So I just got my brand new Note 4 Developer Edition today, I'm trying to make a stock backup but all the methods I'm finding tell me I have to root first. This is my first DE and before I had to use Safestrap on my S4 because Verizon are D-bags. So I'm familiar with Odin, but not at all familiar with TWRP or CWM besides the acronyms. Is it true that I have to root before I can make a stock image of my phone, I also want the aboot backed up because I'm sure I will end up screwing up something or worse Verizon will shove an OTA on my phone and lock me out.... I've searched for the aboot back up found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/guide-vzw-note-4-backup-developer-t2962911
Its telling me I need to root for the backups to work
Not sure what all you guys need to help guide me in the correct direction:
Model Number: SM-N910V
Android: 5.0.1
Baseband: N910VOYU1BOAF
Hardware; N910V.05
Stock I haven't tried to run anything on this phone until I get some help first. I don't want to lose my Unlocked Bootloader.
I found this too:

You do not have to root before you make a backup. The link you mention above is the correct step by step process to install a custom recovery (TWRP) and root the Developer Edition Note 4..http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/development/how-to-custom-recovery-root-t2923340. Keep in mind the first step is to ODIN TWRP, backups and root come after that. To enter recovery you press Power, Vol UP and menu simutaneously and wait for the phone to boot into TWRP recovery. Then follow the on screen menu options to do a backup, restore, wipe etc. If you follow the instructions in that post you'll be find. This link you quoted also guides you to a process to backup your aboot (unlocked bootloader)....strongly recommend you do that soon after rooting your phone also.

Hello friends, I just got a new refurbished rogers(canada) HTC M8 GSM phone. Its totally stock at this moment and would like to do sim unlock,s-off and boot loader unlock. But before i would like to get full back up of my stock.Few questions:
1.How can i do full complete backup of my stock phone in case in future i need to revert back?
2. what are the steps to do s-off,sim unlock and bootloader unlock?
Right now phone says:
Android version 4.4.3
HTC sence version 6.0
software number 2.23.631.2
HTC SDK API level 6.25
kernel version
3.4.0--g523xxxxxx
baseband version
1.19.2133xxxxxxxx
build number
2.23.631.xxxxxxxrelease-keys
Thanks in advance...
Go to HTCDev.com to unlock the bootloader. The process is self-explanatory (just follow the website instructions). There is a writeup on the following guide, if you need help. But honestly, if you can follow instruction, the process is self-explanatory as I mentioned: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
Then, to backup the stock ROM and recovery, follow the instructions listed on the following thread under "How do i backup the stock HTC recovery?" : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
This process will boot custom recovery without actually flashing recovery it to the phone, allowing you to backup stock recovery as well as the stock ROM (if you flash custom recovery before doing this, stock recovery is over-written and therefore can't be backed up). Note that your version's stock ROM and recovery may already be uploaded to the above thread by another XDA user.
Then achieve root by your preferred method (flash custom recovery and flash SU/SuperSU, or use weaksauce, towelroot, etc.). Then use sunshine to achieve s-off (firewater s-off will likely not work, as it was patched some time ago): http://theroot.ninja/
Then after s-off, you can unlock SIM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708572
Thanks a lot redpont73 for your directions!!!Will follow your steps and let you know how things went..Thanks
Ok i unlocked my bootloader with htcdev.com and it says unlocked now.
Now how to backup my stock at this point? I tried this thread you showed me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2701376 but didn't understand fully. but it says :fastboot boot recovery_filename.img (this does not work on the latest 3.xx firmwares !!! we need to get the stock recoveries from the OTA files)"
I am little confused at this point. How can i back up at this point without installing any recovery software like twrp?please guide me.thanks

By placing the custom recovery image in your fastboot folder, you can then boot recovery without actually flashing it to the phone, using the command you quoted. Think of it as remotely running the TWRP software that is still located on your PC (at least I think that is how it works).
Once you are booted into TWRP, you can backup system (stock ROM) and recovery(stock recovery).

