Game Performance (Thinking of Selling) - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I bought the 551 version with 2gb ram and 16gb memory a few days ago. So far the experience has been good. I'm just having problems running the game I regularly play, Crusaders Quest. It slows down to a crawl at times specially if I don't reboot my phone. I'm thinking it's a ram problem. Maybe I should get the 4gb ram one? Or it won't make a difference? Or is it the limitations of the GPU? Should I just switch to the nexus 5 instead?
Appreciate if you guys would chime in before I decide to sell the phone over the weekend. Thanks.

I bought the 551 with 4 gig RAM, and 64 gig HDD. I came from the note 4 edge and haven't looked back. If you let me know what games specifically you are playing I can test them out, but this phone hasn't even broken a sweat for anything I need it to do.

should be related to memory leak in android 5.0.1.. 2gb ram was never enough if memory leak is not fixed..4gb version still can manage and handle the leak, no solution so far unless you root it and install xposed fix memory leak module which also helped me in my case..other than that, just wait till asus push higher version of android such as 5.1 that was said to have better memory management..

Thanks for the explanation. Didn't know a about that since my last android device was kitkat and it was a tablet.

just tried it on my 4gb 1.83ghz zenfone 2. zero lag with the game, but boy that in game graphic is terrible.

Thanks a lot man. Haha. You mean by terrible, the graphics look like 8bit Gameboy or whatnot? It's really like that and I like games like that. Did you go to the actual battle?

Could be throttling due to temps. Its highly unlikely this game is slowing down due to RAM/GPU/CPU unless the device is throttling. What's your ambient temperature there?

It's around 40 degrees Celsius here. So you really think it's not a ram problem? When I run the game I can't even multi task. If I leave the app when I go back to it, it relaunches.

Yea. That's hot, man. Your phone is likely throttling.
The issue with it closing when multitasking is a Asus kernel setting issue. Check your free RAM. I don't believe its a 5.0 leak issue. The leak manifests itself differently than this.
The 4gb version will help with apps closing, but not with the throttling. The Zenfone 2 is beyond powerful enough to run this game.

40°C is still cool enough..i think i remember that i read somewhere before, zenfone kernel started to throttle cpu when it reach 55°c, correct me if im wrong..but unlike my samsung S3, when using lollipop custom rom the temperature usually stays on 40-47°C while using the phone, so phone like this powerful zf2 should not have any problem even on 40°C..but just my two cent yet, anything can be a problem on this phone, unless they update in to newer lollipop and unlock BL so developer may help to improve the kernel and rom level of zf2..

its the problem of low free ram only, dont worry.I guess after updating to latest 5.1 x64bit lollipop...it wont have ram issues hopefully, and this prob only in 2gb,4gb can easily kill anyother phone interms of multitasking

Yes, you'll have far fewer RAM issues with 4gb. I thought you were having other issues, according to your OP.

yes, can't stand that 8bit graphic, didn't even want to get into the actual battle because of the graphic...the phone itself is fine.

I do find this phone heats up more than others I've used....would like to find a custom back, something that would allow greater airflow for gaming. If you play a heavy game, just pop the case off and let the extra airflow through.

Hi All, I was playing contest of champion from kabam, my problem is that when I just launch the game it look really nice in full HD graphic, and after 2 games when the heat goes up, no more HD , and when play after about 1/2 hour the graphic start choppy or even stuck in some point. anyone having the same problem ? Thanks

This might be because zf2 has 64-bit processor running with 32-bit lollipop......32-bit won't handle 64-bit efficiently
Sent from my ASUS_Z00AD using XDA Free mobile app

According to anandtech's review, the Zenfone 2 is not affected by throttling issues. Maybe the game you want to play is not x86 friendly and the slowdowns are because of binary translation (ARM emulation).

it's not 32bit lollipop, CPU Z clearly says the kernel is 64 bit. plus, how can a 32bit OS manage 4 gb of RAM?

