You need to flash the zv8 radio. Go here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451426
Wipe everything, but internal. Flash ROM, zv8 radio, gapps. Reboot.
That should fix you. All kernels now have auto detection for display.

I have installed the latest nightly of cyanogenmod 11 now. Before i have the stock AT&T 4.4.2 rom.
To install the custom rom i have to flash the stock AT&T 4.1.2 rom, after that root that one, install freegee, install CWMR. And after that install the cyanogenmod rom from the recovery mode.}
To make the 4.1.2 rollback i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302660
The method above is exactly what you need to do for a good deep sleep on custom kk ROM... If you don't like the custom kk ROM and want to try another one ...do process all over again with new ROM. Good luck

Here is the easiest thing. Update TWRP, backup. Download zv8 radio, ROM for ls980, gapps(some prefer pa gapps minimal).
Wipe, flash ROM, flash radio, flash gapps.
Reboot and wait.
Reason for new TWRP. Backs up radio. You can go back to your previous without concern for radio.
Is this confirmed working? I've been having the same issue, but I flash the radio, then rom and gapps, and TWRP loses my backups, have to flash the .tot again.
Ok, I tried this out and it works perfectly Follow the exact method in the second post. If you installed TWRP with AutoRec you will be on JB bootloader, make sure you use the ZV8 radio, which is the JB radio. For GSM unlock just dial *#*#4636#*#* and select GSM Only. Good day all.

what's the easiest way to go about updating TWRP? it's been a while since I've been truly active in phone customization.

Just download the latest TWRP zip and flash it while in your current version of TWRP, then reboot.

Hello everyone I am a new to android and flashing roms on kit kat and lollipop. Right now I have a stock LG G3 D851 (T-mobile) running android 4.4.2 kit kat. I plan on rooting this phone but I need to clear something up first. If I root my 4.4.2 phone and install twrp, could I flash CM 12.1 or Cloudy G3 2.3 or would I have to update to official lollipop 5.x.x, root, install twrp, then flash those roms?

You do not have to update before installing new roms. After your rooted, intalled Twrp and so on, you are good to go.
Make sure you read all about rooting and flashing rooms before doing so. The guides here are very helpful. Even if you have done it before each phone has its own process.
I looking for a tutorial on how to root a Samsung Galaxy S3 and on how to install CM 12.1.
Root is not required to install a custom ROM. All you need to install CM12.1 is TWRP, the CM12.1 ROM, and gapps.

To flash a custom ROM, use Odin to flash TWRP from here: https://dl.twrp.me/d2tmo/
Once TWRP has been installed, you can boot into TWRP to flash a custom ROM and Gapps.
If you just want root, flash supersi from TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
