[Q] SD card as primary install location - Lolipop - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've come across this tutorial which shows you how to set your primary storage to your external hard drive HERE. I open a terminal emulator and run these commands as I was having problems running from ADB. After checking with pm get-install-location, i get 2-external. but I still have no space to install on my 64GB SD Card. am I missing something? I'm starting to wonder if this is setting the location to my emulated SD card.
Could someone help out?

The blog post is from November 2012 which is ancient history in Android development. I don't think you can expect it to work on Lollipop.

no sd card access in xdandroid

Hello world. I have xdandroid running on my tilt 2. Im using itt right now to psot this. Newayz, when i got to menu, storage there is no sd card listed I also cant seee my sd cccard when plugged into usbon my puter. However, if i go into terminnal and run df -h i can see that the sd card is the first mounted device mounted at /sdcard. I can also use the cd /storagecard andd then ls to see everything on my card. I need tto be able to acccess files from my computer on my phone to ggetg psfreedom running. Im running the latest stable build (updated through android launcher about 15 minutes ago) any help is greatly appreciated
USB mass storage won't work until we're able to unmount the SD - IE when we're not running Android off of the SD...?
You really need to learn how to use search my friend...
If you download Astro or some file explorer, you should be able to see what's on the SD card within Android. If not, you need to format your card again with the HP Tool, GParted, basically anything but the default Windows one.
If you're having psfreedom issues, post in that thread. I'd also recommend reading that thread.
Oh, and use search!
awesome thanks......no problems using psfreedom just didnt know if there was a faster way of putting files on the sd card.......like not booting into winmo to put files on it and then booting back into xdandroid.......would have used search but was on my phone with edge connection and didnt have the patience...........POSTING A QUESTION WILL BE MY LAST RESORT FROM THIS POINT ON XD.......thanks again

[Q] External SD card access by 3rd party apps

I have read many pages of info on the restricted access to ext SD cards in Kitkat, and many promises that in Lollipop access could be granted by the user for all third party apps to write to any sd card file / tree.
But none of these articles have actually explained (in understandable terms) how to do this.
Can anyone tell me how we are supposed to grant access to external sd card by third party apps?
I would love to know as well. I'm debating between ordering the 32GB version from gearbest.com, versus waiting for the 64GB version. I would buy the 32GB version if I knew I could install apps to the external SD card. Maybe this is only possible with root and specialized ROM/kernel. Either way, it'd be nice if someone could shed some light on it.

Just to be clear, I can move "moveable apps" to the Sd card without any problem, obviously this is a restricted list withing the non-rooted version, but that is not my problem. Similarly, all the preinstalled apps like camera, google play music can successfully write to the Sd card with no additional access required.
My problem is that downloaded apps which should have the authority to modify/write files to the SD card such as MP3 tag editors, are not able to do so.
According to Poweramp, their app can gain permission to do this, but when I get the prompt to "grant access", my Sd card doesn't appear in the list of memories to which I can grant the access requested.
The purpose of my post was to see if (as suggested by some reports on Android 5.x) we can grant access to write/edit files on the Sd card at a generic level instead of doing it in each app, given that the developers of apps at the moment seem to be struggling with this.
I got my Zenfone 2 in the mail today from Amazon US. I'm not able to authorize any 3rd party apps to write to my external SD. ES File Explorer and Quickpic both send me to Android's baked in file manager to grant access to external SD card, but it doesn't show up for me to select. May as well still be on Kitkat. Very disappointing.
root needed : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix&hl=fr
This is the same old kitkat bug so this fix work also on LP 5.0 (i'm using it) and should be solved on 5.1..

Interesting if you boot into trwp can that see your sd card? So under storage the sd card isn't visible at all? Have you tried formatting it?

Yes, I can see it fine under TWRP. I thought maybe it couldn't recognize exFAT, so I formatted it to EXT4. But it's still not showing up at all.

That is weird, do you have another android peripheral that you could prospectively format the card in and try? Alternatively you could wipe and reinstall. I blew away the android internal storage and installed from my SD, just about everything works except the sd storage option. That's an issue storage and app wise so I may go back to marshmallow lineageos if I can't sort it.
Failing that back to stock lollipop should that fail.

I don't have another android device, but I do have a linux machine, (actually, I only run Linux in my home), and I can read and write the card no problem in my desktop machine. I haven't tried it on my HTPC/Plex server yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. On stock Lollipop, I can see the card, but it's read only. Oh, I should have been clearer. I can see the card on the tablet, but it doesn't display anything. It says "contents not found", and I can't enable writing to it for Root Explorer.

That is weird you got me stumped, other than a rebuild I got nothing. Try the card in a mate's phone if possible better than wiping the unit first.
If that doesn't work I got nothing. Truth be said I'm no expert, I try my best.
Hi all
I updated the Lineageos ROM the AOSP I had no hardware issues or software issues on the OS. However please note that if you use this ROM for some reason you will lose the TWRP Recovery.
I installed the AOSP ROM 7.1.1 first, didn't reboot and then installed the Gapps file, upon reboot it stayed on the splashed screen, so I then booted into the standard recovery and wiped/factory reset the unit, all good since and it is running smoothly, just wanted you to let you know that the Lineage ROM isn't the only option.
I also had the options for the SD card and UI System tweak was also there, good luck. If anyone wants assistance I am happy to assist.
Soks

Hey mate I found an alternate fix and everything works, look at AOSP rom and let me know if you have any questions.

