[Q] Google Dialer for HTC One M9 - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm coming to the HTC One M9 from a Nexus 4 on TMO. The Nexus 4 had the Google Dialer and I liked it tremendously more than whats on the HTC One M9, especially with Google Caller ID. I don't want to do a customer ROM however because losing wifi calling is not an option.
Has anyone gotten Google Dialer with Google Caller ID to work on our phone? Any other app store options?

Are you going to root? There is a thread with gpe contacts and dialer in XDA but it is a flashable .zip that replaces the stock HTC dialer. It does work as I use it on my m8.

There is also now a thread as of today with a zip that can be flashed in combination with a custom rom to give you WiFi calling.

[Q] Two questions so far about the Nexus/ICS

Hi everyone,
So I'm relatively new to Android, the Galaxy Nexus is my first non-iPhone, so I'm still getting adjusted. I had two questions so far about the Nexus/Android 4.0:
When I receive picture messages from iPhone users that have multiple pictures in one message, they come through as a video/slideshow with smaller versions of the pictures that I can't save. The same thing happens when they include text with their picture. However, if they just send a picture, it comes through normal size, and as a picture. Is this an Android OS issue, or is it on Apple's end?
I'm using Hullomail for Voicemail, and I have no complaints, but I was curious if anyone has successfully ported the official AT&T apk. I know Google Voice is what most people use, but unfortunately that's not an option for me.
Thanks in advance!
I'm not sure about the first question, but why can't you use Google voice? Works great for me!
My phone is already registered to a different Google Voice number.
The slideshow thing used to happen on my HTC phones, but I'm not sure what types of phones were sending the pictures so I am going to assume it is android-based. That said I haven't tested it yet on the nexus so I could be wrong.
GVoice is awesome!

It will let you register it twice if you set one as mobile and one as a home line

I would get that on my Charge. I thought it was a Touch Wiz feature. I didn't care for that myself.

[Q] "Automatically Lock" on GPe 4.4

I successfully rooted my t-mo HTC one, with S-OFF etc and loaded the KitKat rom from this thread.
I also have a Nexus 4 running KitKat 4.4 as well as a comparison.
Both devices are connected to my corporate exchange server, but under Security-->Automatically Lock on the Nexus 4, I have many choices, from "Immediately", all the way up to 10 minutes.
However, on the GPe HTC One, my only choice is "Immediately". If I drop Exchange, all the choices re-appear.
Anyone know why Immediately is the only choice under the HTC One GPe ROM and if there is a way to fix it?
Thanks!
Think you need to go over to the gsm section for the HTC one. This is the verizon section.

woops, sorry about that. Admin/mod, please feel free to delete this thread!

Stock Google Dialer - no ringing, no loudspeaker

Hi,
Today I've received my HTC 10 and I'm trying to get the 'nearest Nexus experience'. There was no problems with either Now Launcher or Keyboad, but I have some problems with Dialer. The app itself was installed from Play Store (com.google.android.dialer), so no sideloading was necessary. The installed version is 2.05.07_rc4. I've given it all permissions (with settings ones), change default dialer and everything is working except ringing and loudspeaker. I can dial a number, answer a call, talk. There are all notifications.
I've tried sideloading different versions form apkmirror. 2.3.17 fails to install (no necessary libraries), 3.00.04_rc4 installs but crashes. I've also sideloaded Contacts - no problems there.
Can someone had similar problems? Maybe on different phone?
Thanks for any help.
Karol
That's weird. When I go to the Play Store, it tells me the Google Dialer is not compatible with my HTC 10. Also, the version on the store is 2.3.17, how come you have 2.05.07_rc4 ? Which country are you in? (I'm in the US) Why is it a release candidate (I assume the rc part at the end is for that)?
I've tried installing from apkmirror (2.3.17 and 3.00.04_rc4) and the same happens to me; first one doesn't want to install and the latter crashes.
I'm trying as well to make my 10 resemble my former Nexus, so if anyone knows how to make this Google Dialer app work, please, post it here.
Thanks!
I had the same problem. Not sure which version. I ended up going back to the horrible HTC dialler
I also had a problem with the alarm in the google clock app. The alarm tone I selected always seemed to be the default rather than the custom selected one.
I don't know what HTC have done with their firmware. It's been a pretty good experience other than those issues though.

Give the google clock permissions for disk access and it will then be able to use custom "ringtones". This is a common Marshmallow issue. Try giving the google dialer full permissions and see if that fixes your other issues.

I'm in Poland. And yes, Google Play installs 2.05.07_rc4. It's also available from ApkMirror (apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-phone/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-release/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-android-apk-download)
As for the phone - I gave up. It's already sold. All reviewers almost promised the Nexus experience, but it's far from it. It's not like Moto phones, where they take stock Android and add some of their features. It's all rebuild. The quick settings look similar yet different. The same thing is with the settings. Some (Many?) dialogs have Sense not Material look. The typography is wrong. It still is Roboto, but the weights are used differently.
Stock Android is beautiful. Everything is in place, everything works as expected. Sense (8 is it?) look like HTC tried to rebuild/upgrade previous version to look Material. They failed. I'm back to my old Nexus 5.
Ps. One hint about the dialer. When you place a call, two icons appear in the notification bar. One from Google Dialer, one from HTC Dialer. So the built in one is still active, also you can't disable the Contacts/Dialer app. Maybe it's HTC bug and should by reported?
Karol
Sounds weird.
I couldn't install the contacts or dialer through google play, but sideloaded the apks and no problem once I gave the permissions.
The phone rings and loudspeaker is functional.
No issues or bugs so far.
Edit: The HTC dialer does show in the notification, and in the default app I selected the google dialer.
The phone doesn't ring either but I do have loudspeaker during a call.
For me the only part I care about is the dialer. I have the dialer installed and when I call it launches HTC phone app. I get the nice features of search but no bugs. So far it has worked nicely

I got that setup to work like that as well, but I don't like the htc phone app taking over the call. I have Google voice + carrier number on the same phone and the Google phone app lets me know if I'm dialing with Google voice or with my carrier number.

Our only hope is Roms or maybe a HTC Google phone like the m7, that would be so awesome.

Why did HTC feel the need to restrict the access to the phone's dialing functions? (rethorical question)

I've enabled permissions for both phone and storage and it still doesn't seem to allow me to change my alarm to a custom ringtone.

Google just updated the stock dialer, it is now compatible with the HTC 10. Any luck?
I tried this earlier today and the new RC9 won't even install for me. No errors, just a failed message after a brief wait. I tried uninstalling the RC8 first but no change.

I got the same thing on other apps. You have to go into permissions to allow it to modify system settings. I don't remember exactly where it is but since the app never rings I uninstalled it.

Looks like there is an easy fix for this now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66873075&postcount=39
keep in mind it breaks Wi-Fi calling settings ( although Wi-Fi calling still works)

Right... and the OP already had it and was modding to get it to work. Not sure how this is relevant. But yes, of course replacing any system files like the HTC dialer will require root...

After I installed the dialer.zip, I installed True Phone Dialer & Contacts from
Hamster Beat. And set it to my default dialer and is well.
Thanks

Dialer replacements

I kinda hate the HTC dialer, no heads-up notification, looks outdated.
I tried the Google Phone apk but the no Loudspeaker is a huge dealbreaker. (Plus it causes a double notification with HTC's dialer and Google's dialer)
Any other dialer apps that natively work with the HTC 10?

I just don't wanna go through the trouble of unlocking the Bootloader, installing a Custom Recovery and possibly rooting. Too much hassle for a Dialer :S
