I have a 32GB version of the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet that has failed at the Google screen. I have read enough forums to know the only way to fix this is to replace the main board. Does anyone know if I can replace the board from the 32GB version with a 16GB version? These seem much more available.

Good to know. The 16GB board is $35 and the 32GB is $85. Just ordered a replacement for mine on Amazon. I got around to updating to 5.1 just late last week and this morning woke up to the Google screen.
As i sit staring at my equally dead 32GB, the only thing keeping me from ordering a replacement, is... . will it happen again? lets face it, most replacement boards are pulled from broken/used tablets, and if this is something that happens after a time, it will just happen again. Personally, i am not too keep on buying replacement after replacement for an aging tablet. Now, if somebody comes up with a good WHY it happened, and what can prevent it, ill be interested again..

Seems to be a random glitch. Some attributed it to the brand or batch of eMMCs used on the motherboard, though it's more an educated guess than solid proof . From my perspective, using a custom rom somehow eludes the problem completely. And I've tried at least 4 or 5. Apparently, the OTA modifies the partitions in such a way that makes it potentially susceptible to such failure. So if you insist on official roms only, you're assuming that risk.

I have a G2 with Salsa on it. Been working great for a month or so.
Last night I was using it, put it back in my pocket about an hour later I took it back out to use it and the screen backlight would come on, but there was no image there. I could hear feel the phone respond with by vibrating and what not. I even called it from another phone and the phone rang, and I could swipe to answer the call but the screen itself would not display an image except the backlight was on...
Any idea where to begin? Just get another phone or what???

I had this problem. It sucks. Basically the screen when out on you. I had to get a handset exchange through T-Mobile. Good thing is they ended up sending me out a brand new model for some reason. In the meantime, I went to Best Buy and bought a Nexus S and returned it when the G2 arrived lol. Also, you can have T-mobile rush shipping but its an extra $20.
Dang that's what I was afraid someone would say... I don't have insurance on this phone! I will call t-mobile and see what they will do for me.
Mean time, guess it's off to find a BestBuy with T-Mobile.
This happened to me, too. I did a warranty swap, which doesn't require you to have T-Mobile's insurance. G2s are still new enough that the warranty should cover you with no problem.
The warranty swap was less fun. The first one they sent me had a broken microsd slot and I had to return it, too. The second one they sent works fine, but has a much looser hinge than mine had. But other people have been getting brand new ones, so you might luck out.
I guess being with t-mobile for 6 years is paying off. They called a store .5 miles up the road for me and had them start the exchange process. I just have to stop by and grab the phone. No hassle or waiting.
Thanks for the help though and letting me know I wasn't the only one. I was worried I bricked it some how. Looks like it's time to try another ROM. But I really like Salsa so I may stick to it.
I have burn in on my S3, it is from a golf GPS app that I use frequently. I used it for about 6 months with no problems, then all of a sudden after 1 round of golf a couple of weeks ago the outlines of the app are intensely burned into my screen. I am not sure I understand why all of the sudden it became an issue, as I did not change any settings prior to the round and used it how I always used it before.
At any rate, I'm still within the year of when I purchased it from AT&T. I called AT&T and they told me my options, please let me know what you think:
1. try to get Samsung to replace (do they cover burn in?)
2. AT&T warranty center will replace with a refurbished (most reasonable option, but I've had really bad experiences with AT&T always replacing the phone with a *more* broken unit than the one it was replacing...so am scared of this)
3. AT&T says I am eligible for an upgrade, so I could get a free S3 from them or get a new S4 and pay upgrade price
4. combination of 2 & 3, get a refurbished to replace my burned in S3, sell on ebay and then upgrade to the S4--maybe someone else will have better luck with a refurb'd item, as they never work for me
What do you guys think?

4 sounds like a good solution. Although, the S4 is like the S3s, pretty much the same phone, with some small upgrades.
You can also try your luck with a refurb and keep your upgrade for something better. Summer is coming = device release.
Got a replacement yesterday. So far, so good. It even seems to work with GPS better than my previous one. Hopefully it lasts!
So had the phone only a few days as a replacement from Att. Tonight it locked up and would not respond to anything and I had to reseat the battery to get it to respond. Think this is a bad sign and should I take it back or give it the full 30 day warranty??

On stock? Or you played with it a bit (ROM and such)?

I had a Galaxy 4G that used to do that all the time, the only fix was to reboot it before charging (every couple days). Depending on how much you are willing to pay I think I would go with the S4 option since you are probably only going to get refurbished phones as replacements.

The replacement phone is stock...I haven't done anything to it.

Is there any phone better than the S4 anticipated to come out in the next 9 months or so? Removing the battery every now and then isn't a huge deal, though when I buttoned everything back up and put the case back on, it caused the corners of my Zagg to stretch out a little which is really annoying. I wonder if doing this repeatedly could cause the Zagg to get worse.

