I have decided to research the net a little about the M9 camera since I am fairly.. disappointed by the sensor. It was actually easier to find information on this than Sony's IMX240 and Samsungs ISOCELL so I couldn't do a good comparison with datasheets. One thing I did find, the Toshiba does this funky thing where it takes photos with interlaced exposures to maximize dynamic range. This in turn makes the photos look like an interlaced "video" in dark areas which are very gruesome. I tried editing a RAW photo in a dark setting and no matter what I did, it was horrible. But daylight photos are amazing! So that's a huge plus.

So the darks will always be like that no matter the software ? I'm assuming since the interlacing happens at the hardware level?
Thats the way it looks like since all the information I found I was searching for the T4KA7. But it might be possible to program the register settings of the T4KA7 which might be able to turn off the interlaced option if Toshiba provides that option. But the downside of turning this off is, your dynamic range will fall (maybe up to a whole stop).

I had heard early on there were two sensors that have been used. Did you happen to come across that info too?

Two different sensors for the M9? That I did not see while searching. The only other references I found was that the T4kA7 was replacing the T4k46 which is also a 20MP sensor but with slightly larger pixels at 1.2um each vs 1.12um on the M9.
Can anyone confirm camera on M9 is 20mp or 20.7mp

Late reply but nonetheless: T4KA7 is 20.7 MP and T4K46 is 20.00 MP. Source
Interesting bit in that article: if shipments of T4KA7 started only on that day, March 5th 2015, that was incredibly close to release date of the M9. Super tight schedule. It would have me impressed about manufacturing logistics. Really.

Is this a software problem? 5mbpx and 8mbpx shouldn't be this huge of a difference.
Did you let it focus? I've taken fantastic pictures.

Yup, manual focus by touching on "Toast".

What exactly is your problem with those pictures?
Focus point is different in both pictures btw, the darker pic has it on the "Lenovo" and the lighter picture in front of the cup, I think.
Both really. The camera module isn't all that great and better software makes a difference. I rested the MIUI camera software, camera FX and stock and stock software was by far the worst. That being said my old incredible took better pictures overall with the MIUI app.

Taking a picture of a scene with a lot of black and white can confuse the metering system of camera every easily. You would need to frame exactly the same scene to compare them. The camera is trying to average the whole frame to 18% grey, so if you have a lot of black in the scene, then black part will be closer to grey than black. A lot of white part will also be closer to grey than white.
From sample pictures I've seen GN's camera seems to lack some contrast, but gets more details out of darker area than other cameras, which also induces more noise in a poor lighting situation.
Not sure if this will do justice, hope it's not too compressed.

I think this picture also shows what I said. It shows more details from shadow areas than pictures from other phone cameras, but because of that it appears to be lack of contrast (washout look if you will). I think it's definitely correctable via software if they choose to do it.

thanks static and koolbon i think you might have nailed it. i will do another test on dark and light - this time letting the camera meter the same way as the NS. in my first test, the GN metering/focus was on the cup.
its hard to take the exact same frame, NS had the camera offset from centre.
Even in the small hours of the morning when the world is asleep, our cities are constantly illuminated. To the naked eye, neon-lit buildings and streets may appear drab and indistinct, but when captured through the lens of the Huawei Maimang 5, the lights and action of the city come to life in vibrant color.
Worn down by the bustling pace of city life, we often forget to appreciate our surroundings. Every time we walk past an empty street or towering skyscraper, we’re missing out. Next time you’re out and about after dark, try pausing for a moment to take in the beauty of the urban nightscape.

Low-light photography is one of the best tests of a camera’s optics. Equipped with nifty features such as optical image stabilization (OIS), the Maimang 5 comes into its own league in the evening, making it an ideal choice for night owls.
The Maimang 5’s star feature is its camera, which sports a large 16 MP Sony sensor. This is 20% more than the Maimang 4, giving rival handsets a run for their money. The back side-illuminated (BSI) sensor layout lets in more light to produce brighter, punchier night-time shots with richer detail. Moreover, the ultra-fast hybrid autofocus takes just 0.3s, while 3-axis OIS technology corrects hand shake to prevent blurring. Other improvements include a dual lens coating which lets in more light and curbs lens flare, ghosting and noise. The Maimang 5’s low-light feature set is crowned by a dual-tone LED flash, which casts a more natural light on subjects.
Below are some sample night shots of the Maimang 5 in action.
Even in low-light conditions, the camera picks up considerable detail.
The colors in this shot are vivid, without looking overexposed.
This photo has a mixture of light and dark areas, creating strong contrasts.
Compose arty shots by framing your subject against a dark backdrop.
honestly.. the camera of this phones sucks in low light..
Huawei is frikking darn good to publish a lot of bla bla bla about their phones and are very very good at posting A LOT of pictures about their camera and camera app
ITS NOT THAT GOOD....poor quality in low light with Nova plus...ive disabled the huawei photo app and using a better one from playstore !
instead of posting a lot of pics on facebook/gplus ect. and all other websites, why dont HUAWEI responds to our different problems explained here...
explanations on new firmware releases...why some things are not working since firmwares were released
why is huawei NOT responding to our emails/bug reports weve sent to the company ???
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Certainly not as good as iPhone or Pixel. But for a budget phone, this is hard to beat. Portrait mode doesn't always blur the correct areas. Auto mode definitely is noisy and when you zoom in, often a lot of definition is lost.
But despite this, this camera is much better than many other phones. You will not hate this camera. It may not be the best you ever use either though.

