GSM or CDMA help?

I have a t-mobile touch pro 2 from htc and i dont know if it is GSM or CDMA, how do you check? im a noob at this so i wouldnt know.. Also is living in american version different from overseas version of the phone for t-mobile?

t-mobile would be GSM
the US version would be locked to US t-mobile and i dont think you would be able to use it internationally without unlocking first

That means that you can ONLY use your TP2 on the US T-Mobile Network, unless you unlock the sim. And yes T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 is GSM.

T-Mobile anywhere worldwide is GSM, not CDMA. (Verizon and Sprint...and a few others are CDMA).
However, the version of TP2 released/branded by T-Mobile USA is different -- with somewhat different radio hardware -- than what is used in Europe.
It will definitely work on the EDGE-speed GSM networks in Europe...but not as sure about the 3G-speed bands.

That's not quite true...it's only true if you want to put a non-T-MoUSA sim card in your phone. I've taken my previous (not TP2) T-MoUSA phones to Europe more than once and they work and access the networks fine. It's just that you have to pay international roaming charges...but it definitely works.
T-Mobile international data roaming charges in most places in the GSM world are $15 per megabyte...so that's pretty steep for web browsing, but not bad for mostly-text e-mail which is typically only a few kilobytes per e-mail.
Charges for international voice calls are quite high, too. That's why some people who plan to make local calls -- e.g., to call a Rome number while in Rome -- (or use a lot of data) get a local/European/whatever sim card...and that's the situation for which you need to have the sim-unlock done.

Run these two cabs (I also recommend running and archiving all cabs you use, in a folder on your SD card)....they're the official "welcome basket" for all new TP2 owners
Together they help clear up memory management issues the TP2 has, which you would see the negative effects of rather quickly.
The first one turns off internet pre-caching (a waste of resources with little or no benefit), and the second one lets the phone free up memory better when apps are done using it.

Nope, that's just one more tool that can help, it just may not need to lend as much of a hand after you run those.

Read the first post of "Flashing your first GSM Rom..." thread -- and associated HardSPL thread -- carefully.
That's the most important thing you can do before flashing custom rom.

If you got the phone directly from HTC, it is probably the international verson that works with the European T-Mobile high speed network. Does the box it came in say "T-Mobile" or "HTC"?
But it is definitely GSM.
Is it unlocked?

altered at the firmware level to allow it to work with sim cards from other carriers. It's something you have to do or pay somebody to do for you, so if you did neither, then it's still "sim-locked"

Not a big deal, don't sweat it...that has no bearing on flashing radios or roms, only matters if you want to use it on a carrier other than T-Mobile (US)
I think what stevedebi was asking for is because the euro version comes unlocked from the factory, and I believe is labeled as such.

However, they are offering internal 32GB models and AT&T is not, and that's what I want. I'm current using an iPhone 4S 64GB and I want to be able to swap sim cards back and forth between phones. Yes, I know I can get a 64GB microSD card but I want 96Gb on the phone (I don't want to argue this point).
So I have a few questions:
1) If I get a Rogers or Bell phone without contract and manage to unlock it, will it be fully compatable with the AT&T network just by swapping sims cards with the iPhone?
2) Will it work with AT&T LTE as well as 3G / Edge, both cell and data?
3) Does unlocking companies like cellunlocker.net actually WORK? Is this legal?

1 yes as long as the Sim is the newer smaller type.

Just as a follow-up if I may - How would I then get O/S updates? Will I be able to install updates (like Jelly Bean 4.1 when it comes) from AT&T?

good question, you will probably get updates through kies regardless, probably end up getting the canadian version (only speaking from experience with the skyrocket) They usually ad an extra letter to the model number to signify carrier, and it will prevent you from flashing an OTA from someone else.
With that said, when an update gets release, it will end up here as well, and you can then choose to flash the AT&T version that way. But thats way down the line.

What is "kies" and "the skyrocket"? And per your last paragraph, is it possible to flash an AT&T version of the O/S on a Bell / Rogers phone?
BTW - Do you work for Bell Canada? If so, is there any issues with unlocking the phone with a 3rd party unlocker? I don't want to to anything illegal - I just want a 32GB phone that works on an AT&T LTE network.

