Hi all,
my Z1 compact has been swapped (warranty) because it did not charge via USB anymore (but it charged in the dock). So I made a TWRP backup of the old device (excluding TA) and restored it on the new one. Everything seemed to be perfect but the camera does not work anymore. It does not focus when you press the camera button and it also takes no pictures. When I do a 'factory reset', everything is fine again but I restored my TWRP backup once more and have the hope that somebody has a clue on how to restore the camera funtion. Till now I cleared cache and data from every single app that had camera in its name. Whitout success
Maybe someone has a clue or a hint?
Thx so far,
DiLeon
I have the same problem with my z3c. I did a TWRP backup before sending the phone to the sony service due to some microphone issues. After getting it back I restored the TWRP backup and now the main (back) camera is black. Front camera is working.
I don't know if this has someting to do with drm keys, but my bootloader is still locked. I'm using a rooted deboted sony rom with xdualrecovery.
it is not recommended to restore a nandroid backup on "another" device, cause maybe Sony changed something inside during repair.
The much more better way is to backup all (non-system) apk´s with Titanium Backup and restore them on the "new" device. This way works for sure.
i have the same problem lads, noone has an answer ?
I have a Z3 same thing, restore without backing up TA and rear camera is black. Anyone ever find a solution?
no, unfortunately not
I had the same camera problem when flashing and rooting the Lollipop FW. I recommend you follow moonryder's suggestions (i.e. restoring app and data of only non-system applications from nandroid backup using Titanium Backup)
Hello.
My Z3 compact back camera not working. Only black display.
Maybe anything fixed this problem?

Maybe worth a try - backup camera app, delete it, download stock apk, (try different versions), install and attempt restore.
I've got some info on findings about Nandroid Xperia restoring and a possible fix for the camera. I've posted about it here:

Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded my cwm from 6.0.1.2 non touch to 6.0.2.3 touch with Odin and when doing a backup it takes a really long time and eventually fails about halfway through backing up /data. I thought maybe the recovery got corrupt or something so I used rom manager to upgrade to 6.0.3.1 non touch and tried again. This time it took longer to backup /system and while backing up data the phone rebooted. I've been running CM10.1 nightlies for quite some time now and kt kernel with no issues, and I always backup before flashing but I need to fix this before i flash anymore nightlies. Anyone else have this issue before? I've been wanting to clean wipe/install my phone for a while now but I just don't have the time right now.
My phone is a d2can on Bell. I know that's relatively irrelevant information but doesn't hurt to mention.
Also I installed the same 6.0.2.3 touch on a GS3 that I just got for my girlfriend and it backs up fine.
Also apparently in attempting these backups it somehow messed up some of my settings. I had a sign in error for gmail which went away as soon as I hit sync now in the Google account, although I had to sign back in to Facebook. It also changed a bunch of my sound settings... Imagine my surprise as I get a Whatsapp message and an Opeth song starts blaring (and also doesn't stop upon checking the message...) lol.
I back up my apps and settings with Titanium Backup so I can easily restore everything when I have a chance to do a clean wipe and install, but how do I fully wipe/reinstall the recovery to fix this backup issue? Maybe I just have to hit the factory reset button in the recovery?

I would download Goo Manager and flash TWRP, forget CWM. If you hit factory reset then you are going to have to go through the clean install process. If I were you I'd flash TWRP and then clean install whatever your into. It'll take maybe 30 minutes to get the rom setup the way you want it and you'll have the piece of mint that everything was cleanly wiped and you have a fresh start.
I guess I can try TWRP. I don't really get why everyone rags on CWM, it works just fine. I was using 6.0.1.2 for about 7 months without a hitch, this is the first problem.
If I did a clean wipe I'd still backup my pictures and my apps from TiBu and restore everything after wiping, it would just take a while. I don't have an external SD so it's all on the internal. I might have some time tonight to try it out.

