[Q] Can I browse my phone using my Windows PC? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Let me precede this by saying, yes, I've plugged my phone into the USB port of my Windows 7 computer and yes I can see SAMSUNG-SM-N910V under Portal Devices on my computer, and it shows Portable Media Player right under it. I double click onto it, and I can Read/Write to the contents of the Phone and Card folders.
Using the app ES File Explorer on my phone, I see I basically have 3 root folders on my phone. Two of them are basically the same as Phone and Card, as mentioned above. The third one, is simply called "/". Is there a way to see this folder on my PC, or do I need root access on my phone to do so?

Howto? map/mount SD IN XDA to drive on PC to download mp3?

What I'm trying to do:
Place XDA in cradle, let sync run. Place audio CD in the desktop PC. Use Windows media player and select "Copy from CD". I would like to have the default copy location set to "MDAIII/Storage Card/" but I can not figure out how to do this. With this set up I could dock MDAIII, insert music CD, press 'copy' on WMP and then all the files would just end up on the SD card of the MDAIII. I wouldn't need to do file transfers or anything else. Again I'm trying to do this for my wife so it is as simple as dock-insert CD-press button-done!
I am using Windows Media Player and I would like to make the default "save to" location the SD card in my XDA/MDAIII. I have tried setting up files syncing but it doesn't have the SD card listed, only "My Docs" are sync'd. I tried to create a short cut on the XDA in the 'My Documents' folder but it doesn't sync the short cut to my desk top.
Anyone know how to map/mount the XDA as a USB drive and then have something on the PC like N:/MDAIII/Storage Card/ that could be browsed to?
Thanks,
Paul.
Havent tried this myself but:
Once the device is connected via Activesync, you can explore (via Activesync) to is. Cant you create a drive mapping from there (via menu Extra I guess) just like you can do with network drives?
Also, the device is accesible via the 'normal' windows explorer. I think you can navigate there as well
Yes I can explore there and it does show up when using File Explorer. In Explorer I see my C, D, E, Control Panel and Mobile Device. I can double click down into it with no problem. But when I open Windows Media Player and select Tools/Options/Copy Music/change (copy music to this location), it only lists C, D and E drives, no Mobile device.
I then, in File Explorer, tried to map network drive but it would not allow me to browse to My Computer, only My Network. I was going to type in the path but I'm not sure what the path would be???
C:/???????/Mobile~?
Any ideas?

Click to collapse
In WINMedPlayer you choose "copy to CD or Device" on the left, and on the upper right their is a dropdown to specify CD Burner or Mobile Device.
iggy,
Maybe my brain isn't working today: With your suggestion I can now see the MDAIII storage card as a Copy to location but I can not see my CDROM drive as an input. I would like to copy directly from the CD to the XDA and skip the PC save step. Is it only possible to copy to the desktop and then do a second step to download the info to the XDA?
Thanks,
Paul.

Edit files on phone from PC

Is there any way to edit files that live on the phone directly from the PC without having to first copy them over from the phone to the PC?
For example, I have some Office documents that I access somewhat frequently that I store on the phone. I'd love to be able to open these from my PC without having to first copy them over from the phone to the PC and then back again.
Is there any way to achieve this?
Currently double clicking the files brings up only a properties box and there's not "open" option when you right-click on them.
Thanks for the info!

[Q] All files not showing on PC

I have tried with file manager and found the files i was looking for in android/data/something but when i connect my GN to my PC (win7 32bit) i only get a few folders and files,
I have tested with both USB modes and I only get the basic folders such as
Alarms, Android, DCIM, Downloads, Movies, Music, Notifications, Pictures, Podcasts, Ringtones.
and the file manager reports more folders present :/
also the files i'm trying to access are within the android folder (which is visible on PC) but in filemanager there are 10-20 folders found in android/data that are missing on PC. PC only shows 3 folders in android/data
It also appears to be possible for other users to access the exact same file at the exact same filepath, why can't I?
is there a feature on GN or ICS that makes it impossible to access some files from the PC or is this a bug/flaw?
in case you guys need to know what files i'm trying to access, it's the game files to GTAIII
I kind of have a similar problem.
When i connect my phone to a windows 7 computer it mounts okey and shows me the files. If I create a folder on the phone from windows explorer, unmounts the device, I can not see this folder on the phone via a file manager unless i reboot my phone. This also applies the other way around. If I create a folder on the phone from a file manager, then mount the phone to the computer, I can not see the folder until I reboot my phone.
Is there a fix for this? Is it a bug? How can i resolve this? It's very frustrating.
MTP/PTP doesn't offer all the features the full USB transfer mode has. Search will help you find the pros and cons of this.
Workaround: Use an app like WiFi File Explorer or Airdroid.

