1.40.401.8 overheating - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
Since I updated to 1.40.401.8, I flashed viper latest rom. The phone heats up on minimal usage, and oh the battery....ultra drain. I can barrly make it to the middle of the day.
Anyone having the same problem after the update?
I tried to flash it again, factory reset but no use. Any ideas to fix this or should I flash the old firmware?

Check over the apps you're restoring mate, keep the install clean, let it settle, set your CPU up right, install something to keep apps from starting up (auto starts) then see how the battery is, my guess is it'll be a lot better.
From that point just install the apps you need, followed by the ones you want.
Did you change up your firmware too? Obviously that should have been done but I thought I'd ask..
Hope this helps, seems obvious but its easily overlooked.

what do you mean by change up the firmware? if the firmware and the rom didnt match it will fall into a bootloop . I flashed the latest firmware and a new rom with the new base. I didn't install any different apps I only use several app which are whats app, appy geek, 9gag,tasker and twitter that's almost all the app and I ran more apps in the older firmware.
I have 30% now from only 6 hours and 30 min. there is a huge difference. I will try ARHD since its almost stock but I really love viper rom its full of customization
.
Anyway, thanks a lot m8, ill flash and new rom and ill update you guys.

I was under the impression that you could, some people had boot loops others didn't.
Leave all apps off, full wipe, then test.
If none of this works then I would try your luck in Viper thread.

Hey,
Its looks like an issue with viper rom, ARHD is way better, less heat and more battery for sure although I miss the customizations on the viper rom:crying:.
One thing I noticed, after flashing both roms I got the "android optimizing apps" for ARHD is was about 160 I think, while viper rom had like 240 -.-" There are a lot of things under that rom and i'm assuming they're causing the heat and battery drain.
ps. I always full wipe before flashing any rom
thanks

Just pick the ones you need mate, I know about viper, it is a little heavy but that's just to ensure that people get what they need.
As for a different base with a different firmware its definitely possible as I'm running the 1.40 ROM with the 1.32 firmware, no overheating and no problems.
Glad your back up and running. Try leedroid too, that's the ROM I'm currently running.

Power button reboots phone with Skyraider 3.3

Hey all
I've searched for an answer to my problem but have been able to find it. Anyway, I have tried about 8 different ROMS over the past month or so and Skyraider is easily my favorite. However, I had to remove due to the fact that whenever I would try to power down the device, it would reboot instead.
I've tried installing both manually and from ROM manager with the same outcome. I've cleared date & davlik and performed full wipes each time. My last hope was fixing permissions but that failed to correct the issue as well.
Again, I really enjoy using this ROM and do not relish the thought of not being able to use it. Does anyone have any thoughts on a possible fix?

You sure its Skyraider? That happened to me... Phone wouldnt shut off, if your in dark you can see the screen doesnt even shut down. With me though, it would shut off if plugged in.. Turned out the phone was damaged, a power surge damaged it. Got it replaced. If you flash another rom and it still wont shut down, then your gonna need a replacement.
Thanks for the response Mike. No, It does not happen with any other ROM I flash. Been bouncing between CM, Virtuous and uncommon for a week now and the power button works as it should.
I dunno, I realize I am a n00b with all of this but it simply doesnt make sense to me
Again, Thank you for the response
What radio are you using? A lot of people using 2.05 were having that issue and it went away when they upgraded to a 2.15 radio baseband.
No problem. But what you have going on is very odd, i wasnt aware that a ruu could do that. Try upgrading to the latest radio.
That's the baseband version correct? Sorry, I'm not too saavy with radios. Anyway..it says 2.15.00.07.28

Yes, that's the baseband version and you should be good to go with the one you are using. The only other things I can come up with is to ensure you are S-OFF and running HBOOT 0.79 or higher.
Please forgive my ignorance here. I am definately S-off but I am unsure how to see what HBOOT I am running. I go into recovery but I dont see any version.

Not a problem. This is how we learn. To find your HBOOT version power down then reboot into recovery. When you get to the white recovery screen look in the top left corner. The first line should state S-OFF and the second line should state your HBOOT version.
I was really hoping I would see it lower than 0.79 but it's 0.92. ah well..I suppose it's simply my phone doesn't play well with this ROM.
Thank you for the suggestions
I had this happen to me on Skyraider 3.3 after I tried to install a taskbar or battery icon from his older roms. Try just the stock rom for now until he updates.