I would copy your pictures (or any other irreplaceable files) to a computer for safe keeping just in case it hits the fan. Apps are whatever, but you can't retake pictures so I'd back them up somehow; computer, dropbox, etc.
Same Issues on a SG3
I also recently upgraded and have been having the same issues. It doesn't seem to matter whether I enter recovery through or use Rom Manager to enter into in recovery. Each time the back up fails. I had just switch back after having TWRP issues where it back up would not fail but when they were to be use in recovery I would get a message before restarting stating I didn't actually back up the OS. ( I realize it might not be reliant info but I've learn a little to much is better than not at all)
I've noticed it will fail and restart only when I try to back up to my SD card. Yesterday it was giving me trouble by mounting and unmounting repeatedly. I thought I had fixed all the problems after I did a diskcheck and had my computer scan and fix all found errors.
If anyone can link me to a previous version of CWM or help with this back up issue you'll have the OP's and my appreciation.
Thanks in advance.

Are you backing up to an SD card or the phone it's self?

So was your problem fixed by switching to TWRP?
I know when I had tried using TWRP, the issue I was having after back ups, was it would ask me if I was sure I wanted to leave since it said I didn;t install a OS.
Does that help you to find a solution?

Hello everyone
After restoring a backup from another asus zenfone 2, the sim1 stopped working.
The sim2 works without problems, but I really need you to function the Sim1.
The SIM 1 is read, but it says "no signal".
The address IMEI is not right, but another number.
This is "004999010640000"
Please Help Me
Please see troubleshooting steps in ZenUI app called ASUS Support. Go to Apps>ASUS Support>Assistance>SIM Card>SIM card not detected. This may be hardware issue and will require sending in for warranty service. If you are in the USA or Canada and would like RMA assistance and please feel free to contact me direct at [email protected]
Sincerely,
ASUS_USA
I had the same problem. I fixed it by installing a fresh ROM (reset first).
I used titanium backup to restore the phone.
I didnt see any other solution and this has happened to me on 2 occasions after a restore (twrp).

Hey, I'm having the same issue. When you mean fresh rom what do you mean? Stock? or what?
Could usually be any time but stock is what I have always used, is a common problem when restoring from term, must reset data before restoring and for me using bootloader has most successful way, though I have also used sideloading from stock recovery

Yes any rom.
Thank you all for your responses .
I tried but nothing worked , the Sim is always " not visible " .
I would send him back to a center Asus but I do not know if the warranty is invalidated .
The bootloader is now black and not white ( as in stock ) and I removed the permissions of root .
What do you recommend?
Thanks a lot

As it seems this may be an issue with TWRP, restore functions. EDIT, I have duplicated this issue, TWRP is not the issue here for me.
It seems to be an issue with restoring my rooted Stock Rom 2.20.40.97 only. After doing so again, it is an issue that I recreated immediately, and again fixed with a new Rom is installed fresh.
I have backed up and restored Cyanogen Mod 12.1 without issue on it's own, and my SIM 1 still remains working. Must be something with the Stock Rom, not enjoying being restored by TWRP. EDIT done.
I did a backup of my Zenfone ZE551ML or Z00A with 2.20.40.97, rooted and bootloader unlocked, with TWRP 2.8.7.2. Then I proceeded with installing the new Cyanogen 12.1 Rom, setup my apps and did another complete backup.
Although, I needed some data from a few apps, personal data, i.e. PGP personal key and a encrypted text backup key, that I forgot to put on my External MicroSD storage card before I did the Cyanongen 12.1 Rom upgrade/update. So upon Restoring using TWRP backup of my original stock rom, was the first sign of SIM 1 no longer working for me.
A subsequent Restore using TWRP with my new backup of my Cyanongen 12.1 Rom, now had the same issue, SIM 1 not working.
Install of modded rom went perfectly, as well as the backups.
Installing a fresh Rom custom or from ASUS will fix the issue.
I can confirm that this worked for me, and my SIM 1 does indeed work again . I used the Paranoid Rom and recommended Gapps for this Rom as a new Install and TWRP to install it.
Only question I have, is can I do TWRP restores from previously created backups using adb command lines and sideloading them in order to switch between my Rom's?
As doing new Install's all the time does not fit into my life schedule easily.
Hi friends.I am facing a strange issue since 3.2.8 version.Whenever I try to restore from a nandroid backup,my phone does not go past the boot logo.If I restore the data partition only, then it works fine. But total restore is not working.I am now on open beta 10.But in case of both OOS 3.2.8 as well as beta 9 I have faced the problem. If I want to revert to some backup,I have to clean install it.Can anybody throw some light on this problem?

