[Feature Request] More mobile optimalized website/forum - About xda-developers.com

I really use the website a lot, but unfortunately the mobile version is working awful...
For example, the XDA Portal Posts are very ugly positioned on mobile phone screens. you can't scroll a little bit to the right and there are advertisements and so on..
I can continue this way, but I think you might notice my point. The mobile orientated css is awful right now (in my opinion) and (in my opinion) needs to be changed.
XDA, you càn do it! I know that!

There's a feedback/recommendation thread for such suggestions, which can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987254
:good:

Ah I didn't know that. Thank you for pointing me the right direction anyway!

I do not bother with the newer xda themes, stay with 2010!!!
Also use a browser like Atlas (set to 175% screen) that can force desktop.
Then fall back to Chrome or NoChromo for editing.
Set xda options set to view threads linear, newest first. Then on a long thread, once you read the newest, change the drop down to hybrid to see the Op. Then switch as needed.
This is so you do not have to press that tiny little button to view the latest post in 2010 theme.

Why not use the app?

(Requests/Suggestions) A Mobile Site for XDA plus some other improvements

I tried to surf this website on my browser on the mytouch 3g and realized that it is a pain the the @$$ to surf. I was wondering if there can be a mobile site.
- You can easily log into your account to access User CP and check your messages.
-Search for Threads and/or Add New Threads feature
-You can pick between Mobile or Desktop View
Also there are some other things that I feel could be better.
-When someone quotes you, you can get an email notification telling you. This way people don't have to subscribe to every thread they put a post to see if people respond to your post.
-A Google Chrome Plug-In like you can see your Account Status easier or search for forums from the URL Bar.
If anyone else has any issues that they want to be fixed please post them I'm pretty sure a Mod or Admin is going to see this thread.
I'm not sure if this has been proposed before but if it has please direct me to the thread and/or lock this thread. I really don't want to be banned or suspended. I searched but could find anything.
This probably would have been best to post in the sticky called (requests) From the Users to the Mods & Admins. However, I at least have an answer one of your questions, the mobile site one. Somebody on the boards (ktemkin) made a mobile site for XDA-Developers, which is can be accessed by going to http://xda-developers.mobi. It's not the prettiest site and it doesn't have full functionality, but it gets the job done better than any other solution out there at the moment. Hope that helps
Did not know about this. Like u said it's not pretty, but it's the best we have right now.
But vBulletin comes with built-in pda display -- no one ever sees this because it's obscure in the top-left menu on the homepage:
PDA layout

meh, that's just the standard Vbulletin Archive View, branded as a PDA layout. It's better than the standard view when on a mobile browser, but xda-developers.mobi renders things much better IMO. View the forum with your Hero's browser using each one, and I'm pretty sure you'll prefer xda-developers.mobi over the archive view. As I said, neither are perfect solutions, and a dedicated client (like the now halted XDApp) would be best, but both can get the job done to a degree.

Official Bug Report List for XDA2010 Style (Forum Redesign)

The XDA 2010 theme is in Open Beta.
Use this thread to report bugs in the new forum style. Screenshots are helpful! Also, be sure to tell us what browser and version you are using!
Please DO NOT report:
- Bugs in IE6 or IE7. We are aware of several issues in IE7 and are working to fix these. IE6 users will need to continue using the old template or upgrade.
- Bugs related to the fact that long thread titles sometimes overlap other elements on the page.
We are working to fix the above ASAP.
Thanks everyone!
MOD EDIT: tnyynt: You can read a detaled tutorial called Where Is Everything In The New Forum Style?
Not a bug but rather an unncessary feature: Make the font in signatures (currently Trebuchet MS) the same as the posts (Verdana), else it looks a bit strange.
Great work!, 2010 skin looks great
- When going to write a PM, when entering member´s name, on old style soon as I started to type member name it displayed a list with possible matches, that feature is no longer present on 2010 style.
- Using Opera 10.53.
- There is a squared empty space (I know fir publicity) on the left side of Accesories, Marketplace, Networking and Off topic section, that is not looking good.
- IN general 2010 style loads a bit slower than old skin

Again, this is known and mentioned in the announcement.
I'm going to add the announcement to the first post of this thread.

