Hello All,
Just got my Incredible Rooted after some initial troubles. I removed CityID, Footprints, and Peep during the adb shell.
Now my GPS is constantly on when the phone is on. The Icon is always there in the notification bar.
Anybody have any idea why this is? or how to stop it? Its killin my battery. THANKS!
Got it!
Beautiful Widgets was causing the GPS usage. Went away the second I uninstalled it. I am reinstalling now and I doubt it will come back.
Sorry for wasting a thread. Hope this helps any other users.
Mine was doing that too. I dropped the Beautiful Live Wallpaper I was using and rebooted the phone, then the GPS stopped coming on and it seems to be fine now. I still have Beautiful Widgets installed, and never uninstalled it either.
mine seems to stay on. no widgets or anything.

Tell me if you still have the Google navigation icon.
I don't know if this would work, since I still have not rooted myself (just got back from LA and am setting up a proper dev environment for some real programming first... hopefully =p). But there are several widgets (one in sense, one in base Android I believe) that allow you to switch GPS/wifi/3G data/etc with a click of a button. The android-base widget is called "Power Control" and the HTC buttons can be selected by going to Widgets => Settings, then dragging and dropping which ones you want to use.
I hope the solution can be this easy (although it seems to rarely be, heh).
I'm seeing many users notice different little bugs with the phone (me included) and instead of having multiple threads about it, maybe we can all post it in one place where later the devs can see it and work on them once the phone is rooted etc.. Good idea/bad idea? I come from an Evo 4g with Sense rom so I wonder how many of these might not really be "bugs" but just a different user experience.
I'll start..
Accu weather app not updating location automatically
apk files downloaded from the computer and then transferred to phone are not showing up (unknown sources, usb debugging checked)
No function when touching the clock widget. It does not launch me to alarm, world clock, time etc menu. Maybe this is just a touchwiz thing as I mentioned above, I come from a sense rom.
So far those are the ones on top of my head. As I use the phone more, I'm sure I'll spot more (hope not!).
Anyone else?
Phone dialer issues
I have to reboot my phone from time to time to make a call.
It just says call ended when i try to call out.
When i reboot it works fine for a few hours.
Mentioned above plus the following so far (except reboot for calling issue):
No landscape mode using TW (auto-rotate enabled)
Red LED only available notification color (REALLY?!)
Skype video calling is upside down when using in portrait mode.
Also, phone call is automatically in Speaker mode when calling after making a Skype video call.
*Occasional phone FREEZES. As in, one minute it is okay, and the next minute, you have to do a battery pull. Happened twice since I got it on launch day.
*Browser closing for no reason. Happened 4 times since launch day.
*When plugged in with Samsung charger, phone's screen will act real glitchy
*SWYPE does not work properly, no matter the settings. Have to type normally.
That's all the software bugs I've experienced. Hardware-wise, there are reports of problems with data, 3G, 4G, and WIFI....I haven't seen any word on Bluetooth yet.

Actually, other's have experienced auto-closing apps and freezing. It's in a thread around here or at sprintusers.com, I forget which.
For the first three days I couldn't get data while roaming though the proper settings were checked. Sprint customer care reset my phone and after an hour of waiting it works.
All else its great (except for the above oddities with Touch Wiz) though I haven't checked GPS after encrypting the device.

Can you elaborate on this issue?
Also, anyone else having similar issues, please chime in.
Are you seeing a circle with a slash through it (no service) when this happens?
Can you receive calls when this happens?
Do you lose 4G or WiFi? Or is it just Voice/3G?
Does it seem to happen sometime after making a call/text (~30min), or any other pattern you've noticed?
Are you rooted?
If yes, what kernel (zedomax or tanimn/shabbypenguin - trying to narrow down an issue with one of the current root kernels)?
Exchange Appt. Notification Bug
I have had multiple reminders pop up for from my Exchange calendar and i can't seem to dismiss or snooze them from the notification bar. The snooze and dismiss buttons are available but are non responsive. The only way I can get rid of the notification is with the "Clear" button which is for all notifications. Has anyone else noticed this?

I know this may sound silly, and you may have already checked this, but check your language settings. I've read about some owners that were having problems with Swype discovered that their language was set to Spanish.
Also, on the LED notifications only being Red, I've been playing with an App called Light Flow. I've at least been able to change the notification colors to Blue using this App. Also, the App lets you use "White" as a color, which still shows a Red light, but blinks very fast if some of you prefer a faster blinking light.
I have had the roaming data issue as well. It does eventually work for me though, but on once occasion it took 10 minutes before data turned on after the roaming started. I will try calling Sprint as well.
Wifi signal is bad.. but speedtest says otherwise. I think the issue is with the amount of bars displayed and not the actual signal. I was standing 5 fee fromt he router and still didn't have full bars.
Ive been having problems today with dropping data connection. Toggling 4G off and on seems to restore it even in no 4G areas. I guess it resets the radio or something?