Go to the General forum section for the M8, and look at the Index thread (sticky at the top of that forum) to find link to recoveries and other resources, including guides and how-tos. Read up and learn.
Taking the time to familiarize yourself with the basic concepts and processes is much more valuable than someone walking your though step-by-step. I won't walk you through step-by-step, as you will learn very little that way.
The process is not that difficult, anyway. You already used fastboot to unlock the bootloader. Other fastboot commands are not any different in execution. If you can't handle taking it from here, modding the phone probably isn't for you.
With S-on, you aren't going to brick the phone by backing up or flashing recovery. Even with s-off, as long as you only flash things intended for the M8 (and only for the GSM version - not CDMA - to be safe), you will not brick. You can only brick the phone if you damage hboot, radio, or partition tables.

Yes you are right...I will read more and i want to learn and will try to do it myself. If i will have some confusion, i will ask here.Looks like i need more reading.
Now what i am planning to do is:
1. Install twrp
2.Take a full nandroid backup.(will it be enough to save me in future if i would like to go back to stock after S-OFF?)
3.root and s-off.
Does it make sense?

The process to backup stock recovery is easy, by either method we already discussed. If you want to be thorough, backup stock recovery.
Backing up stock recovery and stock ROM is sufficient to return (mostly) to stock. There isn't much else you can do

UPDATE:
I downloaded latest twrp and i booted into twrp .then took full backup. i also took back up using philz touch same way by just booting into philztouch.
Then i tried to root using supersu by same booting into twrp and tried to root.it created a supersu icon on the spring board and then i tried to install it from play store but it errored out and phone rebooted. After that i tried to remove the supersu icon from the phone but just couldnt. Then i thought of restoring stock backup using twrp and it restored it to stock stage.Atleast now i know that my stock backup worked.!!!
Now my question is why did supersu not root my phone?Should i try another method?please advice.thanks

I've never bothered with the play store, just boot the custom recovery and flash the latest SuperSU. That's it... :silly:

Sounds like a brick in the making.
Make sure that you read and understand what you are about to do before you do it.
A nandroid won't always help you.
If I may make a suggestion, don't go S-Off.
I am abandoning the idea of doing S-off after the suggestion from xunholyx above and after reading this http://android-revolution-hd.blogspot.ca/2013/06/do-we-really-need-s-off.html.

thanks redpoint73 for giving me helping hand!! without your help i wouldn't have done it.....
Rito guys,
I have used IOS for the past many years and bought a LG G3 855 (australia 16g, this is the international on yea?) 2 days ago.. I quickly found a website that guided me through the LG Flash tool method of updating to the leaked L version D85519H_00 and away I go! Now what I didn't realize is and as this website explains http://www.androidpit.com/lg-g3-android-update that rooting the device is nye impossible now...
SO, after more and more searching around I have found I needed to flash back to kitkat 4.4.2 and then do a TWRP backup thingy from this install method of a modded/rooted L http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-lollipop-rooted-rom-skin1980-t2936022 then install the rom through recovery? I have had no luck (mainly because I don't what half of the terminology means) doing the modem/backup with TWRP to begin with as most methods need the device rooted (which I can't do now after my first install of L5.0..)
Can anyone clearly paint a picture for me on the steps needed to achieve rooted L5.0?
OR
Is it worth keeping the L5.0 leak version (non rooted) and when LG releases their official version just do a software update and wait for someone to figure out how to root that? (I'm assuming here I can just do a software update on top of the leaked version to upgrade to the LG official here?)
Cheers and thanks for your time guys I'm super excited to be an android user now and no idea what I wasn't sooner!
Jacob
We need to have Android 4.4 KK
Installation:
1. We must do ROOT -
2. Next, you install TRWP
3. We go into Recovery (TRWP)
4. Recovery enter the Wipe and enable - Cache, Data, and we do wipe Dalvik
5. Wipe Exit tab
6. We are entering a Instal
7. We are looking for our files and install one after the other (without rebooting):
1. ROM
2. SuperSU
8. REBOOT SYSTEM
I think I understood everything
L 5.0 + root http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/stock-t2961073

Hey thanks for your fast reply!
Your instructions look spot on for a normal situation but as I mentioned at the start I can not root my device since I installed the leaked L5.0 version, apparently it makes it a lot harder to do..
Also I should mention I can't get MTP working so it makes it even harder to do the TWRP backup without rooting the device first.
This is the only option at this time to have root on 5.0