The font/size displaying (in Firefox) is different for a post that quotes another post, than for a post with no quoting. There's something odd going on there, because quoted posts use the same font/size as a regular post (used to be in italics in the old style). When you quote a post the quote is in the normal sort of font, but then your own reply is smaller, which looks strange.
Edit - just checked, and there's the same "issue" using IE 8 and Chrome.
The "you last visited" and "Private Messages" text at the top right aren't always right-aligned which seems to depend on how long the navigation text is.
"HTC Hero: G2 Touch > Hero, G2 Touch Android Development"
is one example.
Using Firefox 3.6.3 on Ubuntu Lucid.

I find this too.
When resizing the browser window (Chrome beta channel), the PM link and forum journey thing merge and the formatting goes weird. I think this is the same bug as above.
I don't find a bug; their is on thing; thats the fact I find that you see not clearly the different background color between a earlier post and your reply to it!
thats the only thing I can mention fore it! Not that I don't see the other different now thy are good! just the fact of the different color to a replay is not well visible! thats all!
sorry fore my English!

Do you mean when quoting posts (like this)?
I can't say it really bothers me... Maybe my screen contrast is higher than yours?
I would like to see some differentiation in colour between stickied and non-stickied threads, though.
Edit: And I know these aren't really bugs, but the 'poll' icon needs updating/enlarging to match the others
Another thing I found, and it's probably vBulletin rather than the redesign, but if you enable pop-ups for PMs and click to open them in a new window, nothing happens in Chrome.
Nice work, indeed , i really like the new style
No bug found but just a suggestion, a more darkness colour between unreaded and readed threads.

1. The colours seem fine all on 3 screens I've tested on. Maybe a screen shot of the exact bit that you are having the problem with.
2. A new poll icon is probably needed.
3. I think this is a Chrome thing, did it work in the old design in Chrome?

Unread are emboldened and read are not. Just like with the old theme. Forums with unread posts have a Dark > icon, where as read ones have a White > icon.

I also am finding little to no difference between the quoted parts of messages.
it is probably a contrast issue.
on my laptop with nvidia gts 360M, If i crank all the settings down, I can finally see a color difference between the quoted text. (but then my entire system looks horrible)
my 19" acer lcd on PC with generic intel graphics also looks the same. (bad)
I am using firefox 3.6.3 on Ubuntu for both laptop and computer.
although I have contrast issues with Yahoo mail as well
so I am sure it is my setup.

Looks like there might be some merit in changing the BG colour of the quoted text.
IIRC, the original BG colour was too light and blinding the private beta testers. So the admin's made it darker, I'm guessing that the Quoted BG colour wasn't darkened, leading to the lack of contrast between the two.
Dave
aside from the contrast issue,
I love the new design.
Infact I have been using it for a few days now.
I didn't even know it was NEW. I just found it and thought....How did I miss this cool feature....LOL

Agreed. I am using a calibrated panel here, and there is minimal difference between the quoted and normal text colour.
Also, a subjective one, as I really like the theme otherwise, but it seems to be a bit 'plain'. I actually find myself losing attention to threads and doing other stuff with this theme a bit more than before.
I guess I amn't finding it as readable as before, but I can't quantify it really.
Also, is there a possibility of taking the final theme, and cloning it, but popping a 320px width restriction on it, making a mobile version? That would be a nice thing, although the pages take a bit longer than before to render on webkit 3.1 browser.
P
I have the same contrast issue. There really is very little difference on my own screen between the background of the quoted text and the other text.

Made a tweak on this to darken up the quoted parts. Better?
We really appreciate all the comments, and we'll get to these things one by one.

XDA 2013 Beta Theme is Now Live! [Comments Thread]

