[Q] Safe To Remove Apps - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day all!
Just received my 4Gb/64 ZF2 yesterday. Coming from Xperia Z3.
I think I'm liking it enough. Need to try a different launcher, but most importantly, I want to get rid of some of the pre-installed apps (Jawbone Up, etc.) but don't want to root (and I need kw I'll get a bunch of replies telling me to do so, but I just don't want to)
That being said, has anyone started a list of apps that are safe to disable in the Settings>Apps menu?
I tries search, but couldn't find anything.
Maybe we can start a list with my post and build on it:

I went through and uninstalled almost all the third party apps, as well as a bunch of the ASUS apps.
I haven't yet come up with a list (been a busy weekend), but most of the ones you can safely remove should be pretty easy to spot.

i'd like a list as well if anyone has the time, these apps are intimidating lol

I'll be doing a full wipe very soon. Testing some SysUI changes, as well as getting rid of other things to make it cleaner.
I'll have a solid list of base apps very soon.

Can anyone confirm any apps that can be removed?

So far i can confirm that freezing asus launcher will disable the smart cover notifications from displaying properly. Everything else has been fine so far

I have removed those apps and I have no problem and almost 3 gb ram free.
The actual name might not be the same because mine is in Greek.

Damn that's a lot of bloatware haha didn't realized I removed so many crap until just now.,all I earned is 2.7-3 gb free ram some space in rom and about 15 to 20 min more on screen time
Edit: now that I think of it the 20 min more on screen time might be because my battery settle down after 4 charges . My on screen was 3 hours and about 20 to 30 mins now I get 4 hours with 24% battery left, all at normal with only the location off.

Oh boy. "Phone storage space is getting low." Google, please sort it out.

The dreaded message for not much space left. I've recently been testing out a few apps to suit my needs. And I've bumped into the message that shows the limitations of the eminently custmisable Android. And I haven't even downloaded one game!!!
I'm really hoping Froyo 2.2 (if that is what it will be called) will sort this out.
Pleeeeeeeease Google. Do us all a favour. Give us some room to maneuver.
I hope it gets sorted soon too. But as has been mentioned previously, HTC could have easily put 4-8gb onboard, plenty of space to install apps.
Google are adressing the issue, just have no idea when!
Re: Oh boy. "Phone storage space is getting low." Google, please sort it out.
Interestingly, I was thinking that the manufacturers of Android devices must know something because all the current crop of high end devices don't really have more than 1gig of memory. RAM or ROM. The Incredible being the exception. This was more nailed home when the Dell future devices (Thunder, Lightning, Flash, etc) came on the news feeds. The devices had no more on board memory than what we have now. And they are scheduled for release in 2011!
We all know Google is aware of tje issue. But what and when they are going to do is anyones guess. Amd why manufactures haven't been releasing devices with increasing on biard memory is perhaps telling.

Google has already officially advised a couple of weeks ago that a solution will be available soon. What the timeframe of soon is hasn't yet been defined, nor whether it will be a patch fix or a froyo upgrade. But either way, it's coming soon
I thought it was a battery life issue? that larger on board storage tended to lead to battery life being very short. What they need is a secure version of app2sd that's official and doesn't lead to piracy. Hopefully 2.2 will contain this.
I have low space and I know that, does anyone know how to remove the notification without having to uninstall apps as I don't plan at the moment to install any more until the update. I think I will give it a month and if the update isn't out by then I will try root and apps2sd.
pathetic......
clearing cache seems to be daily task now.
I don't believe this. I just uninstalled Google Earth so that I could test another app. Didn't like the app. Removed it. Went to instally Google Earth again.
Can't find it in the Market.
Can't find in via m.google.com/earth. Message "The requested item could not be found."
Can't access it via the link that Google sends via sms.
Just my luck!
Search the nexus forums for the apk and install it directly.
That's what I did, no problems.

Login via your Google account via appbrains app then search via the app or the link http://www.appbrain.com/ via your PC...
Choose install in the web browser for example and via the app on the phone choose manage and sync
@ OP yes hope for 2.2 or in other words Froyo will have it, but curious how fast HTC will get us an update
What I personally use to manage the ridiculous small app memory space I use the app "Quick app" to cleanup cache space.
Re: Oh boy.
This is completely driving me nuts now. Every single day the same issue. At first it only triggered below 8mb free but now its become a joke. Same error even at 17mb free and can't install anything.

I feel you. I just uninstalled a few, reinstalled G Earth, have 15.something MB left, and no notification. Maybe it needs to drop below 15 or get to 12.
Either way....
FRO-YO! FRO-YO! FRO-YO!

