So, every device I've owned, I've had to use Messenger since they started it, as the messaging portion of the original app is disabled. There are workarounds for rooted phones to re-enable messaging without messenger.
I found a way to do it on my stock Sprint LS991 G4. I went into the play store and hit disable auto updates, went into app settings and uninstalled updates to both facebook and messenger, then I disabled messenger. Since then I've had full access to messaging in the native app, not a single popup asking for me to install messenger.
Don't know if anyone else is interested in this, but I figured I would post it, as a lot of people hate messenger.
Using m.facebook.com allows messaging without the app too.

Messenger not fast enough?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2934179
I would use TinFoil for Facebook. Not a battery hog too!
Even if I click on the link for Facebook Lite or search it directly on the play store it doesn't come up. I've been able to find a workaround and since it's free and legal I've put the download link below. Looks like they've just pushed it out to a few countries.
You can download the latest version of Facebook Lite here:
https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=Facebook+Lite&fdid=org.indywidualni.fblite
..Sent from an impeccable LG G4 on Verizon..
You can re-enable the facebook chat, no root required. Just did it on my brand new phone.

Hello
I want to synchronize my facebook contacts with my galaxy nexus contact app. So I go to "add an account" in the contact app, and "facebook", but nothing ... no window for add my acount appear, I return on the before window and I can't add my facebook account.
Have you an idea please ?
Thank's
Google disabled this option with a previous version of android. Other manufacturers such as HTC are allowed to add workarounds though which is why it will still works on their phones. There's several topics on this already. I agree though, it's a pain.

Ive synced my pics with "SyncMyPix" which works ok (not very HD)
Will Google fix this? I mean they still got it in the option menu, doesnt seem like they stoped working on it?!
Oh yeah since Gingerbread on nexus s I think. But it's crazy because Facebook is a choice in "add an account" so ....
So, no alternative ?
I just used FriendCaster instead to sync Facebook with my contacts. It doesn't show their status updates in the People app, but the profile pictures work fine.
Agree
Yeah, I was confused and thought my GN was playing up when I clicked on facebook and nothing happened!
Google trying to force thier crappy google+ circle thing...
Friendcaster worked ok for me as an alternative but unfortunatly it adds ALLLLLL my firends, most of which I never would want to call

It has nothing to do with Google. Facebook refuses to comply with Google's terms for portability of data. Google thinks you should be able to export your friends contact info. Facebook does not allow this.

Hilarious, given that FB doesn't seem to care about its users' privacy or handing out their info in anything else FB does.
But yeah, they're the problem. If you want to see it integrated, complain to Facebook, not Google.
So this issue is directly with the facebook .apk??? or is in the ROM we have in the galaxy Nexus??
I would think the ROM we have, as FaceBook isn't using the new API Google supplied from what I'm reading here.
So, when CM9 came out for our Nexus, with that ROM we should be fine? i think..
We need to find a solution for this, Friendcaster is crap and we should not need to use another app for this, it only consume more ram and battery...

I really don't understand this statement. It's not as if you are entitled for the data to sync. They haven't promised it to sync and it doesn't. Facebook data is Facebook data, if they don't want you to sync it with their app they don't have to.
It hasn't done it on android for a while, and it is hit and miss how well it does it on sense and other work arounds. Facebook can do what Facebook want to do at the end of the day.

Excuse me but, 1 week before i had a Motorola atrix until i lost it, and with the ROM it came i was able to sync all my contacts from Facebook, then i instaled CM7 and again i was able to sync everything from Facebook, this can be fixed to work in ICS or i hope will work in CM9.
Modaco ROM has fixed this, i will try it and i will let you know.
So finally I did it... I un-installed facebook app.
Of course I'm using mobile web page with app to notify me instantly for any notification or message. For the first time, I'm having over 400mb of free ram and other apps are not being forced to close.

Indeed, uninstalled the Facebook app a couple of weeks ago, never looked back. I don't need push notifications for facebook, I don't use facebook chat.
The website is faster than the app and doesn't run in background, doesn't eat my battery, ..
ew facebook. lol
Would love to do the same, but I like to share photos/links/etc to FB. Is there an app that lets you share to FB?
You can kinda of share photos to Facebook with tweetdeck or the better tweak deck from modaco goes though yfrog but it works

Try Friendcaster. There is a free & paid version in the market.
And facebook kept requesting GPS.
Uninstalled it, i don't check facebook much anyway.
Or just disable notifications and the "gps use" inside the app.
I also use it to upload photos, mostly when I am travelling, and without those settings, facebook app doesn't waste so much battery.
Seesmic ping. Twitter can be associated with FB too

FriendCaster is so much better than the official Facebook app in every possible way.
I bought it way back in the day when it was just called f+ and was just an addon to allow push messages before FB officially supported it.
I have just never had any big issues with the Facebook app. It works OK, and doesn't eat up resources any more than other apps. I run Facebook and Facebook Messenger all day. Even when I'm using it a ton and really spending time in the apps, it'll be at most 10% of my battery used. On normal days, its ~2% just like Plume and Google+.
Facebook works out fine for me, I didnt like Friendscaster

I unchecked the GPS use, but it still kept using the GPS at the news feed page.
But well, i'm not installing it anytime soon.
When I read the topic I thought you ended up getting a Nexus for free
I was close to installing the Facebook app once but ended up not and am glad I didnt. I just set up my account to send me a text message anytime I get a message/post and find this works best for me.
I use FB too often to uninstall, but it easily eats close to 30% of the battery... What GPS option are you referring to in the app?

