Looking for an OTG cable that allows simultaneous charging - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I keep reading about people of different various phones and cables not being able to charge the phone also so I just need a recommendation if needed unless it's a simple software fix. Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks.

Last time I looked into this about a year ago, it's impossible.

I don't think it is possible with any phone.
Do you perhaps not understand exactly what an OTG cable is?
A USB thumb drive isn't going to charge your phone, and the microUSB port is where the phone is charged through.

Yes, but I didn't know if it was possible to charge also with one of those 3+ cables with the extra female micro usb connector I was hoping was for charging your phone while it's charging port is being used for otg

Oh. Now it makes sense. And something I've never even considered doing to be honest.

I can't be the only m8 owner who wants to charge their phone whilst using otg...

The future of charging through USB

Before to long we might be able to plug our devices into our computer and they will charge!
http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/8/10/new-usb-specification-promises-100w-power/
Thanks for the relay, great find! With these newer devices it really makes sense and heck, why to I need seperate power bricks for my USB hub, speakers, and mouse charging base. Getting to a single USB cable would be ideal down the line. I had just ready recently how Apple has adopted the Thunderbolt cable for something similar (though not as powerful watt wise). It's a good trend. I can't wait to get a desk that doesn't have a rats nest zip-tied under it

Yes, this new spec is 100 watts. Enough to power printers and just about any other USB device.

..not at 2 amps like the wall charger (unless you have something special).

Ever notice how it takes about twice the amount of time to charge?
Its actually about the same if you use one of the following charging/data cables linked below. I have both of them. I use one for my car and one at work. I was actually very impressed by the quality and function of these cables for what I paid. I plug in my tab at work to charge via laptop usb when the battery is below 15% and it charges it to 100% in about 6 hours. If you are looking for an extra cable, I highly recommend the first one.

That sounds cool, but will computer have that much power to offer?
Or could it overload it's power source?

With everything going greener I'd expect all but some high end systems have plenty to spare from the 300-500 watt PS. Heck, smart PS with the right USB implementations could allow charging with the PC off for these gadgets and even cutting the power to charge off when it senses the devices are charged. It's all spes and who follows them though. Pretty cool even if it works for just a few features.

I doubt you would be able to use this in Laptops. My laptops power supply is 90W, they would have to double the size of the power brick and that would be annoying. But, for desktops, this could be nice with like a 600W PSU.

Maybe in the future you will be able to charge your laptop through your desktops USB port and get rid of the brick

I have a USB 3.0 host card in my desktop machine. It has a connector for a hard drive power cable in order to have enough charge power.

Long micro usb cable.

Hello could anyone please recommend me a long usb charging cable, as the one that comes is too small. I would prefer at least 2 meters please, and am just weary of buying something that could potentially damage my phone, so if anyone has come across something reliable, please let me know.

just buy standard micro usb cable with the length you wish to have. The cable doesn't affect the charging current.
Or just a USB extender...
picked up a few from eBay, $1.49 ea, free shipping...
eBay FTW! Went from having 1 cable with my first Droid to 12+ and spent maybe $10 on them!
Another option besides ebay

Wireless charging while OTG mounting

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to use wireless charge while OTG mounting external storage?
Need something like this to replace my current car dashboard tablet.

No, it is not possible at least in its stock configuration with stock rom. I tested this last night with my Xbox360 controller and my koolpad qi charger. As soon as the OTG cable is inserted, wireless charging ceases.
I'm assuming there's a good reason why it functions like this.

Ah ok, thanks for the answer even though it wasn't what i hoped for
I guess it needs a kernel hack to so for, and it disable charging for security reasons since OTG host is also power supply.
Guess Nexus might not be what i'm looking for unless i use some wireless storage solution.
On my nexus 4 when I connect it to my TV using a slimport cable to HDMI, I can still place it on my wireless charging orb and it chargers wirelessly.. Weird that the n7 doesn't follow the same behavior... I am going to test it to make sure...

I'm not sure how the SlimPort/HDMI works, but i think the difference is that the phone act as power supply when you use OTG. I looked at the kernel for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Nexus 7 a long time ago, and could see the source switched the power from "pull" to "push" when OTG was connected, and could be possible to hack the kernel, but i never dared to try because of the risk there might be doing so. I'm far from an expert when it comes to stuff like that, so better not to mess around too much
Anyway, i hoped there might have been a chance with wireless charge, since it's different "connector", so maybe the kernel wouldn't turn off charge when OTG connected, but seems like it does.

That would be my guess too, whenever the USB port gives or receives power (or thinks it's doing either), wireless charging is turned off, probably to prevent overvoltage or short circuiting the battery.
Qi charger most likey can't give enough current to the device while it has a USB otg attached.
any update on this question? same behavior for me with @bruce2728 rom and with Glitch kernel. can't seem to find a way to use USB otg + charging....

Normal for the micro USB charging cable to "wiggle" in the port?

Not having a single problem with it charging, just surprised you can easily move the cable when plugged in from left to right or up or down, tried 4 different cables, all the same, is this just normal for micro USB to prevent it from being broken by a yank? Thanks in advance.

Same thing for me as well. Doesn't really bother me.

I noticed it immediately but I'm trying to ignore it.
Alright so apparently it is normal? Just bothers me as on my Note 2 I eventually had to end up wrapping the charging cord around the phone to hold the charging cord in the port otherwise it wouldn't charge at all (port got SUPER loose), and didn't want that to happen again.
I guess maybe there is "play" in it so that if someone does yank the cord it doesn't just snap off inside, but I have no idea, glad to know I'm not alone though and apparently it is the norm for the Note 4.
Doh, just noticed we can always use the warranty @ AT&T stores to exchange\swap out for up to an entire year, I was paranoid as I thought I only had 14 days and after that it was in Samsungs hands (people that have to deal with Samsung's support seem to end up very unhappy) so I'm far less stressed about it now. I still am considering a Squaretrade warranty, anyone here used them? I keep hearing good things but wasn't sure if they are worth it, but most people seem to get a new phone even if water damaged\broken with 2 days. Anyone here have experience with Squaretrade?

Type C compliant CABLES

We all know the 10 sadly uses Qualcomm quick charge. Would a USB c complaint 10ft cable bother the phone as long as it's the stock charger? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016ZYUEVE/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Whenever its charging the charging block whines like bloody murder sometimes. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't damaging the charger or the phone.
Edit: buzzes with stock cable too, just not as loud.
I don't see why that cable wouldn't work it's got the resistor so it can't pull way too much from the charging end.

Yeah it was on the list, that's why i got it. Should I be worried the charger buzzes like that? Because it does it with the stock cable too, just takes a few mins. If everyone else's charger buzzes like that too, then fine, but otherwise...

Doesn't buzz with mine. I have tons of chargers but none of them buzzed on me. I recommend you get that exchanged.
I have some F-Color cables 2m/6' that I use with the Quickcharger... haven't had an issue. Apparently Amazon will only sell cable that stringently meet the USB Type C standard, so buy from them if you're not sure.

Would this cable be sufficient? I need a second cable to carry around with me and I really don't want to pay HTC $20 for another one. I just want to make sure I don't damage anything before I buy it.
