Car charger for nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Accessories

I'm looking for an inexpensive car charger for the nexus 5.
Are any of these OK for using with the nexus 5?
http://m.ebay.com/itm/171488003244?nav=SEARCH
http://m.ebay.com/itm/111315640272?nav=SEARCH
Any other suggestions?

It's not the car charger that's the issue - it's the $%&# micro USB cable. My OEM cable manages to charge my phone while it's running Waze during my commute - but so far no other cable I get can match that. I even got some 24/28 cables hoping it was a current carrying capacity thing - no dice. But I haven't given up yet - currently in the process of modding a cheap cable to see what the magic sauce is.

I didn't know that.
So, are you saying I can buy the cheapest 2 A car charger around and using the cable that came with the nexus it will charge nicely?
What specs I should look for in the car charger.

Go for a 2A that shorts the D+ & D- pins together
You need two things,
(1) the charger actually puts out the Amps that it says it does (go for a 2A charger)
(2) the D+ & D- pins on the charger are shorted together - this tells the phone it's connected to a wall charger and should pull max current
I've actually successfully managed to take one of the cheap micro-usb cables that I bought and convert it to a high current charging cable - I'll be posting the how-to soon.

Cheap accessories I recommend

So after getting my Evo I devided I needed 3 items. A usb cable for my computer, a car charger that could also double as a usb cable for my computer, and an hdmi cable to take advantage of all of this badass phones features. Well I shopped around at a bunch of the usual sites like amazon and ebay but I ended up at dealexteme.com.
Here is what I ordered: (and the SKU so you can too)
- SKU: 26313 - Retractable USB to Micro 5P Data/Charging Cable (60CM-Length) - $3.14
- SKU: 35687 - Car Cigarette Powered USB Adapter/Charger with Retractable USB to Micro USB Cable (Black) - $5.33
- SKU: 37396 - Gold Plated HDMI V1.4 Male to Micro HDMI Male Shielded Connection Cable (1M-Length) - $12.20
So far I have only received the USB cable and the car charger. They are the exact same cord but the car kit has the cigarette lighter plug. I am very happy with both items and I am just waiting on my hdmi cable which should be here any day. Anyways I just wanted to let you guys know that ya it comes from across the Pacific so it takes longer than most other places but for the price I dont think you can beat it.
Do they charge the phone quickly? especially curious about the car charger... does the phone see it as USB? If you're unsure, the easiest way I've found to check is to install "Battery Indicator" and see if it reads "AC" or "USB" in the notification drawer when charging. Seems to make a huge difference in charging times.

I'd imagine it would be the same at plugging it into a wall in your house. the charger changes the dc voltage from the cigarette lighter into 115 vac.

I've got one of those mini cigarette usb charger rated ay 700ma at ebay. I think usb cable with the car charger can do about 500ma and wall outlet can do about 1000ma. Correct if I wrong.

usb will give you 500ma, the htc wall wart you get is rated at 1a aka 1000ma.
the other i dont know.

It's actually the other way around. Though we use AC as our main power source most (not all) use DC power. It's a lot easier to change AC to DC and AC has the ability to transform to lower or higher voltages relatively easily and efficiently.
Most electronics run off of 12V or less.

Rectify! I mean . . . testify!
I really wanted to have a quick car charger, seems useless to me to have a slow charger in your car, would be fine having a slow charger in my house though. the car charger from the palm pre is a 1000 mAh charger, used it and it actually seems to charge faster than the htc home charger. $20 shipped from amazon.com
I got the same USB cable & car charger & an extra wall charger in a kit for <$4 shipped.

Fast car and home chargers (full 1 amp)?

So I bought a car usb charger that claimed it was rated at 1 amp. Using both my blackberry and HTC oem usb cables it will only show up as a USB charger (500ma).
This is not exactly enough to charge the phone while using 3g, gps, full screen brightness, etc. I'm looking for a good confirmed 1 amp hardwire (not using a usb cable) car charger and home charger. I used my sisters Samsung charger (rated at 700ma) and it charged it quicker than with the OEM htc charger.
And I would like to try and get ones that are confirmed to show up as fully charging the phone. I would appreciate some insight

I would like to be able to use my Amazon prime for a change, so amazon links would be nice