It could.
That said yes, it's a 64b version. Even about phone will show x86_64.
40C Yep, ambient temp and that's HOT -> phone starts OUT AT 40C, so pretty much ANY stress on it's going to hit thermal throttling PDQ.

RFS filesystem

Hello I had read about the problem of stalling. In the OCLF thread, I read that this is due to the RFS used.
BTW anyone can verify if this is still the problem in Android 2.2 build.
Thanks.

Still rfs in the leaked froyo builds; no one can verify what the official build will be like, because it hasn't been released yet.
Seems pretty unlikely that samsung would consider a change in fs for the i9000 at this stage in it's development. I think manufacturers like to stick to their own proprietary fs...

No device is perfect. Most problems are fixable, I think. If Samsung doesn't do it, I'm sure the talented developers in this forum will do something - that's the beauty of Android..
the voodoo kernel puts the phone to rights. with that fix, its the fastest thing on the market.
it's just a shame only a small minority of users will see the benefit and the phone will ultimately fail because of this.

True that no device is perfect, but for the money we pay to purchase such a device, we expect a product that works out-of-the-box, which is not the case for the Galaxy S.
Compared to the hardware Samsung put into it, its shockingly laggy and other phones in the market with half the hardware specs dont show such lag due to the tweaked software they have
A mobile phone is not just a piece of hardware, its the hardware with its software that enables the optimum use of the hardware and also the accompanying PC software where Samsung has yet failed through the horribel "Kies"
I am a big fan of android, but Samsung has tarnished android through this ****ty product
This will be clearly seen once a pure android 2.2 OS (with no samsung software on top) is available for the SGS with the proper file system and memory manager
There are 2 problems with the phone.
1. File System
2. Memory
File system can be fix by using lag fix. After you implement lag fix, you feel phone is snappy and fast and you start running and install tons of apps.
This started the 2nd problem, even though is 512MB ram, most you get is 200Meg usable, however with some background service it reduces to 130 on average. After few hours of apps used or longer time the available memory can drop down to 30Meg. This is when you feel the 2nd lag. Even with 80Meg ram available you will still feel lag, and swype start behaving funny.
This can only be solve or temp fix (some people say you shouldn't) if you use softwares like ATK, SystemPanel Apps. (Just KILL THEM ALL) when you feel your phone start to slow down and your phone will than be alive!!!
The real fix for the memory issue.. unfortunately.. i believe we need a phone with minimum 6 to 700MB free RAM. Than you should feel the phone responsive all the time until all the apps start clogging up the usable RAM.
I understand where you're coming from, regarding this. However, being somewhat of a tech freak, I am quite happy that so many tweaks have been developed by the experts here in this forum - my Galaxy S works well enough for me, rooted and sped up with the one-click-lagfix app.
My experience so far with Android on the Galaxy S (shortcomings and all) has generally been way better than my previous experiences with S60v5 on the Nokia 5800 and N97.

I haven't had these problems for a long time, actually using a taskkiller makes it slower for me. Since JM* it's not possible anymore to have only 30Megs free as the least low memory killer level starts at around 40 Megs which turns into having 50ish free all the time. The only time i get lags is when installing apps but otherwise never with loads of apps installed. I use the oneclick lagfix btw.
The filesystem choice is not wise from samsung, the hardware and software interaction are because samsung is using Hummingbird processor and that google developed android to improve it on snapdragon because the nexus one is running it and most of the andro phones. So samsung has to "fix" android for their processor.
For the memory "issues" like I said on another topic
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
Linux however isn’t generally affected by this. While I admit that I don’t know the architecture and reason for this… linux will run the same regardless of if you have 20mb free memory or 200mb.

Defective Ion?

