I just cracked my second Nexus 7 2013. Both occasions the tablet was not dropped in any way and minor pressure put a few hairline cracks in the display, rendering it useless because the digitizer is integrated into the glass. Why do they crack SO easily? Has anyone else experienced this? Its very frustrating. I am considering fixing it myself, but have heard of the new display cracking on install. I don't think I'll buy another one after this durability issue and touchscreen issues on both I've owned. Too much trouble than what they're worth. Any other 7 inch tablets in the sub $300 range that offer similar if not better performance? No, the Nexus 9 is too big for my taste lol. Thanks

Funny. I'm wondering if the glass is generally weak on these tablets or if I've just had bad luck. Its literally a few hairline cracks across the display, nothing major. I pulled it out of the tablet bag I have for it and it was cracked.
It's not inherent to the tablet. I'm using my daughter's hand-me-down tablet (funny how that works...) and she abused the hell out of it. It did have a Moko case to protect it, but she pounded on it pretty hard when she got mad at apps - enough that I fussed at her and threatened to take it away.
I have it now and there isn't a scratch or crack anywhere on it. In fact, it's been a pretty awesome tablet for the money.

They are not generally that fragile, but may crack for a number of known and unknown reasons. For instance, one recounted that he dropped it for 3 inches onto a bed and got it; whereas I myself have slipped it from the trunk of a car to the asphalt with the glass landing on the hard surface and nothing happened. But what you can do is buy another assembly, and a tempered glass cover for another 10 bucks. I've had one on for some time now, and dropped it a few. Didn't do nothing.

Guess I'm unlucky. I'll go ahead and purchase a screen assembly and try to install it. Ironically I looked on Amazon for a tempered glass screen protector and didn't have much luck.

Go Ebay. They're mostly from China and Hong Kong, would take a little time but quality-wise, good enough. I had a dodgy screen I didn't care about, so I bought a tempered-glass, installed it and proceeded to test. Cracked corner of the digitizer but the glass remained intact.

I was sitting at my desk at work, and I went to get up and go to lunch. I didn't realize my phone was on my lap, but when I got up my phone fell out of my lap, and on to the carpet. The back came off and the battery came out ("big deal", I thought, since every other time I dropped a phone [not often], the battery came out). I get the battery, get the back, and go to grab the phone, when I realized that the front is basically shattered.
The phone didn't fall more than 3 feet onto carpeted floor, and I was just in awe at that. I still am. Fortunately, Sprint is going to replace it because I have insurance, and apparently there is no deductible which is nice. My EVO hasn't given me any problems though and I see about others who seem to and I hope that the refurb unit lasts longer than this one did. I might also be investing in an Otterbox or something.
Here's a pic of the carnage:

I dropped my phone onto the street when I was getting out of my car. It was from about 3-4' high. I bobbled it as a stood up and watched it crash face down to the ground in what appeared to be slow motion. Picked the phone up off the ground and it only had a few scratches on the corners. I thought for sure the screen would be cracked. I peeled off the screen protector when I got home, and not a single scratch on the screen. I don't use a case for the phone.
I guess my point to the story is that it could just be I was lucky, and you got unlucky. After my incident, I feel pretty confident in the HTC build quality.
Forgot to mention; sucks what happened to your phone. Good thing for insurance.

Yeah I dropped mine onto the wood floor at my house from a similar height as what happened today and nothing really happened, so that's why I was shocked. I dropped my Pre probably 4 or 5 times when I had it and nothing at all happened to it. The Pre was a tank for me, which is surprising since pretty much everyone else who had it complained bigtime about the build quality of it.
I'm debating on whether or not I should unroot my phone before I bring it back on Monday. The person at the store didn't even turn the screen on when I brought it in and approved it, but I didn't know if some flak would come of it running an (obviously not stock) rooted ROM when it got wherever it's going).
Or maybe they'll just toss it into the trash.
with the new what insurance is set up they should be able to fix your screen and hand it back to you IF its just the screen damaged
They'll actually just replace the screen for you at a repair center, instead ordering a refurb.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Could also be that the screen is or works like tempered/safety glass. You can take a ball peen hammer to the center of a sheet of safety glass with little to no affect. But take the same hammer and strike the edge of the glass and the sheet will crumble like the Yankees in a playoff game.
If your EVO landed on its side when it fell, that could be the cause. It's happened in my office many times with people's iPhones. I find that my Ghost Armor works well to diffuse the smaller bumps, though mine is covered in a rubberized case 80% of the time as well.
Hopefully you get a good replacement.

Seriously question build quality? You're kidding, right? ANY glass will shatter when dropped, period. This has nothing to do with build quality. Would you prefer it to be plastic and have a million scratches on the screen?
Now if you were to complain about the screen separation issues, THAT would be a build quality issue. But NO phone is perfect.
I've dropped my phone dozens of times, many from 3 ft, others from 5 ft, I do have a black rubber case on it that only says htc on the back that I picked up on launch day. so far its never came apart or scratched or anything happened that would make it less than mint. I'm impressed with it and honestly don't see a way to destroy the thing unless I wanted to

Drop glass from 3 ft onto carpet, and see how often it breaks. I venture to guess it'll almost never break. I have never once broken a phone and now my EVO slides off my lap and it shatters. And I have no right to question the quality of it?