Flash 4.4.2 KDZ. Root it. Install twrp, etc etc etc.
Yeah mate your best bet would be to use the LG Flash Tool 2014 (Readily available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2797190 ) to flash back your Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM if you want to root it, since without using a custom kernel and then flashing a custom recovery that supports that rooted kernel, we can't yet achieve vanilla root on Android L. Make sure if you flash back an older ROM you do it via CSE (CSE wipes all data on the phone, used for major upgrades, but a normal flash just attempts to update the system and keep your data, useful for small software updates).
Your other option would be to do as NZfoR said above and flash back down to 4.4.2, and then re-flash the already rooted and bumped ROM and kernel he linked you to, therefore giving you root on Android L.
That being said, although we can't get one yet, we've got the best devs in the world here on XDA, so it won't be long before someone finds a bug in the boot-loader that allows us to achieve permanent root (In fact I believe that someone already has and is just working on a way to exploit it).
We've also got the best community here, if you need help for pretty much anything regarding Android and specifically your G3, there's always at least 1 person here who knows how to solve it, so ask questions!
Good luck, you won't regret coming over to the sweet-side of mobile phones
Cheers guys! I had tried downgrading to kk 4.4.2 and tried to stumproot but it said my software had been patched SBD could not be rooted. Like I said I think installing the leaked L5.0 its changed something making it harder to root now..
I'm finding it hard to do the TWRP backup 1. I don't even know what it does or how to do it 2. I've had 2 days android experience haha... Keen to teamspeek or Skype call iDefalt?

My developer edition starting doing boot loops so I odined the stock restore version in https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95857557620392097

Boot into download mode and see if you get "Mode: Developer". If you don't see that then there is a good chance your bootloader has been locked. The only way to recover from a locked bootloader at this point is to flash the aboot backup, if you did an aboot backup.
Titanium Backup will not work unless you are rooted and you can't flash SuperSU unless you have custom recovery (TWRP) if that is the way you're trying to flash SuperSU.
Did you do the aboot backup as strongly recommended in a number of DE threads?

Did you buy a developer edition phone directly from Samsung? Or someone might be selling one they bought from there. Anyway, they can only be got from Samsung for full price. Also pull the battery and it has "Developer Device" written there. Or use the method found in the post directly above yours.
Thanks

I have the 816 a5_chl single SIM version but let me try to help you because I'd like to. First I believe the rooting methods for your device is a bit different then the one for mine so bear with me here. First I would advise against going backwards to kit Kat from lollipop. Lollipop returned the write permissions to the external SD card for apps that were taken away with kitkat and that's just for starters. Lollipop has battery and performance improvements as well. As for doing stock updates you would need to find and reflash your stock recovery back as well as remove any root exploits from your firmware before any signed stock updates could be performed. What was the root method you used on your model ? Mine was to unlock boatloader thru HTC, flash TWRP recovery and from that recovery flash SuperSU zip file from internal storage of phone.
As for backing up you would first run a backup from TWRP to your ext SD card called a full nandroid backup which is basically a snapshot of your whole phone as it is before you flash any other firmware. Enable compression and leave the MD5 check enabled then name your backup and select micro SD card as the location then swipe to run. Titanium Backup app is used to back up apps and data along with texts and call logs. Google's own backups can be setup from your phone settings and back up your contacts and phone numbers mainly. Super Backup app can also back up your calender as well as texts, call logs, etc.... I use all 3 myself plus the TWRP backup that you can restore if something gets messed up and it often can.

