[Q] Zenfone 2 LTE speeds - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, i recently bought a zenfone 2 (WW), but there is one thing that's bothering me, the LTE speeds.
If you check this page of the Asus internation website it says that the zenfone 2 has LTE Category 4+ for download speeds up to 250Mbit/s, and it also shows the positions of all the antennas (there are 2 antennas for the sim 1, so carrier aggregation should work). (attached file #1)
This image of the US presentation confirms the support for CA 250Mbit/s. (attached file #2)
But if you switch to the specifications page it says that it is a simple category 4 150Mbit/s. Now that is what is listed on almost every web site (cat 4 150).
Another thing is the modem, in the specifications page it says it is an intel 7262, which, if you check intel's website is a category 6 300Mbit/s modem. (attached file #3)
As you can see this is quite messy, has someone figured this out? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks for the help.

All I can tell you is that higher speeds I've seen were around 70mbps with band 4.

Thanks for the answer, here in Italy i managed to get 80Mbit/s (2600/15Mhz i believe it was), but i still don't think this is 4G+, it should almost garantee speeds of 100Mbit/s and higher. Has anyone tested it in a 4G+ area?
It's really strange that no one knows anything about this, i mean, it changes by a fair amount the longevity of this phone. I think i will probably write directly to Asus to see if they know something...

No one knows?? Crazy... I will write to Asus Italy support and try find out.

Upon further investigation i found something on the TW zentalk forum:
http://www.asus.com/zentalk/tw/forum.php?mod=redirect&goto=findpost&ptid=86120&pid=401706
Looks like someone managed to get 170Mbit/s with 4G+ network (with a Z00AD), so this would confirm the cat4+ capabilities (250Mbit/s), which both the ze551ml and the ze550ml should have (having the same intel xmm 7262 modem). More detailed specifications should have been given though....

ZE500CL and T-mobile US LTE

I was wondering if anyone could help me since Asus support has told me that this phone doesn't support LTE even though the specifications sheet says that the phone supports band 2 and 4.
The phone is able to connect only for like 2 seconds to LTE, then it disconnects, then reconnects, and so on.
If I force it into using only HSPA+, then the phone functions normally.
If anyone has any advice or anything regarding my situation, I'd sincerely appreciate it. Much thanks XDA community!
I did a little more research and found that I have the WW version, whatever that means. Is it true that different versions of phones from different parts of world other than US would not function correctly?
I'm on t-mobile in NY and get 4G most places. Rarely drop down to HSPA. Might be due to your area or defective radio in your device.

4G on ZE551ML

Hi I bought my Zenfone 2 ZE551ML 1.8ghz 16gb 4gb ram from ebay and i understand mine is a CN version which does not have the full 4G band covered.
I am from UK and my carrier - giffgaff - uses 800mhz for 4G connection. The software build number ironically is WW version with newest 2.19 version installed.
So my question is, does the kernel and software locked the 4G band or is it that the chipset on the CN version does not support 800mhz band?
If it is only the software problem how would I flash it to be able to use 4G connectivity?
Honestly I would never buy from ebay again, I thought 4G ram would comes with a 2.3ghz CPU but at the end i only get 1.8ghz and 16gb.... and antutu benchmark is even lower than my previous xiaomi 3 phone which uses snapdragon 800 chipset
I was in the similar situation with mine. First and for most I recommend changing regeon from CN to WW and sideliading latest 20.97 firmware for WW. Then there is a way to "unlock" your bands, there is a thread for it here. But it may or may not work. I am stuck with H+ here in US, and honestly it does not bother me at all. Getting the phone to 20.97 made a huge difference for me as compared to the ROM that was on the phone when I got it. ( it had modded WW 19 something).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/how-to-change-4g-bands-ze551ml-t3091869 for the 4G thing, look at the last page for /local_cfg/telephony_config thing
I have also noticed that performance is better in balanced power mode for some reason.
Honestly, if you can return it, I'd suggest you do that ASAP. Others in similar situation were never able to get 4G to really work. If 4G is not important, then just live with it.

Honestly i think i will live with it. I only gets 1Gb data anyway and for me 3G is already enough.
Aside from the issue, where can i get the boost charger which can charge 60% in 30 mins?
Does intel chipset allows overclocking by the way after you root it?

Faster data=/=more data used. You dont use more data with 4g, you just acess them faster.
The charger comes with the phone ZE551 ML.
The stock one no. You need other kernels to oc/uc.
Thats true, i access data quicker...
On the otherhand, I am not familiar with android 5.0 permission. For example when I am on whatsapp and would like to record a message. The permission dialog will pops up everytime saying this app tries to use your microphone. I have ticked never show again and allow it but when I try to record the second time it pops up again. Any idea how to disable this dialog permanently? It is so annoying!

On Verizon, will it work and any links for this specific version?