I don't get how you've run out of space... I've got 87 apps installed on my phone (counted every icon on the pop up full program list) and still got 47MB's left...

A quick count up shows that 37 of those icons are pre-installed anyway, so you've not got quite so many apps as you think.
Add in a satnav and 8 or 9 games like me, and you will find yourself at the limit very quickly :-(

Yeah I understand that a lot are pre-installed, but that still leaves 50 apps installed. I've not got sat nav installed (use google maps navigation) but i've got 20 games installed (nothing major like a big 3d game).
Does the sat nav install its self to the phone? Guess that would take up a lot of room...
What's the best way to clean out the phone cache etc. I found Quick Cache Cleaner that got me a few MB back from the browser.

How to stop Amazon mp3 Store from starting when you receive a call?

Hi,
I'm new to Android and I see that every time I get a callthe Amazon mp3 Store and the Voice Dialler app have started. I haven't been able to find any settings in the apps themselves or the system settings to disable this. I can understand voice dialler starting with the phone app, but why in the world is the Amazon mp3 store linked to it? I'm hoping someone knows the mechanism by which one app causes another app to startup in Android.
If you use startup auditor you can select what you want to run at startup, but there is also a button to not let it run, even after startup. Are you on the stock rom? Go root and download one of the many good roms they have alot of the useless sprint crap taken out. (has ANYONE actually used the amazon store to buy an mp3? I mean, we have mp3 download on the market which is like a pirates wet dream) lol

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. I am on the stock ROM, but I'm still in the 30 day trial period and haven't decided if I will keep the Evo. I was able to tweak most settings to get a pretty good enough battery life that the stock ROM doesn't trouble me that much. I just needed a way to stop some of these programs from running. Besides, the voice dialler starting up problem would be there I'm assuming even with some of the tweaked ROMs since that's an Android component.
BTW do you know how exactly startup auditor works? What settings file does it alter to prevent this? Does anyone have a pointer to some Android OS docs on how exactly this starting up of processes automatically works? I hope startup auditor is not doing something silly like staying resident and then killing the processes you don't want?

Okay Startup Auditor isn't quite as good as I thought. It seems to work mostly but I still see the Amazon mp3 store starting up sometimes. It's really irritating. I'm glad I didn't decide to purchase the app right away and waited for some time. I'll try mailing the deveoper and see if he can do something.
By the way in case folks are interested, the way it seems to work is by intercepting the Android OS events for various things like new call, new messages etc. I guess it then somehow doesn't pass these events to the apps you don't want. I'll need to hit up some Android developer docs to read up on its event system.

OS 4.6.1 vs 3.6.8(unlocked GSM 32gig)

Fire OS 4.6.1 on unlocked GSM 32gig Fire Phone
Notable changes,
Finally we have native wallpaper support
Different slightly improved lock screen notifications
Smart dialer
Ability to switch default SMS/MMS and Keyboard apps
New Dev. Options
Ability to force quit and(or) Disable bloatware apps
Widgets seem to be working well
More detailed settings for Low Motion/Dynamic perspective(specifically for lockscreen, homescreen, and maps)
Google maps is now seemingly 100% functional
Ability to toggle switch cellular data(2g,3g,LTE)
Google Play and GAPPs still working well
Also we now have a bluetooth keyboard config. in our settings
New Emoticons
Status bar is semi-transparent and looks really nice despite lack of persistent icon notifications
Addition of print services pack(HP, Canon, Epson)
Updated Sounds and Notifications settings(
Things that sadly remained the same
No status bar notifications
Cannot individually clear calls or messages from carousel
Still not native android
Notifications seem hit and miss as usual
No Graphical updates or graphical setting in stock message or dialer apps
Camera seems to be the same and I'm still having having better luck with the google camera
App drawer functions the same(new options in app info though)
Overall function of the O.S. seems to improve a lot. Smooth scrolling through the carousel, less if not no lag at all on sleep/wake, and just all in all more pleasing to look at.
I updated manually by downloading the .bin and moving it to the home folder and searching for update with wifi/data off, and because of that I am unsure if the new att bloatware apps were part of the update due to my carrier or if they were packaged inside the update bin which was a shocking 1.3gb. Even though I am fairly certain that those apps are my fault in the first place I feel the need to warn that the U.S. att .bin file could have that affect and unlocked users may want to wait for the OTA just to play it safe. There is however a great guide on here explaining the process and linking quite a few files(for those who can't wait).
**This did work for me however if it does not work for you I am not at fault, sideload at your own risk**
Feel free to add what you find I know I missed a few things but since there is no apparent changelog from amazon I figured I'd try to compile a small unofficial changelog of sorts.
Tried Towelroot Its been hung at the towelroot screen with a highlighted "make it rain" button for about ten mins... I'm going to leave it running for a while and see if anything happens but I'm assuming its still a no go.
I've seen issues regarding call audio, google services and a few other things but I personally haven't been able to recreate them and fortunately haven't had them in the first place.
Camera seems faster in taking photos for me. Also there is an auto HDR setting, before it was either on or off.

