[Q] AT&T M9 convert to Dev/Unlocked RUU - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

From what I've read, the AT&T model is the same hardware as the developer & unlocked model.
Is it possible to install a T-Mobile RUU onto the AT&T model and get all the LTE bands?
If you install the developer/unlocked RUUs will you get all the LTE bands for AT&T or T-Mobile?

Do S-OFF.. Change CID and MID to the desired ones.. flash the appropriate RUU.. Check the performance.. Report back here with your knowledgeable update.. Thank you!

After s-off, you will be able to install other's RUU by matching the CID, MID.
However, LTE bands cannot be unlocked just by running RUU. You will need specific method to unlock other bands.
FYI, there're some thread discussing about LTE band unlock in xda, but it's highly dangerous ATM. I would not suggest you to do that if you are not quite understanding what you are going to do.

I've ran the RUU for .617 software. All is successful. I need to now change the MID. Any help I also have SuperCID.

Open the RUU of your desire, find android-info.txt file there inside, open it, read the MID indicated there..

How do I change the MID after I acquire that number? Doesn't the Developer Edition and the AT&T variant have the same MID? If anyone could verify this that'd be great. I am troubleshooting right now as to why it's not letting take an OTA OR flash firmware in fastboot RUU.

I figured out what it was. SuperCID will not allow you to proceed with an OTA because it says the system has been modified. It won't even let you choose the Install now or later. It just gives you a message and deleted it. I changed CID to BS_US001 and now the OTA is going ! Maybe SuperCID is no longer an option?

The AT&T version and Developer edition do have the same MID. I confirmed it before I flashed the DE ruu also it shows system modified as well in the bootloader. I had already changed my cid to the BS one before I ran the ruu. I was expecting it to say official. I'm guessing for it to say official it has to be a RUU that's released by HTC in the exe form?

I own the Developer Edition, left it stock about 5 days, Took the OTA and then Flashed TWRP 2.8.6.4 beta
Flashed SuperSU 2.48
tested a couple roms and kernels. I'm not sure when it went to modified.
Of course I'm s-off now, but i see in the picture above he is S-Off and Official ..not sure what causes this

I just installed the .11 OTA on an unlocked, rooted One x

I have what I believe is an International, European device. I bought it from someone who bought it in Italy. The serial begins with HT23, the software version has 401 in it, and the CID (according to CID getter) is HTC__203.
before I unlocked the bootloader through htcdev, I updated all the OTA, up to 1.29.401.7. But as you know, once I unlocked, installed CWM recovery and rooted the device, I was not able to install the new OTA (1.29.401.11). When I tried to install the zip manually, I got an error message saying, basically, that the CID is not right. It's my understanding that one you unlock the bootloader, the CID Changed to "None", although some commands WILL get you a valid CID.
For the last couple of days I lurked around the forums to see if anyone was able to come up with an idea, for installing the .11 OTA on a unlocked device.
Since I have no experience in editing the zip files I was scared ****less, but eventually I looked into the zip and found the file "updater-script" that appears to contain the condition regarding the CID.
So I remarked line 7-16 in the file, put it back into the zip, renamed it to update.zip and - presto!
The flash went on successfully!
This is my device before the installation:

}
and that's after:
Although the gui says that the baseband was updated, in the bootloader, the version is still the old one (1.1204.104.14).
The HBOOT too is still 0.94, not 0.95.
That's it
I've done the same thing two days ago BUT by device became dirt slow, started doing funny things and in the end I rolled it back. Using this method you cannot update the radio or hboot (that's the good part!).
You CAN flash the firmware.zip (for radio etc) via fastboot but you will need to flash the original recovery and then re-lock. Then, when you unlock again, it will reset the phone so you might as well use the RUU to begin with but if you don't want either then this method should work fine. I don't know how dependent the ROM is on the updated radio and I have had issues in the past where the two did not match.
I have since upgraded via the RUU.....and it's still doing funny things.
What kind of "funny" behavior do you get?
In the mean time, I thought that I'll do a nandroid backup, Install RUU so the radio and HBOOT will be installed, and restore the nandroid to have all my applications back.
That worked only halfways
I started the RUU with the phone in normal mode (not fastboot, no re-lock or stock recovery, no cache clear) and after a while the RUU failed. I rebooted the phone, and it still worked (phew...) and now in the bootloader, the radio is updated to 1.204.105.14 too. HBOOT is still 0.94 though.
I explain this steps in my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632662
Post here your zip
I can't upload a 14 mb file here, nor can I post external links yet.
so here is the link to dropbox, but not clickable.
dl.dropbox.com/u/52657948/onex/update.zip
bear in mind that I also remarked the part that checks the MID.
btw. In the mean time I went full RUU and reinstalled all the applications manually.
Isn't it easier to flash stock recovery, update via OTA then reflash CWM and reroot? It's safer and quicker IMO ;O
Insertcoin has the 1.29.11 inside, if your phone is rooted it's better to flash his rom then