Your welcome. Ok, you did good by doing a TWRP backup first. You'd be surprised how many people don't so kudos for that. Second you shouldn't need to find a stock zip firmware file to download as long as your system is pure stock and you've reflashed your stock recovery for your model phone. Those are usually found either here in XDA linked or you just have to try to enter your model found listed in your hboot or in settings under about phone. Once you've verified the correct stock recovery zip file you download it to your P.C.s ADB/fastboot folder and flash it over TWRP then relock your boatloader. Some say they can flash stock updates with it unlocked but most recommend you relock it for it to work. From there assuming the unroot method has worked you should be able to do stock updates from your phone or over a computer using HTCsync assuming nothing else was altered in your firmware system from stock.
You say that unrooting thru SuperSU hadn't worked. How do you know that? Have you used a root checker from the play store to verify? It should work because he wrote that into his app specifically to unroot for stock updates or to use someone else's superuser app.
Also what was your rooting method? I believe your phone is the Mediatek version and the Snapdragon processor in my version had a different root exploit or an extra step from my exploit to get a foothold in your system as the processor is different from mine. You would need too remove that exploit as well I believe as it probably altered some system files to allow SuperSU to use it's exploit to gain root permissions.
Found this link below on the web but can't vouch for whether it works or not. Also search here in XDA forums for unroot method as this link says it compiled the info from XDA. Remember you'll still need your stock recovery reflashed before your can do a stock update as this refers to just unrooting.

I've been going through the learning curve on rooting/custom ROM/etc. This will be my first time to go through this process. I have the QF1 firmware and the latest version for Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 4:
Software Version: N910PVPS4DQF1
Hardware Version: N910P.05
Model: SM-N910P
Android 6.0.1
security patch level: June 1, 2017
I tried calling Sprint to unlock my bootloader, but they thought I was asking to unlock the device. Finally, I got to their tech support and they said they didn't do that, and the guy recommended watching a video on YouTube.
It seems that sometimes the instructions you follow need to be oriented towards the version you have. Would anyone be able to point me to the best instructions to follow?
there seems to be a lot of contradicting information, so I thought some general direction to point me off in the right direction would save me a lot of grief in the long run
My thought was to:
1. unlock boot loader
2. using Odin flash a ROM with Lollipop for the Sprint Note 4, maybe the Omega one?
3. depending on the ROM in #2, then I could automatically get root?
Bootloader on Sprint Note 4 is unlocked already.
Custom ROMs usually include root or alternate methods.
Depending on the ROM you choose and as long as it's OG5 and above, it's recommended to use Odin to flash the stock tar that corresponds to the update that the ROM is based on. Otherwise, you may lose compatibility, network connectivity or camera focus.
Edit: you can find stock tar downloads in a thread for Sprint Note 4 in the general forum. Latest recommended Odin can be found in post 1 or 2 of that thread.
I'm not sure what ROM you're referring to but clean install is best practice for ported ROMs or switching between Android versions or switching to and from CM to stock based ROMs. Data may not be compatible so backing up internal memory keepsakes and wiping internal memory may be necessary, where recommended.
That's the general idea but best to follow OP of the ROM you choose.

How would I go about making my own Custom Rom? I'm thinking of adjusting the Resurrection Remix So it would work on my phone but the specific ROM is on Verizon verison of the Note 4 and I want to port that for my Version for Sprint I know I can change some CSC stuff to get the modems and carriers ready for no signal loss or mobile data or sms issues as I have seen a method for flashing a zip file, but I;m just really curious, as I hope I can rebuild LineAgoe or CM for this Note 4 as I have a lot of time and alot of learning to do.

I've been going through the learning curve on rooting/custom ROM/etc. This will be my first time to go through this process.

To add to samep's comment. Here's a few pointers, in no particular order.
1. You only use Odin on PC to flash stock firmware. Or Twrp recovery.
2. Once you have Twrp recovery, then everything else is done through it.
3. Your very important first thing to do, once you flash Twrp. In Twrp, make a full backup of your phone, especially your EFS partition. Keep in safe place.
And if you want to be even more safe, backup your efs every time you upgrade your firmware.
4. READ, READ, READ! Google is your friend. If learning something risky and new, read from a few different sources, make sure it adds up!
GOOD LUCK!

This cannot be taught in a response.
If your serious about learning then....
Lots and lots of reading, then try smaller stuff first. And work your way up.

Thank you aaron74! Question, would it be better to install Twrp using Odin, backup (w/EFS partition), then downgrade to stock Lollipop using TWRP? Or would the original order Odin > stock Lollipop > TWRP > backup > root be just as good?

I don't think you can downgrade from within Twrp.
But it's definitely safer to install twrp and get your EFS backup first. Just in case. It's extra step but you have your EFS, in case something goes wrong with downgrade. I'm not very knowledge on the downgrade process, never done it.