Not sure if this is just how the phone is or if mine's defective. If anyone isn't having the following issues PLEASE reply so I can call up Sony and hopefully get a new one if this isn't the norm.
-Phone gets pretty hot, I know the phone's back is metal but it's hot enough to worry about imo. Happens when I've got a large file downloading or playing games like Modern Combat 3. Just to note I kill all background tasks quite often and especially before playing a game.
-Touch screen is buggy and requires a hard reset to fix. After MC3 crashing twice on me my screen became nearly unresponsive and if it did register anything it'd bug out.
-When listening to music it sorta drops out every once in a while, equivalent to a CD skipping? Idk how else to really put it.
Thanks in advance!
Well over heating is common in android phones. Mines reach 49 degrees Celsius while playing minecraft. But for the other issues, they seem like memory issues

btw, don't use any task killers. they won't help but only mess up the way your phone works.

ram after 4.1

After I updated my phone to 4.1 i'm only showing 1.56GB of ram in the task manager app. Has anyone else had this problem?
I did notice that I lost a large chunk of free ram... 4.0.4, I used to consistently have about 1 gig free, now I stay around 500-600 megs free
I've noticed this with any 4.1 rom with touchwiz and bloatware.
It's much better using a custom 4.1 TW rom (bacon!!) with some bloatware removed.

I sent an email to Samsung just now. Let's see what they say.
Anyway, this is def. NOT natural. If you bring up a terminal console and type "free" you will see it state that your phone only has 1.5 gigs of ram.
I'm wondering of project butter is using 500 megs of ram to do the speedup we're seeing...

My take-away is that they did, in fact, use the extra 512megs for a new application that is part of the enhancement. My guess is butter.
Its most likely just the system using that RAM, like pretty much every android phone on the planet

Wow. Big difference. I'm seeing the same.
I never thought 2GB would get so low available so quick.
Who cares, really?
I'd rather have my 2Gb completely filled up as it's most likely just cached applications anyway.
If need be, this memory will be released anyway by Android's garbage collector.
On the other hand, history shows us that every new iteration of Android needs more RAM, so that's kinda expected.
My GS1 only has 512Mb which is more than enough if running Android 2.x (Eclair, Froyo & Gingerbread) but rapidly falls short RAM if running ICS.

free memory is waisted memory for some. I disagree when it comes to devices using a battery. Processes use memory and battery life...
I hate to see apps running in background even when I didn't use them since the last reboot. Self running apps grabbing infos about me suck. If Google dont want to stop these behaviors then its time for a new OS.

Cached apps in memory do not actually run.
They are just left there so that they can start more quickly the next time you use them.

RAM has to refresh whether it is used or not. The RAM has no idea if a particular bit is used or not.
The last ICS update also lowered the RAM to 1.59GB. I believe it has to do with how much RAM is assigned to the GPU. It is normal.

[Q] Why is the performance so poor?

I don't understand how a phone so powerful can run so poorly. Often times it may take up to 5 seconds to respond to input and is extremely laggy. My friends iPhone 4 is more responsive and it is kind of embarrassing when I am always talking so highly of Android devices, and a 2 year device with incredibly inferior specs is outperforming a brand new high-end phone. There also seems to be an enormous lack of development. I am really starting to regret purchasing this phone.

I agree that G3 performance is bad. Its because the system in chip had to draw all the extra pixels of a QHD display. It causes lag and slowness everywhere.
The QHD display needs a more powerful system on chip.

Its got nothing to do with the QHD screen. The processor is more than capable of rendering QHD in 2D, even 4K wouldnt be a problem.
The problem is LG have very badly optimised the software. The latest revisions are much much faster, Im using v10J and everything is instant. We went through the same problems with the G2.

I've seen it happen on old phones of mine that tried to render 1080 but struggled. You get the stutter effect and frame rate dropping because it can't draw it quickly enough. This is a good comparison video too of the more powerful 805 chip Vs the 801 chip

Clearly thats not the case since I have absolutely zero lag. Its a fact that the GPU isnt stressed in 2D by the QHD, it doesnt even throttle past 330mhz. The 801 is rated for 4K, and only then limited by bandwidth rather than raw power.
Its all about the LG software. It will improve.
I have zero lag with my processor downclocked to 1.5ghz and 200 mhz GPU
So all this QHD resolution causing lag is complete BS and trolling.