It is possible, I updated from 1.26 to 1.28 this way The only thing OTA needs to be processed is actually stock recovery. But during update it does remove root, so you need to reroot (and to do that you need to reflash CWM of course )
But did the radio and HBOOT got updated? what does it say in the bootloader?
Of course it does update hboot and radio - it's a regular OTA.
Edit: just checked it in bootloader - hboot is 0.95 and radio is 105.14, so it's up-to-date

You also could of removed the .img files from the ruu and fastboot flash them.
Hi, @ op.
Sorry to hijack this thread but didn't want to start a new one and you might know the answer?
I have an unbranded UK HOX running EnergyRom.
If I reflash my nandroid backup, flash stock recovery and relock bootloader I can then flash the latest 1.29.401.11 RUU.
If I then re-unlock, re-flash CWM, and finally my Energyrom backup will I undo all the changes made by the update except for the new Hboot and radio?
Should I wait for the update the EnergyRom and not bother with the RUU?
Just that I am eager to try the flicker fix.
TIA

It would freeze for periods of time, and become unresponsive. I reset the whole thing again and this time did NOT restore go launcher with titanium backup and it is MUCH better now.
The RUU needs a locked phone with the original recovery.
A nandroid backs up the entire system and apps iirc. I usually just use the backup from recovery these days.

First you need to be ABLE to get the OTA over the air. Not that easy and HTC don't seem to offer an easy method to download and flash the OTA...... Pretty poor if you ask me.
The phone also needs to be locked. I'm sure I read that it failed for some guys while it was unlocked and i think I tried this myself and found that I had to relock. When you then unlock again the phone is factory reset anyway.

I didn't relock my bootloader (unlocked on 1.26) so how can you explain I got both 1.28 and 1.29 via OTA with no problems? A miracle? Just flashed stock recovery and then used OTA via WiFi.

That's good to know. Of course having a UK handset is would need to wait for the official OTA for weeks ;-), I'm still pretty sure the fastboot method needed the relock.

