the gps for cars, your phine receives the data from sattelites so it doesn't use the 3g or anything else "data plan".
Obviously, the use of gps sattelites is free but you need an offline map to be able to see where you are on Earth ^^.

Imho:
Navigon and iGo are currently the best navigation apps for android.
I chose iGo for better maps coverage where I live (central europe).
For offline google maps, search google or this forum for brut maps. Or something like that. I forgot the exact name, sorry. But once you try navigating with one of the above apps, you'll forget it too ;-)

Actually lots of reviews sites such as this one say that Sygic or Copilot is best application:

I have tried them all (but Copilot), and I still think what I have written above.
I don't understand how iGo gets a lower rating than, say, Sygic... ;o)

You can use Google map's brut mod for offline navigation.
You have to explicity enable maps caching after u install the app and then have to load map once. Next time it will be loaded from cache.
Google Turn by Turn navigation works fine but u need data connection to get directions for the first time.

Google maps does not use gps for the current position?
I have tried google map on some android phones, the map can not locate current position if gps is disabled, so I have always assumed that it use gps only for positioning.

You need both to be perfectly accurate. Your data connection can only be used to locate you within a few hundred meters. The GPS radio can be used to locate you within a FEW meters. That's why you need both enabled.

i always thought google maps was inaccurate because of the data connection...what if your somewhere with no signal then what?

If you're somewhere with no signal:
1) It won't be able to download the actual map data (the background/underneath imagery of roads, labels, etc.)
2) It'll take a few minutes to get a GPS fix.
