M8 converted to GPE - cannot update OTA to 5.1 - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I have successfully converted my international HTC M8 to GPE. From what I was reading, changing the CID should have been enough for the phone to be recognised as a real GPE for OTA updates.
Unfortunately when I try to install the update received OTA, the phone gets stuck on n error message after the reboot, during the update installation, and I can only wait for it to restart to hard reset the phone.
Any idea?
Cheers!

You also need the stock recovery, and an unmodified system partition. That means uninstall any Xposed modules through Xposed itself, and uninstall Xposed itself. It modifies /system
You can pull the stock recovery from you OTA.zip by transfering it your PC and opening it with 7zip. Unzip the firmware.zip. The recovery.img is in there. Put it into your fastboot folder and hook up you phone to your PC.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot.
Then try the OTA again

[Q] Need Help restoring to Stock

I have an Unlocked HTC One M8
it is the malaysian version so reads "HTC One_M8x" occasionally
CID is HTC_621
i am on software # 3.28.709.6
i am having difficulties restoring to stock, all RUU's from htc or any third party fail
due to either incorrect model id, or signing failure. As well as using any OTA's.
I went from stock in this order.
>Unlocked Bootloader from htc-dev
>Installed TWRP
>Installed SuperSU
> Backed up my rom
-did this under the assumption root is okay with OTA's
> Then i attempted to S-Off, turns out the malaysian version is not supported by
Sunshine S-off yet.
>Following all of this i found out Lollipop was released for my phone.
>I proceeded to revert my phone to the backup in TWRP
>Relocked my bootloader.
>Then i installed a stock recovery, i am not at a point where i recieve and download the OTA but am
uunable to install it, the process begins and then red triangles.
I have tried manually doing the OTA's via ADB
i have tried both a 4.4.4 kkitkat RUU for unlocked HTC M8, and the one for 5.0 lollipop HTC M8
neither pass and say model id is incorrect
If anyone has had these issues and knows a way to fix it, or has the same phone as me
and has links or files i would greatly appreciate it, till then i guess im stuck with 4.4.4.
any questions just ask! And thankyou ahead of time!
Why lock bootloader? More importantly, why lock bootloader before you even flashed back the recovery?
There are no RUU's(As far as I know) for Asian Models, only for WWE International(Not widely/freely available though) and definitely only for US Variants(Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, Developer Edition & Verizon). Of course the RUU's won't work on your device, you'd need to change the MID of the device or SuperCID(Need S-OFF for both).
Did your stock recovery flash back? Boot into recovery and make sure you have stock recovery flashed back. No need to lock bootloader, only time you need to do that is when you manually flash firmware or for the RUU(Both instances ONLY IF you are S-ON).
If you don't have stock recovery, unlock again and flash stock recovery.

Ok then try the OTA update again, when you get the error press Volume UP and Tap the power button to view the installation log. It'll tell you there what the reason is it won't install.

Looks like you have developer edition on there, BrightStar US is Developer Edition. So yes, make sure you have stock HTC TW ROM/Recovery on there and try again.

Tell me exactly what the state of your device is when you look at your bootloader.

I too had this issue, for me it was as simple as restoring a stock Nandroid backup I found on here, as my backup wouldn't work.

Also, I know it's obvious, but make sure your bootloader is re-locked!

That last photo shows you have modified your system partition. You won't be able to take the OTA with /system modified. Are you using Xposed? If you are, you need to open Xposed and uninstall any modules you have, then uninstall Xposed itself.

And this is obviously a wrong advise.
There is no need to relock bootloader for OTA.
Relocked bootloader is needed only for installing RUU and manual firmware flashing on S-On device.
I see your device is S-Off, you can try to install a RUU, keep in mind that your RUU must match your CID, but you can change your CID always if you want. I have superCID so I can install every RUU file.
thanks guys
i haven't installed exposed, but i think i installed sun plus o turn S-ON to S-OFF
i wish i could install original OTA.
i already relocked my bootloader.
so the only option for me is to install via RUU, is there anyway or a chance to use OTA udates and remove modified system ?