Well that's unfortunate. I read a couple of posts in the Skyraider thread that sounded as though a couple of people had the "recommended" setup (like you) but also had the reboot problem. Those posts seemed to get no response so I guess there was no fix found. Most of the discussion on this problem starts around post #2432 in the Skyraider thread if you want to do some more digging but I couldn't really find anything more.
Some other factors to consider:
When you first flashed the ROM did you wipe all data? (factory reset, wipe data cache, wipe dalvik cache).
If you flashed a custom kernel, try going back to the stock kernel.
What version of ClockworkModRecovery are you running? They released a buggy update a couple of weeks ago and it was pulled shortly after release so if you have a version higher than 2.5.0.5 then you should revert to an older version of CWM.
You could flash the 2.15.00.09.01 radio baseband but I don't think it would make a difference with this problem. Also, if you screw up or accidentally flash the same radio over itself then you will have a brick so use extreme caution if you decide to go that route.
That pretty much exhausts my knowledge on the subject so if everything is as it should be then you could always try wiping everything and flashing the ROM again.

[Q] cyanogenmod 7 vs stock rom

i have never installed any custom rom yet.. i just saw cyanogenmod 7 was released and stable... heard it's the best rom out there... but is it worth installing it over htc desire's stock rom? i am starting to have some performance issues as i haev installed tons of apps on my desire.. will the performance be better on cyanogenmod 7?

yes, it is worth it but it does not have sense so if you are a fan of it you might want to flash leedroid
Define "performance".... apps opening faster? yes. Keep in mind, you will have a new launcher.
Battery life? Definately. I have about a 90% battery life improvement over my stock Desire ROM. Keep in mind, my phone is an east european model, compared to branded phones in the US, which means I didn't get bloatware installed.
Also, when you upgrade to CyanogenMod7, you can install setcpu, and overclock your processor. In addition, I run profiles to throttle back the processor speed if the battery reaches a certain percentage.
I can run, normal usage (without films) at least 2 days without recharge.
I run their RC3, just can't seem to think why I should update to their "stable" version. The only noticable thing I see, is that screen brightness doesn't seem to hold (get brighter). But a tiny annoyance.
Also, I would suggest updating the normal way to 2.29 first. I'm not an android programmer by any means, but have heard it also flashes the radio version, which can be important when flashing custom ROMs.
CyanogenMod has put tons of work into their ROM. Probably more than anybody out there. You won't be dissappointed.
There are a couple of other good ROMs out there as well. Oxygen, Gingervillian, and Muiu (spelling). But I only read about them.
If you have any problems, please ask BEFORE you brick your phone.

Yeah, forgot about sense, but really, I don't see much of a difference between running stock HTC and CyanogenMod.
Or maybe I am ignorant (staring at too many posts for too many days)
Sense has left me......
i am tempted for the battery life... maybe i will flash it tomorrow... it will be my first flash so... thinking well before doing it.. lol ... how's phone quality? are stuff like camera (recording and photo) improved?

They added some options for video, mostly effects. I like the B/W for video. Camera quality is good. No difference from stock as far as I can see.
A lot more control as far as how your phone behaves (animations, etc). In fact, more options than I need.
You will miss some of the stock widgets though. And will have to get from the market.
Currently, I'm in the process of extracting the APK's from HTC's zip (between extreme beer sessions), and will see if they work correctly. They had a good Office app. and the weather widget.
If you do flash, you will need to also get the flash file for google apps and flash both at the same time. Then, afterwords, you can go to the market again, and get what you need.
Ohhhhh.... root your phone first.
already rooted my phone.. download rom manager from market.. probably will be using it to install cm7