I just get a e-980.
With no special reason, the screen stop working, I realized under the sunlight, that my LCD still working, but I have no more backlight.
I can barely see white color shapes.
Is it a ''normal'' issue with those phones?
- I've opened it, clean contacts from ribbon cables. - didn't work
- I've done a complete stock reflash with LgFlashTool - didn't work
If you guys have no clue, I'm scared that I'm dealing with a brick, and get back my old reliable desireZ

Guess first thing to do in such a situation is to check if there is some obvious glitch- maybe brightness turned down to zero, phone not waking up die to some mod etc.. If does not work, then next is factory reset.. Next is a tot flash and then visit to the service center

yep. All done.
Like I said, I can receive calls/txt. I ear the unlock sound, etc. I can see LCD ON under bright sunlight.
Right now, I'm just thinking to throw it in the garbage, a 250$us phone that worked 2 days !!! Wow, people told me to never touch LG, I start to believe them.
Maybe some body here can sell me a functional LCD with broken digitizer??, mine is brand new.
I just dont want to dump more money in it, since the HTC is working strong, even for a 4 yo device

I bought my LG OPTIMUS G PRO a few days back refurbished, it worked flawlessly for around a week. A few days ago its screen went blank even though it was possible to use screen blank like answering calls etc, i thought humidity has affected it and buried it in rice for one day and it worked again but after 2 days it again went blank and this time burying it didn't help. I am without luck now and looking for some workaround. Please someone help us if anyone knows how to fix it?

If you don't have a warranty, I'd open it up then clean and reseat the screen dongle connector.

yeah, but how you'll be sure that problem wont came back in a year?
The last time I heard about backlight stop working/burn, it was on compaq laptop with pentiumII processor.
1 1/2 year old phone, that's not normal.
any way, I put the phone in a bag of rice for the night, powered up, and the back light came on for 3 seconds.
-- 5 days and still have NO supports from LG.
This is just a thought. I had something similar happen in one of two ways, either the screen turning all red or dark. It was an issue with a night reading program, Twilight. After I managed to turn that off the problem went away.
If you have programs like Lux or Twilight running or anything that can control the screen try and turn them off.
Update.
I didn't touch the phone for days, leaving the battery out. Then I put it back just to be ready to retry a clean flash.
Screen all black.
I had something to do, I leave it on my desk for few hours, and when I came back to play with it, the screen light up. It's been a day , no issue, but some times the screen flicker.
It will probably let me down soon.
Strange issue : the home button led light doesn't work anymore.
Is it because I flashed the telcel stock rom on the e980 at&t?

IF you buy a LG product, do not expect customer support. My e980 had a failed battery at 10months, LG basically told me to go screw my self. (Wanted me to pay to ship the phone, which would cost more then a new battery, and why do they need the phone when the battery is faulty, i gave up, bought myself a new battery, and have been good since. ) other then that, i like their hardware, ive had a G2X and now the G pro.

I see a lot of people try to blame manufacturer for the issues of their phone. LG, HTC, Samsung, Apple.
Remember, they all offer one year warranty. So if your phone is still under warranty, go RMA. I already got two HTC and one Samsung exchanged.
If your phone is not under warranty, did you buy it used ? Then you should blame the previous owner or yourself. Why did this happen to your phone ONLY while ten's of thousands of users here are fine?Did you do something that may cause the issue?
This is not personal. I just try to say something fair when I see people said "Never touch LG/Samsung/HTC.."
It won't help your phone come back. And it did mislead other users

It doesn't sound like they told you to "go screw yourself" exactly. It actually makes quite a bit of sense that a manufacturer would want all of a faulty device to arrive rather than that their customer just send them the parts they assessed as faulty. If they had to send you a new device, they would probably want the old one intact.

I called LG to exchange my Nexus 4 earlier this year. I call only once and they give me a shipping address( HTC also give address when I called ), asking to ship within 10 days or so .
They did NOT ask the carrier of my Nexus 4.( T-Mobile if you want to know ). They just check Imei and verified that the phone was under warranty.
I did not send the phone back to LG in the end. Someone bought it from me. The Nexus 4 has light yellow tint on display but hardly noticeable. The buyer don't care..
My point is, OP, I guess you did not told us that your phone might not be under warranty

Asking you to shipping back to factory is Exactly what is called customer service.
All manufacturers do so!
They need to run full software and hardware check on your device, making sure that all parts are working when they return the phone to you.
You might care a few bucks shipping cost . But truth is that maybe battery was not just the faulty part. Something else MIGHT go wrong as well. They need to find out once you call in for RMA.
It is YOU don't know what customer service is, Not them.
Once upon a time,about 8 months ago,there was the little newbie me,I that old E975(lgg) and decided he should get a new phone with all those "G4's" "S6's" etc,I wanted a phone with killer specs,and the best camera out there,so I decided to go with the g4,looked up prices online on his country. Pretty damn high,so i found that one shop that sold it for like 100$ less,no official warranty,unofficial warranty for 1 year,that seems fair,I bought it,the biggest mistake i ever made, the phone was so good,it worked like a charm,and god damn that camera was awesome,about 4 months ago i was sending a whatsapp when it just got stuck on that screen,m'kay i tried restarting,won't work,removed the battery and inserted an other one,boot to lg logo and then shut down,alright, i still got warranty. time to use it,went to the store,they said "we can't fix it",worst customer support EVER,ever since that I've been using that ****ty replacement phone,ewo,so today i was really bored and decided to look up the problem and noticed my s/n begins with "505" looked it up,apparently all the g4's with that s/n got stuck eventually,and the store knows that and since my warranty is unofficial I can't do ****,or can I? is there any way to get out of this with a functioning phone?help?