I have also a problem with the SD card. I have the newest build and the SD card is seen in the settings and also in file manager can read/write, but other apps somehow don't see it, I cannot set the camera to save photo to external storage, also in Google play music I cannot choose to store music to external card, the options are not there. On my Galaxy S5 also with Lineage it works perfectly. Secondly, in the settings I can only format the SD card as portable, not as internal, but that would not bother me if the apps would see the card and I could use it as storage.
Solution for sd card write issue?
Did you ever find a solution? I have the same devices and exactly the same problems.

Have the same problem on my SM-P605 - have had problem since at least the 20170713 nightly build when I started using LineageOS (am currently running 20170830 nightly).
The SD card appears under settings - I can format and eject the SD card, it appears under /mnt/media_rw/76AC-17ED, but
doesn't appear as a SD card in Amaze file manager
doesn't appear as a SD card in ESExplorer (only Internal Storage appears on the home page)
I cannot set the camera location to save photos on it
doesn't appear under /storage (i.e. /storage/76AC-17ED)
It's as if the storage is mounted, but isn't flagged as being a SD card.
Any ideas -- anyone??

I think I found a solution your problem. Well, it worked for me.
Firstly I backed up my SDCARD
Then went to Settings, Storage Settings tabbed on SD card and tab on options [three dotted things].
Formatted my sd card as internal, when I went back to my applications there was an option to move them to external.
[WARNING]One problem is that if you format it as internal it will not show as different storage systems on your pc WILL SHOW AS SHARED STORAGE!!!!
******** I Had So Many Issues I Would Not Recommend It *********
Hope that helps you

Thanks for the suggestion - but didn't work.
When I click the three-dotted-things only option I see is (under Storage settings) is "Format". I format the card - but still cannot move apps to it or set as camera location.

I cannot set the camera location to save photos on it
I cannot move apps to the SD card
I can access the information on the card, but cannot use it as a SD card (with the camera or by moving apps to it).

Manual Fix
Hi.
I just got it running on Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (LTE).
This guide worked for me: modaco.com / news / android / heres-how-to-configure-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632
Guide also referenced in this German HowTo: androidpit.de / micro-sd-als-internen-speicher-formatieren
I did the 50:50 format on my 200GB SD card.
Please remove the blanks in the links. Had to put them in because forum software did not allow me to include links.

Have you cloned a failing SD card that was formatted for internal storage?

Hey guys,
HTC 10 user. Not even a year into my 128GB MicroSD card's life and it's forcing write-protection. I think it's about to die. I can read off it. I can't write.
This SD Card was formatted as internal storage and is encrypted.
I bought a similar 128GB MicroSD card and I'd like to simply clone the image to the new SD card.
Has anyone SUCCESSFULLY done this?
I've attempted it and I pop in the new SD Card and it doesn't detect the card. It simply asks me to insert a card, like the card doesn't even exist.
I've actually tried TWO cloned 128GB cards - they aren't detected.
From what I can tell, I'm doing identical clones of the original MicroSD so I am not sure what I am missing. I'm using a cheapo freeware utility to do the clone in Windows. I don't have the utility name in front of me and I'm not home at the moment.
I have two more things I'd like to try, but I don't know if it's a futile effort: I'd like to try a dd clone from a linux live cd. I'd also like to try EaseUs clone utility, but I fear that's some kind of trial and I'm going to have to shell out some $$ to utilize it.
I know I can unload the original SD's contents to a PC, toss a new card in there, format, and start fresh...download all the play store, f-droid apps again, likely re-download all my audible books, drag my music back onto the card from the PC, and start a-new. That isn't my question, though.
I'm really wondering if I can clone an encrypted, internal-storage SD. I don't WANT to have to download my apps again. I don't want to have to rebuild caches and whatever else has been thrown onto my MicroSD.
Thanks!
I've done this before using clonezilla and it worked fine, no issues at all.
It's not as user friendly as a windows application probably.... but it gets the job done by doing an exact copy.
It even has a mode to keep reading on broken sectors (when you go into advanced mode), that way you can make the best copy possible.
You can read some instructions here
I did it directly from 1 card to another by inserting the source card into an adapter with the readonly slider lock thing to make sure I didn't write empty data to my source.
You can also first create an image from the source and then write the image to the new card.
Please keep in mind to not insert both cards at the same time when using Windows, it will crash Windows.
Windows doesn't understand that there could be 2 drives with the same ID's connected at the same time

SD card as internal storage

Hi everyone?
Does anyone know how to set an SD card as internal storage? I tried loot all over the settings and the developer settings and nothing. Would love to get some help here.
Hi, I found a way to do this a few months ago in a OnePlus X XDA thread.
Just run this ADB command:
Code:
adb shell sm set-force-adoptable true
After that, the option to format SD card as internal storage should be available in system settings.
Has anyone been able to confirm if this works for N100? This will help me decide if I should buy N100.
It worked on the EU version running Android 10. I haven't tested it on Android 11.
Works on Android 11
Yes, I know. Just flash the ZIP file which I attached here in Recovery and then you will be able to format SD card as Internal Storage.
*** If it is not working, you must need to FORMAT DATA to delete the encryption, so before of that - make a backup of all your files ***
I tested it on Android 13 and it is working perfectly.
Then you can use for example an app: APP2SD (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd) from Google Play to move apps to adopted storage (SD CARD)