Just got this phone friday. So far the only bugs I am experiencing are roaming in places my evo got coverage and the security draw pattern having a mind of its own making it very hard to unlock the screen. Also the wifi reception is noticeably weaker than my evo

Ive done that already and it didnt help. Thanks, tho.
Luckily, no freezes or crashes here (knock on wood).
what i HAVE noticed is the rotate bug, for instance
when rotating the phone for texting or browsing, you have to kind of
bring it up to your chest @ about a 90 degree angle in order for it to rotate.
calibrated it all correctly & i still have to do that.
this is my first phone from the Epic/Galaxy company so im not sure if that was a problem in the original Epic 4g (non-touch) but it sure is kind of annoying :/
hopefully the dev's can tweak the gyro or SOMETHING.
Poor Wifi/3g Signal
Noticed lower bars on both wifi and 3g...when in same spot on my Evo 4g I had more...might be just how many bars its displaying and not the actual signal...but not for sure...actually went into roaming a few times when with my Evo 4g I never did (even with roaming was set to automatic...now I have it set to sprint only)
Hello. Has anyone tried updating through Kies? I tried and it says that this version of software cannot be updated. I just got my phone today. I did have problems installing the drivers. After I let it install say one or two drivers, one would error out. Once I unplugged it a few times and then plugged it back it, all of the drivers installed.
I hope this doesn't mean that Samsung is not going to upgrade to ICS or else I am taking this back. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and it won't allow updating with rooting. Thanks for any input and have a great day/night!

I noticed this too.
you have to check the check boxes next to the calender item. This is deceptive because the boxes have checks in them. But they should be green and not grey.
hope that helps
I've been having the same trouble as many have with the Epic 4G Touch's GPS. It takes forever, if ever, to get a GPS lock. I can have a GPS lock, go into McDonald's and come back out and it will be cold starting again. Ridiculous performance.
Rebooting the phone is a pain but seemed to be the only thing that worked every time. After reading a lot of different forums about this problem, I noticed a conservation that speculated that the problem wasn't specifically the GPS itself, but rather was location services. Apparently there are some more recent location services being flashed to phones and the GPS works great. It would make some sense that this is the problem because after a reboot I would think that the phone would reset location services when it turns back on. Further comments in those threads suggests that turning the phone to airplane mode and back also works around this problem.
I've been playing around with this for awhile today and it does appear that going to airplane mode and back helps the situation. I used Tasker to create a task that does this: turns on airplane mode, waits 20 seconds, turns off airplane mode, then launches GPS Test automatically. I created a widget icon for this task. I never attempt to get a GPS fix indoors. What I do is that when I walk outside on the way to the car I hit the widget. I let the phone do it's thing and by the time I get in the car and ready to go, I've had a GPS lock every time today. When I get in the car, I close GPS Test and start whatever app I want to navigate with.
So far, this method has yet to let me down. We will see how the weekend goes.
That's very interesting, I'm gonna try that and see if it helps. I also noticed that getting a lock by starting Navigation right away is almost impossible. It always helps me to Getty a lock with another app first. Telenave seems to work best for me.
This (among the countless others) workaround is fine and I thank you for it.
However I'd really like to know just what the hell is going on with the gps on these phones.
Some folks are fine with the gps working fine in any circumstances. While others have to wave dead chickens and performance some sort of incantation to get gps to be even reasonable. Still others have some issues but can work them out via flashing of modems and what not. Some had to replace their phone with another e4gt and it was fine there after. WTF?
The gps on my old GS2 i9100 was awesome. I never had to give it a second thought or worry about it losing gps lock or taking eons to get even a meager lock. This is entirely not the case with my current E4GT. Damn thing. If the update doesn't fix anything then I'm gonna replace it.
Is there just a batch of bad hardware out there? Is the gps sleeping when it shouldn't? Why does one fix seem to work for one phone but not another? Talk about manufacturer inconsistentancy, geez.
Does the sprint version of the galaxy nexus have these sorts of issues?
Heavy sigh.
Try GPS Status, it's available on the market. I just got a lock on 8/8 satellites within 5 seconds inside my apartment.
Google maps seems to take a little bit longer obtaining a GPS lock but after running GPS Status it seems much faster.
I believe that it does not require root, and the best part is that you do not have to flash back to GB, to get a lock so that you can flash ICS again.

Why flash back when this is easier?
There is no reason to have to flash back to GB, check out this article I found with a quick google search.

I'm blue in the face over this issue. Invariably, you get "I get a lock on 12 satellites from my concrete bunker 12 feet underground" responses (not helpful, BTW), yet I can't get a lock in the wide-open spaces. UNLESS, I reboot, start up GPS Test or GPS Tracker, or bounce back and forth from airplane mode, murder a chicken, or whatever.
It's totally hit or miss with this device. Yes, I can get a GOOD lock indoors, but only after I reboot, run GPS Test, and then go back inside. Not exactly convenient when you're hurtling down the freeway at 70mph.
It's frustrating to hear of the great experiences of other users when my experience has been so inconsistent. I rely on my GPS for directions, and for tracking my morning runs. It's a real pisser when it takes 4 minutes for the GPS to finally lock, which ruins any useful statistics for Runkeeper.
I know this is just a rant, but at least I feel better.
Try what I mentioned with GPS Status from the market. It might not be a permanent fix but it will help with getting a lock on your location.
1. Download GPS Status from the market.
2. Turn on GPS.
3. Open GPS Status.
4. Bring up the menu and select tools.
5. Manage A-GPS State.
6. Turn off GPS from the toggle in the status bar.
7. Select the option to Reset.
8. Select the option to Download GPS assistance.
9. Close the application.
10. Turn GPS back on and watch it lock on.

