Hi!
I've been trying to root and flash Cyanogen 12 to my unlocked Fido S4 i337M (Canadian) to no avail.
I'm coming from a Nexus phone, and jumped right in assuming it would be just as easy with Samsung as with my Nexus, thought I could use a toolkit like Wugs NRT.
I was wrong. I finally got my phone rooted, Cyanogen flashed, but then I couldn't play any media, no music, browser crashed when YouTube was used, and I had no service most of the time, all sorts of crap, so I decided to go back to stock and figure this out later.
Things really aren't in my favour. Using Odin, I flashed the Rogers stock ROM from here: http://www.androidrootz.com/p/galaxy-s4-stock-firmwares.html?m=1
The wifi won't turn on, the switch goes over to on and flips right back, so I tried the Bell one, still no luck.
Can anyone help me? What's going on?
The problem you seem to have is that the stock firmware you've flashed probably won't be the right one, your modem part of the firmware will be different than the one you need.
Look for another firmware or next time when flashing anything make sure it excludes the modem part

I've been working off and on for a week on this and I'm guessing I'm out of luck but figured I'd ask just in case I missed something on here.
I've been attempting to resurrect my father's GNex. He had it working fine -- stock 4.2.2 via OTA updates - it's never even been unlocked -- and then suddenly it gets stuck in a bootloop. He tried resetting it back to factory settings but it continued the loop -- would get as far as the language selection screen and then would reboot.
I attempted to unlock/reflash using the toolkit and it would get stuck on flashing the CDMA radio -- will hang for hours if I let it. I've tried the current 4.2.2 build, the original 4.0.4 using the GalazyNexusRestore utility, and everything in between. I've tried flashing the radios via CWM as well.
Of course I only attempted this myself (I've been rooting and installing ROMs since the G1) because the warranty ran out in August. Is there anything else I can try before giving him the bad news?
first of all have you tried odin? (basically its samsungs flashing tool)
second of all is a verizon gnex or sprint? (both are cdma)
for verizon try this- http://www.galaxynexusforum.com/forum/rescue-squad/4707-how-return-stock-using-odin-vzw-lte-only.html
for sprint try googling for "sprint galaxy nexus stock odin files" (mainly all you need are the correct files for sprint and the guide in the verizon post should work)
Finally got around to trying Odin. Just gave it a go (I've got a verizon phone) and it failed on radio.img.
I assume that there's nothing else that can be done?
Hello,
This is going to come off as noob-ish:
How can I flash a 4.3 TW-based ROM onto my rooted Canadian (Bell) Note 2?
I was running CeanROM5 for a while, flashed SlimKat 4.4 last weekend but I'd like to go back to TW.
I'm usually pretty familiar with rooting and flashing ROMs (Desire Z, Note 10.1, Nexus 7...etc.), but I've read too many horror stories of people loosing their modems, IMEI going wrong...etc. with the Note 2, especially since there's a few variations of the device, so I want to be careful.
I was going to flash the stock firmware from Sammobile via Kies but my phone is being detected as a i317 and not a i317m and I'm wondering if that's a problem? (I know I could use ODIN, but again, I'm worried about screwing up the modem with what little I know right now) I was then going to use CF-Auto-Root (as I'm sure I'll lose root) to clean things up.
TL;DR I've got a Canadian (Bell) Note 2 running SlimKat, how to get onto a TW-based 4.3 rom without screwing anything up?
Thanks guys!
So, after waiting hours for the stock 4.3 firmware to download from Sammobile - it was corrupt, so I'm re-downloading, therefore I can't flash via odin just yet (apparently I still have another 2 hours on this download).
Kies won't recognize my phone either (I suspect this might be due to the whole i317 vs i317m thing?). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling kies on my PC, using different USB ports, and rebooting my phone...etc.
Again, any help would be super appreciated! Thanks!
Alright, so I'm running 4.3 and everything is working (wifi, modem...etc) but I can access superSU.
I used CF-Auto Root and it looked like it flashed the stock recovery. I have superSU installed but I can only open (not uninstall) it from the Play Store.
However, every time I do try to open it I get the pop up window "unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped".
So what am I doing wrong?
I guess this thread can be deleted as I seem to have sorted things out.
Philz recovery is very nice BTW.
Here's the story. I purchased a factory refurb'd Tab Pro 10.1 (SM-T520NZKAXAR) on Woot a few weeks back. I live in Canada, but it is a USA tablet, if that matters. It came with a 90-day Samsung warranty. As soon as I got it, I started looking at custom ROMs. I have experience with custom ROMs on my HTC One m8 (and old m7), but not with any Samsung devices. I wish I had kept it stock for a few weeks first to check it out, but here we are.
I created a nandroid backup of the stock firmware, however I quickly deleted it during a wipe when flashing my first custom ROM, which was GraveD's v3.0. It seemed to go OK, but then it would start to freeze up and reboot on it's own. This seemed to happen mostly under load, and especially when trying to install apps from the Play store. I tried going back to the stock kernel, thinking that could be the problem. It stopped the crashing, but then wifi wouldn't work. So I could choose between having a tablet that crashes all the time, and has difficulty installing apps, or one without wifi. Both were basically useless.
I tried installing another custom ROM, GigaWatts Pro. Again, flashing seemed to go well, and the ROM also seemed to work very nicely for a couple of days. No random reboots, and wifi worked great. I spent a few days downloading all of my apps and getting things set up the way I like, when yesterday something went wrong. Perhaps the tablet lost its root (is that possible?). All of a sudden, apps are crashing all over the place (Unfortunately, [insert app name] has stopped). Titanium backup hangs at "Asking for root...". Installing apps is also difficult again. The tab doesn't reboot on it's own, but Play Services crashes constantly. Whenever I try to get into developer options, the Settings app crashes. I'm not even 100% sure USB debugging is enabled right now, although I'm still able to flash using ODIN.
I tried doing a factory reset and re-installing GigaWatts. Same problems. Tried making sure the root was OK. Same problems. I've tried using twrp 2.8.0.0 as well as 2.7.1.0 with no luck.
Right now, I've downloaded the stock firmware for Canada T520UEUANI1 4.4.2 (although the tab was bought from a USA site). I assume this also installs it's own Kernel. It shows Kernel version:
3.4.39-2776001
[email protected] #1
Mon Sep 15 17:44:40 KST 2014
I'm experiencing the same problems. Google Play Newsstand crashes every 10 minutes or so. Settings is almost useless. Installing apps is problematic.
Can anybody tell me if there's something I'm missing? Anything left to try? Does it sound like a hardware/ROM/kernel problem? If it's hardware, can I still utilize the Samsung warranty after trying to flash custom ROMs? I'm going to try to download another Cellular South stock ROM, but it seems like the problems are persisting regardless of which ROM i have installed, so I think it's something else (kernel or hardware-related).
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. My new tablet is basically useless, and I've run out of ideas.
Try this latest firmware since you mentioned your tablet is the XAR model the firmware should be cellular south (wifi)
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/39630/T520UEUANK1_T520XARANK1_XAR.zip/
If that doesn't help then it could just be a bad tablet .
(btw when you flashed a custom rom you probably tripped the hardware knox flag and voided any warranty it had, I guess you could play dumb if they ask and say it came like that since it was refurbished, and hope they still repair/replace it)
I just tried the USA cellular south firmware. Still experiencing the exact same issues. I'm completely out of ideas. Does anyone else have any ideas? Otherwise I'm going to have to try warranty service and hope for the best. Is there anything I can do to restore the Knox flag before I send it in?
Also, in download mode the tab is recognizing the system as custom. Is this normal after flashing a stock image?
So do a factory reset in recovery, and clear the cache also. Then load the cellular South file thru Odin. Then factory reset again. See if this clears your problems.

