Proper DPI settings - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Have been having a play about with my DPI settings, I understand now that there by doing this it can have an adverse effect on the battery life of the phone, after having a tinker with different settings I've come to the conclusion that certain settings simply don't scale right.
The ones that I've found are OK but are just a bit out. 440 is what it is now, but I find the icons and widgets, even the text is too large..
I did have it set to 400, which I preferred but a portion of the password / pin was missing, if you go any lower than that you risk cutting off the bottom of the screen on the lock screen at least.
Please could anyone who's changed their DPI post their results here and any anomalies that might occur if else follows suit.
To alter the DPI I've been using textdroider_dpi from the play store.

If this happens go to recovery, click advanced, file manager, then go to data / system i think and delete password / pattern, whichever one it is.
reboot and you'll be able to log in without the password.

400 with the pin works, i've not tried with the pattern myself. 440 obviously works fine.

I gone thru the same issue. I think 400 cut me out of the numpad "OK", and i actually had to restore the sys image. (Didnt know about the recovery method).
Does anyone know of something that can set a per-app DPI? Can i control the DPI of the lockscreen, dialer etc separately?

Mate you don't need to reflash just open twrp, go to file manager, open data / system then delete passcode or passphrase it'll remove your code.

Yeah, but i forgot i could do that at the time. But is there any app that would work to set a different DPI for the lock screen, so I that im not limited to go anything below 400?

Not as far as I'm aware, I've been using knock lock.. It's really good, got pro version so no ads, no wake locks.

[MOD][ROOT] Change default homescreen - TouchWiz 4.0

Hello,
There's a simple way for those who want to change default homescreen.
You have to be rooted.
So, you first have to download a file explorer that supports root, for example Root Explorer(paid, I use this one).
Then, go to /system and open default.prop with text editor.
Now, add this line:
Code:
ro.csc.homescreen.defaultscreen=3
Where 3 is the number of the default screen you want - 1. So default screen 4 => 3.
Now, just reboot and it should work. If you have any problem/question, feel free to ask.
At first: Sounds great! Thanks!
But:
Afaik (only from some (elder?) videos) it's possible to add and delete home screens. Could you tell me or try what happens if you set this var to e.g. 5 (=> default home screen is 4) but you only have 3 home screens at all? The same has to be considered if you accidentally delete the last home screen and this one is/has been set to default.
Worked perfectly! Thanks for the tweak was missing this feature from my past android phones.

Could it be made into a simple apk file?
Even easier - no root required
Sorry to steal your thunder -
Pinch zoom (helicopter mode) longpress & drag will do it.

Ian, the point of this mod is so that when you hit your home button, while in your homescreens, it will revert to the 4th screen. Normally when you are in your homescreens and then hit the home button again, it'll revert you to the first screen as default. This is the case even if you change the order of your homescreens using pinch to zoom.
Cool I hoped this was coming. Cant stand being on 1 as the home screen.
Thanks EleCtrOx666!
Works great.
If it is this easy to make the change I don't understand why Samsung didn't include it as an option in one of the configuration menus.

I'll see what I can do.
It worked great with root explorer, but not so much with ES File Explorer -- it does have a "root" mode, but it asks you whether you are using the CyanogenMod or the HiAPK rom.
For n00bs, like myself, it's also worth pointing out that you won't be able to edit the build.prop unless you click on the "mount rw" (read/write) button up at the top first. Afterwards, you'll probably want to click the "mount ro" (read only) at the top again.
Thanks a lot.

This works beautifully and something I've been pining for after moving from sense. Thanks a lot
I'm not an active Android dev. But isn't there a var you can call and just divide by 2?
Like:
ro.csc.homescreen.defaultscreen = ro.csc.homescreen.screencount/2;
Something like that? Excuse me if this obviously doesn't work, it was just a thought, as it would make it easier and won't require users to change that value whenever they change the amount of homescreens.
How did you find this setting? I'm interested if there are more useful settings like that.
hy EleCtrOx666
i'm a beginner in this so pls have a little patience with me.
I got a SGS2 and i'm interested to know if there's anyway to root the phone without flashing a custom kernel taking in account that u have this "nice" counter on the phone.
Very nice explained how to modif home-screen number.
is it here any way to get temp root?
hi sorry to be a pain, but i would love to be change my default home screen button, I followed the guide, and rooted my phone successfully (i think) and once superuser was installed I went and found the defualtprop file and edited it as guided by adding that line, i clicked save & exit (at which point it tells me it made a backup of the original file) then after I restart the phone it just goes back to normal, like I never touched the file...
anyone know where i'm going wrong?
Thanks, reminds me of my HTC Desire now with homescreen centred

