Hi there, I'm a beginner in Android app developing; I already have a Nexus 4 that's a great way to test applications, but I was looking for a good and cheap old device running Android 2.3 or 2.2 to test compatibility of the applications with smaller and older device.
I'd like to spend as less as possible, also a used device is ok for what I'm going to do.
If you have suggestions please let me know.
And if you're in Italy, in the area of Milano or Novara and have a device like the one I'm looking for to sell contact me.
Thanks for the attention guys!
The Galaxy Y is pretty cheap. Or there's htc Wildfire.

For testing puroposes I bought HUAWEI IDEOS X3, which was realy cheep (4 months a go).
It has Android 2.3, Qualcomm 600 MHz, 480 x 320. This resolution was minimum for my app.
I looked that it is still in stores.
Why not just use an AVD (the emulator)?

I'm not very comfortable with it, and the virtual display seems to me always too small or too big...so I'd like to have a sufficent device for testing if the applications I'm building will be usable on such screens.
The three suggestions I collected here are leading my search for an affordable one. Really thank you!

Because it is an emulator. Some methods will behave differently than on a real device. Countless threads on Stack prove it.
It's slow. It's painfully slow. Sub 4GB machine and we're back in 1999.
Screen device looks differently than the screen of your device.
If one needs to use an emulator use manymo. Emulators are limited to 10 minutes on free accounts and you need upload it to the servers (nifty tool provided) which takes a bit. But they have a broad range of screen sizes and OS versions available for a device. On in your browser.
HTC Wildfire G8 is ldpi.and has a broad spectrum of ROMs to test apps on. ZTE Blade is dirt cheap too, battery is not the best, but has a higher dpi.

I actually don't use the emulator myself lol. Mainly because it's slow on my laptop (1gb ram and Intel pentium M). I wrote some batch scripts to very quickly install or update my apps using adb

Hi,
so question is:
(Fire TV) Snapdragon 8064 + Adreno 320 VS Amlogic S802 + Mali-450MP6 (Tronsmart Vega S89)
for 1080 TV?
which is better? support more video, audio formats?

Going on past experience, not having used the Vega, I would say the Qualcom is the better processor. I consider the Amlogic processors great work horses. Not always the fastest but strong.

The Vega seems a bit to spend $30 to $60 more just for 8GB more storage, but I am sure it will comes down. I was reading some stuff and even though benchmarks are not the be all end all it scores a lot lower, but that goes back to what I think about Amlogic processors. Honestly if both had been $99 I might have considered the Vega, but I have Prime so that would have tipped it.

Vega 8gb = $105 or $114 with shipping
Vega 16gb = $120 or $128 with shipping
VS
Fire TV 8gb = $99
so not big difference... just what to get more power
Also one big plus of Vega - it has Miracast

Tough times. I am a Minix Neo X7 owner, and if it wasnt to freaktab.com, it would end up being a useless box. I use a KitKat rom which has really revolutionized my Minix but nevertheless, i want to extend and upgrade
BUT...i have conditions. For as why? cause ive seen various devices that amazed me in something, and totally destroyed it with something else. Let me explain myself...
Geniatech has a box that can fit a 2.5/3.5 HDD with a Sata 3 controller, and even has an eSata interface, want the drawback? It runs Android 2.3
Ive seen devices with even analogue A/V output for old TV's (or ppl who prefer stereo over surround, like me), drawback, stupid manufacturers scared to release sources due to the competition in China not giving a damn of stealing.
not to mention rip offs, nearly all RK3188 use 802.11b/g/n chips. when you see 802.11n and no 802.11a, that means it is a draft 11n chip, DRAFT VERSION wifi chips, just amazing. Lately RK3188-T has been found, a locked CPU that does not offer more then 1.4ghz, yet they are sold as 1.6 ghz. and the best one, since we deal with unreleased sources, every time they release a new platform, the old one is totally ignored. At least phones are supported for up to 2-3 years, my Minix is not even a year old and as soon as X8 is out it will be forgotten. and we are talkin about Minix, the company that does the best community support, which is still BULL SH!T.
anyway, Fire TV is future proof as they have started on the right foot (especially by releasing sources), AMLogic just kicked RK3188 out of the game, nevertheless, RK3288 which is ringing the door bell is very powerful, featuring the best Mali GPU that seems to be used only by the RK3288 platform (something specifically done for RK, might end up causing headaches on the community) and even supports HDMI 2.0 which is a prerequisite if you are going for 4K.
This area of products is growing, and the manufacturers better listen to the feed back of the guinea pigs.
I would pay 200 Euros without hesitation if a device featured these as fundamental:
USB 3.0
Gigabit Ethernet
enough space to fit a 2.5" SSD or mSata/mPCIe so we can get rid of slow EMMCs
802.11 a/n/ac - b/g/n with at least 4 Antennas
i'd even go further with details such as dual hdmi/dp, or hdmi in (rk3288 has it), or multiple Ethernet ports. You'd have an Android Computer which acts as a HTPC and as a NAS as well and even as a Wireless Router and Switch.
PS, regarding the vega, s802 does not support DTS and DD, s802-h does, Minix X8 will be released with an elite version that beholds the new s802-h.

well, if you are willing to make your own case, in return for having something that is completely unlocked
http://www.inforcecomputing.com/product/moreinfo/ifc6410.html
(basically same chip as in firetv, but ddr3 vs lpddr2, plus sata and gigabit ethernet)
of course, you are then DIY on the software front.. shouldn't be much of a problem if you just wanted xbmc.