This thread is a placeholder for all possible firmwares we can get from official HTC OTA's.
Your CID number must be exactly the same. If it's written "HTC__001" it means you can't flash it, if your CID is "02__001". The whole text must match!
Please READ this small F.A.Q. before continuing!
What is firmware.zip?
Firmware.zip is a part of each OTA update from HTC. It contains important part of the firmware like radio, bootloader, recovery, kernel etc..
Why it's important to flash firmware.zip and when should I flash it?
It is recommended to have flashed latest firmware on your device for best modem performance and system stability. Sometimes it's necessary to have latest bootloader flashed because otherwise your device might not work well with new system update.
Does firmware.zip contains radio?
Yes, it does contain radio, and for S-ON devices the only method to update radio is to flash latest firmware.zip
Why it's important to flash it before flashing custom ROM?
Because firmware.zip contains boot.img (ramdisk and kernel) that will replace custom boot.img from any custom ROM you have. That's why you have to flash firmware.zip first, because otherwise boot.img will be overwritten with stock one.
If you already flashed firmware.zip after flashing custom ROM, just flash this particular custom ROM again.
Does firmware.zip contains recovery?
Yes, it does contain recovery image, that's why after flashing firmware.zip you will have to flash custom recovery again, to be able to flash custom ROM afterwards.
Can I flash this firmware.zip on any HTC One?
Not if your device is S-ON. To be able to flash it on S-ON device, your modelid (example: PN0710000) and cidnum (example: HTC__001) must match the firmware.zip version you are about to flash.
If my modelid or cidnum doesn't match, can I brick my device if I try to flash firmware.zip anyway?
As long as your device is S-ON flashing firmware.zip with non matching modelid or cidnum will result in error and nothing will be flashed, so there is no risk of brick.
Do I need to have locked, unlocked or relocked bootloader to be able to flash firmware.zip?
Your bootloader needs to be relocked.
If I can't flash newest firmware.zip because of wrong modeid (MID) or cidnum (CID) does it mean I can't use custom ROM based on the latest HTC update?
In most cases you should be able to run any custom ROM as long as hboot update is not mandatory.
What if there is no firmware.zip for my MID/CID?
Try to find latest OTA update for your original stock ROM and send it to me. I will post firmware.zip here.
How to flash?
(bootloader needs to be relocked)
Re-lock your bootloader (this will most probably wipe content of your device)
Copy downloaded .zip to fastboot.exe location (e.g. c:/SDK/platform-tools/fastboot.exe)
Re-name .zip file to firmware.zip
Open command prompt
Boot your device in fastboot mode (vol down + power ===> fastboot)
Connect device to the PC
In command prompt cd to fastboot.exe location
Make sure you have correct modeid and cidnum (type: fastboot getvar all)
Type: fastboot oem lock (if your device is not relocked yet)
Type: fastboot oem rebootRUU and wait for device to reboot
Type: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and wait for process to complete
Sometimes flashing for the first time doesn't work, so flash firmware.zip again just to make sure.
Type: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and wait for process to complete
Type: fastboot reboot
Unlock your bootloader and flash custom recovery if you are going to use custom ROM.

I'm facing a very similar issue. I have a Verizon HTC One, Bootloader is LOCKED, and S-On. Tried using the correct ruu, but from what I've read, I can't flash that decrypted ruu without s-off. Do I have a pretty paperweight now? I've tried everything I can think of.
A side note, I do not have a custom recovery or OS installed, no adb, but I can use fastboot. Thank you!

Two things about ruu.
You can only use encrypted version if s-on.
You cannot downgrade if s-on.
I suggest anyone wishing to go back to stock switch their s flag to on as the very last step.
I have a copy of the encrypted .10 ruu if you are currently on that firmware.
What does your boot loader screen say?

Yeah I actually found an encrypted or signed .10 online and flashed it using fastboot. I had a Locked bootloader and S-on, so this really came at a good time. There was no OS on the phone and I only had access to fastboot. Thankfully I fixed it with this RUU.
If anyone needs the 2.10.605.1 ruu, here's exactly where I got it from (just fix the URL, I'm obviously a new user and can't post links):
flyhalf205. [com]/RUU/.direct_link_only/RUU_M7_WL_JB43_SENSE50_VZW_MR_VERIZON_WWE_2.10.605.1_Radio_1.12.41.1112_2_NV_VZW_3.71_002_release_341019_signed_2.zip
Downloaded that and flashed it via Terminal on OS X. Worked PERFECT. I'm so glad these forums are here as they helped me find this solution. Thanks!

flyhalf205. [com]/RUU/.direct_link_only/RUU_M7_WL_JB43_SENSE50_VZW_MR_VERIZON_WWE_2.10.605.1_Radio_1.12.41.1112_2_NV_VZW_3.71_002_release_341019_signed_2.zip
Downloaded that and flashed it via Terminal on OS X. Worked PERFECT. I'm so glad these forums are here as they helped me find this solution. Thanks!