This Guide explains how to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334
This doesn't work for me. I can't add that line. I've tried two different text editors and two root explorers (one with an editor built in) and they both say the file can't be saved. No other programs open. I restarted the phone and tried again.
Anybody else have this problem?
Thanks for the help via PM.
In case anyone else had my problem, it was solved by using Root Explorer. Click "Mount R/W", do the edit, save, reboot.
Works perfectly.

Ofcouse you need root . Download Romtoolbox from play store go to build.prop /Ro.sf.lcd.density/ set property value to 240/ reboot ( but you will have little issue like when receive call, the answer & end button will misalign ,still working normal though)

Have you adjusted Menu > Settings > Accessibility > Font Size?
You can change that to "Tiny." Not sure if that's what you are looking for though?
The font sizes in Accessibility dont realy change them that much. Tiny is not that small or I just have good vision.... Custom launchers can help w/ the icon sizes.
I dont like how much room the toggles and screen brightness slider take up in the notification window. In portrait mode they take up like half the screen.

Sorry , for delay feedback been busy with real life job. Here is the 240 dpi mod link which compiable with note2 and I alway use Apex launcher Pro as my default launcher. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873026 ( you must set LCD Density at 240 dpi when you use those Mod )
I've noticed in the past that sometimes a DPI of 241 works better than 240. Might be worth trying if you run into any other issues with alignment etc.

Lockscreen Off-center

Hi all. I'm currently running Xnote with my screen dpi set to 430. Mostly everything thing looks correct and proportional except the lockscreen when I set it to either PIN or Pattern. Does anyone know of a quick fix like maybe Build Prop Editor or something to get this centered? TIA

Playstore has lockscreens that arent effected by the DPI change. Just make sure to turn off the stock lock screen (none) where applicable.

Thanks, but I prefer not to add third party apps unnecessarily that run in the background so I'll just deal with this issue until I switch over to Liquid.

How to change screen DPI on T3

To decrease T3's screen dpi.... Just head over to build.props can b found in root system.... Edit the build.props by adding a line at the end, type "ro.sf.lcd_density=280"
320 is the stock value
I found 280 is looking best...
Try..
Make sure to make a backup of ur build.props first

If you want to use it on single apps you can do it (root required) by installing xposed framework and downloading the module xposed app settings.

How to change your DPI settings to take advantage of the big screen

1. Settings.
2. System
3. About
4. Tap Build Number 10 times, until you are a developer.
5. System - Developer options
6. Drawing - Smallest Width #.
There are several guides on which DPI settings to use if you search, but I prefer around 600-640 to take advantage of the big screen. I hope this guide is helpful for some of you who weren't aware of this option. :highfive:

Ok but the notification tray and toggles are so big because seems to be unnafected by DPI change.

I set my on 485 dpi Honor Note 10 value. Yeah to bad that notification tray and toggles are still big and don't change. It also resets after reboot.
Doesn't this also mess up the app icons?

What DPI do you like? Lower?
I noticed today that I hadn't set the sizes in Display Settings first, to a smaller font, and then in developer options the DPI. The smaller font made a big difference, but is easy to overlook. I'm at 600 now, and everything works and looks fine. :cyclops:

It will reset every time you reboot the device. Also when you change the display settings it may revert back to normal.

This is where Huawei neuteres Android. Change the smallest width setting and it is reset every time you restart the phone. The Android System and some of the SystemUI elements don't even change when setting a higher number. Once you're rooted you're better off editing the build.prop in vendor and adding the qemu.sf.lcd_density=xxx line in to get everything to change like it's supposed to. Be careful not to go too low on the density or else EMUI glitches out to the point where your lockscreen will no longer function. It's one of the things about EMUI that really irks me and instead of Huawei fixing the issue they just seem to ignore it. That and not being able to move the wifi and data icons to the right where they should be.
We need root soon. Changing the width in developers options messes with some apps. Also, the navigation bar at the bottom doesn't change which blocks the exit button in my trading app. Quite annoying.
