all,
I have been reading several threads, wiki's, forums etc etc. Some seem somewhat helpful, others are showing details I don't see using my phone.
What is the thing I'd like to accomplish here:
I have a std HTC desire Z 1.82.405.1. It's not rooted, It doesn't have eng-boot etc. Neither I'd want to downgrade it, to get S-off at this moment. The only thing I want to do is to be able to load the gingerbread leaked version pc10img.zip.
I have been searching high and low as said -- haven't found a single article that exactly explains what to do.
I have linux, adb and fastboot available. I also have psneuter and the like. I even have the required downgrade f/w available. I only want to go that route if I see enough reason (for me) to be able to become root. (And emp root works fine btw thru psneuter/adb shell)
Now, when I try to load the leaked version:
1) I installed the pc10img.zip file /sdcard
2) started the phone in the boot menu, the zip fie gets loaded
3) the zipfile gets verified
and then, all stops. E.g. I haven't found at this point a piece of documentation what to do to flash this image in the phone. Recovery talks about update.zip and obviously the filename is different.
So what's next. What should I do to have this actually flashed?
And again, I have been reading several threads of over 30 pages, more wiki pages than fingers, been googling etc etc. You sometimes get quite far and then read after 16 pages that a special rom is needed, or eng-boot or.. etc.
Somewhat frustrating. :-(
Anyone who can tell how to proceed after step 3...?
Roeland
Hmm it's silent ..
all,
I have asked a few people off list and some of them were helpfl. Others were hinting that if someone asks a question, he or she must be stupid or something.
Anyways. I have been tedousy reading several threads that most of the time end up in being not the original thread anymore.. SOmeone said that my CID may be not the one in the android-info.txt file etc etc.
modelid: PC1011000
cidnum: HTC__001
cidnum: HTC__E11
cidnum: HTC__N34
cidnum: HTC__203
cidnum: HTC__102
cidnum: HTC__405
cidnum: HTC__Y13
cidnum: HTC__A07
cidnum: HTC__304
cidnum: HTC__032
mainver: 2.30.405.1
hbootpreupdate:12
is what it states.
if I exec from linux (output slightly edited):
[email protected]:~/temproot> adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
property service neutered.
killing adbd. (should restart in a second or two)
[email protected]:~/temproot> adb shell /data/local/tmp/gfree_verify
gfree verify_cid returned:
@CID: HTC__E11
@secu_flag: 1
@SIMLOCK= 00
so the model is one of the android-info.txt file. Still it only loads the zip file,
verifies and that's it.
So I'm basically stuck.
I can downgrade the system to 1.34.70.73 make it a permanent root and s-off but then the question is -- how can I upgrade back to the current or future version? I know that there is a website that contains several roms and I even have found out partly what rom is for what audience.
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android
But then. if 1.34.x is installed does HTC notice this and direct push OTA the version I have now?
Really I tried my best in searching for answers bit it's adaunting task, especialliy if many times people drift away in a thread. So halfway reading may be interesting but then you might not have noticed that you needed clockworks recovery or (insert anything here).
The wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
gives the most information here including linkts to other hepful resoures. STill the OTA question -- where..?
and why not going root anyways
well, there are several con's and pro's for being root on the device.
yes, I'd like to have busybox and su installed. But do I want s-off? I'd say -- handy. On the other hand, it makes the system more vulnerable.
I see several applications tht require root access. So yes may be worthwhile. but no I don't want to install an overclocked kerne, or specific thins or rmk* stuff etc.
I am happy withthe stock but sometimes may beed elevated privilegs.
I understand that the leaked version here of gingerbread contains su and may be hand to test a few things.
Other trouble why I hesitate is, that several sites report that for instance contacts are synced against google and yet, I have 400+ entries with half of it including additional details, links, mail addresses and on. If there are 20 on google.... I followed the guidelines to sync all but it appears to do a very small subset.
So I could use phone-nanny to have a backup and backupeverything (titatium only works of you have root..) but then how sure can I be that all is in place after I flashed, rooted and the like?
Most of the 'backup your stuff' messages think that you *are* already having root, which obviusly isn't the case.
If I would not have this phone filled with loads of information I just could flash and go for it. However, at this moment it may cause a lot of pain if I cannot recover. So I hope that the two recovery ways are enough.....
I am turning my old phone into pretty much a mobile gaming/media device for my son. In my rushed laziness I misconstrued unlocking/s-off and rooting as the same thing. To make a long story short, I have TWRP 2.7.0.2 installed (I now know this is a very old version, I didn't realize the post I was following was from 4 years ago. -_-), I am unlocked, and s-off. I however do not know if I am rooted (I am guessing not since TWRP fails to install OS ROM's). I do not have a backup of the original OS (which I don't want anyway) and need some assistance with rooting or verifying I am rooted from within TWRP or adb. I figured since my phone is still booting up to TWRP and I have successfully sideboarded SuperSu and installed it from within TWRP I am not completely out of luck.
Thank you ahead of time for any assistance. It's greatly appreciated.
I am open to recommendations for ROMs. I was going to do CM13 w/gapps but if there is a sleeker, more efficient ROM (I've heard good things about Viper) feel free to advise. He'll just be taking pictures, playing Clash and Pokémon Go etc.
This is also a Verizon phone not sure if that matters anymore since I nuked it and unlocked it.
I figured I would be asked to do this so here is the info getvar info all

