So as a person who has ranted on this board before on how ****ty 4.0.2 was, I just wanted to give my thoughts on 4.0.4
The main point I want to make is that this update is really really really good!
Good Points:
-WAY Smoother overall.
-Browser Is WAY smoother and much better at rendering pages properly (Big thing for me since I constantly use the browser throughout my day).
-I don't think chrome is even necessary at this point. They will probably just merge the two.
-Camera seems much better, although my not a huge photo guy.
-Battery life is incredible! On 4.0.2 I would barely make it till the end of my day (6pm-9pm). Right now I still have 68% left. My results aren't the norm since, I rarely use the phone for long periods of times. But the difference is definitely noticeable in my daily useage.
-Switching between 3G/4G seems much better now. Everything tends load quicker now. (Twitter, browser, pulse, etc.)
There are other good points, but these are what most matter to me.
Bad Points:
-Still a slight lag between pushing multitask button and the apps showing up. But it is much improved over 4.0.2
-Some slight lag when opening app-drawer (transition is not smooth, but not bad either) However in app-drawer everything is smooth
-Minor gripe that might only bother me, is that the calender widget now shows the colored squares that represent different calendars in the middle of the box for each event, I thought it looked much better when it was smaller and in the top left corner.
There might be others, but these are what really bug me.
So yea, I think this is great update and this how the nexus should have launched.
Btw I am curious about what SMP PREEMPT Mar 13 means under kernel version?
Thanks for taking the time to read this. =)
In the secret menu (you can access dialing *#*#4636#*#*, in the first section) It is selected 'WCDMA Preferrer' or GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL)?

Are you using a live wallpaper? I noticed this too until I switched to a static wallpaper.
My main favorite of the update is auto-brightness actually works now, and has nice transitions when increasing/decreasing the brightness.
No native mounting of USB OTG storage yet though

Thanks! You were right on, now the transition is really smooth after I switched to static wallpaper. Hopefully they can fix the problem with live wallpapers down the line and hopefully it is not a GPU limitation.
4.0.4 fixed the Wi-Fi drop out problem with some routers.
This's a really big improvement.
My Bluetooth works now .on 4.0.2 yakju it didnt

GPU limitation I'd say, same GPU that's in the Nexus S.

Not the same GPU.
It has been beefed up considerably.
Nexus S GPU runs slower and is fed by single channel ram.

Same, but different.
Galaxy Nexus has an overclocked version.....also its being fed by dual-channel memory now. It's on average 100% faster in GL benchmark off-screen tests. Though dual-core CPU plays a bit of a role but GL benchmark is mainly GPU. So yea on average you can expect the Galaxy Nexus SGX540 to be about 100% faster than the Nexus S SGX540 or about double the GPU performance.
Of course, it still pales in comparison to SGX544mp2 and Mali-400
But I doubt it's GPU limitation holding back live wallpapers.....more like live-wallpapers not being optimized. I'd prefer to run a black background or something anyway to save battery....live wallpapers were fun for a little bit, but got boring fast.
You can check it out on anandtech
Edit: ^^ beat to post by 2 minutes haha
Is our gpu really that much slower than mali though? I thought i saw one particular benchmark between the two like 8 Mflops vs 5 Mflops...seems same ballpark to me. Just a lot more pixels to push in the HD screen
Over in the G note forum a thread exists claiming their mali gpu is too weak for their screen and that they experience stutters and lag. Makes me not feel so bad having our current gpu.

Haha, really?
One thing that I am happy about is that on the lockscreen when you go to camera it goes straight into the camera rather than going to the homescreen AND THEN going into the camera app.
Why is panorama square? Is it just happening on my end? Started with 4.0.2 it's been square not rectangular shape.