@vsemoney
You need an encrypted ruu that is newer than what you have. Unfortunately, the newest is the only one I have. You cannot flash it via fastboot anymore either as attempting to will give you the same signature error. You must use the exe I have posted here. I repeat, you cannot flash this zip using any other method.

near as I can tell your one is from Cinncinati Bell and you'll probably never see an update. It's similar to a T-mobile One if memory serves me right. Anyway you'll need S-OFF to convert your phone to DE or international if you want to receive updates

you can flash roms without s-off, but some roms are going to need firmware that's up to date. Your phone will not get that up to date firmware unless you get s-off and do the developer edition conversion ( change CID and MID and flash DE RUU)
As Far as your phone being international it really should not matter as long as it's working on the carrier you use, it is a LTE compatable M8_UL

You need to s-off and update firmware to run that ROM, otherwise you will have some serious issues including long (like 5-10 minute) boot times and broken WiFi.
Same is going to happen if you try to run any 4.4.3 Sense based custom ROMs coming from 4.4.2.
Just search and read if want more info on firmware. This has been discussed probably dozens of times on other threads.

Do you still want to convert the phone to Developer Edition ?
If you want to just use the international firmware their here > http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/index.php?dir=HTC/HTC_One_M8/401/
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
fastboot reboot
If your looking to convert, you change your CID to BS_US002
and MID to 06PB12000 >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708581
and then use the RUU here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/ruu-developer-edition-3-28-1540-5-t2918749
fastboot oem writecid BS_US002

Just look in the Development forum section for the threads regarding firmware. You can flash after the fact (after ROM is already installed). But I normally recommend to backup any important data before flashing just about anything "just in case".

Relocking bootloader is not required or suggested.
I'm not sure which firmware goes with your CID. You'll need to research yourself, unless somebody who knows chimes in.
As long as you have a GSM M8, the firmware should be fine. But you may or may not experience some minor network issues, if the firmware is not intended for your carrier.

[Q] Help Flashing Stock ROM onto Developer M8

Hey guys,
So I have a Developer Edition M8 (HBOOT- 3.19), and I went through multiple steps trying to get GPE onto it. Since I'm posting here, I screwed up along the way, and Google hasn't been to helpful. To put it simply, I do not have an OS on the phone right now, and need to flash stock back onto it, and am having trouble because TWRP recovery no longer wishes to run.
Here's what happened:
I was following an outdated guide to getting GPE (I didn't know it was outdated at the time) and it said to flash insertcoin in order to be able to use firewater to get S-Off. I flashed insertcoin, realized firewater was no longer supporeted, and felt like I had wasted a few hours. I then found sunshine and tried to use it, but insertcoin was not close enough to stock to be compatible, so I tried to flash a stock ROM I found on this thread here onto the phone. I am fairly certain I downloaded the correct file, as the HBOOT 3.19 leads to the 3.xx file, and my CIS is BS_US002, so I downloaded the 3.28 file available. I took the zip, placed it onto the phone, and wiped insertcoin, and tried to install the stock ROM. Well, it failed.
I went back to the drawing board, actually read the instructions, and did this: I placed the unpacked zip into the TWRP/Backups folder on the phone. I then used fastboot flash recovery FILE.IMG to flash boot.emmc.win from my computer to the phone. Now, when I try to go into recovery to wipe and recover, it no longer enters TWRP. It is stuck on the HTC screen.
What do I do from here? My main goal is just to get stock back onto the phone, and I hope I did not mess up the phone.
To put all phone info in one place:
HTC One M8 Developer Edition
HBOOT- 3.19
CID- BS_US002
Thank you!

I downloaded the RUU and tried running it: it gave me error code 155 and said that it cannot update the phone. Right below it also states to get the correct RUU and try again, although I think this is the right one.
Is there any way to troubleshoot this/fix this?

I figured out the problem but still no solution: both of these require s-off. The bootloader is unlocked, but I currently have S-On. What can we do to either make it S-Off or put the stock ROM on the phone?

bootloader needs to be relocked when you are s-on, for ruu mode flashing (firmware.zip or full ruu)

Yep, I know it's silly that the US Dev edition (bootloader unlocked by default), has to be relocked for RUU mode flash with S-ON... same thing on the M7

Progress made.
I locked bootloader, ran the RUU, got stock back onto there. Then unlocked again, rerooted, and got s-off. Now I'm trying to install the GE RUU as said by this site and its giving me something that says "FAILED <remote: 42 custom id check fail>" .
Just this one last step, what can I do to go around this and fix this?
Thank you both for your help so far!
