Correct files for rooting 5.1.1 ? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Nexus 7 2013 with 5.1.1 installed.
I've been reading about how to root it. Most of the instructions I've found are for Android 5.0. Since the rooting instructions involve flashing "patched kernels" for boot.img
( http://www.droidviews.com/root-nexus-5-nexus-7-2013-android-5-0-lollipop/) I am afraid to brick my nexus 7 by flashing the wrong boot.img.
Where do I find the correct files to root 5.1.1?
Is it the same boot.img as the one used to root 5.0?
Thanks.

Ok. Because nobody replied to my several requests for help, here's some useful information for others in my situation.
http://dottech.org/180387/how-to-root-nexus-7-2013-on-android-5-1-1-lollipop-lmy47v-guide/
http://wccftech.com/root-nexus-7-2013-lmy47v-android-5-1-1-and-install-cwm-recovery/
I know how scared of bricking my device I was and I know I'm not alone, so I hope this will help others avoid days of searching. Please note that the instructions are specific to the Android version and device.
**These are directions to install cmw recovery. I prefer twrp recovery. So if someone finds similar instructions for the nexus 7 2013 specifically for android 5.1.1 please let me know. I have not yet found it. Thanks.
I still have to do the same with my nexus 5, Android 5.1.1 ..... As some of us know, what is a no brainer to the experts is not so for many of us. So these helpful websites are very helpful - - once we find them

Did you look at Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389107
I used this to root my tablet when I got it a year and a half ago, and it was so easy! You can install TWRP right from the program. You can also use it with the nexus 5.

Thanks for replying.
I know about Wug tool. I've used it and ran into trouble. I now prefer using adb and fastboot and know exactly what I'm doing.

A few questions for a beginner

Hi. I hope you are all doing well.
I`m a new Galaxy Nexus user coming from a Galaxy S II.
It's the GSM version.
As far as see, there are major differences in rooting and installing CWM between Nexus and Galaxy S II. And it seems like that I need to unlock the bootloader first.
So can someone please tell me what requirements I need to be able to install a custom GSM ROM like the Android Revolution HD.
Thanks. Much appreciated and sorry for my bad English.
You could try searching the forums. There is some pretty good information on here in the stickies. Alternatively, there is a site called theunlockr.com where they have a guide for quickly rooting and installing CWM for the Galaxy Nexus.
Check it out.
Use my guide buddy.
Link in my sig.
You'll be up and running in an hour.
All you'll need are fastboot and perhaps ADB (along with the .imgs and .zips of course). And that's just the manual way. Mskip has created a literal one click/press solution to unlock, flash and root phones, linked here. It can install all necessary drivers as well so there isn't any need to dig around for drivers and files.
<_<
I don't understand the instantaneous pushing of these one-click-do-it-all tools to new users.
What if they need to flash stock in an emergency can't boot and recovery is borked situation?
Or maybe even need to push a .zip to their sd card...but don't have ADB set up...and can't figure it out.
Use.
My.
Guide.
You'll thank yourself later.
Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

This. Adb push/pull and fastboot are probably the most useful commands you will ever learn. Get something wrong and you will regret not knowing them someday

GSM Telstra rom (Yakjudv) how to upgrade to 4.0.4 or JB?

Hi everyone,
I must apologise for adding to the large number of threads on subjects such as this, but having trawled through forums (Both here and elsewhere), I'm struggling a bit to know which guide to use.
I'm currently using a Galaxy Nexus which is running stock Android 4.0.1 yakjudv (Telstra GSM). I'm wanting to change my phone to a stock Google rom, as I currently don't get any OTA updates. I would be happy with 4.0.4, or JB. The problem I have is, having looked through all the guides, I don't know exactly what I need to do to achieve what I'm looking for. I'm trying to do the minimum to get the result, and don't need to remain rooted/unlocked after I upgrade.
As I'm quite afraid of doing something wrong, I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of the best guide to use. I've looked at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614827
and
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/429778/how_update_your_galaxy_nexus_jelly_bean/
and have downloaded the rom from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images (Yakju)
I would appreciate any guidance.
Thank you so much, and once again my apologies for posting yet another question. I do promise that I have tried to find the information on my own for a number of hours. I may simply be inept at searching!
Download the galaxy nexus toolkit then backup your data then install the drivers then download the factory image 4.0.4 then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to unlock the bootloader then put the galaxy nexus image file in c:\galaxynexustoolkit\google image goes here then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to install the 4.0.4 galaxy nexus image the use the galaxy nexus toolkit to root the device and to keep root use OTA root keeper from google play store then install ota jelly bean update there you go that how you install the google image on your telstra galaxy nexus and I use a galaxy nexus on Telstra

No, don't use a toolkit.
OP, follow this guide. Extremely easy and it doesn't matter what your current build is, you'll be flashing to 4.0.4 "takju" and quickly receive the 4.1.1. OTA update. You'll be stock and update by Google from here on out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895

Thank you both for the replies. If I follow the guide to flash to 4.0.4 "Takju", will this cause any difficulties in using the phone here in Australia? (I read something about not being able to use HD audio or something like that on another forum and just want to be sue that the upgrade will work on my phone here in Aus!)

But then when something goes wrong (it usually does with new users and toolkits), you have absolutely no idea what's happened and no way to fix it. Just spend the few minutes to learn a manual guide and understand what you're doing. You'll thank yourself when you can diagnose problems.

It'll work just fine. I've not heard anything specific about Australian users having issues being on stock Google firmware (no reason why they would). The only issue I could see is the radio not providing the best results. You can always flash back to an AUS-specific radio, although this then prevents you from auto-installing OTA's, which was your goal in the first place...