That only works for messages and (maybe) posts. Damn app triggers GPS every time I open it.
I'm close to uninstalling too, as this app makes up the majority of my GPS use on a day to day basis.
They definitely need to add a universal toggle for it to the FB app.
I just uninstalled the FB app. Hopefully I can stay off of it.
My first step to cutting down on being over connected.
I just use Android Pro Widgets (APW) or something like that. They have a sweet themeable collection of scrollable Widgets like twitter, Facebook, email, and combinations of them (plus others). I use it for my Facebook that does a great job of working in itself but links directly to the website for more advanced stuff.
I don't use the notifications (god awful nonstop alerts). But its a great combo.
I have the twitter and Facebook using a whole page each my desktop... twitter on the first page, my main page on 2, and Facebook on 3.

I too use facebook a lot. Never had any issues 'that' much. But yes,the speed is awe-full when connected to a 2G/EDGE network. But never showed any problem with 3G/Wifi networks.
Whether it be this device, my nexus 4, stock roms, custom roms I cant seem to get notifications working for the facebook app. Anyone know any other app , or fixes for FB to work properly.
try Friendcaster (free on google play), it is a good alternative, but if you still want the original FB app notification to work,
1) find any Blackberry.
2) login to your FB account using Blackberry native FB app.
3) make sure you are logged in and you can see your FB stuff.
4) logout and you'll have the FB notification
i tried it and it worked, but i switched to Friendcaster because it is faster

My wife at work has some sort of Google account that allows messaging with google talk or talk.to any other messenger, even Google plus messanger doesnt work. Its very strange. Talk.to works, but its not my absolute favorite. Gtalk is antiquated, hence the reason for not using it. unfortunately she's not tech savvy to figure out what messenger she is actually using. From what it sounds like, its Google messenger and her Google messenger id even shows in g+ but she doesn't get any messages from me via g+. She's not a Google person...yet
imo messenger?

I would bet that its a "Google Apps for Business" account, the business can disable talking to outside their company as well. If it is not a google apps account it could be jabber. Google talk isn't antiquated, it's just aged, like txt messaging i use it frequently for communicatin.

Because it's completely different protocols.
Google is said to merge all it's IM protocols into one 'new' one integrated with everything
(G+ Messenger, Google Voice, Google Talk etc.)

Yes, as hearthc0re says, it's different protocols. GTalk I enjoy as it uses little to no battery life and you can maintain your conversation from gmail to your phone and keep a convo going like a threaded text message.
It'll be good to see Google get everything migrated and talking together in regards to g+ and g+ messenger.

Am about to pick up a used GNex and am wondering if the Facebook Home app is of any help towards getting contact pics & syncing on Nexus devices...never mind that it seems to be a crap launcher, etc., has anyone had a look at that possibility?
I don't have an Android phone for a few days to try this out, so if anyone is willing to give it a shot, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

No, you can use haxsync but is paid

Facebook home isn't available on the gnex.
I can sideload the apk (with a bit of tinkering) according to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232198&page=5
A shame it doesn't work for this purpose, though...I've read about haxsync and it's not a problem that it costs a buck, but it just looks unclean, unofficial, etc. I would like to sync between Facebook and Google via at least Facebook if Google is being a douche, not some 3rd party.
I guess the only way this would be resolved officially is if Facebook came out with a People app replacement...which it might yet do, but so far no go.
Thanks!
I have used haxsync for 2 yrs an recommend it, I only got it to sync Facebook contact photos to native phone app contacts originally.
Most likely I will also use either it or this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.contapps.android - looks very decent as a full People+Dialer replacement app

Google is not being a douche here, Android has an open API allowing any app developer to sync stuff with contacts. Facebook just never updated their horribly outdated app to take advantage of this.(the API was released 2 Years ago)
So no it would not require facebook to release a people app but simply to update their existing app.
This is exactly what the third party apps does, and they work fine BTW. Since they run entirely in the background it doesn't matter that they look unofficial, I never see the app itself. So there is no need to use a replacement for the people app.
Never did understand why more didn't follow HTC's contact sync set up. So simple, intuitive and seamless.
Hey, we see you have 4 John Smiths.. under FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, and your main contacts.. shall we merge? Voila, done. And you get to use their FB photo as the default.
Why they wouldn't make contact integration easier is beyond me..

It's simple, just because facebook is large doesn't mean they get preferential treatment(like on ios, where only twitter and facebook is integrated). On android any app can do this(facebook included), but it is required for the app itself to do the sync of the contacts.

But why not allow that as an option at the Android OS level to allow permission is what I don't get. The FB android app also hasn't synced my contacts in forever (to include photo).

Please read my previous post! It is allowed... Any developer can add sync options(this is exactly what the thirdparties like haxsync does). The reason your facebook app sync doesn't work is, that they hacked in a solution that worked on 2.2 and earlier versions of android, but as the official api was introduced, and facebook was breaking the rules, this exploit was removed, and facebook just hasn't updated to use the official api.
read about the official api here: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/contacts-provider.html
What HTC and others does is, that they either hack in the old exploit allowing the facebook app to sync again or they simply write their own app which uses the official api to sync fb contacts and pics.(this is identical to downloading an app like haxsync).
I ended up installing Contacts+ and am quite happy with it...