I've tried the Cellular South firmware to no avail. I'll be trying to warranty the tablet now. Fingers crossed!
Hi folks. Admitted Noob here asking for help.
[backstory]
After many years resistance I finally decided to get a phone. Freedompop's free plan was enough to push me over the fence. Found a nice S3 (L710VPUDOH1) on ebay and bought it. Everything was fine...except the stock rom had so much crap in it I was about to have a seizure. Back in the day I had put CM on a nookcolor so I thought that was the way to go. I consulted with a friend who assured me that CM played nicely with freedompop so down the rabbit hole I went.
[the first sign of trouble]
Installing CM went fine. Odin. Heimdall. I installed the latest clockwork mod touch recovery (6.0.4.5). Then I installed the latest CM snapshot (cm-12.1-20151117-SNAPSHOT-YOG7DAO1K7-d2spr.zip) and the appropriate gapps. Worked great. Nice and fast, good configuration options, no bloat....but it couldn't connect up to the 3g/4g network. Freedompop worked as long as WiFi was on and would not otherwise. Crap. What's the point of a cell phone if I have to have a WiFi hotspot???
Some googling revealed that the APNs were wrong so I tried that route. I was able to get LTE working but never got 3G. I live out in the boonies, so 3G is kinda important. Also found that CM breaks Sprint's PRL auto update which doesn't seem too happy.
[^H^H^H^H^H]
So, I decided to go back to the factory ROM and see how FP worked as I dutifully made a backup before installing CM. Now the SHTF. When I restore from backup in CWM (followed by a factory wipe data and cache to avoid the boot loop) the ROM cannot connect to Sprint's network. Doesn't know its IEMI or much of anything. It does connect up to wifi, log into my google account, get my paid apps, etc....but still no phone.
I installed Kies and attempted to restore/upgrade firmware (non-emergency mode). Kies got to about 66% and said there was an unexpected error. I'm guessing it didn't like the custom recovery and just plain quit on me. Was worried that I'd made a brick but alas I could still get to download mode. </bullet dodged>
I would like to put the phone back to stock (including recovery) but I have no factory recovery image. Does anyone have a recovery image for L710VPUDOH1? Alternatively, is there any harm in flashing the full ND8 onto the phone even though it had OH1 running before? I seem to remember reading things about bricking phones when trying to downgrade....which is in effect what I would be doing.
Any other suggestions about how to get back to stock would be most appreciated.
TIA
You can flash nd8. Nj2 is newer though. I don't think anyone has captured the oh1 tar yet. The only thing you should not do is flash anything before nd8 (pre Knox) like mk3 or older. Which is jellybean anyways so....
Hope this helps.
Yes, thank you; that was exactly what I needed to know.
I have a working phone at the moment so stock is not necessary required. For others that may be interested I flashed in Wicked X 8.2. From there the phone once again knew its IMEI and I was able to carrier reset and get it activated with Freedom Pop.
Hi all, I have a note 2 shg-i317 that was originally on Bell in Canada. It was unlocked and the aws mod done to it, I use freedom mobile, aka T-mobile in the states.
I was running a Rom for the past 3 years Slimfast 4.4 and liked it. I had tried Nugat on another phone, thought I would try the [ROM][7.1.2][OFFICIAL] LineageOS for N7105
I did the upgrade, broke the root, could not get a few things working, so I decided to restore the Slimfast backup I had just made (complete including modem etc) and everything works except the GPS.
GPS for me is huge, I use it a lot. I cannot lock on to 1 satellite now. Before i was able to lock onto a minimum of 16 in about 30-45 seconds, if outside.
I really dont care if I can get to 7.1 at the moment. I need my GPS back - any troublshooting for getting GPS to work on this phone?
James
I would try to flash the original stock for your phone and country from sammobile. com
Gps should work normaly then. If not your hardware is broken. If it works you can always flash your data back from your Slimfast rom.