you need the most staple rom ?
I believe it will be the stock as you said for some gaming and taking pictures
also there is viper and s-rom ( both are ported from HTC 10 ) and pretty stable to be daily drive
and many more roms which support Verizon devices

I don't mind if it isn't staple. I need it to be stable, bloat free, high performance, and basic features need to work like Gapps, camera, blue tooth, and gps. Thank you for taking time to respond.

You don't need root to install ROMs on this phone. You do need root (at least temp root) in order to s-off; but since you have successfully obtained s-off, its irrelevant now whether you are rooted or not.
The main reason ROMs won't install is probably due to the outdated TWRP version. Install the current TWRP 3.0.2.
Also make sure that the ROM(s) specifically supports the Verizon M8. If not, the ROM won't boot, due to kernel differences between the VZN version, and most other M8 versions.

Thanks that about did it. I upgraded TWRP to current, wiped Davlick/Cache/System/Data etc, installed CM13, cleared Davlick/Cache again, rebooted and I was good to go. I updated to CM14 + gapps 7.1. Everything is working great. I backed up probably 4x as I went along so I don't lose the OS like I did last time.
I do have a few other questions that you may or may not be able to answer.
Where does TWRP save the back ups on the phone? I was unable to locate them via File Manager (even with Root Access on.)
I installed Pokémon Go and it fails to authenticate every time regardless if I use his gmail or PTC account. It seems like the game detects Root access but I have Root turned off at the moment. Do you have any suggestions? That would probably be his favorite game to play.

It depends on your choice ( internal or external )
Once you made a backup and choosed the location ( external or internal ) you will find a new folder called TWRP in your storage open it you will find another folder called BACKUPS open it you will see another folder called ( your device serial number ) open it you will see your backup folder called by date and time ( if you didn't change it )
it should be like this
TWRP--»BACKUPS--»YOURSERIALNUMBER--»BACKUPNAME
Hope that helps

As ahmed stated, this depends on what you have selected in TWRP (internal storage vs. SD card). There is a button in TWRP to toggle between internal storage and SD. Either way, it will generate a folder named "TWRP" which will contain your backups.

Pokémon Go definitely checks for root. I'm not personally aware whether having root "deactivated" (or whatever the right term would be) on the CM settings is enough. But since you can't login to the game, I'd say its detecting root.
There is an Xposed module to hide root. But I'm not sure if that is enough, either.

As far as I'm aware of - not playing it myself - PoGO checks for root as well as safetynet (as used by banking apps). Root triggers it in any case, but also an unlocked bootloader, because an unlocked bootloader triggers safetynet. There are possibilities to hide both, root as well as unlocked bl, from PoGO to get it up and running. But I'm not familiar with the needed steps as I don't use this game and thus don't need to know about those steps.