Thanks again!
I've just tried following the guide and was going to backup my phone first, but CWM tells me 'Can't mount backup path". Does this mean there is something wrong that I should know about before I try the full process?
Sorry to double post - I thought I should just check - Last night I installed drivers using Wug's toolkit, and when I fastboot devices, I get a serial number. It also let me view the device both in normal and recovery mode.
I assumed that meant that I didn't need to reinstall the drivers. Is that correct?
Thanks so much!

[Q] Unroot Nexus 7 2013?

I'm one of the unlucky ones that needs to get my new toy exchanged as it seems to have a problem with GPS. I'm not convinced it's hardware related but the tech at Google is.
With that said I've been looking for a way to unroot and relock my Nexus 7 2013 version.
I've obviously found a lot of info on how to do this with the first gen Nexus. Most are done by toolkit.
These toolkits can download the image file that you need to restore, or use one you already have. From what I know Google has not released the official image for download, but I do have the 800+ MB system img that can be found on these forums.
Are there any toolkits that support the Nexus 7 2013? I believe N-Cry does but not sure it can do what I need.
To get to where I'm at today I followed the steps to unlock and root via adb(?) that were posted shortly after the release of the Nexus 7 2013.
Sadly I don't know how to reverse the steps to undo it.
Anyone have info on how I can do this?
Thank you

I believe you can fully unroot it through the menu in the SuperSU. Just do that and perform factory reset afterwards.
Did that work?
Thanks for the reply.
Can't say if using unroot in SU will work. I was able to unlock it and reset it and I hope that's enough. I'm returning it to Best Buy, can't imagine they'll do much looking if any.

Help please. NEW to 2013 N7

Hello all. I am new to the N7. I look forward to trying out some of the awesome development in this forum. Before I begin I need to ask some things. I have spent ALL DAY today reading forums and researching this device b4 I begin. But to be honest, I can not spend days reading every post out there and still be a dad here. So I am trying to stream line this some. I am not a newbie in rooting / roming. Sorry if I have not seen a topic like this b4 posting. There are just so many in this forum now to go through. I will delete this one once helped if nessary. Also THANK YOU VERY MUCH in advance for any help I get here.
1. I have a Verizon note 2, Verizon PERMANENTLY locked the bootloaders on their phones so development has stoped/ slowed drastically. I know the N7 has a locked bootloader that can be unlocked. Is this still true on a stock 5.1.1 lollipop version? or Is there a step to reflash to an older rom I should do first?
2. I see the wugs toolkit out there and a nexus toolkit. Is there any reason to use one over the other? Are either of these working on my STOCK 5.1.1 rom still?
3. Can someone please run down the steps to achieve UNLOCK, ROOT, AND CUSTOM RECOVERY? I seen how wugs does all that in it's program. So if that is the way than a good link to use Please.
Once again. Thanks in advance for your help here. Please also feel free to add in here anything I need to be aware of b4 I begin making my N7 a beast of a tablet. I can not wait to try out some of the awesome roms and mods I have seen so far.

To root or not to root? That is the question.
1. It's unlockable
2. No need for a toolkit just use fastboot, unless you don't want to know what you're doing. It's in the platform-tools folder of the android sdk. There are many guides on xda about how to use it. Don't forget to install googles usb driver.
3. Very easy. Boot the tablet to the bootloader by holding volume down and power while turned off.
Plug into the computer and open a command prompt in whatever folder you have fastboot and type fastboot oem unlock and hit enter. Follow the steps on the tablet.
For recovery download the recovery .img you want and put it in the fastboot folder. Type fastboot flash recovery whatevername.img
To root just download the su zip from here and flash it through recovery.
You need to be careful you don't have a new Nexus 7 version which doesn't allow the mounting of any of the partitions in a custom recovery. I have one of these new Nexus 7s and no matter what I do I can't get the recovery to work, there's a thread about it.

Thanks for the two answers so far!

Here's the thread on the issue. I bought my N7 yesterday and I'm affected by this. I can't resolve it and am stuck on stock at the moment which is annoying as I bought it to mess about with Roms and kernels. I'm not sure how you identify which tablets are affected but it seems the later manufactured ones are.

Lineage install on Axon 7 | Using Mac?

Hey people,
I have had a look through the forums for an answer to my question as to not duplicate a similar post however I could not find anything.
Apologies if my investigation was not thorough of this has been covered.
Essentially I want to install Lineage on my Axon 7 however I'm a Mac user. When I was a One Plus user there was an excellent tool kit that someone devised.
Is there anything like this for Lineage currently?
Im sick of My favor and Cyanogenmod.
Thanks for taking time to read this post.

1. LineageOS actually IS Cyanogenmod.
2. Install ROM via custom Recovery (TWRP) directly from device, just put ROM on sdcard and load from there while in TWRP.
3. Screw AAPL and iCrap, not needed for this Android. [emoji23]

adb and fastboot are avaialable for Mac, as part of the Android SDK, just as they are available in Windows and Linux.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot your-twrp-image.img
adb sideload whatever.zip
Cheers people. Appreciate your time and help. After doing a bit more reading it looks as though there are a few routes to go for the Axon 7 and a few things to beware of.
Last time i used a one plus toolkit which made this process easy to conduct. As a relative novice I think I may have to wait and see if there will be a mac os tool kit available at some point.
I found some guides that suggest the process is as simple as this.. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.droidviews.com/install-lineage-os-14-1-on-zte-axon-7/amp/
And some that are way above my head, modem installs etc.