Crap, I am posting here, because I did it again. Again not sure how. I tried to run Reserection, and I guess that messed up the GPS.
To put the original stock rom on.. I have to do that through ODIN? I dont remember how I fixed this last year.. Sorry.
Hope somone can help I need the GPS.
James
ps. Used odin 3.09 to flash the original rom... still no GPS
You flashed the latest 4.4.2 room?

The Rom that I flashed to try and restore the GPS was I317MVLUDNF1_I317MOYADNF1_BMC (mine was an originally BELL phone)
But that did not repair the GPS from me flashing resurection.. I THINK did it. I flashed an android 6 and an android 7 rom. (Mokee) but tried to go back to my Slimfast.. and the GPS was now broken.
Basically what I did a year ago.. somehow I fixed it then.. but cannot remember at all how I did it.
James
The note 2 sold by Rogers, Bell, and Telus are exactly the same model and stock roms from these carriers can be cross flashed.
Try flashing the stock ROM twice in Odin with a factory reset in between each flash.

Do you mean boot up the rom.. run the reset in the rom? or flash.. - load TWRP back in.. WIPE.. then FLASH again with odin?
Thanks for helping btw.
James
I have backups (complete all partitions) of my rom.. Slimfast 4.4 from 2-3 days ago.. when I tried this. SO.. if I can get the Factory rom to restore the GPS.. how can I restore the backup.. I saw somewhere that the EFS partition could be left out and that might help? dont restore the modem? how??
James
I meant flash with Odin, boot into stock recovery, factory reset, flash again with Odin, boot into stock recovery, factory reset, and boot into the stock ROM.
Nope, still no GPS lock.. I have the flashing circle (always had) and it will not lock.. I read about where people go into a service mode and rebuild the NV? .. I assume this is something that Mokee or Reserection did.. not sure how.
Any other ideas?
James
what about using Odin or TWRP to put different modems in? does the modem effect the GPS?
tried this.. does not seem to. grrrrr wish I knew how I fixed this.
James
I assume there are no loose wires. Does it get a lock when using wifi? Not sure what else to suggest.
Not sure about rebuilding NV.
No.. I broke it with playing with custom roms.. Liniage was last year.. I did not try that this year.. but tried both android 6 reserection and android 7 Mokee.. and I am pretty sure they messed it up.. I am also pretty sure there was something I did .. easy like load an old STOCK rom and it fixed it.. I was then able to put my slimfast 4.4 back over it and it was fine. Unfortunatly .. not enough people still using this device.. I will have to have patience I guess.
James
So I have tried differenct stock roms, but I think the issue is ODIN will not restore code from a rom image that is HARDWARE based. I wanted to use Samsung smartswitch but they disabled the part of it that allowed you to factory reset the phone, this seemed to work for several people. Many have also reported entering a code and going into a service mode.. there you can do to a menu that will rebuild hardware modules back to default. But I have not been able to get into that mode because it seems to be a touchwiz only option, and I cannot find a factory rom that is touchwiz based for this model.
What needs to be done is a true FACTORY ROM image.. that would revert all software and hardware back to original, but I cannot seem to find that anywhere.
James
The only factory roms that I know of come from places like sammobile.com and they are all based on TouchWiz which is Samsung's launcher.
So guess what? put Ressurection back on.. and the GPS is back.
I cannot get it to work in any KitKat based rom.. but now anything Marshmellow up.. works.. HMMMMMM