Copying in File Transfer MTP mode

I am unlocked and rooted on my new OP3. I installed the oneplus drivers and have Vista on my laptop. I have USB debugging on and switched to File Transfer MTP mode after plugging in the phone cable.
I can view files on the phone in internal memory, delete files on the phone, and copy files from the phone to the PC using a windows explorer dual pane alternative, like xplorer2. But I cannot copy a file from the PC to the phone. The phone appears as a portable media player with the internal storage labeled as 'generic hierarchical'. I wonder if this has something to do with it. Maybe these dual pane explorers need to see the phone as NTFS format for this to work. Does anyone know: Is the phone supposed to appear as a portable media player in Windows? Or do I have a problem with having the wrong drivers?
The reason why it seems like the drivers are okay is that using the standard windows explorer, I can copy a file from the PC to the phone--just not with an explorer alternative.
I'm in such a habit of using a dual pane explorer, I'd like to try to fix this if possible. Has anyone else been able to copy files to the Oneplus 3 using a dual pane explorer? Does your phone appear as something other than a portable media player? Or do I need to resign myself to use the standard windows explorer?
I finally fixed it. Seems to be my network adapters were using google dns servers. So this fixed my issue: http://ecross.mvps.org/howto/enable-netbios-over-tcp-ip-with-windows.htm.

How to transfer files from Phone to PC with Dex?

Ok so in the description of dex website it talks about easily dragging and drooping files between the pc and phone. But i can only seem to drag files from PC to phone and not the other way around. How do you transfer files from the phone to the PC?
I have the same question ...
windows shared folder using es explorer or total commander with plugin
Sent from my SM-N975F using Tapatalk
Yeah I'm also curious as to how to get this to work on my MacBook.
[Pasting text from Samsung DeX to a PC]
1. Using a mouse, click and hold then drag to select the text that you'd like to copy from the Samsung DeX screen on a PC. Then, press the keyboard shortcut for copy or right-click the text and select Copy.
2. Place the mouse cursor in the area on the PC where you want to paste the copied text. Then, press the keyboard shortcut for paste or right-click the area and select Paste.
[Transferring files saved on your smartphone to a PC]
1. Open the My Files or Gallery app on the Samsung DeX screen of your PC, then select the files that you want to transfer.
Click and hold files with your mouse to select them. Then, click and hold them one more time and you will be able to drag the files to a different directory. (If you update the My Files or Gallery app to the latest version, you can select and move files just like you would on a PC.)
2. Drop the selected files on the desktop of your PC or its File Explorer.
※ If you drag and drop an image on a Microsoft Office document, you can insert the image into that document.
.
You can copy from most Dex folders i tried from Dex to PC . Open files tick file or folder then click and hold down on the same file or folder until it shows as floating from the original position then drag it out of the DEX Window and place it in your PC folder Done.
Neither of the solutions above worked for me. I thought the bottom solution was working but it only put a temp file in my Pc. then when i tried again it said the file already existed. I cancelled out and now my pictures are gone.
Use a usb cable and transfer directly.
Keep it simple.
Always copy, then verify, then delete; not cut and paste if files are important.
Best to use a SD microcard as a data drive in the 10+ as well as backing up those files on a PC.
If not in the trash bin those files are most likely lost.
Easiest way I found is open PC and phone in Dex...then open file explorer on PC... In file explorer you should find your phone...should be under This PC /phone mine says This PC / S20 when I open the S20 it is just like using explorer on any drive. I cut and paste the files I need from there.
Okay after being totally frustrated, IT DOES WORK!!! You can't copy files to all locations on you windows PC like network drives but it definitely works dragging to desktop and root level hard drives, I did C: and E:, both direct attached to PC. I also did USB connected external hard drives at the root level.
Also, aholic_2, you've ALWAYS been able to transfer files the way you mentioned, for 10 years or more, you don't need DeX to do that either.
Cheers