So, matsnackson do you think that is better to install (sideload) the Google-Camera APP, and used it instead of the default Amazon Camera APP?
Could you please, let us know what differences or improvements do you have noticed, if you use the Google Camara APP instead of the Amazon one?
Notable changes
- Chooseable colors for mail accounts and calendars, but there aren't too much colors to choose to.
Things that sadly remained the same
- Shared Google calendars won't show up in the/any calendar app, that's very very annoying

I second your opinion as I have not been able to conect my LG G watch to Fire phone with 4.6.1.
Also sideloding Google play services and play store worked fine for few minutes after which the play services auto updates when I install google search and now from Playstore.
After this any sideloaded google apps start hanging with white screen and circle clock running. Uninstall and install after factory resets also did not help.

I've been using the stock camera app for a few days and it seems to be better than I first thought but I still prefer the google camera app, but at this point it seems to be my personal preference... I really just feel more comfortable with the google camera app.(long time nexus user)
I have seen quite a few people with the google play issues and I tried removing then reloading google services and google play but i havent had any issues the only advice i can give is to remove and try again making sure to pay close attention to the order you install the packages(there is a specific order, and a few great guides on here)
The LG watch seems to be common issue as well but I don’t have one to test with, I'll look into buying one and see what I can do. Until then the only advice I have is to unpair the watch and your phone and reboot before attemting to repair the two. Good luck and sorry.

I'll third this. I feel like Amazon is intentionally crippling Google services, and I've already ordered a replacement phone.
These are services that run fine on what, 99% of Android phones?

Honestly I don't think this is intentionally being done by either side, we run an outdated version of android so naturally were going to see at least a few compatibility issues, have you tried a factory reset and full reload of play services in order? Also be patient with 4.6.1 from everything I've read its not technically official on the unlocked phones yet.

I'm looking forward to the update. I feel changing your keyboard is a few months late, but I'd be happy to finally have swiftkey back. I'm running an unlocked Fire Phone with 3.6.8. Amazon doesn't even acknowledge a new update on their Fire Phone update page. Perhaps it's in some sort of beta as they harvest data before making it official?

How do I get good battery life

Hi guys,
So around 1 month ago now, I got myself hands on a Note10+ (N975F)
I have been noticing screen off time drain, it is around 1.8% for me. I have tried using greenify, optimizing the settings, battery saving mode etc.
It hasn't really been working for me. Screen off time is really important for me, even more than screen on time.
So i wanted to know, how could I maximize the battery life of my Note10+? Is there like a custom rom you could recommend, like Lineage or dr ketan?
Knox is already tripped bcz of the previous owner, so that is no problem. Or a other custom rom or just with rooting something.
If you know anything, I would appreciate it if you could tell me,
Kind regards,
Crewz
First, you can select apps that you dont require to be always running, to be dormant, look for this option in settings, also you can install galaxy labs, there is a similar option there also, I disabled several apps via CCSWE, that have the undesirable behavior of being always running and accesing internet, such as facebook, chrome, youtube, operator apps, etc, also, with CCSWE you can deprive apps of certain undesired services that eat batt, this a process that takes some time, as you use the device, you can obseve and decide what to disable, to uninstall, or control via ccswe, I have my note 10+ since Sept 6 2019 and the battery lasts thru the whole day, I get some 7 hrs SOT on normal std use, when I play intensive games,, that is another diferent thing

Hey thank you for taking the time to help me. I have tried what you said, I went into settings and I went through my apps and selected those that don't need to run in the background. I also downloaded CCSWE from the playstore, i saw like 500 applications, but only disable or clear data from the application.
Are there any other device settings you recommend changing?
Thanks for your time.
Decide if you want to root it, if so you'll have many more options and tools to work with.
Otherwise get PD MDM to block apks from running at boot and disable them.
Use Samsung Device Manager and set to Optimized in main window. Toggle on fast charging but don't enable any other off the top 3 dot menu. You can then disable that app too. 3rd party power management apps including Samsung's can screw it up. Cloud apps, Goggle Backup Transport/Backup Framework are big offenders on my stock 10+
Disable Google, Samsung and any carrier feedback.
To hell with Bixby except Bixby Vision/Vision Framework which are needed by the cam for full functionality.
Play with it.