I prefer to install it the old fashioned way, rather than Rom Manager. Although it's nice to flash the clockwork recovery.
I copy it to the root, goto hboot, recovery, wipe all caches, then run both updates. Cyan and googleapps
Remember, to a recovery backup on your phone, BEFORE flashing any new ROM.
They have TONS of instructions here.
Good luck.
i am going to follow this guide
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide
is it for cyanogenmod 6 or is it also valid for cm7?
installed cm7 finally.. got some issues but finally it's fine... only thing i couldn't install yet is app2sd... ext formatting done through rom manager doesn't seem to work... and i missed installation of the gmail app (i installed google addons for cm7) and when i started the phone, it asked whether to download and install gmail app.. i skipped thinking i would be able to install it later or recover it from my titanium backup...
i could not install it later.... and i messed up with my backup (i forgot to copy the license file...darn... i only copied the titanium backup folder thinking everything was there)..
first impressions.. i miss htc sense... not a big fan of adw launcher and most widgets not as good as htc sense ones... battery does not seem to be better.. is actually a buit worse than the stock rom (which was good imo)... maybe i need to re-calibrate my battery?
haven't installed a lot of apps yet so can't evaluate performance for now (performance was good on stock rom until i installed lots of apps and moved them to sd)... cm7 is more ugly than stock rom imo. will continue to use it and get more used to it... but overall.. i am missing stock rom... ( a lot of features seem missing or need fixing in cm7)

Phone stuck on app optimization

Hi guys, i swear i searched! for like days! i still haven't found out how to solve this issue. problem started when i tried hellybean a few weeks back, and then i heard someone on the thread said to try and use the latest beta uber kernel at the time, and i did. What end up happening was that my hardware keys are dead, the lights still works but very dim, i think this is because of the swipe to wake thing where it leaves your hardware keys on 24/7 as long as the phone is on, which is not that bad because i'm now used to using the nav bar. but the real problem is that now every time I install a rom that is not JB 4.1 (haven't tried 4.2 though) i.e. 4.3, 4.3.1, it gets stuck at the app optimization screen, it would go about half way through optimizing the apps, and then just reboots itself, and it'll do that over and over, like boot loop but it can actually go into the rom. So i think this is not as bad as a situation as soft bricking or hard brick, but i just really don't know what the heck is going on to even try and fix it. I've tried odin, thinking that there may be something wrong in the boot file, nada, factory reset, nada, the only thing that worked was installing the 4.1 roms, i think it is because the 4.1 roms don't require app optimization.
If anything maybe anyone out there can help me find a way to disable app optimization? maybe that'll let me get into the rom.
btw, i dont really mind using 4.1, but i really want to try the jedi rom, but having my hardware buttons dead and jedi rom being TW and it doesn't seem to have a nav bar make it impossible for me to use the rom, so i've only been able to use cyanogen 4.1, which are great but they are pretty outdated, so if there are anyway to fix that, lmk too.
Anyways, any help would be appreciated thanks a ton guys! sry for essay!
have you used the infamous cache wipe? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235141 try this and it should fix your issues its because your going from AOSP/AOKP to TW they dont like each other lol follow those instructions and you should be good. also what recovery are you using to flash these?

Lol actually the problem started when I was on 4.3, and then upgraded to 4.3.1 helly bean, in which i tried to use the beta uber kernel, that was when the problem started. So the only roms that allows me to get pass the optimization screen were the 4.1.2 roms, which were TW, pananroid, like i tried a bunch, like super old ones, they all worked, just that when i try to get any rom higher than 4.1.2, it keep going back to that. And yeah when i tried to upgrade from jedi to aosp, to tried using infamous cache and it didnt work :/ because i've heard that's what would fix it... and lastly, Im using twrp 6.1 i think, not the latest one.
Thanks alot for the reply!
PS. I see you running slimbean 4.2.2, how is it? any probs? maybe i can try a 4.2.2 if this doesn't work out, i havn't been able to get any 4.2.2 roms cause the links are all dead, so idk if i'll have problems with 4.2.2. if there's anyway you can link it for me that'll be great! thanks!
PSS: also i've tried odin, but idk if that actually wipes everything, i'm having a feeling that it might be a script problem or something because it goes into the rom once, but it just refused to work and after like 10 seconds it reboots.
quick question are you trying to restore 4.1/4.2 apps on your 4.3 ? apps dont play nice like that sometimes .. also your not restoring any system apps are you? Personally i love all the ROMs/Mods the devs put out for us but im one who likes it really stable with very few bugs so i like to stick with stable ROM's so thats why im still on 4.2.2 its nearly perfect no issues here brother . When you flash the rom what are your actual steps in detail please from the time you boot into recovery until you finish so i can get a better idea here

Ey thanks for the reply, ok so first, I did not try to restore any apps or system apps, I even odin so everything were wiped cleaned. So really dont know whats going on. After I updated to a newer hellybean, not newest by now, and a beta uber kernel, this happens. I see two other people having the same problem too. Also I tried to use 4.2.2 roms, did not work
Anyways any insight would be apreciated!
Thanks!
One more thing, I tried twrp 2.6.1.0 to flash as reccomended by all devs and still no results. :/
Damn sorry brother that's pretty frustrating try dirty flashing helly bean and just wipe dalvik and cache and see if using the stock kernel helps first then see what happens :banghead:

[Q] What's up with this phone?!