It's slower....around 50% slower than the Mali-400. But it's definitely not too weak.
There are a lot of things to account for.......the TI OMAP has HD coding capabilities which help it display things to the 1280x720 screen the Galaxy Nexus has much much easier and faster while being less "performance hungry" it's a pro of the TI OMAP that very few people take into account....Exynos can hold its ground though. In general though, the TI OMAP is a bit faster CPU wise than the Exynos, they trade blow really.
Nothing we use our phones for are really even taxing the GPU/CPU. Yea a few games here and there, but the Nexus can run them all fine. Android in general isn't really "Great" for playing games compared to iOS at leeast because of fragmentation etc...but it's great to use it for daily use and it does it's job.
Maybe when we start doing some crazy video/photo editing on smartphones.....CPU/GPU will play a much larger role. The biggest leap for android was probably single to dual-core and now, things aren't as big of a leap in general user experience performance.

He's talking about the stock 4.0.4 OTA.
I think most people are getting a little overexcited about the "smoothness".
In my experience, 4.0.4 is not really "WAY SMOOTHER". I personally can't tell the difference and I pay a lot of attention to stuff like smooth transitions, scrolling, delays, multitasking, ...
The battery life is definitely improved though. I get a lot more "screen" and a lot less "android os".
I filmed video on my Galaxy S3 (i747) in 1080p Superfine quality.
The default seems to be Variable frame rate, and with that
Minimum of 4 FPS
Maximum of 30 FPS
Average of 25 FPS
Anyone know if I can force the video frame rate at a constant 25(24) FPS or 30(29) FPS?
May it be an app or something more comprehensive.
The biggest problem I am facing is when there is a lot of motion involved, and I'm shooting at 4 FPS, the end result looks just terrible.
so, no suggestions on how I might achieve constant frame rates?

The only thing I can see is OC. Or better performance governor/scheduler. That being said, you'll need custom ROM/kernel to do those.

It doesn't really matter which one you use, you'll just have to find one that you like and allows OC (look at their features and such). Also, you'll have to decide whether you want to stay with TW or go for AOSP. If you don't know the difference, I suggest a little search/read
P.S.: You might be able to download TricksterMod from the Play Store and OC with it by just being rooted. Not 100% sure though as I don't use stock.
Good luck!
I don't understand how a phone so powerful can run so poorly. Often times it may take up to 5 seconds to respond to input and is extremely laggy. My friends iPhone 4 is more responsive and it is kind of embarrassing when I am always talking so highly of Android devices, and a 2 year device with incredibly inferior specs is outperforming a brand new high-end phone. There also seems to be an enormous lack of development. I am really starting to regret purchasing this phone.

I agree that G3 performance is bad. Its because the system in chip had to draw all the extra pixels of a QHD display. It causes lag and slowness everywhere.
The QHD display needs a more powerful system on chip.

Its got nothing to do with the QHD screen. The processor is more than capable of rendering QHD in 2D, even 4K wouldnt be a problem.
The problem is LG have very badly optimised the software. The latest revisions are much much faster, Im using v10J and everything is instant. We went through the same problems with the G2.

I've seen it happen on old phones of mine that tried to render 1080 but struggled. You get the stutter effect and frame rate dropping because it can't draw it quickly enough. This is a good comparison video too of the more powerful 805 chip Vs the 801 chip

Clearly thats not the case since I have absolutely zero lag. Its a fact that the GPU isnt stressed in 2D by the QHD, it doesnt even throttle past 330mhz. The 801 is rated for 4K, and only then limited by bandwidth rather than raw power.
Its all about the LG software. It will improve.
I have zero lag with my processor downclocked to 1.5ghz and 200 mhz GPU
So all this QHD resolution causing lag is complete BS and trolling.