Have to disagree,I see no improvement with 10j. Its very obvious the 801 is maxed out.

This chip is not maxed out at all, let's not spread false information please. LG needs to optimize the software for the phone to run correctly. I have enabled 60fps on my phone, and the thing flies now. No lag while scrolling, or while gamingto speak of. The chip has no problems with the resolution.
The thing with Iphone is the way it's set up, Android has more things working in the background eating up ram/etc, that's why optimization is so important. Put an 801 chip into the Iphone, which has MUCH less things running in the background by default, and I guarantee you that the phone will run much faster than with the A7 chip.
Also, rogue apps that are not optimized correctly can also cause serious lag. I recently had the HTC One M8, which ran beautifully, until I downloaded a rogue app that was eating up ram when not in use, and my phone was lagging like crazy.
So it's not really fair to compare android with ios's speed, because all Iphone devices work the same way, and use the same chip. While on Android, there are many factors and apps that can interfere with the OS. Any true Android fan should know how these things work..you can customize the phone to your liking, but you also have to deal with rogue apps and ram issues sometimes.
Have to agree that the 801 struggles with 2k, use a 1080 801 flagship and you'll see the difference. The frame rate on some games is poor in the G3 compared to 1080 801 phones and that's nothing to do with software. The QHD is also power hungry and runs hotter and thermal throttles the CPU more.

Exactly, this chip is more then capable of running the high resolution on the G3. LG should have taken the time to calibrate the software to run better, but the newer updates going around are based off of the info here from XDA users. The default battery saving technique to dynamically adjust the fps/etc only saves a little more batter, but is not worth the tradeoff of a stuttering device. LG should have put in a bigger battery and increased the phone size a little instead of setting up the phone the way it currently is. People are too obsessed with thin phones now-a-days, I prefer a little bulk with MUCH better battery life!
---------- Post added at 07:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:43 PM ----------
Also, just to add on to the info that the 801 cannot handle the 2K resolution, which is false..I had the HTC One M8, which oddly stuttered like crazy when playing Asphalt 8, and a few other highly graphical games, but ran smooth as butter when scrolling through apps/etc. However, my G3 has Zero problems now running the same games. So clearly, it's more at play than just the 801. It's more about optimization/etc.
I have pretty much zero lag, the only stutter I see is when pulling down the notification bar, but that happens literally every time I do it. Anybody experiencing the same? Rooted 32gb D855 10g.

I had that happen to me every now and then, until I switched from Dalvik to ART. Now I have zero lag when using the notification bar. Try that and see if it helps.

Thanks, but I'm using Xposed framework and as far as I know, it's not ART compatible yet :/ I'll keep it ind mind, though.

@MRCANNADY how can i enable the 60fps? i read about some people saying this but i didnt find anything about how to do this, can you help me?

To give you an idea of the advances LG will likely make I recently flashed my G2 back to the original ROM. It was terrible, laggy, jittery, horrible camera lag. I then updated to the latest. Smooth, lag free, faster camera, totally reliable. This will happen for the G3 to.
QHD has nothing to do with the issues at all. Its quite clear LG released this phone in almost a panic about heat and battery life, with so many unnecessary measures taken. I disabled quite a lot of them and its smooth and the battery lasts longer than any phone ive had before, even my G2. I wonder if half the screens issues are due to LG undervolting it. Most mods for other devices undervolt the screen to save power, I want to try the opposite.

Oh yes, it's not compatible as of now. ART really does make a difference in how the phone works though. It's actually the first time that I have seen how beneficial ART is. Question, do you have any widgets in your notification shade/etc? You could also try using the Nova launcher and see if that helps.