Hi guys. I've been a member of XDA for some time through many phones rooting, ROMing, etc., and customizing many phones. But I haven't done anything for awhile, still rocking the Note 4, and am by far no expert. I am really looking to get my hands on the Xiaomi Mi Max 4GB 128GB dark grey version. I've never bought a phone that wasn't compatible or made for my carrier, so I need some help.
1. Does anyone know if they will get these back in stock, or am I stuck purchasing a gold one?
2. I am on Verizon. From my understanding, it will work except LTE. Do you still get 4G but not LTE? Is it a huge deal really? Can you still stream on Netflix etc, without a huge lag? I've read from some users online it wasn't a huge difference.
3. Which version do I look for, International?
4. Would it work better on AT&T? Because I am willing to switch for the phone I want. If it's the same as Verizon, no LTE, then I'll just stay with Verizon.
Thanks for any help guys. I really want this phone. I was disappointed the Note 7 is still so small. The Note 4 easily fits in my pockets, so I can't see why they won't go bigger with all the use of media and internet these days. I know some people wear skinny jeans and already have an issue with the size, but that's why they have other options like the S7.
Also looking into the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra. Will that work any better on a US network?
I'll pay you $1,000,000 if you can get Verizon to activate this phone on their network. They would never let you use any of these phones on their network.

I thought you could use it if you put in the APN and stuff, but just not get the LTE? I guess not?

They block it from accessing their network. They limit what's allowed to run on their network. I even tried my friends Verizon sim in my Mediapad X2 and Mate 8 and nope, if it's not in their whitelist it won't work. That's one of the main reasons I left Verizon a while back.
Ok, few important things to share with you.
Consider the 32gb, 3 gig ram version because it has the most development, global ROM, and possibly lower cost. I'm seduced by bigger specs models but frustrated to no end by lack of global ROM, I've got the 64 gig.
Secondly I ditched Verizon for this very reason. Lack of open network and hassles getting devices to work.
Thirdly, look at network coverage in your area, pick the better of AT&T or T-Mobile. I've gone with T-Mobile and not looked back. Speeds are good enough at H+.
Finally, Lenovo Phab Tango device with US LTE bands is about to hit the market, so research that also. ?

THANK YOU so much!!! That was awesome information. Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, seems to be the only fairly current phone over 6.3" fully compatible in the US right? I've had so many cell phones over the last 15+ years, more than 15. I've never cracked a screen. But with having such a larger screen, it concerns me a little I have not seen anything about it being Gorilla glass. Other than that I'm sold. Not that there are many choices in that size compatible in the US, but it has pretty good specs overall. I only wish for a little bigger battery and Gorilla glass. But you sold me sir. I'll be waiting for this. Guess I'll be switching to AT&T soon. Thanks!
I have the data and sms/mms working on Verizon currently. Did all the troubleshooting with them and on my own. Not your typical customer, 32 years in technology network engineering. Been fighting with them to have it added to their system. Finally someone submitted the form for me waiting to see. As for now I have my Verizon number forwarded to my Google Voice.

A new guide to see what version of 8 Pro is better in what celular company!

Ok guys! Here I found this page that clearly shows which frequencies the Oneplus 8 Pro have and easily shows on a sheet which 8 pro model is better for each carrier (cellular company. Very interesting, please see it. I hope it serves as a guide!
https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/US/oneplus-8-pro
Problem is it's you've already bought it this just winds you up!
As I've had it since launch, I didn't have most of this data then.
Now it just annoys me.
Is there anyway to allow the other bands?
The guide is decent and it is an eye opener.
Maybe worth listing here what the bands mean and which tend to be used more than others.
Here's the tables for the UK anyway..
Will let someone from the US do theirs.
Thanks for the find btw
I'm on the Three network myself.
2G doesn't exist on this network (hence the name)
3G never seen it
4G used all the time, speeds up to 100Mb it seems, this is fine for me.
5G it'll connect but it's slower than 4G
I'm based in central London, three as a network has been shambolic so far.