I agree, after all my research and attempts at fixing my phone; the only option left to me is replacement. I'm tired of reading forums about it (yet here I am) and it's whole thing is just silly.
I don't suppose you have any documentation on the serial number for the phone that had a ****ty GPS? It would be awesome if there could be some sort of documentation of which patch of phones is bad.
I finally moved back to Android and opted to go w/ the Note 4. While the hardware itself is brilliant, TW is still awful.
My actual problem is this: Every time I power on the screen, it begins "Finding Location" and the notification icon pops up in the tray and the notification bar. This literally happens EVERY time I power the screen back up. It doesn't seem to be affecting battery life, as I'm only using about 25% over a 12hr period (rather impressive, IMO)...but it certainly is annoying. Is this just a by-product of TW?
While I know I can turn off location, I do use a few things that make it optimal to have it on (nav, weather, etc.).
<tangent>
Having had the Note 10.1 for about 2 years, I really thought I could live with TW. I barely scrape things where I see it on the Note 10.1. However, I'm finding myself rather disappointed with just how ugly it is and how much crap they have messed around with in the Settings world. I'd honestly think HTC had Android prettier back in the original Evo days (Sense > TW...IMO). I'm really on the fence about keeping this handset, and may very well go back to my Lumia 928 for now until handsets with Lollipop drop. I actually like Windows Phone (what is wrong with me!?!) and would have gladly stayed there if they had the apps I want/need (Nest and Sonos).
</tangent>
It is my understanding that the reason for that is the S Health app. Do you still have it enabled?

Interesting. I'm not using it, but I never disabled it either. Let me give that a go!
I disabled S Health and put the location back to High, and now it never seems to lock in, even after a restart. This makes no sense, as Maps appears to be able to lock in on my exact location quite quickly.
ETA: OH SNAP. I'm such a dolt. Turns out it was a widget looking to pull GPS data for weather EVERY time the screen wakes. I feel like a true idiot.
Ah, I apologize for steering you in the wrong direction. I will make a note of it.

Anyone noticing the location GPS is funky? I typically turn my GPS off when not in use and I am finding that when using the PullDown toggle, the annoying Location Icon/Notification gets stuck on, and other times won't come on after its been off.
The only way to fix it is to turn it off and reboot, or turn it on and reboot. But after it gets toggles, it gets screwy again.
I haven't done much testing yet to see if it is just the icon or actually the GPS failing to toggle. Also I am wondering if going through settings to toggle is a work around.
I am out of town for work but wanted to quickly throw it out there to see if anyone others experience this weird behavior. I don't have time this week to really sit down and play with it, so a quick fix (if available) is known.
+1 on this. Just noticed the other day when I had to navigate to a party. I arrived and turned off location and it was still stuck in notification tray. Think it went away eventually, but I didn't have time to reboot so not sure what happened. Will keep an eye on it next time though.
Also, noticed the phone has trouble switching from 1x back to 4g. Has to use airplane mode to cycle the radio.
Yea I noticed that too. Again I am traveling and normally have GPS off and only turn it on when I actually launch Google Maps.
I was listening to Pandora mostly with no issues on my 8hr drive but twice, I think, I had to toggle airplane mode to get back data.
The Location notification is ridiculous. I mean its stupidly annoying already but now its getting stuck.

You really only notice it if you turn off Location, the little PIN notification gets stuck and doesn't go away on the status bar and notification that says Location on or something.
Pretty annoying.
Also my wifi just randomly stops working. I have to disconnect, reconnect and it starts again. Different topic though.

Ah ok, I hadn't had that problem. As of last night I downgraded and then rooted and removed bloatware. So doubt I'll see them problems. Though I am facing a few minor ones mainly with the all apps dual window mod. But like you said that's a different topic. Main reasons I downgraded was of course because I like full control over something I own. But wanted the 60fps video recording which I'm pretty sure we can all agree should have been included with the G4. I also finally found a nice work around for enabling silent mode with the actual volume button since the xposed module with true silent didn't work for the G4. Sorry I'm getting off topic here. But hope you find a fix.
Yea I was good with lollipop. Marshmallow hasn't included anything except bugs. I resisted the upgrade for a while but I was not rooted and the System Update popping up constantly was drivingme crazy.
A6 fixed a few annoying bugs for me but brought others.
The location notification getting stuck can happen even with location on, I never turn mine off.
Biggest problem for me WiFi disconnecting at 15%, and needing a reboot to reconnect.
Yea the location notification does get stuck regardless if turned off or not.
I ended up getting rid of the G4 because of the problems. (Qi Charging, wifi disconnects, etc).