I went through a few different car chargers, so I can help you out here. I bought the Belkin car charger recommended here in another thread, low profile and rated at 1A, but my phone only recognized it as USB and charging was fairly slow, extended road trips using video recording and navigation while plugged in would drain my battery over time.
I used my friend's palm pre home charger and it worked very well, so I went on to Amazon and bought the "palm vehicle charger". The one I got in the mail (from Park Deals) was DOA, wouldn't turn on at all (I emailed Park Deals and they sent me a new replacement free of charge, didn't even have me ship back the defective one). I called the local radio shacks and found one in stock at $9.99 (radio shack isn't carrying palm anymore, so the accessories are on closeout but hard to find in stock). Works like a charm, the phone recognizes as AC charging, the phone still charges while running navi or recording video.
My friend got a cheapo car kit on ebay, came with rubberized case, mount that fits the evo with the same case on, and a cheap unlabeled car charger with a bungie type cord. I tried this on my phone, my evo recognizes it as AC also, so I assume it would charge well if it's rated at 1A. I've seen several other cheapo car chargers rated at 1A as well.
Another thread here on XDA says that if you modify your charger/cable by altering the middle data pins you can get the phone to believe the usb port is plugged into the wall and draw full current from the charger. I tried covering the two middle pins with a piece of paper and plugging it in, but this didn't work for me. The other methods involved shorting the two data pins together, I didn't really want to waste a cable or mess up a charger and potentially my phone so I just bought a different charger. Another thread mentioned buying a specific rocketfish usb cable had a similar effect.

That was me on both accounts. Love my rocket fish cable. Bought the 12v/usb converter for the car and whether or not i use the pc or car to charge, it shows as ac charger on the phone. I use this cable on all my pc's as well as the usb outlet in my vehicle.
This is the charger that I bought from amazon. It shows up as charging from AC (instead of USB) charging. It's available for Amazon Prime for under $6:

How fast does it charge?
One the 2.1 amp port, the Evo only charges at 1 amp. The Evo doesn't charge any faster with this charger than any other 1 amp charger.

Gotcha, thanks for the info.
I just ordered a Rocketfish cable. We'll see how that works.
Would be nice if they made a Y-cable to get 1amp from 2 USB ports in a PC. I mean, I know they MAKE cables like this but I read somewhere that HTC phones were designed to still only charge at 500mAh even with one of those.
Dunno.
It depends on what you're using as a charging source. When usb charging on my home pc or car, it's AC charging at 1 amp.. But if I'm charging with my Energizer external battery, it's only USB charging at 0.5 amp. This is using the same usb cable.
iGo
Would anyone happen to know what an iGo tip (A97) delivers? I am trying to rig up a custom solution that is hard-wired, but uses iGo tips so I don't have to use the cigarette lighter plug and I have the flexibility at the corner of my windshield to swap tips for different devices.
Right now, I have a 4-port USB hub installed under the dash that is 12v powered. I then use a proprietary iGo cable that uses a standard PC style USB connector on one end and then terminates into an iGo tip connector at the other end. That USB cable runs up to the corner of the windshield so I can swap tips at will.
If I use the iGo A97 tip on their cigarette lighter adapter, it seems to charge, but I am not sure at what rate. If I try to use the A97 tip on the USB hub, it charges for about 2 seconds, and then the light goes out. The Evo does not seem to like the custom arrangement, yet all my other micro usb devices do not seem to have any issues and charge just fine...
Thanks,
-Rob
I can attest to the Moto 513 working fine - it has served me very well on my Evo and the Treo Pro before it.
Unfortunately it is a big ass charger though - wish there was a good micro option.
How do u determine how much power its actually charging at or if its not using the full 1amp rating?

Griffin USB car charger for tablets

I just picked one up at walmart for $16. Its rated at 5v 2.1 amps. So it should work, but it still shows a red x on the tab when charging. I'm probably gonna take it back. Does anybody know of a car charger that plays nice with our Tabs?

Sounds like it is not seeing some sort of required voltage or signal on one of it's pins to tell it to charge at full power. Or maybe it is charging at full power but because of this required voltage or signal the TAB doesn't show it. Someone on the Asus Transformer forum really delved into the Asus connector and found all kinds of interesting stuff like that,
Maybe I'll do some timed charging tests then.
It's probably not outputting enough power. You need 2amp charger like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-reVIV...NO4Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1309665830&sr=8-3
It is a 2 amp charger.
Edit: Its this charger, just sold without the cable.
http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-PowerJolt-Charger-iPhone/dp/B003GAAQXM/ref=pd_cp_e_1
It's not the amperage - it's the pin configuration. The Samsung chargers have a different pin configuration that tells the tab to start charging. Note that the pin swap happens in the charger unit, not in the data/charging cable so it's not enough to use a stock USB charger with the cable that came with your tab.
You can get adapters off of ebay that turn a regular USB charger into a "Samsung tab charger", you'd plug the adapter into the USB charger then the cable that came with the tab into the adapter and it should start charging.
This thread has more info on the adapters:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116496
Thanks for the info. It definitely wasn't charging. I had it plugged in for a half hour with no percentage increase. Just returned it.
I don't have the resistors to reproduce my findings but found that there is a residence of 8.28k ohms between ground and both d+ and d-. 8.43k ohms between 5v and both d+ and d-. 0.7 ohms between d+ and d-.
I expect that in these adapters that there are two resisters and a diode.
Can any one verify this?