General Post here Radio Software /Firmware Booster info for Pixel 6 Pro

I bought this phone for several reasons, the great Camera, rootability, but Mainly for 5G and faster data. It's Rooted with .037. Since I had my years old sim in the phone all I was able to manage was about 35 Mb/second on 4G. So I headed to the ATT store and got myself a new sim card for it. On the way home I did a speed test and got 75Mb/second, 5G. Great, I thought. So when I got home I wanted to do some speed tests, and it was on 4G. I have an anntlent booster in the house due to having a metal roof. It has the following bands. each can be adjusted Individually:
LTE Band 12 Uplink (698~716MHZ) Downlink (728~746MHZ)
Band 13 Uplink (776~787MHZ) Downlink (746~757MHZ)
CELL Band 5 Uplink (824~849MHZ) Downlink (869~894MHZ)
PCS Band 2 Uplink (1850~1910MHZ) Downlink (1930~1990MHZ)
AWS Band 4 Uplink (1710~1755MHZ) Downlink (2110~2155HZ)
I turned down all the adjustment screws and took the phone outside. It connected to the PCS band 2, 5G. Took it back into the house, it was showing 1-2 bars. So I turned up the gain on band 2. The signal strength jumped up, but the phone instantly jumped to 4G. I thought it was supposed to go to 5G on a strong signal, then fall back to 4g if necessary. I tried *#*#4636#*#* and setting the phone to "nr only", but you night as well piss up a rope, the phone ignores these settings and resets itself to "unknown"
I fiddled with it some more and got a solid 5G icon. But only 5 Mbps download. For a couple hours messing around, and re pointing my antenna to another tower, I finally got a 4G signal on AWS Band 14 with 15Mbps, less than I was getting with my old 4G Sim.
I would like to see this thread developed with better Radio versions, hopefully ones that can be actually locked to what they are set on, whether it be those who want to avoid 5G or those who want to enforce 5G. 5G IS definitely faster in my rural area. Software I used to help diagnose this, and cell tower locations: Network cell info (an older version from an old phone extracted with apk extractor because the new one on google play kept crashing) Open Signal, and I tried Network Signal Guru, but it did nothing on this phone. Please post any ideas you may have concerning Radio connectivity, Booster (resetting) better software and firmware, etc.
@GivIn2It I've changed the prefix of this thread from "Development" to "General" as it didn't qualify for the first. Please review the stuck guidances at the top of the forum and do not change the prefix back.

Does AT&T even have real 5G (NR) deployment in your area? If so, is it NSA? If so, it probably uses B2 as the LTE agg link. According to the site below, ATT is supposed to be on n5/850mhz. You need to find out how ATT handles it's NSA deployment, but I guess you need to have B2 + n5 at a minimum.

Not sure if the Network Signal Guru betas are fully public yet, but they work great with the Pixel 6. No band locking though.
Contribute device capability info if you can to the cacombos site. We won't learn anything about what the Pixel 6 is capable without field testing. There's no documentation or data sheet for the "new" 5123b modem in the phone.

Thanks for that info. Apparantly, there is some aggregation going on. When the phone switches to 5G, none of the software including the Phone Info page will detect what band it's using. Phone info does show NR Available: True and NR State: Not_Restricted.

It looks like my device has already been added to the Cacombos database. I can't find a link to that beta. do you have one?
It doesn't matter if your device is already listed. It's incomplete.
And I don't believe I can share the alphas or betas.

OK, then. How am I supposed to obtain that device capability information to upload to Cacombos, I don't have software capable of obtaining all that information from the phone. I'm willing to share information if you're willing to share the software that can obtain the information.
Please read the Shannon instructions. You don't need NSG or other tools.
The "Shannon instructions", could you be a little less specific?

Problem is this, not sure the instructions are compatible:
This works with Shannon modem devices except Samsung Exynos device (eg. Pixel 6 and 6 Pro). For Samsung, please use Exynos internal logging by exposing modem to Scat, ShannonDM or Airscreen. Require root.
Open terminal with adb shell or with Terminal app.
Start logging with in superuser (su)$ su
# modem_logging_control START
Turn on Airplane mode and wait for 5-10 seconds. Turn off Airplane mode.
End logging with command# modem_logging_control STOP
You can find logging file now in `/data/vendor/slog`

Instructions under "Samsung device" references OneUI shortcodes which won't work with the PX6/P
It works. The wording is incorrect. It works for non-Samsung Exynos devices.
This is how we gathered the combos until NSG started working.
But the reason why we need more data is because one report from one phone only reflects the country they're in and what their carrier supports.
It's like cellmapper, more data is better.
I think I have figured out the problem. The Pixel 6 Pro doesn't like it when I have all my gains all the way up, at least for 5G. When I set the bands CELL Band 5 Uplink (824~849MHZ) Downlink (869~894MHZ) and
PCS Band 2 Uplink (1850~1910MHZ) Downlink (1930~1990MHZ) to a little over halfway, the phone regularly connects to 5G, especially when downloading. The signal icon on the phone varies between 2 and 4 bars. Download speeds about 2- 15 Mb/s, which is about a third of my better 4G speeds. But I get to see a pretty 5G icon on my Phone. Superb! My next step is to buy a honkin Yagi to replace my pathetic one, and do some signal searching to see if I can pull in that 75Mb/second tower. If that doesn't work, It's just wait for ATT to improve their 5G here, as I have determined that the Pixel 6 Pro is (mostly) working correctly out of the box, it is looking for the best signal, and if that's 4G, that is what it will switch to. Being more of a hardware guy, I think I can accomplish more with external equipment than I can monkeying with the guts of the phone. Rooting was scary enough. But I'm still open to flashing a better radio, when someone comes up with one.