i had simmilar issues trying to switch between MM roms in the summer. it was really strange, and i don't know if that's even possible or if i just messed up really badly... but what i observed was, that a nandroid backup in internal storage would get damaged if i went and deleted another backup in the same twrp folder FROM WITHIN A ROM (while properly booted up). like, if there were two backups and i went and deleted one via a file manager, the other one would have some missing parts... sometimes it was missing data, sometimes certain system apps, and sometimes it wouldn't even boot up as you describe.
sadly, i haven't found any solution to that, you can now delete that old backup, it's useless. other than that, i learned to always keep just one backup and not mess with that twrp folder in internal storage.
really strange behavior though, i still don't get why and how that's even possible
Hey guys,
I really need help. I was about to update my brother op3 from 3.2.4 to 3.2.8. When I was done I wanted to continue to flash to 4.0 but when I use the advanced reboot to boot into recovery it suddenly said "factory reset"!!!! Everything is gone even from the storage! I cant even backup from the backup file from twrp because it is gone! Can anyone please help me out? There are software to recovery this but I have to pay for all of them and they are not cheap!
Thank you in advance!
After a factory reset, even paid recovery tools aren't able to fully restore your data to their original state. At best, you'll get back a majority of the individual files you had on your phone prior to the wipe. The more you use the phone after wiping it, the more the old data is overwritten. At this point, I would just make the best out of this unfortunate event and clean flash whatever OS you were trying to update to. At least the phone will be de-cluttered at this point. You may even notice that the phone feels a little faster afterwards, and may even improve your battery life slightly.
If you had something really important on your phone that wasn't backed up, data recovery tools may be able to restore it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Additionally, TWRP backups do not backup media files such as music, photos, personal documents, etc. Even if you were able to find a nandroid backup, you would only get back your OS, apps, and app data. Most of this can be restored by just downloading everything again.
In the future, I would recommend saving nandroid backups directly to a USB flash drive through USB OTG. Music and photos can also be backed up to the cloud through various free or paid services (Google Photos for example).

Chance to recover your files are verry slim. Use the TWRP provided by Bluspark, it's on his main thread, stock twrp seems to have many issues.
Recently I dirty flashed PE+ ROM into my moto g40 fusion in a hurry without looking at the developer instructions(which clearly says I should clean flash). So ,now my phone is stuck on starting screen with a faded Google logo.I did not even take any backup(Silly Me)!
But somehow I am able to turn on flashlight by long pressing lock button(It was previously set ). I even hear alarms. I think That means phone is awake but for some reason the display is just a grey Google logo
How to fix this? What should I do?
I think performing a factory reset might boot the device. But Can I somehow recover the data?
@arsradu Can you please help me out?

Hello,
I don't have the phone anymore. So this is general info.
For as far as I know, you can't recover the data. However, Google does automatical backups at regular intervals, if you let it. So...chances are you might already have a backup. You could try to use it after factory resetting your phone.
Something else you could try...is flashing back the older version you had on top of this one. Maybe it will let you boot into it successfully so you can get access to your data. After that, I would suggest taking a backup, if you don't have one already.
And if you want the newer version again, make sure you follow the instructions given by the developer and see if that works.
I'm not aware of any other way.
Yeah, it could be that the phone is alive, but...if you can't interact with it...it doesn't help.
Thank you arsradu for replying..

I knew you don't have the phone anymore.I read that in the conversations. But I was kinda desperate. So, Sorry that I bothered you.
I hadn't allowed Google to backup my data except for photos and videos.
Flashing the older version of the rom on top of it was the first thing I tried,But the PE Recovery said the data was corrupted , didn't let me to boot into it and it wanted me to factory reset . So in the hope of keeping the data I reflashed the same rom.
But, the exact same advice from you today gave me an idea.I know the data is intact in the device, If I somehow can backup this ,I might restore it in a clean flashed rom!
So I went through other XDA threads, watched some YouTube videos.
Then I boot it into twrp(again, thanks to your tutorial) took a backup of only data, wiped everything, flashed the previous version and restored the backup. And now I am writing from my own device🥹🥹.
But the problem is partially solved.I lost some important files from internal storage (as expected) .When I tap, I cannot open important settings options like individual app info, developer options, restore and backup etc .I can't swipe down the quick settings menu. When I try to toggle night light the display is just getting dark altogether.

Glad you managed to find a way! Good job!
My suggestion would be to make a backup, while you still can, and do a clean installation of the rom.