The sample size is rather small but you're 1/1 so I'd venture a guess as to yes. Angle of impact seems to be the common denominator here, a flaw in the design there is not. $10 says you don't leave it on your lap and stand up to go to lunch again...but if you do report back here so we can hear about it again.
Its also possible your screen/glass might have had an imperfection in it as well . I have heard of glass windows in cars shattering with just the slightest of impacts . Granted they are rare , far and few between . Every once in a while the process of making the glass screws up causing weak points in its structure . Its possible this might be the case with yours . Glass was already weak from the manufacturing process and the small fall was enough to cause it to shatter .
I've dropped my phone from my lap getting out of my truck on asphalt. Thought for sure the screen was toast but just a few scuff marks around the plastic edge. second time it fell from waste height on concrete and that shattered the screen.
Otterbox offers good protection but I can't get over how HUGE the cases are. I ended up with Pt case. Just something to sheild the edges/corners a little better.
Thats why I'm calling bs the phone had to hit the desk or something you could slam the phone on carpet and not break the glass by the way if your at your desk why is the phone in your lap mobile porn or something

make sure you take out the battery and DON"T put it back in after as the phone will reboot.

The solution they have dries really quickly, they added some substance it in, so even if the tiniest bit gets in there, you shouldn't worry too much, unless you spill the whole bottle in there lol
EDIT: this is speaking from the person who DRENCHED the screen protector before applying lol

Does it go right to the edges of the screen?
I got one ordered this weekend hopefully arriving soon.
How difficult was the application? I'm not too keen on wet application (Zagg, ugh) but is it pretty much drench, lay it on the screen and shift to center ASAP? Past experience with Zaggs, I've usually had to lay it perfectly on the first try since I wouldn't be able to shift it around afterwards.
FYI, "byublue", as mentioned earlier, takes $3 off, which is slightly better than 20%.

I'm assuming all wet applications should be the same, which means that your experience with zagg will be similar with xo.
You wouldn't be able to shift it around after its applied. However, you can peel it upwards, apply some more liquid, then place it back down
Did that with my skinomi, had no problem with it, should work with all wet screen protectors
Got mine today and applied it tonight. It was my first wet application, and it was WAY easier than the (dry-apply) SGP Crystal I had on my Dinc.
It goes very close to the edge of the screen.
No orange peel
No rainbow effect

So I've never done a wet install. Basically I get as much of the liquid out as possible and then wait overnight for it to settle?
I don't think people realize that, sure even though your device isn't damaged from the liquid solution that may or may have leaked into the phone. BUT it probably set off the water damage sticker inside voiding your warranty.
That's the biggest fear for most people including myself.

To me it seems like the oleophobic coating is responsible. It's probably really soft and prone to scratches. Whatever the case, Samsung has really let me down. How could the rigidity of such a large screen get looked past QA when it can be scratched this easily? Anyways, just thought potential buyers be forewarned.
Been using it since December 2011. No scratches.
Did you look under a bright light? I have 2 other friends who also reported hair line scratches.
Do you have a screen protector? Do you use a carrying case? What do you wipe your screen with?
And this is why I always put a screen protector on my phone.
Man really weird I've had mine since Jan, would put it in pocket with keys and what not till I got a holster and I don't have one scratch. I guess it's really a hit or miss with the screen. I don't like running a screen protector sorry to hear

Yes I've looked under a bright light.
No screen protector.
No carrying case.
I wipe my screen with a micro fiber cloth (I honestly don't need to wipe the phone much.. not a lot of fingerprints are on the phone due to the oleophobic.. it works great).
The only protection I use are cases (Case-Mate Tough Case [dont use this anymore], Otterbox Commuter [don't use it anymore], and now I use Ringke 4G LTE full time) with GSM Extended Battery.
No case no screen protector been using for 3 months now and not a flaw.
I have a ****load of scratches on mine. Owned it since January. I thought the screen would be comparable to gorilla glass, but I don't believe it is. One of my scratches is probably an inch long and perfectly vertical. Either way I I don't really care that much.
I'm been using my nexus for a bit over a month without a screen protector, and I don't have any scratches like that.

My point was that it got scratched even when I cared so much for the phone. It seems to me like it got scratched from the lint in my pocket. I don't know about most people but that's alarming to me especially knowing I paid $400 for it.

You will find countless threads on this matter. Glass is relatively soft, even hardened glass. A lot of stuff can scratch it, the most common being simple dust particles (Quartz) which are readily available everywhere.
If you put your phone somewhere where it continually rubs against something -like your pocket- it will be scratched sooner or later. Basically as soon as a large enough Quartz particle makes its way into your pocket and on the screen.
So if you put a phone in your pocket without any protection, you didn't care enough for it. :-(
No case. No screen protector. Dropped once from a 6ft wall. Little ding in the corner.
Oh and I've had it since Dec. 15th.