Today we are announcing the public beta of the new "2013" theme for the XDA forums. This theme is in active development, though for the most part it should be suitable for daily use. You can access it via the "Style Chooser" in the bottom left corner of most pages.
Please note: this theme is not bug free. It's possible that you will notice some funky behavior while using it.
Some of the primary benefits/features:
When we finish optimizing, it will be significantly faster than the existing "XDA 2010" theme.
Optimized for displays 1280 width screen resolution
We've added a sidebar to update you on PMs and subscribed threads/forums. This is collapsible for users when reading threads.
Tabbed home page which will default to showing your subscriptions to give you easy-access to the forums you care about most.
Enhanced device information pages (for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1533) that will show specs and root instructions for some devices.
Plus many other little additions and improvements.
Most of the user-facing changes are cosmetic. We created XDA 2013 as a platform for much more significant enhancements to the site, which will be rolling out over the next few months.
Please use this thread to post your comments and suggestions. If you have bugs to report, please post your thoughts in this thread.
Thank you for your help!
Just wondering, is there a place where we users can send in our device's info, so that the people working on it won't have so much work?
Cheers for all the effort put into it! Looks awesome!
Use it sice a week and its very fast. the only problem is the thanks-expand-arrow, he is too wide away from the text
Admin Edit: I made the "expand" text clickable also. - js1999
Edit: Thanks Admin
Awesome loving the new refreshed look of the site
just a suggestion.
The "online" symbol should be more green as currently difference between offline(black) and online(green) is very less noticeable
I really hate that there is so much crammed everyhwere, the right side portal stories are annoying, if I want portal stories I click on "portal"
I think the 2010 version is better, some of the fonts are cooler on the 2013 version but there is just way too much crammed on the screen at once.
sweet, trying it now.
This is defiantly different, looks clean, futuristic. I like it, will take sometime for my eyes to adjust to it tho.

You can close the sidebar if you don't really like it.
So far, the only thing I don't really like about this is the fact that if you click on a device (e.g. the HD2) all of the subforums appear. I understand that outside of the HD2 this won't be a major problem, but it still looks a bit clunky. Also, on normal zoom (i.e. I've pressed ctrl+0) I get a scroll bar thing along the bottom? Seems a bit odd, probably just a little glitch. Don't have it outside of when I'm replying though.
Needs are darker font system wide. Post_bit fonts are too light. That's the only thing that I see that I would change at this point.
But, that's just the VBulletin Admin in me coming out. LOL.

It's up the top right in the forum view too.
I think he meant the Forum Home view. There is no choice to collapse it on the main All Forums page.
Hmm I must not be special enough to get that option yet .
How about an inverted/dark/black theme for AMOLED devices when people don't use Tapatalk?
Oh my, this is quite nice.
The new theme is kinda awesome
But the page goes out of my screen so i have scroll a lil bit ... !!
Can we maybe have an option to only remove the portal posts from the side bar but instead display ALL messages and subscribed threads / fora?
Because clicking on "View all messages" takes you to the PM page. I'd rather have them in that list (best would be if it takes as much place as available ) (same for threads and fora)
if possible remove xda portal sidebar......if other guys agrees on it

Preview the New XDA 2015 Forum Template!

We've been hard at work on a complete redesign of the XDA Forums and Portal. We wanted to build something that was clean, modern, fast, and that could manage to include a lot of useful functionality without feeling cluttered. While we're not finished with the new forum template, which we're calling "XDA 2015", we're close enough that XDA members that want to can use the new template and help us find bugs and other issues before we make it the default template for all users. :good: :good:
To see the new forum template click this link. You can always go back to the previous 2013 template (or any of our styles) with the style-picker in the bottom left corner of all forum pages.
Over the coming weeks, we'll be making many more changes to XDA 2015 to improve performance, readability, and functionality. We also have a few surprises coming that aren't ready just yet. :highfive:
This beta is only for the desktop version of the site, as the mobile template is not yet ready for testing. Please mention any bugs you find or requests you have in this thread.
Thanks really much but I can't see any area for participated?

Looking really great on Desktop - on Firefox and Chrome.
IE - looking very dodgy though - spaces and gaps all over the place.
Can use all browsers myself, but some corporate types might be stuck with IE.
Just a quick one (And this may be me as a noob to the new theme) but how can I tell which sub forums have unread messages in and which don't.
Here is an example of what I see when looking at the Z1 device subforum
http://prntscr.com/4jts0m
Some of those threads (Like accessories) have no unread threads in them but some do (Like general) but they look the same to me.
Once in a subforum I can tell http://prntscr.com/4jtsj8 (Arrows show read and unread thread)
Hope this helps

Good looking theme & layout. Are there plans afoot for an official "dark" version?
Great work!

One question, is there a way to hide the column at the right? I can't seem to find how. If not, I hope that you will implement it in the future.

Blue is the default chrome highlight color. I don't think we're going to override that for other drop downs because it adds more code to the page. We styled the critical areas (like the header and some post areas).