Don't disable Bixby Framework either.
The feedback options are buried in settings, you'll run into them.
I'm not rooted so I don't spend much time looking at what I could do. You do have real time cpu/power usage capabilities with it for weeding out the hogs... for one thing.

Galaxy labs, Battery Tracker is useful.
See if Google Backup Transport or Framework are the culprits. If already package blocked clear their data and the data on Goggle Play Services ie gms.
It can be hard to ferret out as many apks simply are thrown together under Android Services.
Worse some Google apps falsely show under Transport etc even when its blocked. That why you clear the data of gms.
Use the factory load of Samsung Device Manager to globally clean caches. Reboots seldom help.
Turn off location, bt and wifi if not using.
Do not let Playstore run or Samsung updates unless your using them.
When running clean its ide current with screen on is typically in the 100-200 ma range. A few lower and higher. If you're getting a lot of spikes 400 ma and above at idle something is using a lot of the cpu resources...

When running clean its ide current with screen on is typically in the 100-200 ma range. A few lower and higher. If you're getting a lot of spikes 400 ma and above at idle something is using a lot of the cpu resources...

So I installed Galaxy Labs and Battery Tracker.
I noticed that Google Foto's was on top with 7.1%.
Followed was whatsapp with 6.3%
And google play service was 3.78%
I haven't seen Google Backup Transport in the list.
Would there be like a way to turn off location automaticly when I am not using it, for example that it would only turn on for google maps or something?
Thanks for your time!

If you leave locations on it's a whore to a lot of apps including Google. Looks like you found your prime suspects.
Lol, WhatsApp never runs here same with FB.

Question Facebook and Instagram FULLSCREEN

It took me a long while....
But I'm back one more time!
I've finally got Facebook locked into phone mode with the bar across the top not the side!
This
1 Stops cutting the sides of pictures
2 looks way better imo with it FULLSCREEN and the pictures nice and big
3 finally figured out how to stop auto updating.
I went as far as disabling play store to test if it was play store... Still updated..
So I've used app cloner with a few tweaked settings and she's now done updating finally!!!!
I was testing some modded apps but they all broke the stories button to add a story.
This works 100 as it should!
If anyone is interested let me know I will do a step by step!
One issue.. No notifications. I'm still on it will update later
if you need some additional users let us know. Whoever designed the apps for foldables was definitely smoking something lol

Please share a step by step method to optimise Instagram, thanks in advance.
I've been working nonstop to try and figure this out.
Facebook:
Option A
For Facebook, I can lock it from updating with a step by step guide the only issues are
1. I doesn't push notifications but does retrieve them
2. If a marketplace listing or Facebook link is sent to you through messenger it opens in the browser not the app, cannot get this fixed..
Option B
Install a certain version of Facebook and don't ever close the app out (this way all links open and messenger and Facebook read each other as they should) found the right app that keeps stories intact!
Guide; install 376.0.0.12.108 (arm64-v8a) (nodpi) (Android 10+) login force close once it will update once then leave it alone no closing it out. (App or phone restart will call for a reinstall)
Option c
I found an older modded Facebook app that will auto update after the first close to a current version without forcing the app to tablet mode
(This app blocks ads reals and stories but breaks connection to messenger completely, meaning if you click the top right messenger button in Facebook it will prompt you to install which it already is..
Instagram:
Download version 253.x.x.x.x and block auto updates
Messenger:
Found an ad blocked version that works but completely breaks connection to all fb apps.
Instagram is flawless
Facebook is silently updating every night at 12.. it's NOT play store, I disabled to test.
My current setup is option B for Facebook. I'm sure I will have to reinstall every now and then but it's worth having the full screen
I've been fighting this hard as I feel they really wasted some space and cut a bunch of all the pictures to make it work..
I've tried cloning the apk with messing with Android version, play store ids, everything
Option B is the best option with everything working nothing broke
Coming back one more time...
After trying to get Verizon on esim I had to restart and lost my Facebook and it has been fighting hard since....
Facebook setting, search media, device settings, media and contacts and shut off auto update app. I finally found it! Was hidden deep in the settings
Last reply. Updates turned off and I can finally restart my phone and do whatever without it silently updating.
Finally have won this battle !

Interesting, I guess I don't notice pictures being cut off. I thought the new layout was better optimized for the fold screen. To each there own though.