From what I've seen and heard, I am confident that the big 3's version is fully compatible with AT&T network.
The model is all the same as I747M. Spec are all the same, so.... I am not worried.
In fact, Rogers uses the exact same network technology to AT&T. All the phone works on Rogers will works perfectly on AT&T as well! As long as it's unlocked.
Prior to my purchase of Rogers' SGS3, I was tempted to buy the AT&T version as it's cheaper.....

The point is probably moot since I cannot get either Rogers or Bell to sell me a phone at full price without a plan and ship it to the USA. They won't do this.
So I probably have to wait until one of these phone is offered from a Canadian customer via another source, like eBay. Any suggestions from anyone on how to get a Rogers or Bell phone shipped to the USA?
Jeez...If only AT&T offered a friggin' 32GB phone!! I wonder when those 128GB microSD cards are coming out.

You can buy the phone outright directly from rogers but yes, you will need a friend's address in Canada to ship it to. Then have that friend ship it to you in the US. Your other option is to come up - many dealers will sell it to you outright.
If you look around xda, the current methods of rooting and unlocking the phone are not so simple or pretty. In addition to that, the risks you'll have to take and extra costs likely isn't worth the extra 16GB.

Kies is the desktop software that samsung uses to backup your device as well as deliver updates
Now can you use this method to flash an AT&T rom on a rogers device. is unknown. in the past with the skyrocket (otherwise known as the Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE) the only difference is the hardcoded model number was I727R while at&t was I727 so flashing which would prevent that.
At the same time, this is xda there are fantastic people that would make a method for you to do that. The key, if you are game to do so is to do a lot of reading, and do nothing without feeling confident in what you are doing.
No I don't work for bell, but if they're here and in need of someone in the Marketing Dept..... However no issues with unlocking on a legal front

I assumed you wanted the free unlocking method. Of course if you're willing to pay for the unlock codes, I stand corrected.

Oh there's a free method? Knew there was for the s1 and s2 but didn't have it for the lte version of the s2.
I would look for the free method usually doesn't involve too many steps.

Whats up guys guys? So im definitely buying this phone, but problem is im on ATT. what really is the difference between Unlocked vs dev edition from HTC.com? i like to use RUUs to update software and occasionally wipe my phone clean after so many ROM installs. on my M9, the unlocked international version, there was only updated available through "update phone" section in settings. the DEV edition allowed me to go on HTC.com and download the RUU and update that way.
So what is truely the difference between unlocked/international and dev?

When you say dev edition.. I'm not sure what you're talking about. As the only thing currently available is an unlocked phone which works on att and tmobile. It's basically a dev edition.

There is no "Developer Edition" for the 10, only an "Unlocked" version. "Unlocked" in this case does not mean bootloader unlocked, it means carrier unlocked. There was a "Developer Edition" AND "Unlocked" version for the M9 and older devices, the difference being that "Developer Edition" came with an unlocked bootloader AND carrier unlocked. The "Unlocked" version comes only carrier unlocked but NOT bootloader unlocked. However, the bootloader on "Unlocked" devices CAN be unlocked through HTC Dev bootloader unlocking program.

yea i was talking about my M9 between those devices. on the M9, both the international and dev edition used different firmware. for this international HTC 10 device, where would i be able to get RUU's to update it? for the M9 international, they were not offered directly through HTC.

The unlocked US version (2PS650000) is different than the international version (2PS620000). They are actually different models. For past devices, HTCUSA has posted the RUUs for unlocked US devices on their rom update web page:

HTC International/EMEA typically does not post RUUs for their devices. That being said there are websites where leaked RUUs are always posted, however, they usually require a subscription.

Personally, I would go for the US unlocked version if for no other reason than warranty issues. To get a warranty repair on the international device you would have to send it overseas. Plus the international version is not sold in the United States so you would have to import it and pay taxes on that. Finally, that is the one that you know will have all the necessary radio bands for AT&T to work properly, as HTCUSA has tested the device on AT&T network.

ok, but i am going to be spending some significant time out of country, idk where 100% yet, but i would like my phone to work on their radios if possible. countries like Japan....

It's an unlocked device it should work on most GSM Networks as long as you have a SIM card for that Network otherwise you would be using AT&T international roaming. Data speed may well fluctuate depending on what frequencies individual carriers predominantly use but you should be able to make phone calls and whatnot without issue.

yea thats all i would care about is phone and text... ok sounds good. ima go for the USA unlocked. Thank you very much!