Pretty much on the dot... For it price, I don't think you will get any better. For the manual mode, I believe it will beat phone out of this price range as well.
I am having some ptoblems when i try to review photos by native camera App.
Many times the last picture comes above the previews one.

Anyone have latest asus pixel master apk for zenfone 3 zoom?
I'm really liking the phone - my only criticism would be that I find indoor pictures are too "warm" (yellow) but I suppose I'll need to learn how to play with manual mode for that. My previous phone handled indoors much better (Moto X Play, not known for its camera).

You can go into manual mode and adjust the white balance.
A camera with potential.
I love the camera in this phone.
Hardware wise it has same or in some cases greater abilities than galaxy s7 edge or iphone 7 plus.
The real problem I see here is software. It doesn't do justice with the hardware. Auto mode is rubbish.
But and the but is pretty BIG.
If you know your manual mode. You can do miracles with this phone.
(Remove space from link to access it.... I am not allowed to add outside links yet.... Sorry for that.)
And for the selfie camera and portrait images I would suggest you to use google camera port drive. google.com/open?id=1IEf-BZQdk_SH3WVG3aev05pdiRpVqW68

Is this on the latest update
Really liking the macro, even though most people say it's lacking compared to the S21 Ultra.

Like this one a lot. A lot of odd colors in the image and it balanced it well (the green and magenta in the backdrop).
I'm quite impressed by a quickly taken nightshot (on a fast moving train, approx 80km/h). OxygenOS 11.2.2.2.
Ultra wide
I just got my phone yesterday and i'm now testing how well it performs. First impressions is that yes it can perform very well even in dim lit situations. As i always shoot RAW this one is shot as such using the Pro mode and then processed in Capture One Pro.
Pics are really looking great! Can't wait to get the device...
One more shot, this one from inside a local church. Shot in RAW and edited with Capture One Pro. There were so little noise i didn't even bother to remove it, just a bit of sharpening and keystoning to straighten the lines and then the usual adjustments with exposure, curves and shadows & highlights adjustments.

Would like to see some pictures of faces (with stock camera app). With my op7t, I was VERY disappointed with the pictures of my kids (with the OOS camera), very blurry and smudgy. Switched to GCAM and totally fine.

What setting you used? The hand artifact looks weird. I understand it is because of the movement (or a hand of a ghost of dead movie producer?), but how the hell it created this weird edge/highlight is beyond me.
Hi,
thinking about getting an fold4,
i'm wondering if anyone could share some full jpg/dng samples? Just landscape or city scene or something
Hard to find some, i just found some processed/resized images here and there in review.
Would make me happy
Thanks & have a nice sunday
I've actually being comparing the photos from the 4 with my old S21U. Essentially the S21U shots are a tiny bit better, but not enough 4 is surprisingly close. Excluding x10 optical zoom ofcourse.
No perceivable shutter lag, though AF isn't as quick as on the S21 U, especially for close up subjects.
Overall am very happy with the shots out of the Fold.
x3 lens full res jpg, first is HDR shot, 2nd portrait mode hand held.

Main lens portait mode and night mode.
thanks a lot,
the grass is not really there, just a muddy greenish plane
but hdr and 3x zoom, still seems quite wide for 3x lens.
the second shot looks better, but. even there is dithering?/ too less color resolution?
portrait mode else looks quite ok to get photoraphs without too much crazy-going colors?
s20 ultra pictures always looked so unrealistic.

If you are talking about the sun set shot, the exposure was unbelievably challenging, I'm actually really happy with what the camera was able to produce. To the naked eye, all you can see is blinding sunlight .
Here are some 'normal' shots, the over warm colors is simply a Samsung thing....see below, wide angle, normal, and x3. These shots are basically the same as what my S21 U would do. Clearly no x10 optical.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the cameras on the Fold 4.
I also have the S21U and I think the HDR is better on the Fold 4.
Maybe the CPU.
Anyways I took good looking pictures, that was a thing I was worried about
Next time I'm gonna take both my phones to make a real comparison.
Here is some samples in 12 mpx.