Hello there
Follow the instructions below. Also, scroll down to Dynamic LCD refresh On/Off, and select disable. Then under Fixed FPS test, select 60FPS, reboot and enjoy!

The problem is LG have very badly optimised the software. The latest revisions are much much faster, Im using v10J and everything is instant. We went through the same problems with the G2.

So what about non d855 users. I have the T mobile variant and it seems we are waiting on Android L for an update as there hasnt been any incremental performance updates. I agree the software is not all it could be.
I use Nova launcher and don't see any lag.
When I was using the stock launcher, I thought that I would see some delay here and there, But I wasn't really sure if it was the phone or me believing what other people were writing.
But I did use the settings in the linked post and it seemed to make the stock launcher much faster. I do not know if it will affect your issue.

No not that i am aware of.... i also have the same specs as urs... So maybe there is sumthin on ur phone which is eating a lot of ram... First check the ram usage by apps... try freezing the bloatware... If this doesn't work try clearing cache via adb... If nothing of this works we will have to dig deeper

Have not faced any sort of lag since i bought mine, 4GB 2.3Ghz user here. Have you tried running Antutu benchmark to see if it completes all the test without any issues and also to see if the score is inline with other ZF2 users.

i have enough ram available. .and i also boost every now and then i used my z2. .would u mind if u install nba 2k15 and tell me if u would experience the same issue i have. . i read some forums and threads about the lag issue and also see GL tools, but most of the solution i see is u should definitely ROOT ur phone . . my phone is only 2weeks old, and not sure if i'll back it to the store or in my own risk root this and do the ****ty customization of my phone.(that will void the warranty - actually im a little bit confused if the warranty will be void if i root my phone *talking about software* e how about if the hardware will be the problem is the warranty will not be covered if i found out that this will be the problem or maybe i should call back the store for verification and for my concerns hehe) BTW Thanks i really appreciate ur suggestions

First try to contact the store and ask them about lagging issues and all...if u dont feel satisfied with their answers try to get it replaced as warranty is for both hardware and software... Btw rooting ur phone will void ur warranty but if u flash the stock rom back u get ur warranty back... But my suggestion is first try to solve it by calling the store from where u purchased it and of still not satisfied call Asus and get ur device replaced under warranty....
Not at all. CPU is clocked at 500MHz for most of the time anyway and rarely needs to clock too high during usage except for gaming.
In fact, I've even capped my CPU max frequency at 1.8GHz even though I own the 2.3GHz version.
The recent update made my 2GB variant even faster from my initial impressions. Battery seems to be draining less too.
4 GB 1.8GHz here and absolutely no lag. Running smooth at any time.

I have not faced anything of such concern cuz i haven't played any high end game like asphalt , nova all i have played is hitman sniper which runs perfectly and gives me better performance than note 3 also in terms of battery . U might have not disabled apps in auto start manager
Absolutely no lags..even after last OTA update battery isnt draining with same rate as earlier and phone "speeded" up more..about that heating issue, its cuz of fast charging. Use a normal charger and there would be not that much heating it will just warm up little like any device
I will lag a bit just after charging, but mostly when I charge for 30 minutes and the phone is still warm. For those who are having lag or stutter....is your battery life bad? I bet you have an app or game that is constantly drawing on the cpu/gpu....
Mine is laggy but only when Here Maps or Waze are open, and a little while after I close them. During normal use it's a bit laggy, but I have several things running in the background... that's probably it (Facebook, Twitter, Google Now, Swarm, etc.)

I am also facing a bit of frame drops, not lags though. But stutters for sure. Its been only 4 days that i have bought this phone. My phone is on latest firmware. Asphalt 8 shows great amount of stutters and overkill 3 is full of lag. Should i be concerned. I keep almost all my back ground apps closed and have more than 2gb of ram free. Tried formating the phone too.
Lagging
My zf2 4gb 2.3ghz lags . I have checked RAM it is always more than 1gb free but still lags don't know why? Latest ota updated