Snapdragon 600, same chip as the one in Galaxy S4, that is powerful. Unfortunately anything that as to do with coding and electronics is above my scope of knowledge , it does look quite good this one. Above that, i dont use XBMC tbh and i use it as a Desktop Replacement Tool in combination with a LED TV and a Logitech k400 keyboard. Of course i dont do desktop-class processing, but it is enough for my needs to explore the internet, basically a basic computer .
ps, Fire TV has LPDDR2?

yeah, it has cell phone type low-power ddr stacked on top of the snapdragon 600, vs external DDR3 chips (which I assumed would be cheaper and sufficient since there isn't really a constraint on pcb size..)
but in the end, I guess the different memory won't make so much difference. The firetv does have larger emmc (iirc, ifc6410 was only 4G or 2G?), but that never bothered me as I just use a ssd harddrive anyways.
Why FTV and Not a 802 device
I been using different boxes like the Matricon and RK3188 based ones. Rockchip suck at video but Amlogic excel at video playback. The problem is buggy firmware and that my friends is what makes or breaks a device. I was looking into an S802 but the only worthy one seems to be the upcoming Minix 8 with S802-H. One thing I like about the Roku and FTV is how well they behave and I don't miss the buggy Chinese devices' firmware.
I own a FTV (living room), a Roku and a Chromecast (bedroom, Roku for almost everything and the Chromecast to stream XBMC from android using Moliplayer and Y2Cast free app). Even though Roku have a dual core, it kicks any other box including the FTV at handling video and working with Plex. If there was XBMC for Roku I would considered it the perfect box.
The FTV handles video very well but the user interface is not as smooth as the Roku. Plex sucks on the FTV but XBMC works great (I'm on 13.1 RC-1). Instead of using Plex on FTV I now access my WD My Cloud storage using XBMC via SMB and it works like a charm.
So in short, I will keep my FTV as I'm very pleased with it specially because of XBMC, except if in the future there is an XBMC channel for Roku (doubt it) then I will trade my FTV for another Roku.
I've just received my Onda V919 Air 3G, only the 32GB version is in stock at the time of writing this which I got from Geek Buying here: Mod edit: link removed (commercial advertisement not allowed) There seems to be supply issues as the system was delayed a few times by Onda and the 64GB model is still about 2 weeks off from shipping out.
I think it's a promising looking system that could do with some custom roms and XDA Love The OS switch button seems to just reboot the tablet in the OS, it's not really a non reboot on the fly OS switch like Onda claim it is! It's only a bit faster than the Teclast OS dual boot switch due to not having the dual boot menu to go through. However if you want to boot to Android and you shutdown in Windows, you have to load Windows then do the switch, no direct menu on boot to jump to Android, this is slower than Teclast's approach!
Edit: The latest bios update adds a dual boot start up selector menu if you hold volume up on boot.
First impressions:
So far my initial impressions are generally good, the system is more of an iPad Air clone than the X98 Air 3G is in terms of its looks. I''ll be putting the tablet through it's paces so far I can report that:
Pros:
Nice build quality, better than my X98 Air 3G (Feels more solid)
Captive home button for Android and Windows start button is a nice addition.
Light rom for a Chinese tablet.
Fast Hynix 32GB eMMC drive - 160mbs read and 80 write)
Cons:
Slightly larger gap (0.1-0.2mm?) between the screen and touch panel Vs the Teclast X98 Air 3G
No HDMI output
Some connectivity issues with my home Wireless N router, a few limited connections in Windows.
Battery life a good 1-2 hours less than the Teclast X98 Air 3G depending on use.
You have to remove the plastic top cover when removing sd cards and your Wifi and 3G aerial is there, so you will loose signal!

This one might have HSPA capabilities with T-Mobile in the US. I am hoping someone can confirm soon.

No Gps and no hdmi out. I'm having issues with Windows and a limited connection on Wifi or it disconnecting, Android however runs fine. Play Store works out of the box and the rom is nice and responsive.
After Windows updates I ran out of disk space for some reason, I'm doing a factory reset. I had around 8GB free to start with.