This chip is not maxed out at all, let's not spread false information please. LG needs to optimize the software for the phone to run correctly. I have enabled 60fps on my phone, and the thing flies now. No lag while scrolling, or while gamingto speak of. The chip has no problems with the resolution.
The thing with Iphone is the way it's set up, Android has more things working in the background eating up ram/etc, that's why optimization is so important. Put an 801 chip into the Iphone, which has MUCH less things running in the background by default, and I guarantee you that the phone will run much faster than with the A7 chip.
Also, rogue apps that are not optimized correctly can also cause serious lag. I recently had the HTC One M8, which ran beautifully, until I downloaded a rogue app that was eating up ram when not in use, and my phone was lagging like crazy.
So it's not really fair to compare android with ios's speed, because all Iphone devices work the same way, and use the same chip. While on Android, there are many factors and apps that can interfere with the OS. Any true Android fan should know how these things work..you can customize the phone to your liking, but you also have to deal with rogue apps and ram issues sometimes.
Have to agree that the 801 struggles with 2k, use a 1080 801 flagship and you'll see the difference. The frame rate on some games is poor in the G3 compared to 1080 801 phones and that's nothing to do with software. The QHD is also power hungry and runs hotter and thermal throttles the CPU more.

Exactly, this chip is more then capable of running the high resolution on the G3. LG should have taken the time to calibrate the software to run better, but the newer updates going around are based off of the info here from XDA users. The default battery saving technique to dynamically adjust the fps/etc only saves a little more batter, but is not worth the tradeoff of a stuttering device. LG should have put in a bigger battery and increased the phone size a little instead of setting up the phone the way it currently is. People are too obsessed with thin phones now-a-days, I prefer a little bulk with MUCH better battery life!
---------- Post added at 07:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:43 PM ----------
Also, just to add on to the info that the 801 cannot handle the 2K resolution, which is false..I had the HTC One M8, which oddly stuttered like crazy when playing Asphalt 8, and a few other highly graphical games, but ran smooth as butter when scrolling through apps/etc. However, my G3 has Zero problems now running the same games. So clearly, it's more at play than just the 801. It's more about optimization/etc.
I have pretty much zero lag, the only stutter I see is when pulling down the notification bar, but that happens literally every time I do it. Anybody experiencing the same? Rooted 32gb D855 10g.

To give you an idea of the advances LG will likely make I recently flashed my G2 back to the original ROM. It was terrible, laggy, jittery, horrible camera lag. I then updated to the latest. Smooth, lag free, faster camera, totally reliable. This will happen for the G3 to.
QHD has nothing to do with the issues at all. Its quite clear LG released this phone in almost a panic about heat and battery life, with so many unnecessary measures taken. I disabled quite a lot of them and its smooth and the battery lasts longer than any phone ive had before, even my G2. I wonder if half the screens issues are due to LG undervolting it. Most mods for other devices undervolt the screen to save power, I want to try the opposite.

Oh yes, it's not compatible as of now. ART really does make a difference in how the phone works though. It's actually the first time that I have seen how beneficial ART is. Question, do you have any widgets in your notification shade/etc? You could also try using the Nova launcher and see if that helps.

When I was using the stock launcher, I thought that I would see some delay here and there, But I wasn't really sure if it was the phone or me believing what other people were writing.

Totally pointless, it wont save power or increase speed. If anything it will do the reverse, the GPU will only have to scale the 1080P image up to 1440P in order to fill the screen, which uses processor cycles.

I don't wish to change the resolution because I'm having good battery life with 1440p. I would to see the difference though of the standby time and screen on time of 1080p and 1440 and see if the difference is big. Using 1440p , I'm currently on 83 percent with 6 1/2 hours of standby and 1 hour and 9 minutes of screen on time.

I tried setting the 530 dpi and it actually works ... but all you can see pretty damn bad. From the pull-down notifications, with the enormous switch, with sliders for brightness and sound occupy three quarters of the screen, so many widgets lg, which work but are unusable.
It does not seem an optimal solution.