Mine died yesterday. It's a hardware fault apparently and can't be fixed. You can, however, disable big cores and recover your data, but your phone will be really slow.

Phone doesn't work really slow, if you know what to do. My phone is working since I disabled the big cores what is about 2 weeks now, I'm even on a custom ROM. All you need to do is to root it and using 'Device Control Manager' (Kernel Adiutor doesn't work for me) change the frequency what will enable all 4 cores and with 4 there is no big difference in the performance really. I feel like it's more Qualcomms fail than LG's, cuz look G4 was first phone with Snapdragon 808 wasn't it? What if the first processors they made they sent to LG as they are all now in s/n's 505-509 and what if these are faulty? It actually would make sense, with 6 cores my phone didn't even turn on, with 4 it works as normal, it means there is 'something' wrong with the two faster cores..
It's LG's fault. They have admitted such. It's a faulty connection/motherboard.

i've baked the phone,it works for now,how can i make sure that it'll keep working?

I'm sorry, but unfortunately you dug your own grave with that one. You may have saved yourself $100, but caused yourself major issues in the long run sacrificing that warranty.
Honestly, there is apparently no way to ensure it'll keep working. A lot of users have reported their phone dying again after LG has fixed it. A motherboard replacement is the second best option with the first being a phone other than the G4.
Now first, here's that question:
Do all Note 7 considered "unsafe" by Samsung have a 0,01 chance to explode? Or are only 0,01% of these considered unsafe phones have a faulty battery thay may explode, thus making the rest "safe to use"?
The main thing you can learn by searching google and reading countless website about the Note 7 faulty battery is the following: 0,01 % of Note 7 are affected with a faulty battery. There's a "batch" with faulty batteries, etc...
But they never clearly tell you if this makes 9999% of other Note 7 safe..
The Samsung official warning and countless websites keep telling us to exchange our phones with "safe ones". But what if my phone is already safe?
Why should I exchange my perfectly working phone with another which I don't even know if it will work properly...
From my understanding ALL of the Notes with SDI battery could have this problem. 0.01% is the rate of the phones with simptoms manifested...

yes,I think that is the real problem, the batteries may start failing in unpredictable ways at undetermined times, remember the first problems about reboot and bootloops that ended in bricking? I think they were batt related, so a perfectly functioning device now, may or may not fail at any time, I got mine on 29th Aug, and works really fine to this very moment, but, who knows? might fail in two minutes! I will exchange it on 30th Sept, when my carrier is starting the procedure

From the number of reported incidents (of which 1/3 turned out to be bogus), it is likely that .01% of the 2.5M battery packs running around in the wild are defective. But which ones? So when you can't answer that question the only thing to do is haul them all back in. Based on the cost and black eye this caused Samsung you can be pretty sure if there was any way to identify the .01% they would have done it. I would have kept my original phone for months until I nicked or scratched it before exchanging it. The stupid "turn your phone off" nag screen they forced out via OTA is the only reason I got a replacement now.
If you go by the raw numbers of how many phones have actually had a problem, the percentage is far less than .01%. I think what Samsung means is that there are .01% of N7's that could possibly be from a batch that could possibly have a future battery issue. The issue as they explained was a batch without proper plastic/tape between the lithium cores of the battery making them more likely to eventually get hot while charging and touch thereby causing them to hot-vent (not really "explode", but whatever you want to call it they get very hot and if you are holding the phone or it is near you it won't be good). In any case, I bet Samsung knows the IMEI's of the phones that could be effected, but to be safe and avoid litigation risk they are recalling ALL of the phones.
I have my new N7, have yet to set it up and migrate over from my original N7. I don't think my original N7 has an issue honestly, but I am following protocol. The odd thing is that VZ had originally shipped my N7 (I pre-ordered) since I do not have a VZ corp store in my town and the closest one is an hour away. They have not given me ANY instructions, box, shipping lablel - NOTHING about sending my original N7 back. I have to wonder if they are even going to ask for it back. ?? Seems odd - you'd think they would want the recalled phones back and out of the hands of consumers. I am very tempted to set up my new N7 for my GF and continue to use my original N7 but won't simply because I have a feeing that the original N7's will at some point be IMEI blocked from being used in the future. She has a S4 and is using it on Straighttalk and that thing is slow as molasses. I think there is something wrong with her S4 honestly, but would love to get her an N7. I wonder if down the line someone will be making a replacement battery for the N7 that one could buy off of Amazon? Just thinking ahead if VZ or Samsung does not actually ask for my original N7 back.
