[Q] Tethering with an international sim card - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I am trying to use the AT&T Note 4 (Lollipop C2) with a European sim and although I could tether with the same sim and a Galaxy S 4, the Note 4 doesn't let me tether. When I turn on tethering, the eligibility check program pops up (I guess if I were using my AT&T card to see whether I have tethering provisioned) and then turns the WIFI tethering off. Again this is an international sim with tethering provisioned. Since there is no root yet to bypass the provision check, is there any other option I could use? Any ideas?

AT&T Tethering not working with Note 4
Symptom: AT&T Tethering not working with Note 4 and as well other programs like Wallet
Hardware: AT&T Samsung Note 4 910A
Provider: You have other than AT&T SIM inside your smart phone
Cause: AT&T software loaded on your AT&T Samsung Note 4 910A is locked off for tethering and checks AT&T for a code to unlock it. It first checks the type of sim you have and it fails on that check giving you "Mobile Data is not available or Invalid SIM" error when you try to turn on mobile hot spot. Because you don't have an AT&T provider you will always get this error. I read that AT&T charges separate for tethering as a service?
Solution: Wiping your phone does nothing and you need to root your phone an apply the patch. I have called my provider up in Canada and they informed me they will try to get the code from AT&T. It is difficult to root the AT&T version of your phone as I am reading this online unlike other versions. They put something on the phone. I also stuck on this problem like the rest of you and is in the process of finding a proper root for this version of phone and than installing TWRP thereafter to help backup my ROM before I do any changes. To root your phone you need odin, but I was reading it now doesn't work for Note 4 AT&T version? I have to investigate if this is true.
I hope that helps?

Can't update AT&t NOTE 2 while using tmobile sim card?

MY sister has an att galaxy note 2. She've since left att and switched to tmobile. She also got att to unlock the phone before she left so she could use her tmobile sim card.
Now i'm trying to update her note 2 from 4.1.2 to 4.3 or 4.4 and it says there are no servers or updates avaiable. So you can't update an att note 2 while on tmobile network?
Also if i'm somehow able to do it, would updating her phone lock her phone again and prevent her from using her tmobile sim card?
Would flashing any roms also lock the phone and prevent using tmobile sim?

Convert A US Cellular Note 4 to Verizon Dev Edition?

... OK, I'm sorry for the clickbait title, but I think it could work.
I have a US Cellular Note 4 in-hand, and with CF AutoRoot and Flashify, it's permanently-rooted and TWRP is flashed as a custom recovery.
The device is carrier unlocked "for use on any CDMA network" and by default... it supports all the same bands as Verizon, with the exception of LTE band 13, which isn't an issue for me. (There is a method of enabling it, but that's a topic for another thread)
So, essentially, it's a Note 4 running on Verizon bands, and the bootloader is unlocked. Other than the USC software running on the phone, it's pretty much a Verizon Dev Edition in USC clothing.
Now... Verizon is currently working on acquiring the MEID from US Cellular, so I still have yet to actually get the phone activated... but everyone is optimistic. Even Verizon, and they're never cool with anything like this.
So my question: This USC Note 4 does not currently recognize a Verizon SIM. It came with a USC SIM which it recognizes fine, but I get "Invalid SIM" in my ongoing notifications, and "unknown" under About Phone > Status > ICCID. Verizon has told me that when the MEID transfer is complete, the phone will magically recognize a Verizon SIM. Is there truth to that? My thought is that I might need to flash Verizon software on the phone to get the SIM to recognize. Sooo...
Is it safe to flash software from a Verizon release to this phone? Will flashing a Retail Edition rom in Odin lock the bootloader like it does on the Dev Edition?
Am I even accurate in thinking that there's some kind of support file that's missing from the USC rom that allows the phone to see my Verizon SIM?
If anyone has any knowledge of these topics... please reply.
Thanks!

How to enable video calling on unlocked SM-N910A On T-Mobile network

I am using unlocked SM-N910A On T-Mobile network. I am trying to enable video calling on Phone app. I checked setting under Phone app but did not find anything.
I also noticed that when I go to Settings -> More Settings - I see first 'Network or Sim card error' popup with ok button and after that other options (i.e caller id, call forwarding, auto redial etc) are loaded on screen.
Any input will be great if this can be done or limitation.
APN is fast.t-mobile.com
Settings -> Connections- > Mobile networks - > Mobile Data -> "Enhanced 4G LTE services" is checked.

I'm on ATT using the same phone, and I don't think ATT supports video calling on their phones. I don't know for certain, but my last 4 phones were all ATT and none of them had native video calling. I always had to use apps like Tango. I could just be in the same boat as you and just don't know how to activate the feature or something.

To: spexwood,
Thank you for reply.
I also noticed there is no wifi calling option. there is also "sim card or Network error" while setting forward calling.
Based on following links,it seems it is a limitation

5.1.1 is the latest version, but the only way to OTA is to use an ATT sim card. You can Odin the files though.
I recommend updating just because 5.1.1 is much stabler, but I don't think it'll help you. I'm on 5.1.1 and as I said, I can't find any way to use video calling.