Alrighty thanks again. Honestly, the game is quite awful and this gives me a reason to not have him play it. 😂

My suggesting into bypassing the pokemon go is to install a nonrooted rom, install and login to pokemon go, root it using supersu systemless root, use titanium backup to backup pokemon go and its user data, go back to cm 14 enable root from developers option, install titanium backup again and restore pokemon go. Ive heard it works and it totally works on snapchat as snapchat won't let you login if your rooted.
Hello guys, well done for the fantastic job you're doing here. Please help me with a friend's HTM One M8 with me.
He was actually trying to upgrade it, but eventually got it bricked and I've also downloaded different RUU files to bring it back to life, but all proved abortive. Probably I wasn't doing the right thing. And I'm glad I'm here for you guys to help me out.

Post the results of fastboot getvar all. Remove the serial#, IMEI, and MEID first before you post it.
You have a Sprint model, and I'm assuming the Harmon/Kardon version from the DSP, but the getvar will tell us more definitively.
EDIT: You are S-Off and superCID, so either the regular Sprint or the H/K Sprint RUU will work.
You can download both of them from here.
First of all, do NOT try flashing any RUUs or firmware, unless we tell you exactly what to do.
Reason being, the device is the Sprint M8, which is fairly peculiar. It's designed to support the US Sprint CDMA network (in addition to GSM, HSPA and LTE) and therefore must only use Sprint RUU, firmware and radios.
Trying to flash any other carrier version RUU, firmware, or radio will result in a radio brick. And the damage may be permanent.

Bricked meaning what? It won't boot to OS? Does it get stuck on HTC logo screen, or only goes to the bootloader screen?
A true brick means the screen doesn't come on at all, and requires the phone to be opened, in order to fix it (JTAG or new motherboard). This isn't you situation.
Another kind of brick is a "radio brick" mentioned above. The phone will boot to OS, but you will have no cell connectivity ("no network").
What exactly did your friend try to do? Tried to flash a custom ROM? Unlocked the bootloader, and installed custom recovery? Or something else?
It's really important to know exactly what your friend tried to do.

No idea to know if you were doing the right thing or not. You provide zero specifics. What RUUs (list exact file names, version numbers) did you try? What specific error messages did you get (or other failure modes)?

I agree, this is probably the right solution. But to the OP, I'd still like to confirm as much of the mentioned details as possible, to make sure we aren't looking at a radio brick situation caused by flashing wrong M8 version RUU, firmware.

Starting with the first. Yeah it won't boot to Os. That's all I could observe, apart from the failed flashings using about 3 different RUUs downloaded from HTC website

I just opened the link you gave , and I discovered that it's the same HTC website where I've been to download the RUU files with me. Since you mentioned that it's Sprint, I discovered that I've already downloaded and tried the RUU for regular Sprint there. But since you also said either of it or the H/K could work too, I'm already downloading that now, since the regular Sprint didn't work for it.

If the "regular" (non-HK) RU didn't work, I tend to doubt the HK RUU will. But it's hard to say, for the lack of info.
I asked before for details about how the RUU failed, but you never answered. Was there an error message (if so, what exactly was it)? Or did it get "stuck" or crash at a certain point (if so, describe at what point, and what happened, in as much detail as possible).
You might be wasting your time and ours, by not properly providing the questions asked of you. In particular, I suspect a USB connectivity or other issue, that a different RUU will not solve.

If you don't know, you should ask your friend what he did. It sounds like you are doing a favor trying to fix the phone for him. So it's in their own interest to provide you the info. It may give us some clues on what caused the present "no boot" conditions, and if there are deeper issues (radio brick).

Connect the phone to PC. In bootloader, it should default to say FASTBOOT (highlighted in red) near the top of the phone's screen. Otherwise, use vol keys and power button to select fastboot, and confirm the choice.
Then, you need to find fastboot.exe. If you tried to run an RUU, you should already have the necessary HTC drivers and fastboot.exe setup.
In the folder containing fastboot.exe, open command prompt. Then type command: fastboot getvar all
Then copy and past the output, but delete IMEI, serial number and MEID before posting (personal info).
I can go into more details about the steps above. But I'm not clear on your level of experience with this type of thing. Presumably, you have some experience with working on these phone (and it appears you've been on XDA for some years). Otherwise, why would your friend give it to you to fix?