The Tab fast charges if you short D+ and D-, otherwise it's limited to 500mA.
I tried connecting the pins together, connecting both to ground and both to positive and none of those configurations put it into charge mode. When I test what comes out of my charger, I get 1.248 between the data pins and ground.

You need to let the d+/d- pins float.
If you let them float, then you get the same red x. Before you said you needed to short them. What are you shorting them to?

Sorry, I thought I already tested my Tab with my adapter that seems to work for everything else. Turns out it gives me the red X too. I guess Samsung can't follow a standard (though not as bad as the Transformer's adapter/cable).
The 8.3k or so between both d+/d- and ground and d+/d- and +5V is misleading since we're seeing 1.2V at the data pins. This post implies that it's actually a 33K/10K divider from +5V to ground which makes the 1.2V make sense. I'll try this later tonight if I can find some spare USB connectors.
The 33k/10k spilt did the trick!

See my post here.
Scosche makes Galaxy Tab specific 2.1amp car chargers with 1 and with 2 USB slots. Go here: http://www.scosche.com/consumer-tech/search/ and type USB in the search box on the top of the page. On the resulting page of USB devices you will find the Galaxy specific models.
They make identical models of "generic" USB car chargers which you can find cheap on eBay and just use the SAMSUNG CHARGING ADAPTER to make it work but the Galaxy Specific models are a cleaner install.

Good find. I saw those on Amazon, but they seemed expensive, and I couldn't find any info at the time about whether it worked on the 10.1 or just the original Tab. I like the low profile one, but it is only single port. The dual-port looks too large for my setup.
I also got 4x China chargers for the price of one of those. =/
The Scosche iPad chargers such as the reVIVE II for iPad can be modified. Mine's in the car so I can't provide the exact resistor location or pictures, however:
If you open the reVIVE II and you look at the board with the plug portion to the left and the USB jacks to the right:
The upper USB jack is the 2.1A port. You need to perform the following mods to make it charge the tab:
Take D+ and D- and short them together. Solder blob will do this.
At this point instead of having 2.0v on one pin and 2.8v on the other (Resistors used for telling Apple iDevices to charge at 1A+), you will have 2.4v on both pins.
On the upper edge of the board there will be three resistors. The rightmost one is the current limiter for the power LED. (It should have a trace going to the LED)
The next one is part of the voltage dividers for one of the USB pins. Specifically, the voltage divider that originally generated 2.8v. Remove this resistor. I believe it has "62C" printed on it. Remove it - it'll be a pain in the ass. Tiny part, lead-free solder with ridiculously high melting temp.
At this point, if you reassemble the charger, you should see around 1.2-1.24 volts on D+ and D-. Congratulations, you now have a Galaxy Tab car charger.

Compatible 2A USB cable for Wireless charger

Hi,
I brought the nexus wireless charger so I could use it in my car as a car charger alongside my infiniapps holder. I have everything mounted ok but I cant seem to find a cable that will allow me to connect to the charger without the dreaded red light.
I brought the portapow one from amazon which was meant to allow high amperage, but after needing to hack it so the plug would go into the charger (silly design) it still didnt work - so now I have a £5 dud cable lying around.
The difficulty is that the original cable is not long enough - my belkin charger for the cigarette lighter is ok - and Id rather not have to wire in another cigarette lighter behind the dash - so any 2 meter confirmed working cables that can be shipped to the UK out there?
Thanks!
Two meters? That's a heck of a length of cable - are you sure you really need that much?
I've had good luck with the Monoprice USB cables. The "28/24 AWG" ones supposedly have the thicker (24 AWG) wires for the power than the usual cables on the market. I have several of the 6' (~2m) ones that I use at my desk when doing dev work. They aren't floppy like the cheap cables, so I don't generally use them in the car or other places where strain on the USB connector could be an issue.
Their International page suggest that they are available through Amazon UK.

[Q] Note 2 charging speeds..

Here's the deal. I bought this http://www.ebay.com/itm/12131733658...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648 last week and noticed it was taking forever to charge my phone using the provided wall and usb cables. I downloaded an app that told me how many amps my phone was charging at when plugged in and I got 500ma. I then plugged in an old garmin usb cable into my phone and it would charge at about 1500ma.
Now, the garmin wire is only a foot long so I cant use it in the car. I have a 3-in-1 car charging unit that is hard wired into the fusebox, for the gps, phone, etc.. when I plug the usb piece from ebay into the 3 piece with the usb cable provided it charges at about 300-400ma.. When it plug it directly into the car charging adapter in the car it charges about 500ma.
But when I plug the garmin cable into the 3-in-1 that charges at about 700 and directly into the car at about 11-1200...
So, my problem I believe is the cheap usb 'data' cable I bought from ebay.
Where can I buy a 6ft or so just straight usb cable that will charge at least at 1200ma for the Note 2??
I know this has been brought up 100 times but I havent really found a good answer yet.
I also tried cutting the green and white wires and even shorting the data pins with tin foil to no avail.
Please someone advise thanks!