I can't answer any of the last 3 questions, but can the first few.
OTA (Over The Air update) is not possible without having an ATT sim and being connected to the ATT network.
With a different sim, the phone will ALWAYS say that no update is available and that your phone is up to date when it isn't.
Kies will act similar as to not having an ATT sim. ATT doesn't upload their updates to Kies.
The only way for you to update would be:
1) borrow someone's ATT sim card and use it to connect to the ATT network
2) go to a Best Buy with a Samsung Experience area and ask them to update your phone. They'll do it for FREE and it doesn't matter where you got your phone. You do need to tell them that you're using the ATT phone on a different network. This will male sure they flash the correct firmware and not brick your phone.
3) Use the latest Odin file to update your phone yourself. This is basically what they'll do at Best Buy, except that you'll be solely responsible for the outcomes of your phone. The Odin files are posted in the ATT Note 4 General thread. Just do a search for Odin.

Hi, everyone. I am using an unlocked at&t phone and trying to figure out how to use tmobile video calling on it. Is there a possible way to do it? Thanks.

Use Verizon note 4 on AT&T

I got Verizon Note 4.
Verified that it is unlocked. Not stolen. No contract binded from Verizon store and through phone (Clean phone)
Android Version : 5.0.1
Location: Las Vegas
Insert AT&T sim card. No signal.
Change APN setting following the information on AT&T website. Still not working. No signal.
At&t store rep. said I need to l unlock the phone ( I already check with Verizon via phone and store)
Verizon rep. on phone said: I should be able to use the phone with At&t sim card
Verizon Rep. in store said : Galaxy note 4 won't work on AT&T. It needs to be rooted by an expert. Only Galaxy S5 or later version will work.
I searched websites and many say that they are using Verizon Note 4 on AT&T network (At&t sim card)
I just need to use phone and text message. No data needed.
Anybody can help me?
I was able to use SIM from AT&T before yesterday, but after trying to update the firmware using Software Upgrade Assistant tool on Windows 10, it's now stuck at 'searching for service'.
Did you change the network settings from global to lte/GSM?
I am reading this. Maybe a solution.
Did you try to insert a different carrier sim card and entering the unlock code?

After reading post i see you have a att sim sim on verizon phone. This could be a problem as verizon and att dont play nice. Stupid question is did you actually pay for service?

Yeah. Me either.
Did you do a factory reset after software update. Usually helps. Also mess with APN settings. Reboot after changing APN.
Problem solved.
Changing APN settings and reboot did not work. I just inserted the Verizon SIM came with the phone and made a phone call. Of course it's not activated, so I hang up when it reached Verizon automated system. Guess what, now SIM from Lycomobile works. H2O Wireless SIM also works. It means that it now can work with AT&T and T-Mobile network.

I'm in a similar boat as you (4.4.4 on Cricket Wireless, wanting to upgrade to 5.1.1). I just want to make sure I understand what you did to restore service:
1. You had phone working on AT&T with an older Android version (KK?)
2. You upgraded to a newer version via the Verizon upgrade tool (I assume 5.0.1 since 5.1.1 is not yet available via the tool)
3. You lost AT&T service after upgrade
4. You were able to restore AT&T service by using an inactive Verizon SIM and making a phone call
Is this correct? TIA

Mostly, except that I tried to upgrade from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1, but found that 5.1.1 was not yet available via the tool, but the process of installing the software on windows 10 and maybe I also used the Verizon SIM during the process which might have messed something up. I updated the firmware to 5.1.1 by downloading the zip file in a thread here and flashed it through recovery. The network connection problem was then solved by making a phone call with the SIM came with the phone.

I just updated via the Verizon tool (BPA1 finally showed up) and it was, surprisingly, perfectly fine. I first backed up as much as I can (via Smart Switch and Helium app), then pulled my mSD card, left my SIM card in the phone, and proceeded to update. After the first boot stuff (app optimization, etc.) I soon saw the AT&T sign in the notification bar, and I was able to make a phone call without doing anything else. With all the reports of SIM card locking after updating I was worried that I might run into the same issue, but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't. I had to re-enter the APN setting as the upgrade seemed to have removed it, but after re-adding Cricket's APN I was able to get cellular data as well.
Thanks again for your help
You need to access the hidden menu and change your radio and modem protocols. There's a forum on XDA called domestic and internation sim or network unlock for spring but should work the same on verizon
fyi, i got my note 4 working on gsm using 2 different freedompop sims-the at&t lte sim gets lte via band 4.
the global sim based on t-mobile did get hpsda+
just change the apn

Verizon carrier settings not updating on unlocked att note 10

Hey I have a att note 10 I recently got unlocked with a unlock code. I put in a Verizon sim card and service works but the carrier profile and apps aren't switching to Verizon from att.
I got the att note 10 unlocked by unlock service that sent me the unlock code.
I'm not sure what to do iv factory reset the device multiple times and I can't seem to get the phone to switch to Verizon software like the boot screen showing Verizon and all the Verizon apps so I can get wifi calling working.
I tried this before with smooth success with a TMobile note 9 that I got unlocked and installed a Verizon sim card then it immediately prompts me to reboot the device to switch all the new sim card carrier settings and apps.