Here's how thole whole thing went: I put the phone on FASTBOOT mode, (with the phone showing FASTBOOT USB) and connected it to the Pc, then launched the .exe for the newly downloaded Harman Kardon RUU. At the end, it's the error 155 I got as shown in the screen shots below:

I've tried to this severally, but it's not responding as the phone seems not to be fully recognized, especially from the command prompt. I've installed the HTC drivers and even tried it on both Windows 7 and 10, but the situation is still the same.
Please help me out!!!

Please stop quoting my whole post. Just include what is relevant, and delete the rest. Otherwise you are just cluttering up the thread, and making it harder to read.
Also, please don't post the same questions over and over. Once is enough. You posted while I was typing a response, is the only reason I didn't see the last time you posted the same question.
If the RUU is able to talk to the phone, but your fastboot command (getvar all) is not, than you are doing something wrong.
I don't know what you mean when you say "it's not responding as the phone seems not to be fully recognized" as that is too vague to know exactly what you are talking about. What exactly is the response in the command prompt window? Is there an error? Does it say "Waiting for device"? Any response when you issue the command: fastboot devices
(It should respond with the phone's serial number).

Thanks, your suggestions and advices regading the forum are noted and will be taken into action from now on.
Whenever I click on the fastboot.exe, something like a command prompt will just pop out and go immediately, meaning that it doesn't stay. But if I open a command prompt from the pc and type it in there, it'll say it is not recognized as an internal or external command.
Please, I'm so eager to learn and also to see a lasting solution to the problem. Just tell me what to do and would follow it accordingly. Thanks

You're doing it wrong. You don't click on fastboot.exe, and when you open the command prompt, it needs to be pointed to the directory folder that contains fastboot.exe
Easiest way to do that: With the folder open (that contains fastboot.exe) hover your mouse cursor over that folder. Press Shift + right mouse button. This will bring up pulldown menu. Select "Open command window here" from the menu. Then type: fastboot getvar all
To cut/paste the output in cmd window, right mouse click, pick "Mark" and highlight the getvar output. Then in a forum post, click CTRL+V to paste the text. Delete IMEI, serial number, and MEID before posting.

Sorry, I'm still not getting it, especially the Shift +Right mouse combination, So, I copied copied the fastboot.exe directory to the cmd, and still got the 'not recognised as an internal or external command' error.
Please, see the attached screen shot for reference. Thanks.
Edit:
Probably because I'm using Windows 10, after holding the shift button + Right click, what I could see there is 'Open PowerShell Window here', so I wouldn't know if this is the option you're referring to. Pls do let me know. Thanks.

Okay. Try this.
Open your fastboot folder
Boot your phone to bootloader (power off the phone, then boot it up by holding both the power button and volume down)
Hook up the phone to the PC
Press and hold the windows button on your keyboard, then press "X"
Choose command prompt
enter fastboot getvar all in the command window
Copy and paste the results minus your serial#, IMEI, and MEID
Also, I'm going to make a RUU.zip that you can flash via your SD card without having to rename it (I'll rename it myself) I just have to download the Sprint RUU.exe to extract it from first, but before I upload it I'd like to see your getvar results.

Still 'Command Prompt' is not listed in the options after pressing the X button, while holding the Windows key. The only similar thing there is 'Windows PowerShell' and 'Windows PowerShell (Admin)'

Okay
Use windows power shell
enter cmd
Then enter fastboot getvar all
EDIT: first you'll have to click on a blank spot in your fastboot folder (so no files are highlighted) before opening the command prompt/power shell
I forgot to mention that
EDIT#2: I thought opening cmd that way (with the windows button) would work, but I just tried it myself and it doesn't unless you direct it to the folder with commands
By shift ~ right click, what is meant is click on a blank spot in the fastboot folder then hold the shift button (the one you press to make capital/uppercase letters) then right click on your mouse then choose command prompt or power shell