Sorry should have thought about that, Win 7 pro and IE 9 - (Business laptop and v10 and 11 are blocked from installing still - some dodgy internal issues.)
Home desktop runs 11 and that looks really awesome - so perhaps it's not something to be too concerned about!!!
Note: 'Control Panel' button was my favorite 'Home' button for xda - Is it gone permanently? I hope not!!
LOVE the size limit and scroll bars for signatures. +++++ 1000

Control panel has been renamed to Settings.
IE9 does not display a lot of styles correctly - did some website stuff myself a couple of months back on my personal site and the amount of hacks needed to support IE9 fully is unreal (especially with HTML5 and CSS3).
Some more questions/remarks:
The portal doesn't appear to have changed for me. Not sure if this is normal, but the OP mentions the portal as well.
Could some of the older icons also be redesigned (e.g.
, thread icons, smileys…)? Might be just me, but they don't look consistent with the rest of the design.
Some icons don't use a transparent background (e.g.
). This is only noticeable when the post gets highlighted, so it's pretty minor.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/subscription.php -> no sidebar, but the sidebar's space is reserved.
The spacing between the top bar (breadcrumbs) and the thread/post/group/profile is a bit off (screenshot — see red bar for spacing difference).

You could use a userstyle (with e.g. the Stylish addon):
CSS:
@Namespace url("http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml");
@-Moz-document domain("xda-developers.com"){

http://forum.xda-developers.com/subscription.php -> no sidebar, but the sidebar's space is reserved.
The spacing between the top bar (breadcrumbs) and the thread/post/group/profile is a bit off (screenshot — see red bar for spacing difference).

Thanks for this. To address some issues:
1. Portal redesign is in development and will launch when 2015 forum design is complete
2. Yes, we intend to do something about the post icons
3. Noted that sidebar is missing from /subscription.php
4. Regarding the spacing issue, can you provide URL to the page?

Sure, it happens on a bunch of pages:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=55263064 (reply to thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55263064&postcount=16 (single post view)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4775688 (profile)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/group.php?groupid=1399 (groups)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=3325 (group threads)
Avatars also seem to be taking a lot of space in group threads.
This is great! I feel like I'm the captain in charge of a spaceship. It's a lot more immersive with the new top bar. I did notice that my signature has a scroll bar. I didn't think it was that long, but it's a great idea to keep from having to scroll through some pretty massive sigs. Now where'd that pesky Thanks button go? Oh on the right...
I am on mobile now, but this is what I see.
Using chrome and request desktop site is checked. Without desktop being checked, its worse.
I can't wait to see it on my PC.
+1 for 1024 version for lappy.
Thanks for all the time invested in XDA.

@GermainZ It looks like ads aren't loading for you

Old xda portal look/subscribed threads on new forum look

How about the possibility of changing theme to the old one on the XDA portal? I'd like to change it to the old theme and layout, but there is no way to do that. I'd be fine with the new look if there would be a dark skin, but we're forced to use the default white theme. It would be nice if we could change that.
Another thing I don't like is that when u switch to the new xda forum look the quick links tab is gone, so there's no way to QUICKLY view all subscribed threads like it was possible before. That's pretty annoying...
I also found out that on the latest up-to-date chrome you can't press multi-quote. Well, you can, but it doesn't get selected like if you wouldn't press it. Thanks button works fine though. I'm talking about the new design.
Regarding the Chrome / multi-quote issue, it works fine for me using the latest Chrome.

If that's not planned, I might actually make a userstyle for it.

You can view subscribed, unread threads by clicking on "Settings" (which I think should be renamed to something better). If you want all subscriptions (even unread ones), then you're correct.

I'd love to see your userstyle. Especially for the old design as the lack of userstyle for the new xda portal is something that made me switch from your forum black version to the XDA 2015 theme.
Well, yeah, before you could view both read and unread subscribed threads, now you can't.
Does the portal not have a way to submit news tips now ?
I have an issue that I think needs to become known by all who support independent developers on Google Play.
Basically, Google's way to dealing with the EU VAT changes mean my income is dropping about 20%. (It isn't a great income to start with, despite my long hours of work.)
20% ! This sucks !
I explain in further detail in a post on General section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/dammit-google-dammit-eu-vat-policies-t3003275