Let's not confuse the ota with a full ruu. So my question is :
1: did you flash the ruu (full rom update utility)
2: flashed the ota (smaller size file, pure update to the existing software)
?
I had the same problem as the OP..So i tried to restore just the system from my back up using CWM..Now im stuck at the HTC logo screen after the reboot. Im not sure what to do.
That wasn't the ota you just flashed. That was an RUU which completely wipes everything. I hope you realise it's also wiped your internal memory too?

I couldnt flash the OTA...I got the red exclamation. So I tried to restore the system (using advanced restore)because I had put up the adblock. After which I was stuck in the loading screen.
Anyway I did a complete restore and flashed the stock recovery. Now its updating from the Eye Update.
Thanks for the quick reply though!
. .
Why are you relocking bootloader while you're S-OFF?
Relocking bootloader for flashing RUU is needed only on S-ON devices.

Help! Restore to stock, lots of issues

I have a Htc One M8 ; s-off, hboot 3.16, running 4.4.2. CID is Roger001, unlocked boot
Problem I have is I'm trying to restore the phone to stock because I want to do OTA updates. I followed the guide to return Canadian HTC1m8 to stock - downloaded the nandroid backup, restored it, flashed a stock image through fastboot;
However, now if I try a OTA it just reboots my phone and normally stalls out on the HTC screen. Nothing gets updated . If i try a factory reset, same thing, and it won't boot into bootloader until I wait a while then restart it. My data won't work anymore and TWRP recovery has disappeared. I think my issue is i flashed the wrong recovery .img, I'm a fairly noob. Checked all the related links and can't figure it out.
Any help would be amazing.

I got an update to work, I think I had the wrong stock installed so it wouldn't work properly. Only thing now is my data isn't working, any assistance with that that could be??
Instead of trouble shooting, I would just flash this TWRP backup tested to work on Rogers M8:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58611288
See end of 1st post in above link.
It is already in lollipop. No OTA update needed.
Use latest TWRP recovery, see 2nd post in above link.

problem during update 2.10.401.8

I am running 1.40.401.8 and i'm trying to update my phone to 2.10.401.1 using the new OTA update, but after 3 times I keep running into this error:
Verifying current system...
/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.l/by-name/system has been remounted R/W; reflash device to reenable OTA updates
plaese help
If you are rooted or flashed anything via custom recovery (or even just mounted /system r/w), then you can't install OTA updates without restoring a stock untouched system image and the stock recovery.
See this post for more details.

Hey i had the same problem as you after some hours of trying i got the problem solved, you just need to download this ruu.zip file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347759368 . Download this file and follow Instruction : rename it too "OPJAIMG" and put it on the root of your external sdcard. Next power down your phone and boot into bootloader your device should automatically detect the rom and ask you if you want to flash it or not for that click volume up button and let your phone do the work. when finish you will be good to go reconfigure your phone and check for software update, download let it install and enjoy
Sorry for the late reply.
As stated above, you can flash a RUU, but that will wipe your data. It's probably the simplest way to get back to complete stock for an OTA though.
If you don't want to lose data, there are stock TWRP backup files and stock recovery images in this thread.
I believe you also have to relock your bootloader if you're S-ON as well. I may be wrong on that point though as I'm new to HTC devices myself.

No you cannot. Bootloader must be locked (not relocked) and everything must be as stock (except s-off).

There is no need to lock/relock. Your system has to be not-rooted and mount as read-only. If you flash TWRP or install SuperSu it's mounted as read/write. Easiest way for you to recover the abiltity to install OTAs is flashing a RUU (if there is one for you actual firmware version). Boot to Download Mode and look at the line with OS at the beginning. Then search for a RUU that has the same version or a higher version. Only the SKU (= the number behind the second dot) has to be same. If the RUU you need is an *.exe then boot your phone to Download Mode, connect it to your PC, disable your internet connection (just for safety reasons), your firewall and your antivirus software (bith can interfere with a RUU) and execute the file as an admin. If the RUU is a *.zip then rename it to 0PJAIMG.zip, place it in the root directory of a SD card that is not bigger than 32gb and formatted to fat32, put the card into your phone, reboot to Download Mode and flash the file by pushing the volume up button.

My Developer Edition M9 was shipped with the bootloader unlocked, with 5.0 (1.32.617.30), and it received the OTA updates to 5.1 (2.11.617.15) just fine.
Thanks everyone