Hi guys. I recently purchased this phone from t mobile and so far it has been terrible. I cannot return it because I traveled to a different country and there is no T-Mobile here, so I am stuck.
Some issues I have are:
- extreme over heating while simply using the phone to browse the internet.
- battery draining extremely fast, lasting 4 hours Max (basic usage)
I am using the Android revolution rom on 5.1 lollipop and I thought it was supposed too fix these issues. Can someone please tell me how to fix these issues? I feel ripped off and wish I bought an s6 instead
I would say you have a faulty device... ?
Did you flash the new firmware aswell? Not just the rom?

I wasn't aware that you had to install the firmware as well. where can I get it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-red-t3097678
latest firmware. Should help fix issues. If not, it's possible it is device related.
Do you use greenify or any other similar app to hibernate apps when the screen is off? Do you have a lot of apps that sync automatically throughout the day? Have you removed bloatware and other apps that run in the background that you dont use by using titanium backup or romtoolbox?
Simple things like resolving any issues with the above mentioned items can help prolong battery life by a fair bit. Kernel tweaks also help to reduce overheating / cpu usage if you dont require you're phone to run at top capacity.
with overheating you need to keep in mind this is an all metal casing on the phone ... this means it will naturally absorb a lot of heat which isnt always a bad thing as it takes some of the strain away from the phones core. Obviously if its so warm it's hot to the touch then thats definately not good. But doing a full wipe / reset / re-flash etc is worth doing to get you back to basics and then if the issue remains, and you have seen to the above tweaks like using greenify / uninstalling apps you dont need / changing apps sync frequency etc, then it is probably hardward related.

I installed the android revolution rom which has no bloatware, I only have a few apps like facebook, snapchat, and twitter. The rest are never open. I have google syncing automatically. I am also currently in the process of installing the elitekernal that should help the CPU not overheat. Which kernal do you recommend? Can I use multiple kernals at one time? And yes, it eventually reaches the point where its not supposed to be that hot. I can understand if it get warm, but it really shouldn't get to the point where its hot to the touch. I really hope its not a hardware issue because then I'd have to be stuck with it.

as far as i know its a one kernel at a time kinda show.
I have only ever used the kernel that comes with the rom so far so cant recommend any others im afraid.
If after installing a different kernel you have the same issue and you have a set up like you've mentioned, it does sound like a hardware problem. With your setup it should very rarely get that hot unless you do a lot of flashing in a short space of time. My phone only ever gets hot to a point that i notice when i flash and set up a new rom, but it soon returns to normal.
good luck.

While you were still on stock, did you update the phone through Software Updates? You're likely on the originally released version of the firmware, which is probably 90% of your problems. Mismatched firmware/ROM isn't helping either.
Either return the device to stock to be able to take the OTA update, or S-Off ($25 through sunshine) and flash the latest developer edition firmware (2.8.617.4).

Bro. you really got to do some reading before you just start flashing stuff. Elite is NOT compatible with 5.1 roms.
if you are on 5.1, you HAVE to use the stock kernel . There are NO custom kernels for 5.1 yet.
Restore the boot.img from the ARHD rom. Either by restoring from the backup you made before you flashed the elite kernel, by dirty flashing ARHD, or by extracting boot.img from the ARHD zip and flashing it with fastboot.

I did not update the phones firmware. I was doing this whole thing in the first place because I thought updating to 5.1 android would update my firmware lol.
Right now I am trying to adb sideload the android revolution ROM but the phone says "Starting adb sideload feature" and gets stuck there. I have the correct drivers. Fastboot works fine, but I can only flash stock roms with fastboot. Do you have any link for the stock T-Mobile rom?

I did not update the phones firmware. I was doing this whole thing in the first place because I thought updating to 5.1 android would update my firmware lol.