Guys I need help with my G4, situation with gaming is kinda unbelievable... I'm running android 6.0, and most games can't hit over 20fps mark, practically gaming it's more of frustration than fun
Examples:
Dragons rise of berk - 15-16 fps
Real Racing 3 - 20-21 fps
Jurasic World - 18-19fps
FF lagacy - 25-26fps
And things gets more interesting, I have also G2 that makes on average 30% better fps on the same games. Did an Antutu test, G4 is way better than the same G2, huge difference in 3d test.
Checked the net for the issue and found on this site folks that have it but hadn't have in with the Lollipop before that. Please give me some pointers for a future actions, is it wise to try go back to 5.1 or maybe wait for the next update? Or anything at all, I'm open to all ideas as long as they don't cost me my warranty (these LGs are not the most durable devices out there...).
Thanks!
I swear its d3vice to d3vice. I use ps1 and other emulators all the time ive never really watched the frame rates but never noticed lag. I got a gear vr ive been doin a bunch of games on it and it runs killer.
But im on lolipop heavly debloated bare core system.
Stock rom is riddled with throttling while gaming, I did notice games like hearthstone and minecraft getting unplayable after 20 minutes or so, fix is the way of going custom kernel and disabling stock thermal settings, soc on our phone doesn't heat up as much as 810 anyways (also 1440p much more demanding than 1080p take that in to consideration as well)
Of course i tested the heating issue, when the phone is cold is just a bit better, but the same thing basically. For example it would be 1fps difference cold-hot. Also interestingly on Antutu my device scores more than the same G4 with the same soft. Just watching the 3d garden part the phone G4 kills G2, many times smother, but when you try real game is the other way around.
In the other threads people that can't play also score normal on benchmarks.
My phone came with 6.0 stock, so can anyone made the upgrade from Lollipop share their experience? Also if anyone with MM can actually play some on the games I mentioned above as an example?

wich kernel you use on G2? i wish there was a dorimanx for G4..
3.10.84 and the soft is V20d-EUR-XX. I'm definitely not a gamer, but can't accept having a G4 that performs like a 80$ lenovo neither... Honestly I was thinking of switching to Samsung, but 20min of reading and I was left with the feeling that this action would just gain me changing one problem with another ones. At lest here I have only that FPS issue...and besides it I like the phone and would strongly prefer not to switch with another brand.
The most irritating thing is that the phone has no signs of hardware problems. On the Gamebench site there's plenty of test done with the stock 5.1 rom - https://www.gamebench.net/en/node/117
As you can see the same games do on average 30fps, witch is as it should be.

Is a hardware problem possible if the phone runs all benchmark and stress tests perfectly?

I've mentioned it a few times in previous posts, I think the gaming performance on this device is just simply horrendous.

Like i said i play ps1 and loads of games on mine. never notice any lag. I just modded my gear vr to work on my g4 and all the vr apps and games run surprisingly very well. Ive never been one to do benchmarks. Look and feel is more important than numbers to me. Ive seen phones get low benchmarks and game really well.
Im on lolipop by the way
Tested another thing, picked 2 games from the gamebench site that have been tested on g4... So Modern Combat 5 - 29fps Boom Beach - 58fps, both run super fluid. And the scores are exactly like in their test.
Having said that Real Racing continues to be a lot worse but they do 32fps on average. How is this possible? Look like the problem is concentrated on some games, not logical to me? How would it be possible every device to chose individually what games it likes??

Try Sim City BuildIt out on your phone and follow the tutorial right through to Dans City and see how that runs, its pretty poor on mine.
Will try it, even better its a strategy one. Btw, phonearena had complains about underperforming gpu on this phone. Was playing in 1080p trick possible without root?

Dont know about without root but that might be it. i forgot i had my resolution dropped to 1080 for a long time now.
Ive been runnin all my vr 3d intensives in 1080. And like i said ive never noticed lags.

When I play 3d scenes in Antutu they are 1080p, and G4 plays them a LOT smother than G2. So I guess that might solve the problem, 2k is absolutely unnecessary for gaming purposes on this small screen.
Also I'm not sure that the acctual intensity of the game is the main reason, thing looks more like game to game or optimizing issues.