No scratches since Canadian launch in December
Been using it for about 3 months now and I have a few light scratches near the top and bottom, and a few REALLY REALLY REALLY light ones on the screen, nothing that is actually visible without looking really hard. If you want 0 scratches get a screen protector because you're bound to get scratches. No phone out there has a totally scratch resistant screen.
They are all made of a glass/plastic hybrid so little particles floating around or getting on your screen will probably scratch it, especially if you wipe it everyday, might be something on the screen while you whip it :/.
But yeah don't blame Samsung for the screen scratching, they never said it can't be scratched and no company can guarantee that.
same here, two days one little scratch, always used with care
I've been tossing my phone in my pocket with keys, lighter, etc etc since November 18 and haven't had a scratch...

I, too, have slightly broken glass on my phone and have been considering replacing just the glass, but the display, digitizer and glass seem to be glued together on these AMOLED screens and I heard separating them isn't easy.
I might just play the 180€ and get it repaired at there official service center :/
It's much like the S3. I used the screen replacement videos from them as a guide. The key is to use lots of heat and work slowly. It comes off just fine from the digitizer. Getting it started can be a bit difficult to get under the glass, but once it's started just gently progress along and use a blow dryer on low heat. They are glued together, but can be separated with heat and slowly prying them off. Watch the S3 videos and you'll get the idea. I couldn't find and galaxy nexus videos but the S3 ones worked fine. At one point everyone said the same thing about them that you can't replace just the glass too can they are glued together. But they're quite separable.

Thanks, I will look into it some more. I just can't really justify spending the 180 I was quoted for to get the work done by some repair centre or spend 120 on the actual screen and digitizer and then doing it myself when this phone is hardly worth that price.

I don't have this phone right now but i have seen many asus users complaining about the screen...Their are many complaints regarding broken screen and Asus's fragile screen regardless of having gorilla glass 3
The shattered is around the very edge. I'm not quite sure if the shatter is due to the cat jumping on it and possibly a claw going into the screen, or if it was a result of the fall. Not sure. But yeah, supposedly GG3, but I'm not quite sure...

have you tried ebay for screen replacement?
this is what i did with a previous phone I broke, unfortunately the replacement screen had a defect,
but with a maintenance/disassembly guide, this is probably what i would try..

bad news, for me it starts to make a lot of inconvenients for this phone:
fragile screen (?)
very big size (almost phablet)
poor camera quality (software issue?)
I'm also quite surprised there isn't more interest from dev given its X86 CPU, because this was one of the main reason I got it first (non-ARM device and possibilities for other OS's (FirefoxOS, UbuntuTouch)),
now I realise the only thing that could make me keeping it is dual sim...

Most likely it is the fall. Regardless of having GG3 they still easily shatter by falling. Watch videos of dropping Samsung S1 to S6.. S6 did shattered even having GG4 equipped. I feel sorry on what happened on your new phone.. Im hoping you can get this serviced right away for replacement.
Wow, that's unlucky!
I dropped mine for the first time this weekend, onto a tiled patio floor from about waist height and it didn't break. I do have a cheap silicon cover on it though so that has probably paid for itself ten times over already.
Did you get the screen fixed? I dropped mine a couple of days back and the screen just shattered into pieces.:crying: I can still operate the touch screen, so I hope the digitizer and the LCD are still fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to get it fixed. I guess sending it to Asus Service center is the only option right now. I was wondering how much they will charge me for that. I'm in the US btw.
I have dropped mine 4 times , no damage so far. I have Asus' bumper case on it though .

The big size isn't a problem.Ergonomics is well,it stays well in hands.I wear quite skinny jeans and i can put it in pockets easily.Instead the fragile screen and the camera quality are very big problems :/
Even gorilla glass can crack from small height falls if the angle is right (or should i say wrong)..
Zenfone 2 does not have a magnesium alloy mid housing / mid frame like nexus 5 , lg g3 etc. The only "metal" thing inside is the LCD pannel cover, everything else is just cheap plastic. And we all know that plastic bends and glass shatters.
Gorilla glass 3 is strengthened and scratch-resistant, but it is by no means shatter-proof. If you drop a phone and you are unlucky with the angle of impact as it hits the ground then it will probably crack the glass. Bigger screens increase the likelihood of shattering. Gorilla glass 4 is supposed to give more shatter protection, but drop tests seem to suggest it still is not that effective.
Hi, I know this is kind of an old thread, but I don't want to make a new thread to ask a simple question about your phone. After you cracked it, was the touchscreen still responding or did it have problems like the OnePlus One and the LG G3 where the screen stopped responding? I'm considering getting this phone but I would rather know first.

Hi smartgid, i have shattered my screen too, have spare one standing, but for now my phone works great. No problems with responsiveness.
Pics below:
My daughter shattered her screen (zenfone 5 though, not 2) and it still responds as normal.
