Look in the HTC Desire 816 - General forums, there should be a stock recovery thread and a guide on how to return to stock just in case

How do I back up my stock recovery?

US Cellular has been promising Froyo for the CDMA Desire since October, and I'm tired of waiting so I'm going to root it and flash a Froyo ROM myself. I read through the unrEVOked documentation, and it mentions that if I want to install official updates in the future I need to restore the recovery image, but it doesn't tell me how to get it. How do I pull the stock recovery image from my phone so that I can flash it back on should I need to?
You can't actually backup a whole rom without rooting first. You need the custom recovery to do a nandroid backup which will back up the whole rom. If anything does go wrong or you need to reinstall then you can just use an RUU to do it. US Cellular doesn't have an RUU yet but you can use other CDMA RUU's.
So am I to understand that there is no way to back up the stock recovery, as I would have to overwrite the existing recovery just to do backups in the first place?
Yep, root access is needed to back the whole ROM up
To be honest, it's better with root anyway and a lot better when you install a custom rom.... from my experience anyway.

[Q] question about kernels

Hey all, I just have a few quick stupid questions after researching and not coming up with the answers............ Sorry if they have been answered before, I did search for ages before resorting to asking stupid questions
Can I flash a custom kernel onto a HTC ONE X with the stock ROM in place, without modifying the stock ROM?
From what I have found the RADIO is a part of the kernel??..... does this mean I need to find one to suit my country(optus AUSTRALIA) or am I able to flash the radio seperate?
Basicly, Im wanting to add the infamous sweep2wake by show-p1984 to my stock operating system
Thanks in advance
Bootloader
locked/unlocked?
Only possible unlocked
Stock rom
Rooted/Unrooted?
Only possible with root
CWM recovery installed yes or no
Only possible with cwm flashed?
but apart from that yes it can be done
Kernel is flashed seperate from the radio so no issues there
Im just now going through the motions of unlocking bootloader and recovery.... do I just go with the newest version of recovery?
(im following the for dummies guide)
By only possible with CWM flashed, do you mean CWM recovery? or it can be only flashed through CWM?
And im not to sure wether the factory ROM is rooted or not yet
NONO i mean clockword recovery installed..
U need to flash the kernel in fastboot....(bootloader mode)
Just keep on reading and follow ALL the steps
U`ll be alright ( and the stock rom is NOT rooted)
legend ! Thanks heaps, yeah definatly reading everything twice before going ahead

Flashing stock recovery back

Hi, I have a friends HTC One M8 who rooted it and added TWRP recovery and is S-on.
The phone is on the original HTC software version 4.19.61.2 and I have found the stock recovery for this. the phone has never had any other roms installed.
He wants to get the OTA updates and just need to know if it is ok to flash the stock recovery back without any problems.
After flashing the recovery if this is ok, is there anything else we would have to do to get the OTA upates.
Thanks in advance
ugg...
Root causes problems even after the unroot option inside the app.
So he needs a full non rooted stock backup + stock recovery. or a ruu if it's a available to get the phone back to full factory stock
Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
He is on EE, software version 4.19.61.2
Do you have any links for a stock Backup or RUU
Many Thanks
ugg..
Check the general section, there is a dedicated stickied backup thread. And there is one here in the Q&A "how to get back to stock with TWRP backups"
Thank you

Question

Tired of waiting for the MM OTA, I decided to convert my HTC M8 to developer edition.
I've already unlock/root/custom recovery and i got stuck at the s-off. I found out that i need to pay for that and I decided to stop my journey.
Now I'm thinking of flashing a 6.0 MM custom rom based. My question is : What should I do before I flash any custom ROM?
I'm thinking to go back to stock soon and I don't want to mess it up forgeting something.
You need an unlocked bootloader
You need latest lollipop firmware at least when there is no MM firmware yet for your device version - it is a 4.xx.xxx.x firmware
You need to install TWRP 2.8.7.0
You need to install custom ROM (either lollipop or MM base)
Thanks but I think you misunderstand me.
My HTC is already prepared to flash custom rom. I was wondering if i need something to do before i flash my first custom. Something that will help me to go back to stock when i need it.
Make a non-rooted nandroid of your stock ROM. You need it to revert to stock for future OTA or simply back to stock reason.
If you not yet done it, seems it is too late for you because you already root your stock ROM as stated on post #1.
Check my thread link in my signature to see whether there is one non-rooted backup for you.
Yeah, I've already root it
But I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618.
I think maybe this will help me .
Your thread help me too.
Thanks
Err... that link is for M7 ... don't know whether that helps.
