I have a problem that i have tried to google but haven't came up with any results, maybe i'm asking the wrong way but this is a big issue for me personally.
some contacts i have (eg John) uses to mobile numbers, a personal and business.
i send text messages to both of his numbers depending the time of day and what the messages are concerned.
htc stock text message app compiles both these numbers under the same thread under the same contact name.
so basically when i go into the message thread, i'm seeing messages that i send to his personal and business number.
i can select to view which number for John the messages sent and received but sometimes it gets confusing, not used to
is there a way where i can have 2 John message threads when i get into the stock text message app? as this way will help me determine on what number am i sending to and keep the business to business and personal to personal.
i can't find any setting for that within the app and still have not come across this topic when tried to google
**besides using another 3rd party app like 'GO SMS' is there a way to solve this?

Please save a poor woman from getting unwanted texts
I run a junior football squad.
One of the 'soccer mums' originally gave me a wrong mobile number starting 07940 ... which resulted in a poor woman getting lots of texts from me.
I corrected the number on the contact to 07540 ...
If I send a text directly the text goes to 07540 ...
If I reply to a text from 07540... the text actually goes to the 07940 number
If I try and dial 07940... then it comes up with no suggested numbers/contacts. When I receive a text from the poor pestered woman it still comes up with the contact name.
So. I tried deleting the contact (John Smith) and recreated it using a different name (John S). I can no longer find a John Smith in my contacts (even when ticking all the sources to look in - GMAIL, FBOOK etc).
However Gesture Search still finds a John Smith somewhere I have refreshed the index and even reinstalled gesture search but it still finds a John Smith.
Also the SMS thread containing a variety of the 07540 and 07940 numbers all now say they are from JOHN S.
Im confused but the woman receiving rogue texts is getting very p****d off.
Anyone ???
Is it possible that the rogue number is synchronised to your Gmail account, so even if you delete it, it will resync to your phone? Check your gmail account for that number.
Also go to the good number and make sure it's not linked to the rogue one.
Tried that. The contact john smith isn't on my gmail at all. The only place I can find it is using gesture search
Worst come to worst, Settings > Privacy >Factory data reset.
have you tried changing the default number in use in the people app?
I received a text messages the other day from a friend who changed their number but of course I forgot to store it before flashing a new ROM, which wiped everything out. Sprint claims the only way to retrieve the text message log is with a subpoena but I remember when I was on Verizon, it was provided through my bill and online account. Does anyone know of a work around to get this info? TIA!
Nope, with Sprint it's subpeona only.
I'd recommend SMS Backup+ for your future protection. Very handy app that keeps all your texts backed up to Gmail.
if all you're looking for is the number that texted you, you can go to your account and look at the text message log and find your friends number, only thing is that you can't view the message within the text if that's what you're planning to do
How about the Nandroid Backup you made before flashing the new ROM

Where on the website do you go to view your texting log? I've never noticed that feature... The bill detail only displays voice numbers?
they will give you an excel format list of texts, just the number time and date, not the content of the text

i have done it, quick turn around

so ive tried handcent, gosms and pansi and all seem to have the same problem.
When ever i try to send a group text message i get an undelivered error message. Now weather its because a contacts number is incorrect or what ever other reason no one else in the group will get the message.
Is there a limit to how many recipients i can send a message? On my evo i couldnt add any more than 40.
This is getting rather frustrating especially being that i am pass my 14 day trial period on this phone. Im starting to think i shouldve waited for the HTC One to come out
Try Group SMS free. It allows you to send through your normal carrier or a Google voice account....which is free texting. I use it all the time!
Hope this helps.
ok ive downloaded the app mentioned but cant figure out how to forward a message. I tried copying from the phones messenger app but wont let me paste, and this app wont allow me to view my messages.
I seem to be having a random problem with my GS3. For random contacts my SMS will create multiple threads for the same person and it gets annoying because I will have like 20 different threads for the same conversation. I tried searching but didn't come up with anything and was just wondering if this is something that has a fix or if its something that I just can't do anything about. Thanks.
I see this happen when I have a ton of messages, with that contact or otherwise. Try emptying your inbox and starting with a clean slate
I have this same issue with just ONE person. And we have no messages between eachother. It does it on a totally stock restored phone...
It seems to me that the sms program doesn't consolidate phone numbers with the International prefix with those that don't have the prefix. If you have multiple syncing with different services it can have variations of the same numbers. This can be exacerbated by people who have multiple mobile phones or things like Google or skype numbers.
I have to sit down and consolidate all my contacts because I have way too many valid instances of a large number of them.

Mine did this when I restored SMS using SMS backup+... after installing a new ROM and receiving some texts immediately after the install. I ended up with pre-restore and post restore threads for from the same person, instead of SMS backup simply adding the old messages to the existing thread.

I also have a lot of friends who uses different numbers to send sms from...and how hard can it be to fix google?! Just use contacts instead of numbers to locate what thread the sms should go in?!!?!
One workaround is to install contacts+. The have figured out how to solve this but not google?!
Typing handycent and go sms here to so they might find this thread and copy contacs+ in this matter
I have older relatives who do email but not text messaging, so I've enabled them to text me by putting a "mailto" link on their desktop that uses a provider's SMS gateway. As an example, for a verizon owner, if I set up this mailto it would address the email to "[email protected]". In this way, my older relatives can text me by just sending an email. This works pretty well all around.
However, I'm finding that the text messages I get have a 10-digit number in the "from" field, and even with messages from the same person, that number is always different, although it appears to increment. As an example, I sent myself three text messages in a row via email, and the number in the From incremented by one each time.
These messages won't thread obviously because the From field is always different, which is a little irritating but I'm more curious about how this is working than anything else right now.

I've always had this issue but don't use it often. I never figured out how to fix it. Have you tried a different app ? Not that it would matter but maybe its sending programs issue and not the phones