By the way, if you haven't noticed, you get $20 discount if you enter your email.
There are some extra components if you are willing to expand your geekbox, such as a screen display (2048x1546) or an extra circuit with extra I/O connectors. This is surely a promising project.

Yet to be seen in the field so unsure at the moment how any of the software performs.

Subscribing, this box is bad a$$ its got a 2.5" HDD port on the landing ship. I have a 256gb Kingston SSD just waiting for a project like this. I bought a nexus player on sale at Walmart with plans on expanding storage via micro usb and making it into an emulator slash Kodi player but the connection to the micro usb is just to slow and stutters so I couldn't get all the games i wanted to install on it, but this beautiful devices looks as if it will run all the emulators I want and stream movies just fine. I wonder if reicast (dreamcast emulator) will work on it.

worth noting, it comes pre-rooted too, and does not share the recovery partition issues of some other streaming devices -- recovery is safe on it's own partition just like phones and tabs.

Yeah I really like that 2.5" sata connector as well. Too bad we cant use that to install Android and Ubuntu onto, that would be most incredible. Would love to see how Android performs on a real fast storage device. I'd buy that NP off of you if your not going to use it, lol. I need to get one of those someday soon.
Recently purchased a hp pavilion eh1070wm laptop from Walmart as it was on sale for 599$ and needed a upgrade my 2011 MacBook Pro well technically mid 2010 but was manufactured in early 2011. The hp has as base 8gb of ram but can be upgraded to 32gb of ddr 4 3200mhz and can actually handle a 2tb Samsung evo 970 nvme drive as I thought with that capacity and faster speeds vs original that it would overheat apparently not which I’m glad it can handle it just fine so far. Went from 512gb to 2tb and ram upgrade as mentioned before . Well if I’m allowed since there’s barely any reviews for it out in the wild I will do one if this gets enough votes, and people wanting me to do so. Forgot to mention it has a AMD Ryzen 5700u with boost clock up to 4.2 ghz though base is 1.8. Hopefully this helps someone wondering about this model. Geekbench 5 scores and how it looks are in the attached images. If anyone wants a review of this laptop be free to let me know if I’m in the green to proceed

One more thing this laptop can run Linux but a few caveats. For the Wi-Fi you need a Linux kernel module driver for the rtl card which I’m on my phone, so tomorrow I will tell you guys which card it has. Hopefully the next Linux kernel release adds this card for support if not no real big deal at least for me. Also it states it comes with a intel wireless card if you look up the laptop model on hps site, but if your like me and bought from Walmart new than you may get the Realtek version. One more thing it does indeed come with windows 11 not 10 as it stated, but your shipment may come with 10 and the intel wireless card so
Also for those that may have this laptop, look here for help In getting Linux running as someone on GitHub and Reddit that has a Lenovo laptop with similar specs got it working but needed to do a few things but it’s possible at least. It’s a wonderful windows 11/10 business laptop out of the box. Also it can do some light gaming like forza 5 at medium and a setting or two at high with about 33-40 fps at 1080p and halo master chief collection with all halo games so far on normal with 45-60 fps. I’m gonna stop as I basically did a mini review.

I saw something in the forum rules about no promotion so I’m just making sure. I see many others doing device reviews so I’m guessing it’s fine to do so.

Hi! I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop and this model caught my attention because of the technical specifications. I have a question, how is the battery life? I'm going to give it heavy use for development (nodejs and javascript) under Ubuntu 20.04. You recommend me ?

I would suggest running latest the Linux kernel on which ever distro you decide to run. I Found latest ubuntu 20.04 lts works well with Kde plasma haven't tested other distros but one thing to consider is that the Wifi Chipset is a RTL8852AE Wifi 6. Some others come with the intel one I just got a bit unlucky but after looking for the kernel module for this and researching I found as long as you do tethering to the laptop from a phone or connect a WIFI dongle temporarily that's all ready in the kernel and follow the instructions the internal wifi will work. Everything else Audio, Usb C, Trackpad, Keyboard, Web Cam thought only 720p but hardware fault, and etc works out of the box at least. Heres the wifi driver.

Battery life on power saver or balanced CPU governor is about 4 to 5 hours depending on use. If you decide to go for performance than battery life is more like 2 to 3 with heavy use. I mainly bought this laptop as a desktop replacement which works great for me because the Usb C does HDMI and I have the laptop screen so I have a total of 3 screens when needed and the Cpu, Apu, and Memory for great performance comparable to the Ryzen 7 5700G but more like the AMD Ryzen 5 3600G which is perfect for me when it comes to compiling and such. I usually use this laptop plugged in with my monitor setup except when I need to go somewhere which these days and remote work is usually never especially with Covid. Some point I plan to organize this thread or create one for reviewing this Laptop. Depending on what people want I will probably just keep this as is and change the title/heading to HP Pavilion EH1070WM Laptop review. Also sorry its been a month I have been busy lately with online college along side with work.