If you unlock the bootloaders for the unlocked version it is still covered by warranty. So there's not much difference other than if you want updates right away go Nexus. If you don't mind waiting for developers or HTC to bring the next version then get an HTC 10.

Nowadays tmo with their overseas roaming is the hot ticket for extended traveling. Just turn your phone on wherever you land and it works without having to get localized sims, distribute your regularly changing number, etc. Oddly the coverage overseas is better than in the US. They say you will be restricted to unlimited 2G data but normally you will get 3G. Seriously, I'm old and travel a lot. You're ahead of the game to port over and back compared to sim swapping because low cost sims are not always available and you save a lot of hassle. Next best option is sim swapping, Worst possible option is to use at&t as their overseas stuff is stupidly overpriced.
No matter which way you go most recent flagship phones travel pretty well as long as you don't require LTE, if you do you will want to research the carriers in the areas you will be traveling and get a prepaid on a network that your phone supports. Trip adviser forum is a pretty good resource for getting advise on the local coverage.

all i really care about overseas is the use of call and text. data, as long as my phone can operate, idc what it is. ill have wifi everywhere i go for the most part.

Yeah, I don't care about LTE myself, is nice but not in any way a requirement. Having some data however is huge. You can translate, get information, and maps has become very good with walking and mass transit directions. I also use Here and download the maps for the entire area I'm going to be in before I leave. It's the easiest way to have mapping capability in remote areas.
The information I posted is essentially the conventional wisdom you will get if you search the travel forums, they're the go to for specific local information.

Thank you for your email. My name is ***** and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team. You will have the option in the menu to unlock the bootloader, as this is a function in the Marshmallow.

I am planning on pre ordering it but not sure if the US unlocked version would work flawlessly in Europe. I would opt buying it in US if there are no differences as I can use the discount coupon and it is much cheaper here than UK or Germany.
I could read out some changes in terms of bands, but not sure what does it translate to!?

The supported network frequencies are the big difference. Check to confirm that the international model supports the network frequencies you will need while still in the states and vice versa.

I have checked both the unlocked US and EMEA model, the only difference is on the LTE bands. I checked the LTE bands in Europe through wiki and most seem to use band 1,3,7,20, which are covered by the US model as well. Other than that gsm, 2G and 3G are the same.
Would someone confirm that the US model would work properly in EU?

UK guy thinking of getting a HTC 10 while on holidays in Chicage July 2016

Hi, I was intending of getting a Pay as Go sim while in USA for my M9 but now that the 10 is out I thought I might get one whilst out there. Do you think the 10 will be readily available {July 8th - 27} and do I go for a unlocked version and get a Pay as Go sim or a carrier based one and unlock later.

My personal preference would be to purchase the unlocked version. Unfortunately, it would be unlikely that you would be able to find an unlocked version in a retail store, but time will tell if any retail stores will offer it. (It should be available through the HTC web site by then.) You would probably be stuck with getting a carrier branded model. (T-Mobile would be the GSM variant here in the United States.)

Sorry. Just waiting around for my 10 to ship and trying to avoid work right now.

Two BestBuy reps claimed they would be carrying/able to order unlocked HTC 10's. I hope so, because I spent my saved phone cash on my wedding. If they do not carry it, I'll be forced into an unlocked S7.

Are there variants of the H8314 not compatible with Verizon?

Just got an H8314 model and verizon is unable to activate the phone. Are there multiple versions of the H8314 that I should know about. Shouldn't all of them be compatible with verizon?

Did Verizon offer to activate a new SIM in the device? Did you check the IMEI?

I took it to Verizon to get activated and it didn't work, nor did anything I tried. They punched in the IMEI several times and it never came up as working with their network.

Same thing happened to me today.
Last night the tier 2 tech guy told me I needed a new sim card.
Anyone else have any success activating it?
What's the trick?
The Verizon website says that its certified for use on it's network.

Same thing happened to me today.
Last night the tier 2 tech guy told me I needed a new sim card.
Anyone else have any success activating it?
What's the trick?

There are 2 versions of the H8314, one that works with Verizon and one that doesn't (international). Unfortunately, the international ones are easier to find online, if it says it doesn't work on Verizon/CDMA despite it being this version, then believe it. The American variant seems to be a bit more expensive than the international version.

Aren't the internal components the same?
Couldn't you just flash the US version of the firmware?

I don't know. My firmware flashing days are behind me to know this for sure.