This will wipe your internal storage, so back it up first, but it's going to be the easiest way to get out of the mess you've gotten yourself in.

FYI-You need to have HTC Sync Manager installed on your computer for the RUU to run (or at least you USED to). If you get error 155 it's likely because it's not installed.
I fixed it by putting android revolution rom on my sd card then flashing it via twrp.
Now I have a simple question:
Does Lolipop 5.1 include all those fixes that HTC introduced? Or do I need to wait for the firmware for that? I am talking about the fixes like camera, overheating, battery, etc.

Firmware fixes those issues, not the rom...or at least you need the firmware for any of the fixes to actually work And using the latest ARHD with 1.32 firmware is likely making some of your issues worse.
There should be one firmware update for T-Mobile right now. But like I said, you'll have to return to stock system image to get the update. Either that or S-Off your phone which will make it possible to update to the 2.8 developer edition firmware which ARHD would run awesome on. The only downside to s-off and using developers firmware is if you use t-mobile wifi calling. For that to work, I think you need official t-mobile firmware.

if you are on 5.1, you HAVE to use the stock rom . There are NO custom roms for 5.1 yet.

Not to confuse the OP, but @jollywhitefoot what do you mean there are no custom roms for 5.1? Did you mean kernal? Another question, Is the new T-mobile update out already? I heard it comes out on the 17th.

Sorry. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I meant to write kernel instead of rom. There are no custom KERNELS for 5.1 roms yet.
I've fixed my original post to avoid future confusion...but hopefully we'll see a custom kernel for this device in a couple of weeks.
You probably know more about T-Mobile update schedule than I do. I'm on AT&T and they're the worst about pushing updates, so I don't even bother keeping up with them.
We probably won't have any custom kernels for a few more weeks. Nothing can happen until HTC releases source, which has been coming a couple of weeks to a month after the OTAs.

Help!! Phone constantly freezing!!

Hello,
Got an S9 wich has been smoothly running SoLdierR ROM for a couple of weeks. Until two days ago, when my phone decided otherwise. If I restart the phone, the freezing stops for a bit and isn´t noticeable until I start opening apps and that´s when it starts getting really annoying. After that the freezing starts occuring in intervals every 10sec for 3-4 sec. This is making me miss messages/voice calls if these occur during freezing intervals. If I remembers correctly, this started right after I cleared phone memory a couple of days ago. Is there any way to resolve this without me having to backup data and restoring phone?
What I've tried doing so far:
Restarts, shutting down phone for longer periods of time, booting in safe mode (still freezing), booting in recovery mode and deleteing cache/dalvik, deleting apps recently installed, inactivating google apps (google, google play, google services) and deleting cache then unstalling update and then reactivating them, removed root.

when you installed your custom ROM, did you delete the folder on internal storage named "android"?

I believe I did, used TWRP and wiped everything before installing my custom ROM. I'am starting to think about doing a clean install all over again however, that won't mean that this issue won't come back later?

considering there arent that many variables that go into ROM installation, its likely just some one-off situation. If it wasnt, there would be a ton of folks reporting the same issue. Sometimes dropping fat man or little boy and starting over is all thats left. Been there so many times with the S3 and S5, i cant even begin to tell you.

Yepp! I doing a clean install atm. Got another question wich is a bit off-topic. I'am using soliders latest ROM, I noticed he did release a new firmware update. Is it enough flashing the ROM or do I have to flash firmware by itself later? Or do I simply do nothing after flashing the ROM? Sorry if I'am asking obvious question but this a all still new to me.

no worries mate, we all try to take a look at members post count before casting judgement on them for the question they asked. For that matter, we try to avoid casting judgement period, and im saying that as a member, not a moderator.
im not directly familiar with the soldier run of ROMs, but if the firmware version has changed, it is wise to install the full firmware.
Also, i wouldnt consider what you asked to be off topic at all.

Good to know
I've run into a problem after flashing the custom ROM. I'am stuck on the Samsung logo, what should I do? Would appreciate a step by step explanation.

to be perfectly honest, if youve done all the things in the OP and its still doing that, its time to drop fat man or little boy and start from stock tar.md5. Boot to DL mode and flash the stock firmware. Obviously something is awry and the usual tricks didnt help so far. Mushroom cloud time
